1. The BeatlesNo band has influenced pop culture the way

the Beatles have. They were one of the best things to happen in the twentieth century, let alone the Sixties. They were youth personi-fied. They were unmatched innovators who were bigger than both Jesus and rock & roll itself: During the week of April 4, 1964, the Beatles held the first five slots on the Billboard Singles chart; they went on to sell more than a billion records; and 2000’s 1, a compilation of the Beatles Number One hits, hit Number One in 35 countries and went on to become the best-selling album of the 2000s.

2. Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin started in 1968 consisting of Jimmy Page on guitar, Robert Plant doing vocal), John Paul Jones playing bass guitar, and keyboard and John Bonham on drums. Led Zeppelin was known for a heavy guitar sound, and are known to be one of the first heavy metal bands. However, they have a unique style that by many genres. Every member of the band became a legend. They influenced many other artits and bands.

The Led Zeppelin were known for their per-formances. On “Stairway to Heaven” Jimi Page plays the best guitar solo of all time. John Bonham, the drum-mer, is considered one of the best drummers ever. Rover Plant is one of the best singers in rock history.After Bonham died in 1980, the group disbanded. Led Zeppelin has sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide and all of their original stu-dio albums reached the top 10 of U.S. rank-ing, six of those hit #1.


3. Pink Floyd Pink Floyd started in London in 1965 after Syd Barrett from Cambridge moved there and joined The Tea Set. The Tea Set wasa small group made up of Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Richard Wright. Pink Floyd was met with moderate success in the mainstream but became one of the most popular bands in the London underground toward the end of the 1960s. Roger Walter’s grew as the band’s leader throughout the 1970’s and reamined so until he left the group in 1985. Althought the group held continued popularity in Eng-land throughout their career. However, they did not achieve worldwide success until the release of The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, Wish You Were Here in 1975,

Animals in 1977, and the rock opera The Wall in 1979. Pink Floyd is known today for their psy-

chedelic and space rock music during thier early career followed the the progressive rock music they became popular for in thier later years. Their songs included sonic experimentation, philosophical lyrics, elaborate live shows, and innovative album cover art. The rock band has sold more that two-

hundred million albums world and are one of rock music’s most successful acts. Many popular rock bands have been influenced over the years including Nine Inch Nails, Genesis, Dream Theatre and Yes.

4. Jimi Hendrix

The Jimi Hendrix Experience started in London in 1966 and had both English and American influ-ences. The original members in-cluded Jimi Hendrix, an American singer, songwriter and guitarist, Noel Redding, the band’s backing vocalist and bassist Mitch Mitch-ell on drums. The Jimi Hendrix Experience released three success-

-ful albums before Redding left the band in June of 1969. After Redding’s departure from the rock band, Hendrix and Mitchell joined up with Billy Cox, a bassist and a few other musicians to Gypsy Sun and Rainbows, a short-lived band that played at Woodstock. jimi hendrix was a legendary guitarist. Their performances were incredible. Jimi played guitar with lips and back. His success was so big that he is considered, by many people, the best and most influential guitarist of all time.Hendrix was influenced by blues artists such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Albert King and Elmore James,rhythm and blues and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield and Steve Crop-per, and the jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery.

On September 18, 1970 Jimi Hendrix went into a coma in a London hotel room, alone, he was found unconscious by a team of paramedics. The way to the hospital confirmed his death was due to suffocation by his own vomit. There is much controversy about the actual cause of death, but probably Hendrix overdosed on pills tranquilizers.


5. Van Halen Van Halen started Pasadena, California in 1972. This hard rock band became successful fol-lowing the release of their debut album in 1978 named Van Halen. Van Hales was created by the

brothers Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen - Guitarrist, and Alex Van Halen - Drummer). Van halen isn’t just known for it’s success, the exits of their former members has been dramitc and widely publicized through-out the years. David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar both left the band several times. Each departure from the group was met with controversy and mass press coverage. The confusing press coverage showed highly contrasting statements made by the former members and the band. More recently, the band kicked member Michael Anthony for controversial

reasons. The band took a brief hiatus from 2004 until September of 2006 when they hired Wolf-gang as their new bass guitarist. And finally, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 12, 2007, amidst rumors of Roth reuniting with the group.Eddie Van Halen created new techniques to play guitar.

