St. James residents Arthur andHelene Krantz started We Care ForKids, a nonprofit charity that putson a fabulous Christmas party forunder-served children of Long Is-land. In past years they haveserved over 4,000 children eachyear. Over 1,000 children from the
Head Start program attended thisyear’s party at the Oheka Castle. All were treated to a terrific lunch, complete with cookies, ice creamand cotton candy and great enter-tainment. They got to mingle and
dance with all the life-size cartooncharacters you can imagine – pro-vided by St. James’ Parties byZiggy. Of course, what would aChristmas party be without Santa. Each child received a huge bag oftoys from Santa to take home... sobig that they literally had to dragthem out... really, really big!
Arthur and Helene Krantz arevery generous and opened theirhome this past year to the Cottages to Castles House andGarden Tour.

Neighbors Caring for Neighbors
by Pat Westlake, Executive CoordinatorSmithtown township Emergency Food Pantry
November 1, 2009 saw the Smithtown Emer-gency Food Pantry with shelves only one third full.our basement storage room was empty – not evenone box or can. Every week we received donationsbut they could not keep up with the demand. Bythen we had experienced a 75% increase in thenumber of families requesting assistance.
the message that we needed help went out intothe community and once again you rallied to pro-vide for neighbors in need. Food Drives were held, people stood in front of stores and handed out fly-ers, funds were collected. Assistance came from allareas of our town, individuals who kept calling andasking what we needed, children who walked fromhouse to house collecting from their neighbors, businesses and their employees, business organiza-tions, fraternal and social organizations, the schooldistrict offices and the schools and clubs. BoyScouts, Girl Scouts, sports clubs, town employees, hospital employees and many local churches allwere very supportive.
our shelves are now well stocked. the week ofthanksgiving we could barely walk through ourstorage area. We provided 87 families with thanks-giving dinners.
the food and funds donated will provide neededassistance for the coming winter months.
I thank all who have provided support; yourgenerosity, and compassion is greatly valued. I amprivileged to work with dedicated members of theseven covenant churches who not only provideyear-round donations but staff and maintain theFood Pantry. Every month one of the churches is re-sponsible to provide the volunteers needed to keepthe pantry open Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m.until 12 noon. this is a minimum of 140 volunteerhours every month. During November at least dou-ble that amount was volunteered.

Ten weeks, three trainers, threeteams and lots of LOSERS! Andwhile the challenge hosted by OnThe Go Fitness in Nesconset wasnamed the Biggest Loser, anyonethat completed this 10-week bootcamp, which started in Septemberand finished in December, defi-nitely came out a winner. In addition to competing indi-
vidually, each team had added in-centive to try just that little bitharder as they were also compet-ing for a charity – the team withthe greatest combined weight losswould have $1,500 awarded tothat charity, second place wouldreceive $1,000 and third place$500.
Team Kelco, sponsored byKelco Landscaping in East North-port, nominated Little Shelter An-imal Rescue and Adoption Centeras their chosen charity. Teammembers met weekly for theirteam workout, nutritional guid-ance and weigh in. Weight loss(or gain) was recorded on a hugewall chart for everyone to see. Each week workouts got harder
and teams got smaller but thecommitment level for those that
persevered was extraordinary. Itwas wonderful to see the physicaltransformations take place weekafter week, and the excitement onparticipant’s faces when theystepped on the scale and saw the
numbers go down. Little Shelter fielded several
participants in the contest, andnone worked harder than theirvery own Arleen Leone. At 67years old, Arleen was the oldestcompetitor in the challenge, butproving that you can do anythingyou set your mind to, she showedup with enthusiasm each week toteam workout, committed to aweekly personal training sessionand soon became a regular face atthe gym as she mastered thetreadmill and weight machines.Losing an astounding 32lbs, Ar-leen placed second in thewomen’s contest and received an‘Honorable Mention’ award at theOn The Go Fitness HolidayParty/Biggest Loser Wrapup. Andif Arleen’s success wasn’t enough, they were thrilled to hear the an-nouncement that Little Shelterwon FIRST PRIZE in the team con-test!
Little Shelter would like tothank on the Go Fitness for host-ing this great challenge, KelcoLandscaping for their generoussponsorship, and the team mem-bers for helping us WIN!

