EDITOR’S NOTE

Have you ever experienced talking to someone from Dallas and when you ask them where they live inevitably they respond “North Dallas.” In a city with so many people I always thought man that is hard to fathom how could all those folks be from North Dallas?. Seems like the same is now happening right here in the Heights. I met a fella the other day who asked me to come to his office and when I ask for his address I swear he was closer to University Of Houston than any gazebo on Heights Blvd! In the end I guess we should all be flattered that everyone wants to be here. By all accounts another four thousand

families will be moving into the immediate area in the next twelve months. As I see it this is mostly positive, I mean we survived the opening of a Walmart and what could be worse than that?

We thought producing an annual Newcomers Guide might help ingratiate our new neighbors into the community. Hopefully whether you are new to the area or have been here awhile you are inclined to get out and enjoy our campaign of “The 100 Greatest Things” on page 30 .” To date we have had 10 weekly winners all who pocketed $100.00 in cash and prizes. To get started just like us on Facebook at OurBlok Heights and you will be entered every week for the next 9 months.

When I thought about Amazon flying drones all over the area I knew we had to do something. So we “Opened a New Mall this week in The Heights” and did not cut down a single tree or increase traffic one iota! Now we have one more reason to be proud of living in The Heights. Shoptheblok.com is an on line store with your favorite local merchants. Spend $50.00 or more and we can deliver your purchases in four hours! I hope the next time you need a last minute gift item you will wow the recipient. Just purchase from your favorite area stores on shoptheblok.com and click the box for the optional four hour delivery. Our driver clad in Tuxedo will hand deliver your gift or purchase in sixteen zip codes, basically anywhere inside the Beltway.

Lastly we hope you enjoy the article on philanthropy in The Heights. There are so many people who give so freely of their time and energy. Every once in a while we may not see eye to eye on every issue but the light at the end of the tunnel is not a train!

Navigating 19th or A Walk on the Retro Side By Angela Pennington

A stroll down Heights’ 19th street is more than just a block or two—it can take you to another time altogether.

Sometimes an escape is good for the soul. And while a trip to Hilton Head would sure do the trick, a trip down memory lane just might suffice. Lucky for you, 19th street in the Heights lets you time travel on foot in just a block or two.

First on the agenda—fueling up for your day of retro shopping. And unless your heart is set on funky tacos with a long weekend wait—and Torchy’s Trailer Park taco is definitely worth it—head next door to the newly opened Heights General Store. Go light with their Cast Iron Oatmeal and fresh picked berries, or jump right into the Big Nasty Biscuit, a concoction of fried chicken, cheddar and sausage gravy. Wash it down with a hand crafted Bloody Mary—you’ll thank us for it later.

Up next—some new-to-you apparel from decades past at Retropolis, Style Cycle or Replay on 19th. They each carry vintage clothing, accessories and shoes from the 1920s to the 1980s, so whether you’re in search of a zoot suit, a super-fly get-up or a dress to complete your Audrey Hepburn ensemble, these hot spots have you covered.

Antique stores cn scream “old junk”—but not those along this strip. Grace Hart, Chippendale Eastlake, Gen’s and Mercader Antiques are treasure troves of classic finds, from fabulous costume jewelry to display-worthy typewriters and birdcages. Rummage through cases of your favorite childhood comic books or grab that retro-chic canister set like your grandmother used to have.

Whether you’re in need of a traditional ‘do or it’s time for upkeep on your purple tips, pop into Venus Hair. A whimsical mix of wild and wonderful, Venus shares both her coveted scissor skills and her love for the bizarre, as evident in her art car hearse and a disturbingly large collection of doll heads. Walk ins are welcome, but with a reputation like hers, do yourself a favor and call ahead. We did mention the doll heads, didn’t we?

And just when you think you’ve reached the end of retro-row, you’ll find Vinal Edge Records, where you can score both vintage and new albums of your favorite bands in nearly every genre. Before you check out, take your pick of used turntables—try a 1980s Technics—or buy a new “Pro-Ject” to spin that rare copy of The Wall. Because nothing says “nostalgia” like 1970s British rock opera.