6. The DoorsJim Morrison and Ray Manzarek met when they were students at UCLA’s film school. Robbie Krieger and John Densmore were in a band called The Psychedelic Rangers, and knew Manzarek through their meditation classes. Together, they formed The Doors in 1965, borrowing the name from The Doors Of Perception, a novel by Aldous Huxley. The group released its first album, The Doors in 1967. Rise and Fall:Although rooted in blues and R&B, the band developed a distinctive sound that included elements of classical and flamenco music. Morrison, with his good looks, emotional vocals and often cryptic lyrics, was the object of most the attention focused on the band. Drugs and alcohol took a toll on Morrison’s onstage performances and offstage behavior. His death in 1971, at age 27, remains a mys-tery. The official cause of death was listed as a heart attack, but no autopsy was performed.


Chuck Berry is one of the pioneers of rock and roll music. According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s website, “While no indi-vidual can be said to have invented rock and roll, Chuck Berry comes the closest of any single figure to being the one who put all the essential pieces together.” Cub Koda wrote, “Of all the early breakthrough rock & roll artists, none is more important to the develop-ment of the music than Chuck Berry. He is its greatest songwriter, the main shaper of its instrumental voice, one of its greatest guitar-ists, possessing the clearest diction, and one of its greatest performers.” John Lennon said: “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry’.”Berry was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986.

7. Chuck Berry 8. The WhoThe Who were one of the great rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s. In its glory years the group consisted of guitarist and main songwrit-er Pete Townshend (b. 19 May 1945), singer Roger Daltrey (b. 1 March 1944), bassist John Entwistle (b. 9 October 1944, d. 27 June 2002) and drummer Keith Moon (b. 23 August 1946, d. 7 September 1978). Early on the group was part of the “Mod” movement, playing R&B

music in stylized tailored suits, before morph-ing into an unruly proto-punk band famous for smashing its instruments at the end of live performances.the who influenced the live performance. after their concerts they broke all the instruments. Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock. The band incorporated classical music, blues-rock, pop and progressive rock elements. They were once listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as “the loudest pop group”, and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide.The band has gone through many line-up changes and an eight-year hiatus (1976–84).

The 1968–76 line-ups are commonly labelled Mark I, II, III and IV. Their second and most commercially success-ful line-up featured Ian Gil-lan (vocals), Jon Lord (key-boards), Roger Glover (bass),

Ian Paice (drums) and Ritchie Blackmore (guitar). This line-up was active from 1969 to 1973 and was revived from

9. Deep Purple 1984 to 1989 and again in 1993, before the rift between Blackmore and other mem-bers became unbridgeable. The current line-up (includ-ing guitarist Steve Morse) has been much more stable, although Lord’s retirement in 2002 has left Paice as the only original member never to have left the band. 10. NirvanaNirvana was an American rock band that was formed by singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-last-ing being Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990.They are credited with popularizing grunge music. Many of the novel rock bands are in-fluenced by them. Despite only using simple guitar riffs, Kurt Cobain is one of the most influential artists of all time.We can say that anywhere on the globe to sing the songs of Nirvana, and everyone recognizes the talent of the principal mem-ber of the band - Kurt Cobain. Nicko Mcbrain Interview

Nicko McBrain is the drummer of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. He is not only adored by fans of iron maiden but by all drummers. Nicko McBrain is one of the great drummers in the history of music. The “Out of Tune” got an exclusive interview with him.Have you learned to play drums all by yourself? Nicko - I started to play the tubs when I was twelve years old. A friend of mine called Ritchie Hudson; I first met him at his fruit and veg stall in Wood Green when I used to help me mum with the shopping on a Friday after school, also worked at the local Berry’s music shop in Haringey. He’d let me go over to his mums and jam on his kit until he got home from work on the barrow. We’d sit and jam along to records and then he’d show me a lick or two, I used to really look forward to those times. Do you ever wish you could get up & run around on stage instead of being stuck be-hind the drum kit?

Nicko - No it doesn’t bother me in the least mate. I’m very, very happy right where I am. What does your drum kit consist of? How many toms, bass pedals… Nicko - My kit consists of nine toms, snare and bass drum. 6,8,10,12,13,14,15,16,18 floor. 14x5 snare, 24x18 bass drum. “Paiste” cymbals 14 hats, 12,16,17,19,20,24 power crash’s 20 medium crashes 17,18, rude, 22 china all the Dimension line. I use DW foot pedals One bass drum pedal and one Hi Hat.Nicko, what do you think about Bruce solo albums? Nicko - I think that Bruce’s solo albums are great. Bruce is an awesome artist. He has one of the best voices of ever, in rock his-tory.


