Charismatic Prayer Group

The One!

When people are dating, they are often asked, “Is

this the one?” Meaning is he or she the person

you want to spend the rest of your life with? In

the past few weeks, the readings have spoken

about how everyone was wondering if Jesus was

“the One.” Well, of course we want to spend our

eternal life with Him, so YES! He is the ONE!

Prepare yourself to spend the BEST of your life

with him!

Our next meeting is Monday, March 31st at

7:30 PM in the Church. All ages 18 and over

are welcome. Call (516) 993-9672 for prayer

requests or more information.

Reflection & Living Stewardship

The blind man was willing to let Jesus

minister to him and willingly did all Je-

sus asked of him. The Pharisees were

more resistant to His message, seeking to disprove the

miracle. Which am I more like, the man born blind or

the Pharisees?

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish

who are ready to respond whenever and wherever the

Lord speaks and allow it to change their lives!

Lenten Book Reading: Amazing Sale!

I recently ordered some books from the Dynamic Catholic Institute. This is an institute that seeks to

deepen a person’s relationship with Christ and the Church. I thought inviting parishioners to some

spiritual reading this Lent would be an excellent way to help us enter into the spirit of this season. Dy-

namic Catholic seeks to publish very readable books at a very low price to help evangelize people in

the Catholic faith.

The books were inexpensive as they cost the parish $3.00 apiece. I would encourage you to consider

buying any one of these books. If you can pay $3.00, that would be great, but any donation would be

welcome. I only make one serious request: PLEASE MAKE A SERIOUS EFFORT TO READ

THE BOOK BY EASTER. All of us have lots of books gathering dust in our homes. These books

are to be read. They will be available after Mass in the gathering area THIS WEEKEND, March 29th

and 30th.

After you read one of the books, I would love it if you gave me a short review that I would be happy

to put in the bulletin. After you’re done, please pass them on to another person.

Here are the titles:

Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly. Father Ron Reider writes about it, An extraordinary

book! I have been a priest 50 years and I do not know a book that has revitalized the faith of more

people.

The Four Signs of A Dynamic Catholic by Matthew Kelly. What four things did Mother Teresa,

Francis of Assisi, John Paul II, Therese of Lisieux and Ignatius of Loyola have in common? They all

practiced the four signs.

Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody by Allen Hunt. 11 Stories of Real People who discovered

the power of Grace for forgiveness in their lives.

Jesus Shock by Peter Kreeft. Who is Jesus to you? Get ready to discover Jesus like you have never

known him.

The Real Story by Edward Sri and Curtis Martin. Reading this book helps us to understand the epic

saga of God’s love for us that is revealed in the Bible.

A Father Who Keeps His Promises by Scott Hahn. Scott Hahn is one of the most popular Catholic

writers of today. A former Protestant minister, he had found in Catholicism the most profound way of

life.

Long Island/Metro Retrouvaille

A lifeline for married couples

Another marriage saving Retrouvaille weekend will be offered May 30th - June1, 2014.

Please spread the word and help your parish families stay together! Most couples across the nation who have attended a Retrouvaille weekend tell us they learned about this program from their weekly parish bulletin. Many are afraid to ask their pastor or parish priest for help with their marriages. Others are just hoping time will help to make things better. They tell us that seeing the program announced repeatedly in their Sun-day bulletin gave them the courage to pick up the phone and make the call. Most say that Retrouvaille was the lifeline that helped save their marriage and their family.

You Can Help Heal Your Marriage Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? Retrouvaille helps couples through difficult times in their marriages. This program has helped thousands of couples world-wide experiencing ALL TYPES of marital difficulties. For confidential information about the Retrouvaille program, or to regis-ter for the upcoming weekend that begins on Friday, May 30th, 2014 at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington. Please call 1-800-470-2230 and you will be connected directly and confi-dentially to a couple from Long Island/Metro Retrouvaille who can help.