Whether you are new to the area or just moving in many people do not know where to start when it comes to local agencies. We thought we would tap into two local experts, Anne E. Kennedy & Lauren Haggar, attorneys in the Law Office of Anne E. Kennedy, located at 539 Heights Boulevard. These two spend a lot of time at the courthouses, and were more than willing to share some practical information with us.

Local Law Enforcement

In the Greater Heights area, there is a Houston Police Department (HPD) station at 1127 N. Shepherd. This is a “storefront” location, which handles non-emergency matters. The officers there are happy to be of assistance and are very knowledgeable. The storefront is located in a commercial shopping center on 11th street and Shepherd, across from Kroger and near the Ross store. The telephone number for the station is 713.803.1151. The station is open Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm.

The closest 24 hour police station is downtown, 61 Riesner. The downtown station handles both

non-emergency and emergencies. The telephone number is 713.247.4400. Of course, there is 911 for an emergency.

The Harris County Constable also has 2 precincts and several neighborhood patrols. Precinct 1 is located downtown at 1302 Preston on the 3rd Floor. The telephone number is 713-755-5200. There is also an annex at 7300 North Shepherd, and the telephone number is 713-697-3600. Precinct 6 is located at 333 Lockwood Dr. The telephone number is 713.923.9156.

The neighborhood patrols are provided through your local neighborhood Heights Association for a small fee that averages between $15 to $30 per month. Subscribers benefit from a faster police response time and from daily vehicle patrols throughout the neighborhood. Each neighborhood patrol logs 40 hours per week of patrol time. Please contact your local neighborhood Heights association for more information about how to subscribe and pay dues.Court Houses

Beyond the law enforcement, it is important for residents to

be aware of the Harris County courts and clerks’ offices. The Harris County Clerk and the Harris County District Clerk are located in the Civil Courthouse located at 201 Caroline Street in Downtown. Marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, and property records can be obtained on the 3rd floor. The criminal courthouse is located at 1201 Franklin Street. In this building, the clerk’s office is located on the 3rd floor. Here, you can obtain your criminal records or get a clearance letter, which states that you do not have a criminal history.

In front and around the Civil Court building the Family, Criminal, and Juvenile Court Buildings can be found, all of which surround the Jury Plaza located in the center. Before leaving for any court settings always review the official Harris County web page of the court to insure you arrive at the correct destination. Also, please know that all court buildings require a security check in, which should be accounted for in estimating your arrival time.

We live in one of the nation’s most charitable cities. The Heights is home to many individuals who volunteer and donate an incredible amount of their resources to keep our area vibrant and growing. Community volunteers, business owners and employees of generous companies all team-up to get things done in The Greater Heights.

I am sure we all know neighbors, friends and family who embody the spirit of giving in the area. There are so many who give so much we thought we would visit with three people from the area. Our hope is that their story will inspire all of us to dig deeper to see what gifts we may bring to the community to continue to make this a great place to call home.

Our cover photo includes Ashton Martini a Real Estate agent with Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty, Allison Cuvillier owner of Style Cycle and Carson Schultz from Ecclesia Houston a church off of Dart Street. We sat down with the three of them to discuss their motivations. Tell us about how and why you choose the charity you did? Ashton: I wanted to get involved with an organization that can change lives in an amazing way. The MS150, which benefits The National MS Society, connects over 13,000 riders and thousands of volunteers. To see that

many people committed to one cause and working towards the same goal is truly an unbelievable experience. The National MS Society says it best. “MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn’t.”Carson: Our most prominent relationship as it relates to charitable work outside of the church walls is with a local non-profit called Living Water

International (water.cc). Living Water seeks to provide clean water and resources related to clean water to underdeveloped locations all over the world. Allison: We tried to choose charities that were local, grassroots efforts, causes that our customers and people who donate can identify with.

How many years have you been at it?Ashton: I started Team Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty in 2012, and have been the captain for those 2 years, but I have always had the desire the give back and help people.Carson: The church is in its 13th year and we have been working on water issues for the last

seven years. Allison: It was always in our business plan to support local charities. I hope that our customers appreciate that we are giving back to our community monthly. We started this program in May of 2013.

