The Junior League of Lufkin welcomes all women who are committed to volunteerism. The League educates and challenges its members to be effective community leaders, advocates, and individuals. Trained volunteers and collaborators will address and respond to community needs with positive solutions. The League focus is to educate and empower individuals, primarily children, by providing the resources and tools that will address all aspects of their well being.

Leadership Lines

Wow! We have accomplished so much as a League this past fall. We have closed the door to an

outstanding 2010 year, but we will not forget the good work we have done in our community. As I write this, I am reflecting on what we have done in the last few months.

In September, our new website was revealed, followed by unveiling of the Message Board located under the Members Only. In October, we provided JL Members the opportunity to pay their JL Dues and Fundraising Contributions online.

The Vision Screening Committee chaired by Nickie Ashby set a new record this fall by screening 4,558 children in Angelina County. What a fabulous accomplishment for the Vision Screening Committee and all Members who volunteered their time for such a worthy cause. The November Family Nights at Coston Elementary was a huge success. Thank you Shawn Dunn for coordinating the event! The League appreciates your hard work. Susan Harris, Simply Done Chair provided the ACE (alternative) campus, shirts and sweatshirt. The project also provided the Rainbow Room with baby/toddler items. October’s Super Saturday Pumpkin Party was a fun filled family event at the Museum of East Texas. The second Super Saturday was held in December. Santa was present at the Museum of East Texas to hear the childrens’ Christmas wishes.

We welcome in the 2011 year eager to serve as our theme for the 2010-2011 year is “Here to Serve”! The 2011 year is full of JL events. We still have so much to do and accomplish. Charity Ball in February, Family Nights in March at Garrett Elementary, Spring Market in April, Career Conference in May, and Camp Get Fit/KIK in July. There are two Super Saturdays scheduled. One will be held at the end of February to celebrate Mardi Gras and a weekend in May to “Celebrate Paint”. We will end the JL year with School Supply/Backpack Drive in August. Let’s roll up our sleeves and jump in to continue to make a difference in Angelina County. Remember it is the little things that can make a difference in a person’s life. We are “Here to Serve”… so let’s do just that. Know that the time you serve within our League makes a difference.

On a final note, I will be conducting a focus group session with various League members on creative ways to promote our message to the community. Members that are interested in attending the focus group do not need to have a leadership role in the League. Everyone has a voice in the League whether you volunteer in a leadership role or you volunteer behind the scenes. Please contact me if you are interested in attending a focus group and have suggestions.

When Natalie asked me to chair the Charity Ball raffle I was a little apprehensive. I thought, “I hate selling

raffle tickets, and you want me to chair raffle sales?” But, I thought about it and realized the one raffle I actually like and feel good about selling is to our Charity Ball. Do you realize, in addition to the countless volunteer hours we provide to our community, we also contributed

over $80,000, last year alone! We would NOT have been able to do this without raffle sales. Dollar for dollar, these tickets represent pure profit, money that is placed back into our community, and into our league funded/owned projects. Why did you choose to be part of the Junior League? For me, I am proud to be a Junior League member because of what we accomplish for our local community of women and children. Through our efforts, we have 1. Delivered over 550 backpacks to local schools. 2. Assisted LISD in vision screening hundreds of students in grades PK, K, 1, 3, 5, 7. 3. Supported CPS with stocking, clothing, childcare needs such as formula, food, and hygiene items, etc. for children with emergent needs, including those waiting to be placed into the foster care system. 4. Annually, we award $10,000 in scholarships, to high school graduates throughout Angelina County. Last year, our financial donations exceeded $55,000. Organizations awarded include the Museum of East Texas, the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council, Angelina Alliance for Children, Angelina County & Cities Health District, Boys and Girls Club of East Texas, Goodwill Industries, Hospice in the Pines, Mosaic Center, Lufkin Adult Learning Center, Mosaic Center, and the Pregnancy Help center. This could not have been done without raffle sales!!!

