RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA) Our program offers an oppor tunity to come togeth-er in a small group setting to learn more about our faith. The sessions prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are welcome to participate in the process with our ques-tions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own presupposi-tions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise. Baptized in the Lord

Dorothy Darlene Ward Ágata Romero Sánchez

Let us remember in our prayers the newly baptized, the Par-ents and the godparents as together they begin their journey with Christ. PRE-BAPTISM CLASS is required for fir st-time parents. Parents are asked to call Patty Schwerin at 412-563-0858 to register and arrange for a scheduled time for this class. BAPTISM SCHEDULING—At the present time, Baptisms will be scheduled only one child/family at a time as advised by the Diocese. We will be able to accommodate the number of people allotted by the current mandated requirements for ca-pacity for the church where the Baptism is to take place. Social distancing must be observed and face masks are required. Since we have 4 deacons, baptism will now be scheduled on Sundays at the 3 locations—SCS, RES, SPX— after the last Sunday Mass.

The Greek word Epiphany (epiphanos), which means appearance or manifestation or showing forth, is used to describe Jesus’ first appearance to the Gentiles. Originally the word Epiphany referred to the visit of a king to the people of his provinces. "Epiphany" refers to God’s Self-revelation as well as to the revelation of Jesus as His Son to all man-kind. Epiphany is an older celebration than the feast of Christmas, having originated in the East in the late second century. In Italy and Spain, the gifts traditionally associated with the Christmas season are exchanged today, on the feast of the Epiphany. Among Italians, it is believed that the gifts are brought by the old woman, Befana (from Epiphany), whereas Spanish custom attributes the gifts to the Kings or Magi. In the Western Church, the feast commemorates the coming of the Magi as the first manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. In the Eastern Church, the feast also commemorates the Bap-tism of Christ. The angels revealed Jesus to the shepherds, and the star revealed him to the Magi, who had already received hints of Him from the Jewish Scriptures. Later, God the Fa-ther revealed Jesus' identity to Israel at his Baptism in the Jordan. In the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus revealed himself as the promised Messiah. Finally, Jesus revealed himself as a miracle worker at the wedding of Cana, thus revealing his Di-vinity. These multiple revelations are all suggested by the Feast of the Epiphany.

A message to our parishioners from the St Vin-cent de Paul Society...

As this year comes to an end we wish to thank all of you for enabling the Society to aid the poor and distressed in our parish area. Because of your generous donations you have been able to help approximately 1064 people through the food pantry and other direct financial support in the amount of $63,410. As you know this is a temporal measurement only, and God is the only one who knows the effect it has had on the spirits of our “friends in need”.

So with gratitude and appreciation for your role in this ministry we thank you and wish you a Blessed and Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas and a Blessed 2021 Invitation to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament dur-ing the new year Please remember that we have Adora-tion of the Blessed Sacrament every First Friday at St. Catherine’s after 8:45AM Mass, after 8am Mass every First Saturday at Resurrection and Every last Wednesday of the month at St. Pius X after 7PM Mass.
