Walters-Storyk Design Group (WSDG) designs and consults in the fields of architecture, technology, electroacoustics, and advanced audio - visual systems integration. The firm has been a New York State registered corporation since 1989, with USA headquarters located in Highland, New York, and is an extension of the design career of John Storyk, started in 1969. Additional WSDG offices are located in Basel, Switzerland (Europe Office); Buenos Aires, Argentina (Latin America Office); Belo Horizonte, Brazil (Brazil Office) and Miami, Florida (serving southern Florida and the Caribbean). WSDG is the corporate entity of a 40-year career, starting with John Storyk's first studio design for Jimi Hendrix in 1969. WSDG is the partnership of Beth Walters and John Storyk, and now includes associates and design professionals in all of the offices, numbering over 50 people.WSDG has designed studios for: Alicia Keys, Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion, Daddy Yankee, Def-Jam Records, ESPN, Jay-Z, Jazz at Lincoln Center, MTV Latin America and many others.Key personnel hold college and university degrees in Architecture, Acoustics, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Management. John Storyk, registered architect and acoustician, is a founding partner of WSDG. He has provided facility planning, acoustical and systems design services for the professional audio – video production and performance community since the 1969 completion of Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios in New York City. John received his architectural studies from Princeton and Columbia Universities. As an independent designer, engineer and principal of WSDG, he has been responsible for over 3000 world-class audio video production facilities, including studios, radio stations, video suites, entertainment clubs, and theaters. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Audio Engineering Society (AES), and Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and a frequent contributor to AES convention papers and professional industry periodicals. John is a frequent lecturer at schools throughout the nation and has established courses in acoustics at Full Sail (Orlando), Ex’Pression Center for the Media Arts (San Francisco), while maintaining adjunct professor status in Acoustics and Studio Design at Berklee College of Music (Boston) and Stevens Institute (New Jersey).
Beth Walters-Storyk is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (New York) with two degrees, A.A.S. in Textile Design and a B.F.A. in Product Design. Her construction experience comes with having been a senior installation designer for the Gallery's exhibition and installation staff at the Fashion Institute for over 10 years. From 1982-1988, Beth also was the display and merchandising director for such noted home furnishing fabric firms as Boris Kroll Fabrics, Greff Fabrics and Design Tex Fabrics. Beth is a founding partner and principal of Walters-Storyk Design Group and leads the interior design services division.

SERGIO MOLHOPrincipal / Director of International Relations
Sergio Molho is a founding partner of WSDG Latin America. He provides the technical, acoustical and architectural supervision as well as project management for all WSDG Latin America projects. Sergio has worked in the audio and video industry since 1982, beginning as an engineer, composer and producer for international productions for recording labels such as Sony and Warner. As an accomplished keyboard player and vocalist, he was the leader of CASH, a successful funk band that had its fame in Argentina in the 1980's. He is a member of the Argentinean Acoustic Chamber (AAC) and Audio Engineering Society (AES) as well as other professional organizations. He is a frequent contributor to technical workshops expanding the knowledge and education of acoustics and electro acoustics in their relationship to architecture. iN 2005, Sergio became the CEO and principal of WSDG Brazil and in 2007 he opened the WSDG Mexico Office, and in 2009 the WSDG Miami office. As the Director of WSDG´s International Relations, he contributes to the promotion and adquisition of new business relations worldwide.

Dirk Noy, M.Sc. Physics, has a Diploma in Experimental Solid State Physics from the University of Basel, Switzerland and graduated from Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts, Orlando, USA, where he was one of John Storyk's students. After joining WSDG in early 1997 Dirk now heads the WSDG Europe office in Basel, Switzerland. Dirk has extensive experience in applied mathematics, acoustical measurement and calculation techniques, audio engineering, systems design and all facets of Information Technologies. His language abilities include German, Dutch, French and English. As a publishing member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the Swiss Acoustical Society (SGA) he is a frequent lecturer at trade conventions, recording colleges, as well as architectural education institutions.
Silvia has been involved in the video industry since 1987 as an independent film maker in Lima. Her degree in Fine Arts comes from the University of Peru in Lima and has continued with a degree in Anthropology from the University of Buenos Aires. As a producer, Silvia has developed several cinematographic projects, documentaries, commercials and corporate marketing worldwide. Her areas of expertise include the development of corporate images with the wide use of digital technological combined with traditional film and video. In 1998, together with AVH Inc. in Argentina, she was responsible for the making of the first DVD format in South America. She is integral part of the design, communication, and marketing divisions for WSDG, while acting as co-founder and partner of WSDG-Latin.