Dear Natalie, I love the
designer looksout there but I don’t have thebudget for all those expensiveproducts that make a home beau-tiful. how can I get that look onmy budget? – Nancy r.
Dear Nancy, Creating that designer look on
a budget is actually what I do. Thebudget may be large or small, butthere’s always a budget! If yourlimited budget is holding youback – don’t let it. Thinking cre-atively, using expensive productsin smaller amounts, can stillachieve a great effect. Here are some ways that prin-
ciple can be applied, as well asother money saving tips:
• In the kitchen instead of usingexpensive glass tile for the en-tire backsplash, use a basicbackground tile and add glasstiles randomly, or in a singlerow or as a picture frame be-hind the cook top. Use an in-expensive tile to fill in the rest.
• Instead of replacing kitchencabinets that are in a wood fin-ish you don’t like, consider re-finishing existing cabinets orreplacing doors. (This workswell if the floor plan of yourcabinetry and appliances isstill the best one for yourroom.) This is also the optionthat is best for the environ-ment!
• Instead of creating expensivewainscot raised panels, useready made 4x8 sheets of beadboard and add a chair railmolding cap at the properheight to finish it. (This works
best in a casual home in areassuch as powder room, hallwayand dining room.)
• Use wallpaper that looks liketrompe l’oeil (trick of the eye)painting instead of calling inthe faux finisher. (The samegoes for murals that are panelsof wallpaper instead of handpainted by an artist.)
• Find ready-made bedding thatlooks like custom and createthe paint, carpet and windowtreatments around it.
• Respray tubs that are a datedcolor rather than ripping themout, or look to a bath refittingcompany that can get the jobdone in one day without costlyrip out.
• Look for basic classic styles offurniture that are comfortableand won’t be dated (in a fabricthat is textural rather thanprinted patterns).
• Investing in a good qualityarea rug makes everything lookexpensive.
• Look to your home first to ac-cessorize. Use books, photosand collectibles you’veamassed to not only savemoney, but personalize yourspace.
• Instead of expensive art work, find prints that appeal to youand frame them well.
• Don’t be afraid to mix stylesthat have integrity (perhapsEnglish, French or Americanstyle pieces from past genera-tions) with new purchases.People often make the wrongchoice by keeping what’snewer (mica and leather) andgiving away beautiful timeless
pieces that might need an in-vestment of a little money andsome TLC.
• Look for legitimate sales andbargains in good quality stores. That’s the real bargain, notsomething that’s just cheap!
Start with less and add more asneeded. Sometimes the answer isjust to be willing to wait a little forthe next purchase. What counts isthat it all looks great togetherwhen it’s finally finished.

by June A. LiardiSo you resolved to do some gar-
dening? Here are some easy waysto bring gardening into your life in2010 and beyond.Try a few pots of fresh herbs on
your kitchen windowsill or rightoutside the door. It is wonderful tosnip fresh herbs as you cook. Youcan get an herb kit that includespots, soil and seeds or buy trans-plants or start your own fromseed. To liven up your doorway or
patio, plant containers with brightannuals, bulbs and perennials. Fora shady spot use caladiums, coleus and impatiens in comple-mentary colors and finish withsome trailing variegated vinca todrape over the side. For a sunnyspot, you could try angelonias, verbenas and ageratums in shadesof purple with lavender bacopa to
trail over the edge.Share your gardening with fam-
ily and friends. Have the childrenplan their own garden for thisspring. Give your valentine apretty blooming plant. Bring afriend some seeds and seed start-ing kits. Start some vegetable, herb or flower seeds and plan toshare them with your neighbors. You may be able to start a com-
munity garden. The producecould help to, supply a local soupkitchen. Maybe you could helpstart a teaching garden at yourchild’s school. Or just plant a
pretty vegetable garden in yourfront yard to inspire others.
Plan to visit some public orbotanical gardens during yoursummer vacation this year. Thereare many to see on a day trip bycar. For a longer trip, LongwoodGardens in Pennsylvania is reallybeautiful. When you are out shopping
treat yourself to a nice fresh bou-quet of flowers from time to time.It can really perk you up duringthe cold winter. You can also cuta few branches of forsythia, putthem in a vase of water and waitfor them to bloom in a week or so.Their sunny yellow faces willbrighten your day.
If you have peach (or other fruit)trees, raspberry bushes or grapevines they should be pruned be-fore the weather warms up and