What is the inspiration behind the charity work? Ashton: I have been very fortunate in my life and career. I feel like it is important for me to give back to my community and to anyone that I can

Height’s IN ACTION

14 OurBlok Spring

Page 17: OurBlok Heights Winter 2014 Newcomers Guide

help. If I can raise awareness and help those with MS, then that means more than any real estate transaction ever could.Carson: Our hope is to be a place where people are invited to serve and love one another and our city. We want to be a place where people can experience the love of Jesus, where they can be real with one another, and find opportunities to live out their faith. The choice to be involved was about providing basic necessities for people. Our desire is to empower the recipients of clean water through relationships with local pastors and churches and to help develop the entire basic infrastructure around what happens once a community actually has water. (ecclesiahouston.org).Allison: We just wanted to give back to the city and help the small charities around town. We felt like we could make a difference if we provided the overhead and then gives all the charities access to a physical location. The average person is more than willing to give and we felt like we could really make a difference. So far it is working.

How much have you raised so far?Ashton: Last year we raised $ 24,000.00 and our team goal is $100,000 for 2014. To date we have

over 50 team members.Carson: One of the primary impacts this relationship has is through a movement known as Advent Conspiracy (adventconspiracy.org). This year during the Christmas season (a season in North American culture that often encourages consumerism and the giving of elaborate gifts); we were able to raise over $500,000 to participate in water-well drilling projects all across the world.Allison: In the first nine months we have raised over $1,200 for local charities. We hope that as the word gets out about our program and that this number will grow exponentially!

At the end of the day you don’t have to be a billionaire to make a difference! We are not always able to financially support all of the great causes out there. However there are ample opportunities to give back that require little more than a caring heart. A principal at a local public grade school once told me that volunteering to read and mentor one hour a month can make a dramatic difference in a child’s chance at success. Most of us if called on could find that hour, consider this the call. The legacy of giving is about showing your young ones and generations to come how a thoughtful gift of time, talent or money can make a difference.

If you have a favorite story about a generous act by a company or individual

in The Heights please email us at [email protected] for a future story.

It seems as though monthly there are new activities and developments in The Greater Heights that encourage us to all get out and explore. New walking trails, cross fit gyms in every abandoned building, additional bike trails, kayak the bayou or run the loop at Memorial Park there is a phelora of opportunities. Regardless of the activity, in order to explore and enjoy you need to be pain free. There is a company located at Sawyer and Memoria Dr.l that is on a mission to make you feel better. We sat down with the owner Kristina McDaniel to see just what their plan for feeling better entails.

SO JUST WHAT IS EGOSCUE?In a nutshell Egoscue is Muscle Re balancing. Our first goal is to mitigate pain and then correct the postural positioning of the load joints. We look for the root cause of why you are in pain rather than just focusing on the symptoms. We focus on the body as a unit and treat your postural position rather than the condition. The Egoscue Method is a process which involves a series of corrective stretches and gentle exercises designed specifically for each client. The Egoscue Method provides a personal experience using the original blueprint of the body as the guide to bring about a state of muscular balance and internal homeostasis, helping to achieve relief from chronic pain.

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN AROUND?Egoscue has been around since early 1978. Egoscue started in San Diego, by Pete Egoscue. Pete created the Method first to help himself after suffering a debilitating injury while serving as an Infantry Officer for the U.S. Marine Corps.

WHAT MAKES THIS TYPE OF TREATMENT DIFFERENT?Egoscue focuses on the root cause of why you are in

pain. Egoscue is an exercise based movement modality. Exercises are performed by the client putting control of their health back in their hands. The client is instructed in a series of personalized exercises tailored to their specific postural dysfunctions. The exercises emphasize the deeper muscles of the axial skeleton and pelvis as well Hips as the more superficial muscles and are designed to straighten the body first then strengthen the body.

WHAT EXACTLY IS JOINT RE-ALIGNMENT?Joint Alignment is about functional positioning of the 4 four load joints. Shoulders, Hips, Knees and Ankles joints are level and parallel with one another. It's about having a natural S-Curved Spinal Column designed to bear weight in an upright position with the ability to move the body. It's about equal balance, function, with a neutrally aligned pelvic position supporting the gentle S-Curve of the spine. It's about the ability to efficiently bear weight in a evenly distributed balanced position from front to back of the feet. How long does a typical session last?