Renato Cipriano graduated as a Civil Engineer from the University of FUMEC in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 1994 and is also a graduate from both The Recording Workshop, Ohio (1992) and Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts, Orlando, USA (1999 - also one of John’s students). In early 2000, Renato opened the WSDG Brazil office in Brazil and is responsible for the acoustical and architectural supervision on all projects in Brazil. Additionally, Renato has led the design efforts of many of our international projects contributing to creative acoustic interiors and integrated lighting design. As an audio engineer he has worked on various projects including the most recent album of the most popular rock band in Brazil – Skank. Renato also teaches Basic Acoustics in the top audio school in the country, IAV in São Paulo. In 2004 Renato received two Grammy nominations and won the Latin Grammy for "Best Brazilian Rock Album".

Joshua Morris graduated from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte with two Degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and a Bachelor of Architecture. A love of music has led him to seek a combination of architecture and acoustics, beginning with his thesis on acoustics. Joshua joined the WSDG team in January of 2005, moving from North Carolina to New York, and quickly settled into a key role as a project manager, designer and now partner. Since then he has managed dozens of projects from China to the United States to Germany, and continues to add more skills to his design vocabulary each day, while refining his already well developed practice as a luthier.systems design and all facets of Information Technologies. As a publishing member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the Swiss Acoustical Society (SGA) he is a frequent lecturer at trade conventions, recording colleges, as well as architectural education institutions.4

Thomas Wenger studied IT and electronics at the Institute for Software Engineering, Bern with additional studies in Audio Recording and Room Acoustics in East Croyden, England. After several years in the IT world with major project management development he worked with J+C Intersonic AG for 5 years and became a Senior Project Manager. Mastering the synthesis of the technical aspects of acoustics, broadcast and audio video systems has made him an invaluable member in numerous WSDG projects, including GTRK Kultura (Moscow), HKB Music University Switzerland, and several government related projects for Swiss Television and Radio. He is responsible for the technical planning and integration of all media production facilities, in addition to complex project supervision. As a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the Swiss Acoustical Society (SGA), he is frequent lecturer at HKB (Hochschule der Künste, Bern).

Gabriel Hauser graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, in 2000. Analog and digital signal processing and acoustics were his primary focus. His Thesis was titled "Reduction of Nonlinear Distortion of Loudspeakers employing Volterra Filters" (at Studer Professional AG, Switzerland). After joining the WSDG NY office, Gabriel returned to Switzerland to become a founding partner at WSDG Europe. His specialties include Acoustical Simulation and Measurement, complex Acoustical Analysis and Methodology as well as Architectural Acoustics. During his studies Gabriel was a founding member of Abbaxx Soundsystems Ltd., whose principal field of work is sound reinforcement and loudspeaker technology. While with Abbaxx, he designed and developed sound systems for concert use, churches and installations. He writes articles for audio magazines and continues to be a performing musician.
HOWARD SCHWARTZStrategic Development Director
Howard Schwartz has recently joined WSDG after a long, successful career as the Founder and CEO of Howard Schwartz Recording in New York City. Howard is one of the leaders in the professional audio production industry. Born in Buffalo, New York, he attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, is a Veteran of the US Army during the Vietnam Era (A Radio DJ for The US Army AFN in Berlin, Frankfort and Munich in the 60’s), and a music mixer in Hollywood during the late 60’s and early 70’s. He had a short stint back in Radio at The CHUM Group in Toronto and then to New York in 1972 where he became a mixer in the TV and Advertising Studio business. Howard Schwartz has relationships in every facet of the motion picture, television, commercial, music, Internet, digital, design and construction worlds.