by Scott Posner, CFP, A.A.M.S.If you already have a Roth IRA,
you’re aware of its biggest benefit:Your earnings grow tax free, pro-vided you meet certain condi-tions. If you don’t have a RothIRA, you may want to considerone – and it may be easier for youto do just that in 2010.Before we get to the reasons
why 2010 may be your year toopen or convert to a Roth IRA,let’s look at some differences be-tween Roth and traditional IRAs.If you own a traditional IRA, yourcontributions may be tax-de-ductible, depending on your in-come level. But whether you canmake deductible contributions ornot, your earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis, which means yourmoney can grow faster than itwould if it were placed in an in-vestment on which you paid taxes
every year. On the other hand,Roth IRA contributions are nevertax-deductible, but your earningsgrow tax free, as long as you’veheld your account at least fiveyears and you don’t start takingwithdrawals until you’re at leastage 59½.Furthermore, unlike a tradi-
tional IRA, a Roth IRA does not re-quire you to start taking
distributions when you reach70½. Consequently, you’ll havemore flexibility and freedomwhen it comes to making with-drawals.If you have a traditional IRA,
you might be thinking it’s a goodidea to convert to a Roth IRA be-cause tax free sounds better thantax deferred – and, all thingsbeing equal, tax free would in-deed be better. However, it’s notquite that simple. If you convertyour traditional IRA to a Roth IRA,you’ll have to pay taxes on thosetraditional IRA earnings and con-tributions that had previouslygone untaxed. If you do convert, you’ll be better off if you usemoney held outside your IRA topay the taxes. If you simply takemoney from your IRA, you’ll ob-viously lower the value of your

IRA – and, if you’re under 59½,you may have to pay an additional10% penalty on the amount youwithdraw to pay the taxes. In the past, many investors have
been prohibited from convertingtheir IRAs due to either their taxfiling status or their income.Under previous rules, you couldconvert your traditional IRA to aRoth IRA only if you were marriedand filed a joint return or were asingle filer, and your modified ad-justed gross income (MAGI) was$100,000 or less. But starting in2010, you can convert funds to aRoth IRA even if your MAGI isover $100,000. You will also beable to convert to a Roth if you aremarried and file separate tax re-turns.
And that’s not the only piece ofgood news regarding your conver-
sion ability. As mentioned above, you will have to pay taxes whenyou convert to a Roth IRA. A con-version is usually reported as in-come for the tax year theconversion takes place. However,in 2010 only, your conversionamount will be split and reportedas income for tax years 2011 and2012 unless you elect to reportthe entire conversion amount on
your 2010 taxes. You may find thatspreading the taxes over two yearscan make the conversion more af-fordable.
In any case, consult with yourtax advisor before converting froma traditional IRA to a Roth. If donecorrectly, such a conversion canpotentially make a big differencein your ultimate retirementlifestyle.

submitted by Lawrence Glazer,CLu, ChFC, LutCFYou’ve just lost someone close
to you, and it’s a difficult, stress-ful time. You’re grieving, yetthere’s so much to do: funeralarrangements to make, family tocare for. And as painful as it mayseem, there is also urgent busi-ness concerning your finances. Here’s a checklist, by no meanscomplete, to help you getstarted:
• Contact your loved one’splaces of employment. Findout whether he or she was cov-ered by employee group insur-ance. You should also askabout any pension benefits, ac-crued vacation or sick pay, andcredit union accounts.
• Contact any unions and serv-ice or professional organiza-tions your loved one belongedto. You might be eligible forbenefits through these groups.
• Gather your loved one’s bills. Some loans and service con-tracts are covered by credit lifeinsurance that pays off the bal-ance in the event of a cus-tomer’s death.
Security for Your FutureIf you’ve been left a significant
inheritance, you face further de-cisions for the long term. Somepeople choose to use a smallpart of the money to pay debts,or buy something they might nototherwise be able to afford.
Keep in mind, though, thatyour loved one probably in-tended to provide security foryour future as well. After yourloss, other family members maybe even more dependent on you.You may decide to use your in-heritance to provide security forthem, just as it was provided foryou.Life insurance can play an im-
portant role. A single premiumpolicy can guarantee* your heirsa financial legacy that’s generallyfree from federal income tax.

