Each group (a maximum of 35 participants) will spend twelve weeks working with a Globe Education Practitioner on an edit of Macbeth and then bring one of the five Acts to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse as their contribution to an ensemble performance. Throughout the course of the project, participants will be invited to see a storytelling, a full professional production of the play and a further performance at Shakespeare’s Globe. We also ask that groups perform at some point during the process for their school or community. This performance should reflect the community and the learners it is up to the group to decide whether a full edit of Macbeth would be most appropriate, or a small-scale sharing of several key scenes. The aim is to provide participants with the opportunity to work in a different performance space, and show an understanding of the whole story of Macbeth.

OUR THEATRE 2020: MACBETH

Thanks to the help and support of The Harris Foundation for Lifelong Learning we are delighted to announce that Our Theatre will once again be taking place in 2020! The project is free to participating groups and is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for members of the Southwark community. Our Theatre offers those who might not have worked with Shakespeare’s text in performance an incredible experience to work alongside industry professionals and perform in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. `

Summary We will be working with five Southwark-based groups: two mainstream secondary schools (year 7s), one SEN school, The Globe’s Southwark Youth Theatre and an adult theatre company. This performance should reflect the community and the learners – it is up to the group to decide whether a full edit of Macbeth would be most appropriate, or a small-scale sharing of several key scenes. The aim is to provide participants with the opportunity to work in a different performance space, and show an understanding of the whole story of Macbeth.

It is also an opportunity to celebrate with members of your wider community and engage them with the wonderful world of Shakespeare in performance! Our aim is to work alongside the group leader to enhance their skills in rehearsing and directing; both through Continuing Professional Development and team teaching with one of our Education Practitioners. Alongside the scheduled 90 minute weekly rehearsals with a Globe Education Practitioner, we will ask that halfway through the project, each participating group must commit an additional weekly rehearsal that will be delivered by the group leader. For school groups: We advise that all students should be from the same year group (year 7), although not necessarily from the same class. These sessions can take place in class time or as an extra-curricular activity, but it is vital that participants attend all of the rehearsals. Should you choose to run it as an extra-curricular session, please also consider how your behaviour management policy, in particular detentions, will work in line with rehearsals so as to ensure participants do not miss any sessions, especially in the run up to the final performance on 9th July. We would suggest that the group leader is a Drama Teacher who is at least NQT +1 on 01 September 2019.

“Working with The Globe has given my students an amazing opportunity to explore acting as

part of a professional ensemble, offering them a glimpse of a possible future career, and

enhancing their social and performance skills. The project provides us with invaluable life

lessons, and reminds us of the unique and special contribution Autistic people can make to

our world”