Ilan Weinstein, born in Israel, grew up in Argentina and Venezuela, and has lived for the past 12 years in Miami, FL with his wife and 3 children He holds an MBA in Business Administration from University of Miami. He founded and managed operations for the second largest distributor of DIRECTV in the U.S. and oversaw all sales, customer service and information systems functions. Ilan has held many corporate positions in finance, marketing and sales with the Cisneros Group of Companies and has supervised different operations in Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Puerto Rico for over 10 years. Since 2008, Ilan has dedicated his efforts to creating our WSDG office in Miami, dedicated to design and installation in home automation, professional audio and video, and commercial systems integration.

Judy Elliot-Brown has been a professional audio engineer since 1977, with a background in live touring, remote recording, music recording, sound for television, studio maintenance and systems design. She has been responsible for the systems infrastructure design and installation of over 100 projects worldwide. Projects she has worked on include world-class audio recording studios, media/broadcast production studios, educational facilities and multi-use performance spaces. Judy is a full-time systems design engineer and project manager, and has collaborated on WSDG projects for over 25 years. She is a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). Additionally, she has worked on several Grammy nominated albums and TV shows.
Michael Chollet’s fi rst activities in the professional audio field were thedevelopment of loudspeaker systems and electronics. After graduationfrom high school with a focus on engineering, he started self education inthe fi elds of acoustical measurements, DSP programming, computer andnetwork technology. He augmented this know how foundation with advancedtraining courses in acoustics and environmental noise protection. Michaelgathered fi rst hand experience in system design and A/V installationswith Abbaxx Ltd., a company he co-founded when still at college.At WSDG Michael has overseen the management of several studio constructionprojects and large scale installations.

David Kotch graduated with honors from Lehigh University in 2004 as an architect, andjoined WSDG 2006 combining his talents and passion for music, architecture, physics, and systems design. David spent 1998-2006 working in the live sound industry, specifically Broadway Theater, designing and optimizing sound systems. David’s experience and expertise include noise isolation control, acoustical measurement, systems optimization, and computer aided acoustical modeling. David is a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and Acoustical Society of America (ASA), and has presented multiple times at the AES national conference in addition to guest lecturing at universities. He still mixes audio for large special live broadcast events such as the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and NFL Games. When David is not working, he spends his time climbing big objectives, ranging from Yosemite to Alaska to Patagonia.

The fi rst and last person to call with any production, billing or scheduling issue,CFO Nancy Flannery has spent the past sixteen years honing her skills as theconsummate WSDG client liaison. A multi-task whiz, Nancy assists clients invirtually every phase of their projects. Critical to all successful acoustic designs is the thorough analysis of external noise, vibration sources (traffic, trains, aircraft, etc.), and environmental HVAC distribution systems. WSDG provides acoustical measurement, analysis and design services to assure optimal acoustical isolation of existing or new construction, always with an eye towards economy of design and awareness of applicable building techniques for each project.

The channels are delivered from the state-of-the-art UPC Digital Media Centre television broadcast facility in Amsterdam, for analogue or digital re-transmission. These services are available from the Telstar 12 satellite, providing total pan-European coverage. flugHafenkoPf, ZuricH airPort - Zurich, SwitzerlandThe project “Flughafenkopf” is part of the 5th expansion of the Zurich Airport. The expansion consists of both the Airside Center (A500) - a spacious service area with restaurants, shops, and lounges between the existing terminals and A and B fingerdocks, and the Railway Terminal (C500) / Shopping Mall. WSDG’s project scope was comprised of the following: Definition of project requirements, including speech intelligibility, sound pressure levels, frequency responses, and coverage in line with the appropriate national and international standards, including IEC 60849; the specification of electroacoustical components (e.g. loudspeakers), including radiation patterns, power, headroom etc., and definition of installation parameters for these components; supervision of driver electronics to the electroacoustical system (Digital Signal Processing “DSP”), amplification, existing paging systems etc., close collaboration with the architectural and engineering teams, modifications and fine-tuning of the electroacoustical design, electroacoustical design and optimization with assistance of computer simulations and other means of calculation.

