August 2016

Well July turned out to be one of the wettest months we have had for some time. Playing fields were down as the smart ones stayed inside. Hopefully we have turned the corner on winter and the course gets to dry out a bit. The staff have been busy with the new 14th bunker in play as well as the updating of some sand boxes and additional seating on some tees.

Winter rules are now in place with place the ball one card length through the green. This will help protect the course through its most vulnerable period. Finally a big thank you to those loyal members who have renewed their membership for the forthcoming year. It is your support that will ultimately make the club viable for many years to come.

TIP FROM THE TOUR

FROM THE PRO SHOP

‘ANgle of Attack. If you’re having trouble with catching the ball clean and struggling with ball striking, a common fault is coming to steep in the ball. This can be caused by a few faults, but the most common fault is weight transfer. Many amateurs don't use their weight correctly during the swing, generally getting too far ahead of the ball, causing you to chop down on the ball. FIX: Make sure you turn your weight over your right foot on the backswing, this will help get you behind the ball and allow you to drive through to the target without getting ahead of it.

Fitting Days September 1 Ping 10.30am-2pm September 17 Titliest 9am-1.30pm If your game needs a tune up see Matt

or Jake in the pro shop.

Matchplay Championship - Lachlan Tisma defeated Leigh Blyton in the final of Matchplay Championship and in the B Grade Paul Morshead defeated Simon Huszar. The C Grade final has been delayed with both finalists not being available.

Pennant 2017 – Thank you to the small number of members who forwarded suggestions and the Match Committee can now only presume that the majority of our members will be happy with any decision made for 2017.

Course closure Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 August – The course will be closed for annual maintenance and the Pro comp will move to Thursday August 25 and will be a medley event to allow those who missed golf on Tuesday and Wednesday to play.

Men’s 2017 Club Championships - The Match Committee has begun to plan for the clubs major event of the year and would like to have members give constructive ideas to make this event as successful as we would wish.

At present we have four rounds for the Club Championships and if timeslots are available daily event for those not able to play all four rounds.

To have more players involved in the championships we would like to introduce a 4th Grade for players on handicap 28 to 36 (yet to be confirmed) to be:

a) Playing Stroke over 4 rounds, or

b) Playing Stableford over 4 rounds.

Please send your considered ideas to [email protected] and your suggestions can cover other aspects of the event.

RULE UPDATE

Please make sure you read the local rule board. Rule 7 on the new card should include “if a ball strikes the Guy Wires it is to be a compulsory replay”.

A busy month for the Ladies this month. Congratulations to the Monthly Medal Winners: Debbie Baker (Tue) and Gill Maiden (Sat).

Also this month was qualifying for the NSW Women’s 4BBB vs Par. QBN qualifiers for the Regional Finals, to be held at Federal on 25 Aug 16, are: Margaret Moore & Debra Shand with Pauline Jeffrey & Debbie Baker. Best of luck to both teams. `11``Our team for the Canberra Challenge Bowl, like all others encountered lightning fast greens for the front nine, and the wind coming up a little on the exposed back nine. Most scores were surprisingly low, but as always there is one club who relishes the conditions and congratulations to Kiama.

On 24 July we held our Guest Day, what a success it was, with 16 teams competing in the Doyle Finances Sponsored event. The winners with a wonderful 45 points was our own Colleen Langi & Pam Carkeet from Belconnen. A big thankyou to the Greens staff and volunteers for their effort on trying to keep the course under control (with all the rain that we have had) and mainly free of debris over the last month with the high winds that we have experienced. We have all noticed the improvements to the paths, new seating and painting of poles (path from 17th etc). Well done to all. Upcoming in August is the NSW Women’s Bowl which is a 4BBB event on the 16th and 27th get your partners ready. Remember that you can only enter once, this is determined by your nominated day via special events payment, earlier this year. So make sure your partner has also nominated the same day (Tue or Sat). If in doubt as to what day you have nominated a list will be posted in the Ladies Room from 2 Aug.

Thank you to all the sponsors that have come on board recently and to the many others that have renewed their sponsorship for another year.

A big thank you to Paul Morshead for all the work he has put in with sponsorship and editing the newsletter.

As I write my contribution to the newsletter we start another golfing and financial year, it was great to see the membership renewals start early and continue through July culminating in a very busy final week, thanks to Jo, our very efficient office manager and also to Gail for her help and invaluable advice.

It is very important that all members support their club by using the facilities to the full.

The clubhouse offers a great atmosphere with all the major facilities available including Keno and TAB.

Our Bistro offers great value from snacks after golf to all day and night function catering.

We have strong support from our local residents but we need our golfing members to support the clubs facilities also.

We will be launching some new events in the clubhouse starting in September so keep checking our website for news and “Like” us on Facebook , copy this link to your web browser: https://www.facebook.com/queanbeyangolfclub/.

A reminder to mind your step when entering and exiting the Pro Shop.

You will see information on some of our sponsors later in this newsletter. I urge you to consider using these sponsors for their goods and services.

There is a saying on the Far South Coast that you do not know what winter is until you have had one in Queanbeyan / Canberra. Well this is my first winter here and that saying is definitely correct.

See you at our club.

NEW BRIGHTON 17 & 18 SEPTEMBER

The New Brighton trip in September is on the weekend of 17 and 18. This is a long running interclub comp. There are still a few spots left and if you are interested in attending please contact Dave Cunningham or Steve Dwight. So if you’ve never played New Brighton here is a great opportunity to do so.

COURSE NEWS

Course Super – Bryan Kelly Most of us will agree that our course is the wettest we have ever seen it. Record rains during June and July have resulted in a saturated course with some course closures. Please be sensible where you travel in carts and avoid wet areas. The 10th and 11th are particularly bad. We received 241 mm over those months with 23 days rain in July. Warmer weather in Spring will see rapid growth. Greens renovations will commence on Monday 22 Aug with the course being closed for 3 days. Hopefully the weather will be more favourable this year to allow us to have the greens as playable as possible before Thursday. The fairways will be fertilised 3-4 weeks before the Green Renovations. Please be patient for a week or two and repair all pitch marks as the greens recover. Some damage to the course from sewer and storm water cleaning is evident on the 18th. Treat these areas as GUR. More damage is likely at the start of the 18th fairway and the 16th hole. The company assigned to do this work by council is responsible to repair any damage caused. We have completed the bunkers on 14 and 17 and put some new seats, bins, ball washers and wine barrels out (see pictures in newsletter). Thanks to Daniel Goodchild and the volunteers for their assistance with these improvements. Enjoy your golf, respect your course as we look forward to some more favourable weather soon. .