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE

LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR The Little Sisters of the Poor is a Roman Catholic religious institute for women. It was founded in the 19th century by Saint Jeanne Jugan near Rennes, France. Saint Jeanne Jugan felt the need to care for the many impoverished elderly who lined the streets of French towns and cities. This led her to welcome an elderly lady into her home and the work of the LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR began. Today, the Little Sisters of the Poor serve in 31 countries around the world (including homes in Turkey, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Penang, New Zealand and the U.S.) continuing in their original purpose of caring for the elderly. In addition to the Sisters Apostolate, a semi-contemplative emphasis is also maintained within the institute. Professed sisters therefore take a new religious name usually a saint or someone associated with the institute and wear a full religious habit consisting of a black dress and scapular, full grey veil and a white headband which covers the hair of the Sister. They have grown from one woman helping one woman to one of the most successful religious organizations in the world. The Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor numbers 2,710 Sisters plus 2,065 members of the Association Jeanne Jugan (lay associates) who operate over 200 home on 5 continents, serving over 13,200 residents. There are 30 homes in the US where the elderly and dying are cared for with dignity. Pope Francis recently said, "Let us imagine if there were no nuns in hospitals, no nuns in missions, no nuns in schools. Imagine a Church without nuns! It is unimaginable!" From The Little Sisters of the Poor, two nuns arrived in Boston in 1870. They first established a home for the poor in Roxbury and now operate a large ELDERLY CARE FACILITY in Somerville. This small order has achieved global notoriety because it has sued the government in federal court claiming that applying the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) Con-traceptive Coverage Mandate is in violation of the religious freedom provisions of the First Amendment as well as other federal laws protecting them from government interference with their practice of religion. Un-der the Mandate, failure to assist directly or indirectly, in providing their employees with contraception drugs can lead to enormous fines. The Church believes life begins at fertilization and the formation of the em-bryo. While it may take 2-6 days for the embryo to attach to the lining of the uterine wall, it is a sin to take any steps to interfere with that "implementation." Plan B required by the Mandate - the so-called “morning after” drug, along with the "ella" drug (about one week) will in a majority of cases, stop "implantation." For the nuns, that is a SIN. If the nuns object to providing coverage, they need not provide. However, they must fill out and sign a cer-tificate stating they have an objection based on religious grounds and send it to their group plan. Although the law states that the plan cannot refuse to provide coverage (at no cost to the nuns) government lawyers now concede that, FOR THE MOMENT, the type of group plans like charities such as the nuns not comply with the Mandate either. On the form is an explicit acknowledgment of the Mandate and a signature would compel the group plan to provide the drugs. The government is intent on finding a way to defeat the pre-sent group plan exemption. The nuns, as well as hundreds of other religious groups, REFUSE TO SIGN because of their beliefs. Such conduct will exhibit illicit complicity in a moral wrong and amount to a "scandal" - a dreaded sin. Even the government doesn't challenge their beliefs. This order of nuns will never sign the form. If they lose their court case, they will go out of business in this country. On January 24, 2014 the Justices of the Supreme Court felt that resolve and stopped the Federal government until FURTHR NOTICE. Pope Francis will soon learn that this Religious Order and thousands of others may be forced to close because of the Contraceptive Drug Mandates contained in Affordable Care Act. PRESIDENT OBAMA WILL NO DOUBT, DISCUS THIS DURING HIS MEETING WITH POPE FRANCIS ON MARCH 27TH AT THE VATICAN. Source: Thomas E. Dwyer, Feb. 24th 2014 Boston Globe. Little Sisters of the Poor provided

history.

St. Martin of Tours Summer Bible Camp

Last summer we had 25 children. The morning program was very well

received by both the children and parents. We offered arts and

crafts, games, videos, prayer, Bible time and snacks. A Bible camp

tee shirt was also given to the children, and the kids really seemed

to enjoy the time spent with one another.

This year the staff has decided to have morning and afternoon sessions geared to-

ward the children’s ages, since the age spread between 5 - 12 year olds was too

great. If you are interested, please fill in the form below. Be sure to indicate the

age of each child. We would appreciate that all forms be returned to the Parish

Rectory Office no later than Friday, May 30th.

Hope to have another great week this summer!

Monday, August 11 to Friday, August 15 Morning Session: 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. For children 5 years to age 8 years

Praying the Psalms Monday to Friday during Lent, at 8:30 a.m., you are invited to pray the Morning Prayer of the Church in church. The Morning Prayer, also called the Divine Office, consists of psalms, a scripture reading, and prayers. Throughout the universal church, this prayer is prayed by the clergy, monks, religious and lay people. It is a beautiful way to enter into the beginning of a new day. This prayer takes about ten to twelve minutes.

Gospel Sharing Each Saturday morning of Lent, after the 9:00 a.m. Mass, you are invited to come to St. Alphonsus Hall for a period of reflection on the upcoming Sunday Gospel. The Gospel is read and those present listen carefully to the Word of God and reflect on what it means to them. It is not a scripture class, rather it is a prayerful time to apply the Gospel to our own lives. This time of faith sharing is about 30-45 minutes in length. The Gospels of Lent are considered particularly meaningful in the Church, and this sharing is an excellent way to enter into the Scripture.