atlas - Boulder, Colorado, USAThe $31 million ATLAS building (Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society) is a unique facility designed to focus on the convergence of technology, media and the arts. ATLAS includes a state-of-the-art Black Box performance space, a modern broadcast production studio, a large video wall in the building’s lobby, a film screening room, a technologically enhanced auditorium, videoconferencing rooms and four computer classrooms.
WSDG provided the noise criteria and room designs for the most acoustically sensitive areas in the building. These were the Black Box performance space, the film screening room, the video production control rooms and the large technology auditorium. In addition, the WSDG systems division worked closely with the Atlas and Colorado University staff to develop systems solutions that would incorporate the required flexibility and be user friendly within the strict budget guidelines of the project.
The 75-seat film screening room is among the best in the nation and the Black Box theater is on the cutting edge of technologically enhanced performance spaces located on a university campus anywhere in the nation. This versatile, high tech theater is designed to provide display technology for creative interactive video, interdisciplinary performances that combine musicians, dancers, visual artists and technology. Other types of performances include visiting artist web and visual performances, and student produced video productions. Large video display screens are also mounted on the buildings exterior east and north sides, and the distinctive tower on the roof is lit at various times throughout the year with colors signifying activities happening on campus or across the nation.

This 100 year-old building was remodeled and redesigned by world renowned architect Philippe Starck. This 30,000 square meter first class hotel has been acoustically treated so that when someone is playing in the Cabaret and night club, another person can sleep just a few rooms away. WSDG provided acoustic design and consulting services for the improvement of the acoustic performance in these critical spaces.

imax - Buenos Aires, ArgentinaImax, through “Center Norte” (a mall), installed the first IMAX 3D theater in Latin America, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The new theater showcases the largest commercial screen in history (26 x 20 meters) while seating over 400 people and housing a 14000 watt sound system. WSDG incorporated all of the world standard IMAX requirements in to its design while maintaining an NC 25 rating.
The facility is placed 25 meters from the main access highway to Buenos Aires city, and behind the air route of the domestic airport. To manage the required isolation, WSDG used a multiple decoupled layer system in the walls, and a complex system of ceilings hanging by springs. To solve the interior acoustic challenges and meet the IMAX required reverberation time, different types of absorbing panels with different thicknesses and different densities of phono absorbent material were used.

JaZZ at lincoln center - New York, New York, USAJazz at Lincoln Center opened in the fall of 2004. This 100,000 square foot facility houses performance venues, an educational wing and recording/post production facilities.
The Frederick P. Rose Hall project consists of a 1200 seat concert hall with movable seating towers. The hall can be set up for dance and opera and then can be reconfigured to provide an intimate jazz setting by surrounding the musicians with the audience seated on three levels.
The Allen Room is a 300 - 600 seat performance space. There are tiered platforms ascending from the stage level to a dance floor with movable tables and chairs, allowing the audience to interact with the musicians who play against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. The Irene Diamond Education Center features 3,500 square feet and contains two state-of-the-art education/ rehearsal studios.
WSDG, as partners in the Sound of Jazz Consulting Group, worked closely with the architects and Wynton Marsalis to acoustically design the education, rehearsal and recording spaces. The systems integration design for all performance, educational and listening spaces within this facility are linked together for recording and playback. This facility is the world’s first performing arts center designed specifically for the performance and recording of jazz.

This inviting hotel is a pinnacle of luxury, offering its guests embellished interiors, sumptuous design, lively entertainment, cutting edge meeting facilities, all overlooking the Beijing Olympic Park. The hotel is one of the city´s most dynamic centres for business, leisure and global exchange.WSDG was in charge of the acoustic design, the audio/video and multimedia systems integration, and the theatre´s lighting and technology. These comprehensive, high tech facilities make spectacular events and meetings, which can accommodate a wide range of events, include a ballroom, two function rooms, and two floors of private meeting rooms.