The complimentary consult is 30 minutes. Your first appointment is is approximately and hour and half, where we take postural photo's, do a gait analysis, as well as a structure positioning analysis. Once we have gathered the data we will then construct a "menu" a series of exercises and gentle stretches designed to address your postural dysfunctions and compensations.Following appointments typically run an hour.

DOES IT REALLY WORK?We have a 95% success rate with our clients who

Page 47: OurBlok Heights Winter 2014 Newcomers Guide

follow the program. Check out the website www.egoscue.com where you will find testimonies from current clients or you can download the free app. egoscue results

WHO IS YOUR MOST FAMOUS CLIENT?Jack Nicklaus said that "Pete Egoscue has totally changed my life. Never have I experienced such complete pain relief as I have following the "Egosuce Method" and you may have heard of Anthony Robbins. He said, "Born from the genius of Pete Egoscue, the simple and effective routines are cutting edge of physical therapy, I am thrilled to recommend it to anyone who's interested in dramatically increasing the quality of their physical health"

WHY IS THIS WORK SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?I am extremely passionate about the Egoscue Method and how it can change lives. I get so much enjoyment watching clients transform and get their lives back. So many people arrive at the clinic in pain and with a lot of fear around their pain. They have been to so many doctors and have tried so many things. We help our clients understand why they are in pain, and help give them a logical approach to getting out of pain. As they go through the Egoscue process their pain dissipates along with the fear they have concerning their pain. As therapist we get to see the transformation of body, mind and soul of our clients and there is no greater joy then to guide them through the process. We love coming to work every day.

With Spring in the air and a burning desire to get out side and enjoy the weather it helps if the body is equally as ready. Chronic pain is a burden on many, sounds like Egoscue has been the solution for many around the country and is now available to all right here in The Greater Heights!

A revolutionary method for STOPPING CHRONIC PAIN

It might be hard to imagine that the best kept secret in Utah could be so similar to The Heights. On a recent visit to Heber Valley I was struck by the similarities in this area of the country and home here in The Heights. The hike and bike trails certainly share different landscapes. While ours are of the urban variety they enjoy countless miles of natural trails absent our concrete. Four seasons arrive in Utah on time and seem to know when to leave. There is little in the way of humidity and traffic is a non-issue. Yet repeatedly during the trip I kept feeling eerily like I was home.

The people of Heber Valley you see are warm and caring and like here in the Heights seem to be very real and simple. There is a feeling of community and people who care about the land and preserving the natural surroundings. They enjoy the outdoors, festivals and visitors. The stores in town seem a bit like 19th street. Meeting people and making new friends is as easy as it gets in Heber Valley. Home values in the area are still affordable

and great restaurants are all within a few miles.

The story of Heber Valley is the ultimate playground especially if you enjoy four seasons. It is a golf and fly-fishing haven as well as a skier’s paradise. A spectacular outdoor adventure land, Heber Valley is home to world-class fly-fishing along the Provo River, abundant with both rainbow and brown trout. The Jordanelle Reservoir is the perfect place for paddle boarding, wake surfing, jet skiing, and kayaking. The area is also known for its alpine hiking and mountain biking along with the best skiing in North America at numerous world-class resorts. Two great places to stay, one that would remind you of the Bed and Breakfast on Heights Blvd. called the Blue Boar Inn & Restaurant is an old-style European chateau nestled in the foothills of Midway, Utah. This place is special and enjoys a Four Star, Four Diamond, Five-Medal Inn. It is a short 20-minute drive from the world class ski resorts and night life of Park City, Utah. The Blue Boar offers a romantic European

getaway, from the Inn’s elegant rooms to fine candle-lit dining and the mountain ambience of the Heber Valley. If you can find a way to stay here by all means do and take in dinner at what I think is the area’s best restaurant.

