Who Can Receive Holy Communion? *Important-Please read* The Catholic Church sets out specific guidelines regarding how we should prepare ourselves to receive the Lord’s body and blood in Communion. First, you must be in a state of grace. “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread of drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord, let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup” (1 Cr. 11:27-28). This is an absolute requirement that can never be dispensed. To receive the Eucharist without sanctifying grace in your soul profanes the Eucharist in the most grievous manner. A mortal sin is any sin whose matter is grave and which has been committed willfully and with knowledge of its seriousness. Grave matter includes, but is not limited to, murder, receiving or participation in an abortion, homosexual acts, having sexual intercourse outside of marriage or in an invalid marriage, and deliberately engaging in impure thoughts (Matt. 5:28-29). Scripture contains lists of mortal sins (for example, 1 Cor. 6:9-10 and Gal. 5:19-21). For further information on what constitutes a mortal sin, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Second, you must have been to confession since your last mortal sin. The Didache witnesses to this practice of the early Church. “But first make confession of your faults, so that your sacrifice may be a pure one” ( Didache 14).
How to Qualify for Communion Become Catholic if you are not already. You must be of the Catholic faith to take Communion. Baptized children will be prepared to receive Sacraments in their regular classes, but if you are an adult you will participate in a process called RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults), learning what the Catholic Church teaches, and preparing you for Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. If you were Baptized in another Christian denomination you will make what is called a “Profession of Faith,” to convert to Catholicism. Accept Communion in a state of grace. The Eucharist may not be received while a person has mortal sin in their soul. If you have committed a mortal sin, you must go to Reconciliation and repent before receiving Communion. Believe in the doctrine of transubstantiation. You must believe in transubstantia-tion, which means that the bread and wine are actually transformed into the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ. The offerings only appear as bread and wine, but are believed to actually be parts of Christ himself. Participate in the Eucharistic fast. This means you cannot eat or drink anything for at least one hour before taking Communion (including chewing gum). Water and medicine are excluded from the fast. Those who are elderly or ill can be excused from fasting, with the priest’s permission. If you are married by the Justice of the Peace you cannot receive until your marriage is Blessed.
If not receiving, express in your heart a prayerful desire to be with Jesus.

Dear Friends,
With Lent being just two weeks away, now is a great time to start thinking about ways to enter into this liturgical season to make it more fruitful for you and your family.
I’d like to remind you all about the FORMED website our parish cluster subscribes to. I know many of you use this resource, but some folks are still unaware of the benefits of this powerful evangelization tool!
FORMED is an online service that provides access to thousands of Catholic videos, audios, and ebooks. By signing up for a FORMED account, you have access to Catholic saint movies, teen programming, documentaries, and bible studies. FORMED has been referred to as a Catholic “Netflix.”
I’m passionate about getting the faith into homes, and a FORMED subscription helps us to achieve this!
Below is a testimony from one of our youth about how FORMED has helped her grow in her faith.
“I love the FORMED website. I’ve listened to all of the teen talks and I like the audio dramas. There is a variety of content to choose from and I’ve grown in my faith because of the website.
I really liked the FORMED movie about St. Bakhita. The movie was well done and it opened my eyes to more of her story. I admired St. Bakhita's courage and hope that things would always get better. I also admired her willpower to keep going and the smile that she always had even amid hardships.
St. Bakhita made me realize how much of a difference a smile can make. I want to be happier around the house and offer a smile to my family even when it is difficult. I highly recommend the movie. - Therese Mead age 15, a parishioner at Immaculate Conception.