Jungle city stuDios - New York, New YorkStudio founder/engineer Ann Mincieli has invested over ten years of experience as Alicia Keys' engineer/album coordinator/studio director, and works with artists ranging from Coldplay to Usher and Jay-Z. Miss Mincieli has created Manhattan’s first true destination studio. The challenge of creating the signature 11th floor live studio/control room directly above the two 10th floor production suites in a newly constructed lightweight, concrete building presented complex isolation challenges. To maximize the impact of the studios’ expansive North and South picture windows, WSDG floated the custom speakers in an outsized glass speaker baffle. This created a kind of transparent “wall of sound” between the live and control rooms, which provides artists and engineers with the creative advantage of full visual connectivity. In addition, our isolation details allowed us to install the expansive window wall to expose an impressive view of the Manhattan skyline and the new Highline Park, while maintaining strict isolation requirements for studio use. Test results show an NC rating of 15, which is very low for a glass wall application.

le Poisson rouge - New York, New YorkLe Poisson Rouge (LPR) was built in 2008 at the site of the historic Village Gate venue in Greenwich Village in NYC. The club features a flexible and intimate performance space with a capacity of 800 people (250 seated) as well as a 23' diameter hardwood sprung dance floor. The stage itself is located in the corner of the performance space and measures 28' x 21' with options for increasing or decreasing the overall footprint. The 16' diameter trundled round stage can be used in the center of the space as needed, for example to hold LPR's 9' concert grand piano.

sWiss Parliament - Bern, SwitzerlandThe Federal Palace in Bern is the building in which the Federal Assembly of Switzerland (federal parliament) and the Swiss Federal Council (executive) are housed. The Federal Palace has been designed by the architect Hans Wilhelm Auer and was constructed out of sandstone from 1894 to 1902. From 2006 to 2008 – after over 100 years of service – the first major renovation took place with the goal to integrate modern technology within a faithful restoration of the original building structure.

st. gallen train station - St. Gallen, SwitzerlandThe St. Gallen Train Station hall is an architectural icon constructed in an impressive steel-glass structure that dates back to 1915. The visitor information infrastructure, main lighting, signage and audio systems, had been upgraded intermittently since its original opening, more than 30 years ago, but the audio systems were in need of a substantial upgrade to 21st century standards. The goal was to replace all the existing individual technology components with one unified system, consisting of lighting, signage and audio needs integrated into the same structure. WSDG provided all acoustical consulting, including advanced audio simulations, working with the project architects to design and specify this new electroacoustic system. The installation provides travelers with scheduling information, track changes, updates and other vital announcements, with high quality speech intelligibility

maracanã staDium - Rio de Janeiro, BrazilThe temple of Soccer officially called Estádio Jornalista Mario Filho but popularly known as Maracanã, is the biggest soccer stadium in Brazil. Inaugurated in 1950 for FIFA’s World Cup, it has been stage for great moments in Brazilian and international soccer such as Pelé’s thousandth goal. The stadium will be hosting the opening and closing of the 2016 Olympics and in FIFA’s World Cup in 2014 it will be hosting the final match. WSDG has designed the audio and video systems for the entire stadium. The full renovation is expected to be completed in 2013 for the Confederations Cup, which happens one year before the World Cup.

esPn - Bristol, ConnecticutAs part of a world-class design team that includes HLW architects (NYC), WSDG has provided all acoustical consulting for a landmark expansion of ESPN’s campus outside Bristol, Connecticut. The new Digital Center 2, currently under construction and slated for a late 2012 / early 2013 opening, will house four fully-appointed shooting stages, five audio/video production suites, edit rooms, a 58 station Highlight Screening Room along with office facilities and conference rooms and support spaces.

noVartis - Basel, SwitzerlandThe keystone of the Novartis Campus in Basel, Switzerland is an all-glass building designed by Frank O. Gehry. The building includes an interactive computer learning facility and a divisible master auditorium. As a full auditorium it seats 632, while with the division wall in place it is split into an upper auditorium (with 298 seats) and a lower auditorium (with 171 seats). The upper and lower areas can be used simultaneously and independently.