The Homestead Resort is also a great spot for families. Tucked up against the Wasatch Mountains, The resort has a long history with views as spectacular as the service and amenities. Be sure and dine at Simon’s Restaurant for great steaks and take in breakfast and lunch at Fanny’s Grill. The resort is a playground for both adults and children and yet offers respite if you are just in the mood to relax. Home to a 55 foot limestone rock crater located 55 feet below is a unique sensation. A number of 18-hole championship golf courses are stunning and affordable. For sure take in both the Wasatch Mountain course and The Course at The Homestead. This area of Utah was utilized for a number of events during

the winter Olympics held here in 2002.

There is also the luxury community of “Red Ledges” where Heights Residents would relish a second home. A Jack Nicklaus signature golf course weaves through the most picturesque red rocks, the Jim McLean Golf School for fine tuning your game and Cliff Drysdale Tennis Program for tennis aficionados. There are endless hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails. A burger that can rival Stanton’s, but at the end of the day, the one thing that will stop you in your tracks at Red Ledges is the panoramic view. Breath Taking, Majestic and Awe inspiring.

A mere 15 minutes to historic Main Street in Park City and neighboring Heber Valley , Red Ledges is home to a world of leisure and luxury that is family friendly where you can experience all that Utah offers. Offering bountiful views, tranquil space, recreation and Mother Nature at her finest. Home prices range from $495,000-$2 million while home sites start at $195,000. The value here is really hard to believe.

The golf course is spectacular and course designer Jack Nicklaus planned each hole around its natural surroundings. The course celebrates the unique Western topography, carving through sandstone ledges and cliffs with elevated tees offering stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. In addition to the award-winning 7,653-yard course being named the #1 Best New Private Course in America by GOLF Magazine, and Utah’s “Best of State”. The plans for a nine-hole, family friendly executive course is mapped out and a luxurious clubhouse is under construction.

Choose tennis, pilates, yoga, spa services, a fitness center or heated pools if golf is not your game. An over the top equestrian center can board your horse, or rentals are available as well. Regardless, whether you are a seasoned rider or new to horses you will want to navigate the countless miles of trails on the property.

If you need a reason to get out of town and away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Heber Valley may be the place for your next excursion. I can assure you the seasons change and with that the choices of activities. Any time of year I am betting you will feel at home with the residents of the area. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed in the food, fun or fellowship in Heber Valley.

Congratulations, you’re a new homeowner. Along with the joy of painting, plumbing and yard work, you now have new tax considerations. More importantly, there are substantial tax savings associated with purchasing a new home including mortgage interest, energy efficiency upgrades, home improvement loan interest and property tax deductions.

Another tax benefit to consider is the home office deduction. Whether you are self-employed or an employee, if you use a portion of your home for business, you may be able to take a home office deduction. Generally, you may take a deduction for the proportionate share of the expenses associated with a home office if it is your primary place of business or it’s a place to meet with clients or customers. The expenses include utilities, repairs and maintenance, insurance, interest expense and taxes. You can also deduct the furniture and equipment used in the office.

Through 2013, you could deduct sales taxes paid on improvements

to your home and furniture and appliances. Moreover, the IRS allowed for the deduction of sales tax during 2013. This includes a computation based on adjusted gross income and on substantial purchases last year. Substantial purchases are defined as items exceeding $500. This deduction can add up especially if you are filling your home with new furniture and appliances. Moving is an ideal time to clean out closets of unwanted clothing, furniture, appliances and equipment. Non-cash donations are an often overlooked and underrated deduction. Donating unused household items may be deducted at thrift store value which can allow for a substantial tax deduction.

When it comes time to sell, you can you can keep, tax free, capital gains of up to $250,000 if you are single and $500,000 if you are married filing jointly. To qualify, the home must have been your primary residence for at least two of the prior five years.

To take full advantage of these and other tax-deductable expenses as a homeowner, you’ll need to file a Form 1040 and claim these as

itemized deductions on schedule A. There are additional forms that require preparation for office-in-house. For most taxpayers, itemized deductions are an alternative to the standard deduction. In order to benefit from itemized deductions, keep in mind the total of all allowed expenses from your home, as with interest and property taxes and certain miscellaneous expenses, must exceed the standard deduction amount for your filing status.

