The journey so far….

Like many areas of our Diocese, Portishead Deanery encompasses a wonderfully varied range of geography and infrastructure. Including

rural farms and coastal regions, industry and innovation; our villages, towns and suburbs support an equally rich diversity of worshipping

communities. Our ancient churches minister alongside ecumenical partnerships and fresh expressions held in schools; whilst pioneer

ministry and lay workers take the ‘good news’ into the heart of community life.

We have 22 parishes serving a population of approximately 89,220 (2011census) and our Common Fund Membership stands at 2,180.

However, with around 6,500 new homes planned for our Deanery in coming years and too many people still not touched by God’s message

in our current population, our vision focuses on reaching out in welcome to share our faith. We delight in a percentage number of Christians

in the Deanery which is fractionally higher than the national average and see that we welcome more older worshippers than nationally—but

are also acutely aware that there are too many under the age of 44 who have not been reached. Thus our vision looks to readdress our

mission to the younger generations. We have committed to share good practice and learn from each other in order to discover fresh

expressions of welcome and embrace new aspects of social media, as we seek to grow God’s Kingdom ever greater in Portishead Deanery.

To achieve all these things we will seek help from others within and outside the Diocese and will engage in a pioneering approach. We will

audit our resources in order to place them where are most needed and share expertise and experience across parish boundaries.

The shift in culture which has enabled this vision to develop, began in early 2014 following the last Diocesan Clergy Gathering. We

embraced the concept of getting to know each other better through a gathered community and so determined that all Synods since would

meet in ‘gathered’ style. Through this seemingly simple change, our members from across the Deanery have begun to get to know each other

better, share experiences and offer caring support. Our decision to begin every triennium with a shared Eucharist ensures that our

foundation is prayerful, scriptural and sacramental. Our Clergy Chapters have also changed through our regular ‘conversations’. These

opportunities equip us to develop deeper knowledge of each other’s ministries and stronger mutual care. Our first 2 day retreat in January

2017 cemented growing relationships and enabled new colleagues to more quickly become part of the fellowship.

After much conversation and discussion, our Mission Action Plan began to take shape in the early months of 2017. What we present now we

know is the beginning of a journey which will develop and grow in coming years. It will never be a finished project until the Kingdom is

fulfilled; but we are confident that we have started a process will lead us closer to that perfection .

We are determined to make the pilgrimage of growth together, as people of God united in faith.

We will share in that task with our ecumenical brothers and sisters, aware of our place in the wider church of the Diocese and worldwide.

We set out on this mission based on the core belief in Portishead Deanery—that we work better together.

Our Vision We are part of the mission of God, sharing the Diocesan Priorities

Housing Developments in the Deanery of Portishead North Somerset County Council Site Allocation Plan March 2016 –2026 - approx 2,500 homes

‘The housing allocations set out in this in this Plan are identified to deliver the Core Strategy requirement of 20,895 dwellings to be built over the period 2006 to 2026. Over the period April 2006 to April 2015 – 7,426 dwellings have been built leaving a residual requirement of 13,559 dwellings to be identified to 2026.' The authority’s executive has agreed to include room for another 821 homes into its housing strategy after being told by a Government inspector that it was not providing sufficient land for houses to be built over the next five years’ (North Somerset Times – September 2017)

West of England Joint Spacial Planning – November 2016 for period up to 2036 – approx 3,600 This document suggests up to 3,600 houses. Identified site: Nailsea and Backwell – thought to be 2800/ 800 respectively. The rationale being that it is in a ‘sustainable community, outside the Green Belt and avoids flood-zone areas.

Deanery of Portishead Deanery Strategy - First statement - fifth draft Our diocesan strategic priorities:

1. Placing mission and evangelism at the heart of all we do

Vision

We see ourselves as part of the mission of God. The expression of this will be both seeking the lost and feeding the hungry, whilst expecting God to be at work here. The expression of this will be both seeking and saving the lost and feeding the hungry. We recognise the need to be both a Christian presence in every community and to preach the Gospel afresh in each generation.

We are all part of the Church of England Christian Community in the Deanery of Portishead, one of five deaneries in the Bath Archdeaconry of the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

Ethos

We, as individuals and churches, need to work together, recognising that the gifts and skills for effective ministry in one particular place may not currently reside there. We commit ourselves to working as part of the deanery, as a whole, being a place of mutual support and the route to developing new mission action plans.

Context

Even within a relatively small geographical area of the diocese we are aware of contexts that embrace:

Rural, semi-rural, suburban and town Ancient sites and new build Good transport links and none Tourism, incomers and settled populations Varying levels of relationship with the city of Bristol (which is in a different diocese)

Priorities

We acknowledge our gratitude to those, of all ages, who have prayed and worked to bring the deanery to this point. They will continue to enable ministry to thrive. Prayers and worship in our individual churches remain key. We now discern, tentatively, and in no particular order, three areas of under-performance, or inadequate investment, at present:

Work on new housing developments. We want, at the early point of new development, to raise issues about what makes a good community. We want to welcome newcomers. We want to work with the diocese to resource this work.

Work with children, young people and young families, church-based and community focused. We have under-performed here against our deanery demographic.

Telling our stories. We want to understand each other better, in order to support and assist, identify evangelists & community leaders and offer encouragement to share best practice. A year one priority might be to understand what we have got and who we are.

Deanery Youth and Schools Worker report. Sept 2017 On the 22nd of July we had our second Noah’s Ark youth event (NAZOOF). We knew it would be a tough act to follow our previous event, especially that this event was in the first weekend of the summer holidays. We were blessed to have over 60 young people (a third of that coming from the Deanery) attend the event. We had Rich Miles who runs the Movement Worship event in rural areas of the diocese come to speak to us. He shared with the young people the vital nature of understanding the Bible and how it relates to their personal faith. We were hoping to run an open air worship space in the Zoo, but the Great British summer put a stop to that. Gordano Valley Church supplied the worship. I was able to bring my 5 year old son Ruaridh to the event, which was great and a special mention needs to go the young people from Christchurch Clevedon who took him under their wing and when it came time for food he didn’t want to sit with me, he wanted to sit with the boys. There was great response to the event and some huge thanks needs to go out to Noah’s Ark who gave a phenomenal discount for the day and provided all the catering for the event which allowed it to run smoothly, leaving the leaders and I to focus on faith elements of the day. The 15th annual skatefest in Nailsea was on the 15th of July. We were on track for having one of the busiest years there’s been. We had the biggest sign up of competitors, with some travelling from as far away as Sweden! Unfortunately the rain got the better of the day, and we to stop the event halfway through for safety reasons. The first time in 15 years this has happened. 150 people stayed on to see the prize giving where I had the opportunity to share a short gospel message with them.

Over the next month I am involved with the Counties resource GSUSlive. It is a mobile RE trailer that will be operating throughout North Somerset, Bristol & Newport. I have been able to get it into Nailsea and Clevedon Schools where I will be delivering a weeks’ worth of RE lessons to yrs 7-9, where the students look at the ideas of fear, rejection and forgiveness through an interactive multimedia experience. This is a fantastic experience to take into both the schools I work closely with and is having fantastic feedback from the staff that are using it this week in Nailsea. Neil Wylie

Portishead – yes lots, continually in different places Long Ashton – small devts + 1 large (4,500) possibility Backwell – 60 house devt + 1 medium size possibility and small fill in gaps. Unidentified – 1 ‘not at present’, 1 ‘yes’, 1 mixed pattern with need to look at all

The challenge in Portishead is with so much development in the town, how do we generate continued passion here
