What’s new in development?

After a very successful year in 2014, the YWCA would like to give a huge thank you to all of our donors. Because of your support year after year, together we make Cortland a better place to live, work, and grow. Without your

support we wouldn’t be able to serve over 3,000 families in the Cortland Community. Your gift has touched many lives beyond measure and we are so thankful for your support!

The Clothesline Project is on display for the month of April at the YWCA of Cortland in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness month. This powerful visual display brings awareness and bears witness to violence against women.

While cuts in State funding are still a harsh reality for AVV, there is still much work to be done. Through generous donations from individuals and community organizations, AVV continues to provide vital services to our community.

AVV recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SUNY Cortland, solidifying our partnership in supporting those affected by sexual assault and domestic violence on campus and in our community.

Upcoming Days to Remember: April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Bridges for Kids had a great first quarter! For National Mentoring Month, First Niagara Bank sponsored a “Mentoring Matters” video contest. The YWCA of Cortland was chosen as one of eight finalists and voting began through social media. Thanks to our supporters, BFK took fourth place and received a $1,000 mentoring grant. Bridges for Kids also received a generous donation from Allstate Insurance through local Agent Shirley Eizember at Pickney Insurance Agency. The YWCA would like to thank each and every supporter of Bridges for Kids who help us provide wonderful programming and awesome field trips to children in our community. From the Build It program with Lowe’s, Science Center field trip sponsored by Kings Daughters, Pizza Palooza admission paid for by Tioga Hardwoods, or a day at Cornell thanks to their Community Partnership Fund, those in the BFK program are so thankful.

Childcare

We will be hosting our 2nd Annual Shoe Drive Fundraiser from April 8 - July 8. Bring your unwanted shoes to the YWCA or any participating business and the YW will receive funding for each pair of shoes donated. The shoes will be sent to impoverished countries around the world where shoes in good condition will be given to those in need. Shoes that need repair will be used by the people of that country to start, maintain, and grow a micro enterprise. Because of this opportunity, individuals are able to feed, clothe, and house their families. Get rid of your unwanted shoes, support the YWCA of Cortland, and help those in need overseas. It truly is a win-win-win!

Health and Fitness

The YWCA is planning a Summer Camp from June 29 through August 28, 2015 for children 5-12 years old plus a Counselor-in-Training program for youth 13-15 years old. Let the YW be your guide this summer as children travel across the country in 9 weeks! Each week, the camp will visit and explore a new and exciting place including: The Big Apple, Disney Adventure, Everything’s Bigger in Texas, The Red Carpet, and more. Meals, field trips, and swim are included. The YWCA offers full time, part time, and per diem care with sibling discounts. Enrollment opens to the general public at the end of April, so pick up a registration packet today! Allow the YW to be part of your child’s summer, where they will meet new friends, try new things, and most of all, create a summer full of fond memories!

Model Moms received a Community Health Grant from Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield which will provide funding for childcare and nutritious lunches while moms attend meetings. It also provides funding to purchase the moms a kitchen appliance so they can use the skills they learned to create healthy meals in their own homes.

New at the YWCA is early bird Zumba with instructor Sonya Langan. Get your day started on the right foot with classes on Monday and Wednesday at 6:15am. Dance, groove, and shake off up to 1000 calories per class! Not only does Zumba increase cardiovascular health and strength, it also offers mood-boosting benefits to power you through the day. Try a free class on Wednesday, April 22nd by calling 607-753-9651 to register!