THE MODERN CHIROPRACTOREveryone has a general idea of what most chiropractors can do. However, with over 5,000 actively licensed chiropractors in Texas, the profession is at its most diverse and most effective. By merging traditional philosophies with advanced methods, chiropractors continue to lead in pain management care and general wellness.

TRUSTED METHODS

Chiropractors perform adjustments-- that’s one fact most people

have correct. Adjustments increase motion to any restricted area of the skeletal system, most commonly the spine. What’s surprising is that many people don’t know that chiropractors can also adjust shoulders, knees, ankles, and any joint in the body that isn’t moving the way it should. Most days they go above and beyond simply working on low back pain and whiplash. They also treat migraines, frozen shoulder, pregnancy pains, sciatica, carpal tunnel, IT band syndrome, runner’s knee, and various other sprains and strains.

Some people may also know that in the state of Texas, chiropractors can perform acupuncture. It is one of the most ancient techniques with evidence showing that metal needles have been in use since the 2nd century B.C. So there’s no surprise that chiropractors use the same methods to induce relaxation in muscles and increase blood flow to injured regions. The reasons for using such an ancient method may differ from that of traditional Chinese medicine; however the positive results are the same.

MODERN MARVELS: TAPE + STEEL

Traditional chiropractic works wonders on the body; yet chiropractors must adapt in order to provide the best care for their patients. Two of the most sought after therapies today involve something as simple as tape and steel.

Believe it or not, kinesiology tape is not only a fashion statement. It may be bold and bright; however there is plenty of science behind the tape. K Tape has risen in popularity since the 2008 Olympics where many athletes were sporting colored tape provoking many questions. The tape is simple. There’s no medicinal quality to it, yet it works because of the way it is laid on the body. The tape can stretch to over 180% of its original length and can be cut to flow over pretty much any muscle or joint. Once laid over the desired area it can have multiple effects such as strengthening a weak muscle, providing joint stability, relaxing a tense overused muscle, and providing postural support. It can accomplish all this by increasing the blood flow to the area without restricting any motion like other sports tapes or braces. Today

there are various brands of kinesiology tape; however most provide the same results.

A little known technic that many chiropractors use in the treatment of many musculoskeletal disorders involves a set of stainless steel tools. These tools, whose origins hail from traditional Chinese medicine, help identify and remove scar tissue from injured muscles. This technique is often called Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM). It is also known as the Graston Technique® if the individual performing the treatment has completed the Graston Technique® Basic Training courses. Imagine a deep sports massage by using stainless steel tools. It doesn’t sound or feel pleasant,

Page 55: OurBlok Heights Winter 2014 Newcomers Guide

but after a few minutes, a notable increase in range of motion and a decrease in muscle tension can be felt. It is a go-to technique that many practitioners use post-surgery when scar tissue is forming. A good analogy is the formation of a scab when you injure your skin. The broken skin doesn’t return to normal until after a scab forms and heals the injured area. Well, the same thing happens within muscles. During exercise, activity, or injury, a muscle is constantly torn and re-forms with the help of tiny scabs, or scar tissue. This scar tissue lingers around causing tension, motion restrictions, and pain. Stretches, massages, and adjustments may also help.

SOMETIMES IT TAKES A VILLAGE

Now that you know a little more about the techniques chiropractors are using, it may be time to see if it works for you. There is hardly any musculoskeletal condition that they do not treat; and when their scope is out of range, most chiropractors do have a vast network of professionals ready to step in. In many cases they counsel medical doctors, physical therapists, nutritionists, and personal trainers, just to name a few.

The Center Name Family YMCA kicked off its Annual Campaign on date to help raise funds that will provide scholarships to local youth, teen, families and seniors. Each of the 37 YMCAs across the greater Houston area work together to meet the $6.9 million goal.

Last year, YMCA of Greater Houston association volunteers united to gain the trust and charitable support of more than 10,000 individual, corporate and foundation donors. They raised more than $6.5 million to support efforts at the Harriet and Joe Foster Family YMCA and the other communities throughout the Houston area.