by John L. Belford, Esq.A permanently incapacitated
person (“PIP”) who has no assetsor income to support himself orherself is entitled to (a) Supple-mental Security Income (“SSI”) forfinancial assistance to provide forshelter, food and clothing and (b)Medicaid assistance for healthcare services (“Medicaid”). If,however, the PIP inherits substan-tial money or assets from his orher parents, the PIP will lose hisor her SSI and Medicaid benefitsuntil he or she spends down theinheritance for basic living andhealth care expenses. If the PIPgives the inheritance to familymembers, to charity or otherwisefails to use the inheritance forbasic needs, the PIP will be dis-qualified for SSI or Medicaid ben-efits until the time that he or shewould have expended his or her
inheritance solely for shelter, food, clothing and health care.In order to avoid the loss of SSI
and Medicaid for the PIP the par-ents can create a testamentarytrust in their last wills and testa-ments. Upon the death of the firstparent, decedent’s entire estatewill be left to the survivingspouse. The will of the secondspouse to die would divide the es-tate assets in equal shares for eachof the children, except that theshare allocated to the PIP will notbe distributed to the PIP. Instead, the share allocable to the PIPwould be placed in a Supplemen-tal Needs Trust (“SNT”) for thesole benefit of the PIP. The termsof the SNT would allow thetrustee of the SNT to provide forthe benefit of the PIP but thetrustee may not pay for the basicneeds of food, shelter, clothing
and health care. The trustee canonly provide non-essential bene-fits to the PIP such as an automo-bile, television, vacations andother non-essentials. The PIPwould continue to receive SSI andMedicaid benefits. Upon thedeath of the PIP the remaining as-sets in the SNT would be distrib-uted to his or her siblings in equalshares.

by Jim WinterLaw enforcement has a new
weapon against arson, and ithappens to be man’s best friend.Arson Dogs have been used
since 1986 to detect accelerants, which can sometimes single outarsonists. Law enforcement
officials, arson dogs and StateFarm first teamed up in 1993through a State Farm-sponsoredAlfred, Maine course. MaineSpecialty Dogs trained the dogsto the standards of the MaineCriminal Justice Academy. Since1993, State Farm has sponsored
more than 200 arson K-9 teamsin 40 states, the District of Co-lumbia, and three Canadianprovinces.A dog’s keen sense of smell al-
lows him to pinpoint where a firemay have started. To continuetheir work fighting arson, dogsmust demonstrate they haven’tlost that ability and must betested each year by Maine Spe-cialty Dogs to assure they meetthe standards of the Maine Crim-inal Justice Academy.Arson dogs and their handlers
must be recertified on an annualbasis. This is critical because ithelps establish the credibility ofthe dog and dog handler’s skills, especially when cases go tocourt. It’s very difficult to provethat a fire was arson and connectsomeone to setting it, so thearson dog adds a powerfulweapon to the investigator’sproof. State Farm pays to train 10
teams each year. To learn moreabout the program, visit state-farm.com.

Most do not realize that the con-dition “flat feet”, which is a termused to describe the flattening ofthe foot’s inner arch, has more ofan effect on the entire structureand stability of the body ratherthan the foot alone. A flattenedarch causes the individual to putmore stress and pressure on theinner part of the foot, causing therest of the body to mold to its im-perfection. As a result the bodybecomes off centered and awk-wardly balanced. When the footimbalance is present, there is anegative impact on the knees, hips, pelvis and spine. Some pa-tients must have these abnormalforces reduced before they canachieve improved spinal function.
Pronation is the rotation of abody part either inward or down-ward. The foot naturally pressesdownward or inward when walkingor running. However, over-prona-tion causes a decrease in archheight, which can cause discom-fort not only to the foot, but also tothe entire body. Pronation is asso-
ciated with the loss of arch heightthat causes the foot to rest unset-tled and off balanced. Pro-nationmay become permanent if nottreated, and will become progres-sively worse with time. One mayask, “How do I know if I havepronated feet?” Although it is bestto determine ones medical stanceby consulting a doctor, generally apronated foot flares outward dur-ing standing. Also, the Achillestendons and kneecaps may bepushed inward from the midline ofthe legs. If any of these problemsare present, shoe orthotics may bea healthy choice!
Patients who suffer from thisanatomical imbalance can find re-lief in custom fit shoe orthotics.Shoe orthotics, also know asSpinal Pelvic Stabilizers, are shoeinserts that cause the foot to re-main centered, helping the body torealign itself to equilibrium. Onebeneficial aspect of using shoe or-thotics is that they are able to cor-rect an existing arch problem forlong-term, relief. Overall, orthotics
contribute to full body wellness. For example, if one were to sufferfrom severe neck pain, it does notnecessarily mean that the pain isconcentrated in the neck region. In fact, the pain could be from ex-cess stress to the lower back ofthe legs.
Shoe orthotics can fit into mostshoe wear with ease. Using thelatest orthotics technology, doctorshave the ability to take precisemeasurements of the foot to en-sure maximum comfort.

