The Psalmist in Psalm 77 was extremely discouraged! His soul refused to be comforted. He was troubled and overwhelmed. He couldn’t sleep and the thought of God did not comfort him. The despair had gotten so bad that he had begun to wonder if God had forsaken him—what a lonely, sad place.
We may ask, “What was the cause of the despair?” The answer lies in verse five and the first part of verse six. It reads, “I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times. I call to remembrance my song in the night…”
Ironically, the past was good! He could see God working in his life and in others. He had experienced a song in the night. He was in despair because he was aware that his present circumstances did not measure up.
Praise be to God, he didn’t stay this way, he began to turn the corner. He would say in Psalm 77:10-12:
10 And I said, “This is my anguish; But I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.”
11 I will remember the works of the LORD; Surely I will rememberYour wonders of old.
12 I will also meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds.
He realized that he was looking at everything all wrong. Instead, of looking at the past glory and being depressed, he should have been looking at the past and letting it BLESS! The simple fact that God had worked mightily in the past meant there was hope for the future!
So, may we remember everything God has done and anticipate what God will do. May we think on these things intently, and may we testify to His goodness!
Thanks to my Sharon Church family and other praying friends who helped us bear the death of my husband and our Daddy Buck. Words cannot express the things that were presented to us during this time of life. May God bless the people who helped us bear this grief, were part of the service and visited the family at this time. We ask that you continue to pray that God will give us the strength to serve Him the rest of our days.
