METAPHOR The metaphor of Ouroboros, as we have understood, represents the mission of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation that is continuous innovation, a source of creating the Guggenheim museums and their collections we can watch, experience and engage across the worlds. In the coming years, a Guggenheim museum named Ouroboros will be built up in Helsinki, and the Mobius space embodied in this Guggenheim Helsinki epitomizes the eternal return of art innovation, a kind of constantly recreating itself.

LANDMARK As one part of earth landscaping, a specific shape of Ouroboros , with 90 meters height, activates the development of the bay area Eteläsatama and then integrates it with ships arriving from the south, the northern and eastern urban blocks and the western park. As a vantage, the top of the Mobius standing 80 meters tall is the most charming place where people overlook at and enjoy the whole bay area of beauty and therefore are reluctant to leave.

MASTERPLANA curved and elevated ramp is arranged through the Ouroboros, and extending from north to south and then west. Not only it creates a well-organized entrance area integrating the pedestrian spaces along yacht harbor, but also it ingeniously serve as an extremely active public space around the museum, as well as a link between the site and the park to the west. The waiting room of the harbor is inventively combined with the curved ramp.

GALLERIES SKY LIVING ROOM

FUNCTION The Ouroboros accommodates 12,000 sqm floor area, in which 3,900 sqm exhibition galleries, embedded in the tube-like vessel with 20/20 meters section, act as the characteristic spaces for demonstrating modern art inside and outside. The dinner in sky, constituted by flexible spaces with full size window overlooking view from the Mobius, is designed as the living room in sky for the city of Helsinki. A flexible performance/conference hall for 275 persons, hanged from the ceiling of the Mobius, work as an irresistible attractor by providing specifi c experiences within spaces. The whole tourist route is arranged along tube in a clockwise manner, and this not only offers a tour through the whole but also gives an alternative to the top directly.

MATERIALS For the Ouroboros , The wooden and glazed skins, created as dot gradient, are intermingled and rise up, which demonstrates strong vitality of timber. The internal galleries are built as irregular sphere with the wooden skin, and this expresses its own characteristics. Considering the cold weather of Helsinki, an enclosure layout is adopted for the whole building in which the glazed ceiling of the Mobius refl ects sky and disappear of itself in the daytime, but being crystal clear and dazzling like a fl ash at night.
