The circumstances attend- ing his enlistment, aud his utter- ances while in the service show that other than patriotic motives prompted him to become a soldier. We have shown by his record in the Senate in 1802 that he enrolled himself in the amall band of extreme Democrats in that body, refusing even to thank Mr. Lincoln for his efforts to crush the rebellion. Farther, after his en- listment to go to Dacotah, there to to "win glory and avoid the draft" we find him writing back to another Democrat in his own county, "I am heartily sick of this war, and ux/hidi- ed of- mysclf for being caught in it." Mr. Ainsworth has not denied this last utterance, and it may therefore be assumed as correct. We think that our readers will not recognize it ns the expression of a patriotic sol- dier, proud to bear arms in his coun- try's behalf. In view of this and other items of Mr. Ainsworth's record, we may be permitted to doubt the unguarded and unsupported statement of our cotemporary, that not a dozen soldiers in Fayette county opposed liiin for the Legislature. Further- more we may say confidently that as between a soldier of C'apt. Granger's antecedents, who went into the war from a sense of duty and patriotism, who served bravely, honorably, and uncomplaining until the war was ended, winning the approval of his Hiipcrior officers as well as the affec- tion and good will of every man under his command, and a soldier of the character shown by the above items from Mr. Ainswortlrs record, there cannot be much doubt as to the sympathy of not only the soldiers of Fayette county, but of Buchanan and the whole district. Notwithstanding the l>ri.i.KTix\s

effort to fisrht the war over, it is a

fact that Mr. Ainsworth was a vol

unteer soldier in the Union -army,

and that when ho was a candidate

for the Legislature, there were not a

dozen soldiers in_ Fayette county, ! ..

who did rot vote for hinu—Conscr- \ Win Lewis, goods furuivhed poor -I!*) - • iK'sis Letts, mowing II yard, ctc 6 iW

We hardly think that our eotein- I Sa111"1" -Mllkr- Bl-rvitis lln<lse

pory will help Mr. Ainsworth ma-1A

terially by allusion to his military

record. The circumstances attend

ing his enlistment, aud his utter

ances while in the service show that

other than patriotic motives prompted

him to become a soldier. We have

shown by his record in the Senate in

1802 that he enrolled himself in the

amall band of extreme Democrats in

that body, refusing even to thank

Mr. Lincoln for his efforts to crush

the rebellion. Farther, after his en

listment to go to Dacotah, there to

to "win glory and avoid the draft"

we find him writing back to another

Democrat in his own county, "I am

heartily sick of this war, and ux/hidi-ed of- mysclf for being caught in it."

Mr. Ainsworth has not denied this

last utterance, and it may therefore

be assumed as correct. We think

that our readers will not recognize it

ns the expression of a patriotic sol

dier, proud to bear arms in his coun

try's behalf. In view of this and

other items of Mr. Ainsworth's record,

we may be permitted to doubt the

unguarded and unsupported statement

of our cotemporary, that not a dozen

soldiers in Fayette county opposed

liiin for the Legislature. Further

more we may say confidently that as

between a soldier of C'apt. Granger's

antecedents, who went into the war

from a sense of duty and patriotism,

who served bravely, honorably, and

uncomplaining until the war was

ended, winning the approval of his

Hiipcrior officers as well as the affec

tion and good will of every man

under his command, and a soldier of

the character shown by the above

items from Mr. Ainswortlrs record,

there cannot be much doubt as to the

sympathy of not only the soldiers of

Fayette county, but of Buchanan and

the whole district.

MR. AINSWUKTII still declines to

«tate explicitly and unequivocally

whether lie is a Democrat or an Anti-

Monop. Mr. Ainsworth is solely re-

sponsible for the uncertainty in the

public mind on this point, as the

proofs that he is still a Democrat of

the ancient order, aud on the other

hand that he condemns and abandons . . , . ,• G Bemis, inpcrfcct desc

the Democratic party is furnished by ! John Hoth-tt. double ass't

bis own outgivings, or reported out- ! -Marv E Kitch. abatement of tax... . . . w , , . . Frea k Sage, reduction of assess-

givings. Uue word irotn hiiii, over

his own signature, would settle the

whole question, but still he refuses to

write it. The inevitable inference

is that he regards it as his interest to

mislead the people in the matter;

that he prefers to leave the question

of his political affiliations and sym

pathies in uncertainty, so that he

may, in strong Democratic communi

ties, like Dubuque, appear in his true

colors, and in the country where Re

publican sentiments have the aseend-

aucy, pretend to have abandoned his

anc-ieut faith aud name, and all this

t9 catch votes. Honest men of all

parties may judge whether this style

of political jugglery is calculated to

qualify the man who practices it for

s reformer.

Iowa—justly proud of her rising young rtieti—call boast, lie has been called to public trust, and completely filled the peoples' idea of a true public servant.

'i'hese are the "bottom facts" that

the people of all parties—the best

friends of 31 r. Ainsworth, as well as

others—thoroughly understand, and

no amount, of small or big lying, 110

amount of travelling "pin setting,"

no amount of stump demagoguery

can shake them loose from their con

viction in this regard. The thought

ful people of the Third District,

Democrats as well as Republicans,

mean to make Judge ({ranger the

next Congressman, and they mean to

do this, not through lack of appre

ciation of the personal qualities of

his opponent, but because of their ;

faith in the Judge's very distinguished j

fitness for the place. The (.'ongres- |

sional battle for this District was |

practically fought when ('. T. ({ran

ger accepted the nomination at Me

lt regor. I

ItiioKAK.MKi. has been heard from j

again. The Hoom Standard say*:—

"The Anti-Monopoly candidate for Register of the State Land Office, upon being interrogated by the tem-