Donna Marie Sanders of Nissequogue, a thirdgrader at Harbor Country Day School, enthusiasticallyreceived her prize as a winner of the “Take a Duck toClass” essay contest. The island-wide contest focusedon the importance of community, and was sponsoredby TD Bank in association with the Long Island Ducksbaseball organization. Donna read her winning essay in front of the entire
school and was then presented with a Visa gift cardfrom TD Bank’s St. James branch manager Ed Pe-sapane. Although thrilled with the card, the best partof Donna’s prize was the opportunity to meet AtlanticLeague MVP Ray Navarette and of course QuackerJack, the Long Island Duck’s mascot.Navarette gave the students a thoughtful and engag-
ing talk about commitment and working hard. To Har-bor students, that was a familiar message. Theirschool’s motto is sine labore nihil, or, without work, nothing.

Chiropractors want to knowwhere you hurt, but their spe-cialty is finding out why youhurt.
By using physical examina-tions and Xrays when necessary, chiropractors detect, locate, andcorrect spinal misalignment,(also called subluxation). Ratherthan treating just your symptoms, chiropractors are trained to findthe root of your problem andcorrect it. Once the problem isidentified, the solution varies. Inaddition to manual adjustments, your chiropractor may recom-mend other procedures or healthregimens. Remember, chiroprac-tic care works with your body’snatural strengths and withoutdrugs or surgery.
Did you know that doctors of chiropractic have been to col-lege for a minimum of six years? They complete as much course
work in anatomy and physiologyas most medical doctors. Andafter they receive their degreesfrom an accredited chiropracticcollege, all chiropractors mustpass rigorous exams and be li-censed by the state before theycan open a practice. That’s howdoctors of chiropractic becomeexperts in the spinal column andnervous system.
Chiropractic offers safe and ef-fective healthcare without drugsor surgery and is unique in itsfocus on the total health of thepatient. So it’s really no surprisethat according to the latestGallup survey 90% of all peoplewho go to a chiropractor saytheir care was effective.
Care to know more about chiropractic? Now that you know why chi-
ropractic is so effective for somany people, why not make anappointment for an initial con-sultation or an exam with a chi-ropractor in your area? He or shewill be happy to talk to youabout the type of care and pa-tient services their office pro-vides. Getting to know achiropractor could help you getthe most out of life.

P O E T ’ S C O R N E R
the Christmas bells have all become quiet,As we usher in the New year! But it was a wonderful season,Which was really filled with good cheer!
So now let’s prepare for the coldest month,Which of course is the shortest one too.And for that we all can be thankful,As we struggle to “make it through.”
But fear not dear friend, it will get better,About half-way through this time.As cupid shoots his arrowsAnd sends verses of love that rhyme.
I’m speaking about St. valentine’s Day,A reminder of those we hold dear. With a chance to show our affection,And perhaps some additional, “good cheer!”
For this is what life is all about,As all the “old timers” will say.“Don’t hope and dream for tomorrow,But enjoy and live for today!”
So be sure and show your affection,And express all the love in your heart.to that special one that you truly adore,And you’ll place “on the top of your chart.”
St. Valentine’s Dayby David F. McKell
Reincarnationby John Taratunio, Fairfield Condos
I often wonder who I wasBefore I was, who I amthere are those who Find personal reliefBy having reincarnation As their firm belief
I don’t know if this is trueI’m only sure I’m not youSo whatever these beliefs may beI’m only sure I glad I’m me.
If true then somewhereBack in timeI could have been a kingor someone’s canine

Go through your garden journalor notes about last year’s gardenso you can decide what you wantto plant this year. Snuggle up onecold winter’s day with the seedcatalogs that have been fillingyour mailbox. Some popularitems do sell out. If you are goingto buy your seeds and transplantsat your local nursery, use the cat-alogs as a shopping and informa-tion guide. I cut out the picturesand descriptions of what I buy orwant to buy and put them in abinder. That way I have an easyreference for all the information
I need. Leave a space on the pageand note where and when youplanted the item and then how itdid. It really helps.