These dollars will serve people in programs like child care, swim lessons, day camp, active older adults, and sports. Additionally the Foster Family YMCA provides service to three local apartment sites supporting the children there with positive role models and safe activities. The donations provide families in community name opportunities to spend quality time together and equip children with skills for the future. One hundred percent of the money raised for the Harriet and Joe Foster YMCA stays within the local community.

Today’s window covering options include many practical aspects. They help to control the amount of natural light filtering into the room. They also provide privacy, insulate against both heat and cold extremes, and include child safe features not available in years past.

At the same time, modern day window treatments make a distinct fashion statement; complimenting interior design, and enhancing room decor and ambiance. In fact, the right choice in window covering can turn the ordinary into extraordinary. Whether it’s a designer shade, a custom drapes, wood/faux wood blinds, solar screens or shutters.

Homeowners have nearly countless types of window enhancement features from which to select. While a wide selection is good, it can also complicate matters.Take blinds, for instance. Instead of simply having to determine what color to select — type, style, and added features must also be decided upon.

Consider the different types of window coverings now available:• Natural woven shade• Fabric window shade• Solar/Roller shade• Cellular/Honeycomb shades — single, double or triple cell• Pleated shades• Wood or Faux wood shades• Shutters

There is a nearly endless list of colors from which to select; solids, patterns, and designs. As well as texture and material type considerations. The choice can further be broken down into whether to select a lightweight, medium weight, or insulated window shade; sheer, light-filtering or blackout. And then which particular features to include; a pull or a wand, cord or cordless, manual or motorized. Located on the right or left side; to draw the shade up or down from the bottom or top. Or even from side to side.

The Choice is YoursWith focus on modern window shade trends, the list below includes some of the more popular available choices, and a brief description of each:• Natural woven shades — made from such eco-friendly materials as wood, bamboo, reeds, exotic grasses, or any number of about 60 other available options; these can be in

narrow, delicate weaves for understated beauty or slats woven together for a bolder statement.

• Fabric Shades — available in endless styles, colors, and designs; whether relaxed and casual, coolly sophisticated, or elegant —understated or elaborate. For extra privacy, light control, and insulation select styles with a blackout lining.• Solar/Roller shades — a clean, modern approach in window covering. Made from solar screen material that allows you to enjoy scenic outdoor views; providing privacy and reducing sun heat and glare, while protecting room furnishings from UV damage. Available in semi-sheer to opaque fabrics; measured in degrees of light penetration called openness. • Cellular/Honeycomb shades — ultra chic and beautiful. Cellular shades have a unique hexagonal cell design; creating still air pockets for significant insulation. Yet they weigh very little and are surprisingly economical. Petite cell shades are great for small to average sized windows; grand cell shades perfect for large-sized windows. Available with 1 to 3 cell layers that can block up to 99% of harmful UV rays. In countless styles (including room darkening).• Pleated shades — also referred to as pleated blinds, add style and a touch of class to room decor and are highly affordable. Their attractive, crisp, neat pleats compliment nearly any type window; including hexagon and dome-shaped. • Wood/Faux Wood blinds- Wood blinds compliment nearly any room’s decor with classic beauty. Rated high for energy efficiency, privacy, and light control, quality wood blinds can increase the market value of your home. Faux wood blinds have the beauty of real wood yet are less costly. They are easy to clean, and resist warping and fading.• Shutters- shutters offer aesthetic appeal for enhanced room decor. They protect room furnishings from harmful UV rays, help isolate outside noise, and provide optimum temperature insulation.

To whom it may Concern:

I approached Tiffanie Purvis regarding finding good development sites in the Houston area.

Tiffanie went to work and in no time she convinced me to develop and build homes in the Houston Heights Area.

Texas Real Estate & Co. helped me to secure a large parcel of land and it was enough to develop and build 27 homes. I could not be more happy and satisfied with the services and expertise Tiffanie and her group has shown.

In addition, she helped me secure another large tract in Shady Acres, since the purchase of the Heights property.

I am looking forward to a long prosperous relationship with Texas Real Estate & Co.

Respectfully,Amad Al-BannaRiverway Development