Have you ever played drums in a setting outside of rock, like in a jazz band, or strictly in rock music? Nicko - I haven’t actually played in anything remotely like a jazz band, but I start on Jazz. I was a drum Whore for many years before I joined the Maiden. I used to play on all kinds of records with all kinds of people with all kinds of music hence the whore thing. You have been playing in Maiden for more than 20 years. What keeps you going? Nicko - One of the main reasons that I have been playing so long with the guys is simple; we love what we do together. The music is the entity of Maiden my friend it’s that sim-ple. In almost every band, the guy who plays drums is the least famous. How do you feel about that? Would you like a bigger part? Nicko - You are kidding aren’t you! I am the most famous guy in the band. I am most defi-nitely the best looking and most handsome geezer out there. That is why the rest of the guys like me to hide behind such a humon-gous kit.What was the best and the worst ever live show with Maiden? Nicko - Best Maiden live show was Don-nington 1998. Worst live show was Chicago 2000. Why do you handle your drumstick on the extremity? Nicko - I use my left hand stick back to front as t gives me more weight and therefore more power for the snare hits. Is there any Maiden song(s) that you have never played live, but would like to? Nicko - Yes I would love to play” Alexander the Great” live I think it would be awesome. Do you like to play drums on your free time and if you do, how much do you play in a day?Nicko - I play with a few mates when I’m back in England. I play with Geoff White-horn, Jaz Lockrie, Phil Hilborn and Andy Frost. We usually play at drum shows and the

odd Trade shows in Europe.When I’m home in Florida I practice maybe twice a week for a couple of hours. In all the rock bands you’ve been and seen who’s the best singer you have en-countered? Nicko - I think one of the best singers I’ve ever seen has to be Ronnie James Dio. With which bassist, except Steve Harris, you would like to play? Nicko - I would very much like to jam with Jack Bruce (Cream) and also (Jimmy Bain). I’ve always loved the way they play.I heard your wife also has got a band. What is the band’s name and what does she play? Is their CD available? Nicko - Yes my wife does have a project un-derway; we’re just going out under her name Rebecca McBrain. There is a CD kicking around at the moment titled Rebecca Mc-Brain and friends. It’s not out on the market but I’ll let you guys know through the Inter-net if it becomes available. Nicko, how much pair of drumsticks you are breaking while one concert and the whole tour? Nicko - I will go through five or six pairs of sticks a night, multiply that by five = thirty pairs a week, multiply that by the months on tour, six = one hundred and eighty pairs total, give or take a few extras. What was the most funny and the most serious moments until now? Nicko - The funniest moments on this tour were when we played in Philadelphia at the front of the stage there were three or four couples of old fart punters and they were eating and drinking through the show, it was really weird to see this going on, there was also a ‘Kin waitress delivering said grub to them. What is the world coming to? The worst part was when Janick fell from the stage in Mannheim. It was an experience that I do not want to live through again.

Regional folk music remains popular too, having been updated and modernized in many cases, especially the northeastern region of Trás-os-Montes.Dance, Rock, pop, house and Hip Hop are among the most popular musical styles in Portugal; however, the recent arrival of revivalist folk bands, such as Deolinda, led to a newfound interest in this type of music.

Fado

Fado (fate in Portuguese) arose in Lisbon as the music of the urban poor. Fado songs are typical-ly lyrically harsh, with the singer resigned to sad-ness, poverty and loneliness, but remaining dignified and firmly controlled.Many claim that fado origins are much old-er, back to the 15th century, when women cried with longing for their husbands that went to the never sailed seas; others also claim that Arabic inprint in Fado is visible, especially in instruments. Arabs left Portu-gal in the 13th century , but their influence in crafts and music prevailed. Fado is often

sung with a Portuguese guitar. Late in the 19th century, the city of Coimbra developed a distinctive scene. Coimbra, a liter-ary capital for the country, is now known for being more refined and majestic. The sound has been described as “the song of those who retain and cherish their illusions, not of those who have irretrievably lost them” by Rodney Gallop in 1936. A related form are the guitar-radas of the 1920s and 30s, best known for Dr. Antonio Menano and a group of virtuoso musicians he formed, including Artur Paredes and José Joaquim Cavalheiro. Student fado, performed by students at Coimbra University, have maintained a tradition since it was pio-neered in the 1890s by Augusto Hilário.Starting in 1939 with the career of Amália Rodrigues, fado was an internationally popu-lar genre. A singer and film actress, Rodrigues made numerous stylistic innovations that have made her probably the most influential fadista of all time.A new generation of young musicians have contributed to the social and political revival of fado music, adapting and blending it with new trends. Contemporary fado musicians like Mariza, Mísia and Camané have introduced the music to a new public. The sensuality of Misia and other female fadistas (fado sing-ers) like Maria Ana Bobone, Cuca Roseta, Cristina Branco, Ana Moura, Katia Guerreiro, and Mariza has walked the fine line between carrying on the tradition of Amália Rodrigues and trying to bring in a new audience. Mísia and Carlos do Carmo are also well known fado singers.Ricardo Ribeiro and Miguel Capucho are one of the best male fado singers of the new generation.