Furthermore, the items donated are amazing! What lady would not want to win a Rolex watch? What man wouldn’t want to win a Browning Rifle? The iPad is a hot item that made a lot of peoples ‘wish list’ at Christmas. And, the $800 worth of groceries and gas would certainly help any budget! Like most people, I have always had difficulty selling raffle tickets; I usually just buy them myself. But, this raffle has always been the exception. Most people want to purchase these tickets. Our raffle has terrific prizes, and you can emphasize the money raised is used to better our community. Thus, it raises awareness of why you are in the Junior League anyway! Basically, the prizes make selling the raffle tickets easy, if you just ask! Ideas for sales…. •Makealistofpeopletoasktobuytickets.Friends,family,neighbors,sustainers, fellow employees, your hairdresser, nail tech... Try to get a couple of them marked off your list every day. If you sell $300 in raffle--- a free Charity Ball ticket is yours! I encourage you to get out there this year and sell, sell, sell. If you know of a great location to set up a table to sell tickets, please let me know… And, please sign up to help us in raising money for our community!

Not only will we be celebrating 35 years of the Charity Ball, but we will also be honoring our fantastic Helping Hands Sponsors!

Family Nights

The second annual Family Nights began at Coston Elementary on November 16th, 2010. We were pleased to serve about 175 parents

and students a free, hot meal. More importantly, the families ate and talked together during mealtime. This “family time” is a treat because most families rarely get to eat a meal together around the table

during the school week because we are so busy going in different directions! Our League members did an outstanding job serving everyone and then raffled off the leftover pizzas – much to the winner’s delight! Another highlight of the evening was the kids’ participation in different activities after the meal as their parents listened to a

presentation. The most popular activities were the “Cheer Clinic” and “Basketball”, while “Sign Language/ Games” and “Smart Board Videos” were also well attended. Special thanks to League member / LMS Cheer Coach, Caron Cook, and numerous LMS Cheerleaders who lead about 30 young girls with dreams of being cheerleaders someday! Kudos to League members Kathi White and Karen Harris for supervising and playing basketball with about 40 energetic, young boys! Blessings to “Family Nights” Co-Chair Lindsey Goforth and Provisional Kim Doyle who taught the youngest students with smart board videos! Thankfully many LISD staff participated in this event, including “Chachi” Cordero, who taught sign language and games. We are grateful that one of the League sponsors, Brookshire Brother’s, continues to graciously support our mission! Brookshire Brother’s nutritionist Amy McLeod spoke to parents about shopping and preparing meals on a budget. After the informative power-point presentation, the parents picked up give-away items and visited with other community organizations that provided information about free resources available in the community. The community organizations that were represented included the Workforce Solutions, Kurth Memorial Library, AC Adult Learning Center, LISD “Child Find”, LISD Technology, LISD Speech Therapy and Pregnancy Help Center. The teachers of Coston Elementary donated several books for each student and no one went home empty-handed! The best part of the evening was making “connections” with people that we would not normally get to meet. Many of the community organizations touched a new population and connected them with community resources that they had never known about. For example, Paula Havard with the Pregnancy Help Center raffled off two infant car seats, spoke about free car seats, formula, and other resources available to needy individuals. It was gratifying to see one of the infant car seat winners was a pregnant teenager enrolled in the parenting education classes at LHS. Paula Havard connected with this young woman and planned to visit with her more to offer further assistance to meet her needs as a new parent. In evaluating all that we accomplished that night at Coston Elementary, I would submit that we were successful if we made just one child smile, if we fed just one hungry person, if we kept one child safe riding in a car seat, and if we helped one parent find the resources they needed. Finally, we were successful if we showed that the women of the Junior League of Lufkin love this community and are committed to serve the women and children of Angelina County.

1. I have a wonderful husband and 2 boys, ages 12 and 8, that I’m extremely proud of, even though I don’t brag about them much. I’m also the Executive Director at CASA of the Pines.

2. I am survivor of a brain aneurysm (with 22 hours of surgery) in 2002. I also make some amazing homemade salsa!

3. I have traveled around the world from California to New York, with stops in between in Hawaii, Japan, Germany and London. I also have 2 wonderful boys and an awesome husband!