Spiritual Book Club This Lent, the Spiritual Book Club will be reading The Holy Longing: the Search for Christian Spirituality, by Father Ronald Rolheiser, O.M.I. On Friday evening, April 11th, at 7:30 p.m. in St. Alphonsus Hall, there will be a meeting to discuss the book. All are welcome to read the book this Lent and to attend the discussion. The Holy Longing, first published in 1999, is considered a modern spiritual classic. It is a book that seeks to guide us in understanding what it means to live a Christian life.

The Obligation of Abstinence

(refraining from eating meat)

begins at the age of 14. The

Law of Fasting (limiting one-

self to one full meal and two

lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 19

to 59. No one should consider this obligation

lightly.

Those individuals who have a medical condition

in which fasting or abstaining may be considered

harmful are not obliged to fast or abstain, but

should perform some other act of penance or

charity.

THE ANNUAL SOUP SUPPER

Our soups are far better than any restaurant! What a way to enter into the fasting of Lent: eating for-

ty different types of soup. We all have to suffer for the kingdom. The parish Lenten soup night is a

wonderful gathering of parishioners sharing in the gifts and talents of one another. We also raise

money for the poor of our neighborhood and make sure all the leftovers go to those in need. I did try

to hijack some to the rectory but I was stopped. Thanks to all who made the soup, to all who attend-

ed, and to Pat Ricci and her team for organizing one of our annual parish special events.

Liturgically speaking…

The Liturgy Committee sends a big "Thank You!" to Pat Ricci who organizes the annual Soup Supper every year. To all the volunteers who set up, made soup, and cleaned up, another tremendous "Thank You!" To all the parishioners and their friends who tasted more than 40 crocks of soup made by pa-rishioners of all ages and backgrounds...thank you for sharing. The free will donations amounted to $400 to be shared by St. Vincent de Paul Society and our own Outreach Program.

The message of the night was a prayer for all who do not have enough to eat and gratitude to all who made enough soup to be delivered to the homebound and the Outreach Program. St. Martin of Tours once again proves its giving nature. How blessed we are to have such a wonderful church com-munity and how much that was evident in the ways that everyone worked together.

Help, as a word, was barely said before someone was helping. Lent is about doing good deeds and

all hands that reached out certainly were the hands of Jesus Christ working to spread the Good News. God bless all of you!

The following article was written by Father Robert Barron. The website that Father Barron ap-pears on is called Word on Fire and it is a very inspiring spiritual site. Father Barron was the man re-sponsible for the 10 part video series, Catholicism, that has been so well-received by many people, in-cluding some of our own parishioners. I found this little article an excellent summary of a question that is often asked: “Why did Jesus have to die on the cross?” I know that some people are troubled by this question because it can sometimes seem, if misunderstood, that God the Father was vengeful and demanded the blood of his Son to atone for the sins of the world, in particular the sin of Adam and Eve. I think Father Barron moves the ques-tion of the death of Christ to one of witnessing the great love that God has for his people. www.wordonfire.org -- Father Pat

Why Did Christ Have to Suffer on the Cross?

In the wake of Mel Gibson's movie, "The Passion of the Christ", and now more recently Mark Burnett's film, "Son of God", a lot of people have wondered, why was it necessary for Jesus to die on a cross? Although viewers of both films admired Jesus' courage in suffering through his brutal execution, they still wondered, did God want that? Did God demand that awful, bloody sacrifice? Han Urs von Balthasar said that what you see on the Cross is the greatest act of love, because the Fa-

ther, out of love, sent the Son all the way into our human condition-but then, even more, he sent him into God-forsakenness. Jesus went to sinners, the sick, the margin-alized, but then even further than that. In the most dramatic way possible, Jesus ventured into what frightens us the most: death. As St. Paul says, "He accepted death, even death on a cross," which for some-one of that time, and maybe of any time, was the most brutal way to be killed. So the Father sent the Son all the way out into the furthest limits of God-forsakenness, but why? To usher into those places the divine light. Is death a place

that God is not? No, because God is present there in Jesus. Is suffering a place that God is not? No, be-cause the Son entered into suffering. Is sin a place where God is not? No, because God became sin on the Cross, says Paul. Through Jesus, the divine light journeys into our worst darkness. His aim is to divinize us, to allow us to "share his divine nature" in St. Peter's words, even in those dark places and conditions. Sin is a turning away from the divine life, and death is a fearful place that seems alien to God. But Jesus invades all those places, and thereby illumines them. He offers us new life even when we've wandered as far as we possibly can from God. In that sense, the Cross was necessary for our salvation since it allowed the Hound of Heaven to hunt us down, even in the darkest places.