4. I teach first grade-dual language at Burley Primary and have a 3 year old daughter that is active in gymnastics.

5. I have a wonderful husband and 4 year old son and work at DP Solutions.

6. I work full-time from home and have the amazing talent of being able to change a diaper in just about any situation in 60 seconds or less!

7. I’m a Women’s Healthcare Nurse Practitioner and can help League members with women’s health issues.

8. I’m the Marketing Director at Urgent Doc and my hidden talent is so hidden I don’t even know what it is!

Wearing eye protection is essential to maintain good ocular health. Whether working in the yard or on

the job, protecting those peepers is critical to help insure a lifetime of visual happiness. When should one consider wearing eye protection? Daily! As an optometrist, I generally recommend that my patients wear

safety glasses while performing everyday tasks like mowing, weed-eating, or when standing around while someone else performs these tasks. Safety glasses are also a must for anyone whose career or hobbies involve cutting, grinding, or welding. An injury can occur when a high velocity object enters or opens the globe. This type of injury may cause an infection which in some cases can lead to loss of the eyeball itself. Scarring can occur after removal of foreign bodies like rust or metal. When in just the right location, this scarring can cause a reduction of visual acuity. One should also consider wearing protection goggles for sporting events like tennis, baseball, handball, or racquetball. Whether the threat is the ball itself or a finger or an elbow, one must consider the eye protection options. Vision loss, discomfort, and pain can be eliminated (or at least reduced) by the addition of goggles which are available with or without a prescription. Urging both kids and adults to wear safety glasses while playing with paintball or airsoft guns has become a passion of mine. There are numerous cases of irreversible vision loss each year due to paintball or airsoft gun injuries. Incidents generally happen unexpectedly either before the game begins or shortly thereafter. Make it a rule to have your child put his safety gear on while in the house or car and do not allow him to remove it until back in that exact location. This will protect him from that stray “bullet” that could result in severe ocular damage or significant vision loss.

In my opinion, eye protection is essential for all patients with a “lazy eye” (or amblyopia). I would prefer that all my amblyopic patients wear glasses full time, even if their actual need for glasses is low. This provides a barrier between the eye itself and potential threats. The goal is to protect the “good eye” from simple, day-to-day dangers like paper cuts, fingernail scratches, or flying objects that could cause harm. As you can see, it is imperative to protect your eyes and your vision. The benefits of wearing safety glasses definitely exceed the risks of not having them on. Hopefully, after reading this, you will at least think about it the next time you pick up that hammer and nail or drop your child off at a sporting event.

Happy New Year!! It’s hard to believe we are already in 2011. We have a lot of wonderful things planned for our meetings this year. “Cottage Meetings” are back for January! These are some of the most loved meetings as they give

us an opportunity to get know each other a little better in a relaxed environment of a member’s home. Cottage Meetings will take place on Tuesday, January 11th, with Social Time beginning at 6:30pm and the meeting starting at 7:00pm. Please refer to the list of homes to see where you will be meeting. We do not have a food sponsor for January due to the different meeting locations so your home hostess will be contacting you with a food item to bring. Please make every effort to attend and bring your food item. (Remember, you will only have

to bring food once this year. Yay!) Our February meeting is one you will not want to miss! Johnson Pools and Spas is our Helping Hands meeting sponsor, and Popeye’s is our food sponsor. Be sure to bring your appetite to the March meeting- Gregg Durham is our food sponsor this month. As you may remember Gregg catered our Christmas party, and everything was absolutely delicious! Please note this March meeting date has been changed to Wednesday, March 2nd to accommodate AJLI President Delly Beekman. DP Solutions is our Helping Hands meeting sponsor in April, and Outback Steakhouse is graciously providing the food. Our May meeting is our End-of-the-Year Celebration. More details will follow as we get closer to time. Rod with Roderick of Texas will be providing the gorgeous floral centerpieces for each meeting. His arrangements are just beautiful! …to sweat the small stuff.

Well, yes…perhaps I am going completely nuts by suggesting that we make a fuss over sweating the small stuff; but, it is the New Year and time to regroup so hear

me out before you turn the page!! In early November, I had a very stressful week battling some of the big stuff that is on my plate. I know we all have these weeks, and I was really losing my sense of humor and feeling very burdened from all the big stuff. And then an amazingly simple and small thing happened – a friend sent me a text at 7:30 in the morning and said “Jen, I am in the line at Starbucks and I have a tall extra hot chocolate for you with one pump of mocha and half a pump of vanilla with whip on top and I am dropping it off for you before you take the kids to school”. That simple small gesture stopped me in my tracks – and made my day. Then the next day, a friend left ant poison on my door step to help with an ant problem I was whining about weeks before…and another friend sent me a text out of the blue and said “Love you Jen, thinking of you today and I am glad you are my friend”. That week I received so many random and dear small gestures I completely forgot about the weight of the big stuff I was sorting through and happiness and peace swelled in my heart because I simply felt loved and a part of a quilt of relationships that I cherish. I have always been a big picture person saying a million times in work and friendships that we should look at something from the 30,000 foot level; but, that week I discovered that I need to look right in front of my nose instead. Think of all those sayings - “the details are the spice of life”, “the truth is in the details”, “true happiness lies in taking genuine interest in the details”, “details distinguish one man from another”. And since that week in early November I started consciously embracing the small stuff and giving the big stuff to God to sort out. And I am not just saying I am giving it to God like we good Southern women have all said since our youth; but I am TRULY and honestly giving every last big thing to God. I am a control freak of sorts so this has not been easy, and I have resisted and tripped and had kicking fits, but I am truly going to follow my grandmother’s advice this time and TRULY COMPLETELY give the big stuff to God. And in return he is giving me a plate full of small stuff to treasure. I am loving this view from up close and am aiming to enrich my authentic relationships with fewer defenses and distractions.

Most of my deepest thoughts occur while I am driving and when I am about to sleep. Those are the times when I write thank you notes in my mind, it’s when I talk to God, and when I am most still in my mind and aware of my blessings. For some reason I rarely actually put my gratitude down on paper in a real note or pick up the phone just to say I love you – but I think it and feel the gratitude every day for the important people in my life. People I am close to know I am squishy and love to hug and am sentimental and stupid sappy – but I have to still admit, I have been a terrible small gesture giver! I want so badly to be better at these small gestures so that the people I care about know how important they are to me. But for some reason, I wear out and do not follow through with so many of the things I would like to do for the people I love. My one and only New Year’s resolution for 2011 is to continue to let God handle the big stuff while I focus on sweating the small stuff and making sure the people that I appreciate know how important they are to me. I may never be the person to write as many thank you notes as I would like – but I can still do small stuff like text a quick note of encouragement, I can hug their children so they know I love them too, I can listen better, I can bake an extra batch of cookies and deliver it as a surprise, or I can just surprise them with their favorite coffee drink for no reason. As a recipient of so many dear random gestures lately, I can tell you with authority that it really can make a person’s day – or week - or life. With God in charge of the big stuff…I think we can all take a time out to sweat the small stuff and notice the details and treasure the people in our lives and let them know their importance to us. This is what JLL is about for our community as well…so let’s sweat the small stuff together and make a difference in the lives of the people we love and care about.

What an amazing 2010! We have been very busy and have a wonderful group of Provisional’s

this term! I am truly proud to be among them. To everyone who volunteered their time for Family Nights, keeping children busy is a large task! Great job to all who

participated. The “Done in A Day” project was a great success! We would like to thank Nancy Winston for having the baskets put together for CPS Rainbow Room at such a beautiful store -- The Very Thing. Stephanie Love said it took about forty-five minutes to put twenty baskets together. What a big surprise for some families. Also, I would love to say Vision Screening is one of the most fulfilling things to experience. We can see how Nickie Ashby, Tracy Nichols and the entire Vision Screening committee touch the lives of so many children! It’s a great feeling to leave Vision Screening knowing the children you have helped. Thank you for your hard work and dedication and making it an enjoyable experience for me and everyone around you. And last but definitely not least, to our wonderful Provisional Chair Suzy Childers. You are truly a joy and blessing to be around. Everyone you talk to, you touch. What a uplifting, high spirited, beautiful person you are to be around! We all thank you for being there and making this such a great experience.