Political Music

During the reign of the fascist regime music was widely used by the left-wing resistance as a way to say what could not be said, singing about freedom, equality and democracy, mainly through metaphors and symbols. Many composers and singers became famous and persecuted by the po-litical police, some of them being arrested or exiled, such as Zeca Afonso, Paulo de Carvalho, José Mário Branco, Sérgio Go-dinho, Adriano Correia de Oliveira, Man-uel Freire, Fausto, Vitorino, Júlio Pereira and some others.José Afonso began performing in the 1950s; he was a popular roots-based musician that led the Portuguese roots revival. With artists like Sérgio Godinho and Luís Cília,

Afonso helped form nova canção music, which, after the 1974 revolution, gained socially-aware lyrics and became canto livre. The biggest name in canto livre was Brigada Víctor Jara, a group that seriously studied and were influenced by Portuguese regional music.After the Carnation Revolution, that same music was used to support left-wing parties. Political ideas and causes, like the agrar-ian reform, socialism, equality, democratic elections, free education and many other were a constant presence in these songs lyr-ics, often written by well-known poets like José Barata-Moura, Manuel Alegre or Ary dos Santos.

Rock and other

The rock in Portugal was born in the 80s of the 20th century. Its beginners were Rui Veloso and Jorge Palma, among others. An example of a popular Portuguese rock band, having a long history, is Xutos & Pontapés who’ve been playing for over 30 years and are known widely throughout Portugal, as well as Mão Morta , a unique and controversial group with 25 years of existence. Well known solo singers include Rui Veloso, Jorge Palma, and Pedro Abrunhosa. Blasted Mechanism (experimental electro-rock), RAMP (metal), ThanatoSchizO (metal), Faithfull (soft rock), Riding Pânico (post rock), Linda Martini (post/noise rock), Or-natos Violeta (indie rock) or Green Echo (experimental dub) are other important acts.

Portuguese hip hop (Hip Hop Tuga)

The beginning of the 21st century was the origin of a new wave of Portuguese Hip Hop sing-ers, who adapted foreign sounds to the Portuguese reality and who sing in Portuguese. Some of the best examples are Da Weasel, Boss AC and Sam the Kid.

Heavy metal

The biggest exponent of heavy metal music in Portugal is the band Moonspell, originally from Lisboa and who have achieved some international recognition, mainly in Finland, the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey.


Electronic music

In electronica, Underground Sound of Lis-bon was a musical project that brought international attention to the Portuguese DJs, namely Rui da Silva – the only Portuguese musician to reach #1 on the UK charts – and DJ Vibe, Pete tha Zouk. Some other impor-tant names of this kind of music are Buraka Som Sistema and Micro Audio Waves. In Porto, the hometown to numerous talents such as Nuno Forte, Drum n’ Bass styles are immensely popular, and the city has hosted various important international names in the genre such as Noisia, The Panacea and

Black Sun Empire.

Experimental and Avantgarde

Portuguese music has a striving experimen-tal underground musical scene since the 80’s, with some exponents attaining interna-tional attention. Notable groups and musi-cians in this genre are Osso Exótico, Ocaso Épico, Telectu, Carlos Zíngaro and Pedro INF.

Popular and Rock

Other popular music include bands born out of Portuguese ‘telenovelas’ or ‘soap-op-eras’. The first wave of such bands included 4Taste and DZRT who went on to gain national popularity.

Eurovision participa-tionsPortugal has been participating at the Euro-vision Song Contest since 1964, and has yet to win the competition, its best result being

the 6th place achieved by Lucia Moniz’s folk inspired song “O meu coração não tem cor” in 1996, penned by Pedro Vaz Osorio. Since then Portugal never had a Top 10

place.

Portuguese-descent singers in the worldMusicians such as Nelly Furtado, Katy Perry, Kenny Rogers and Nuno Bettencourt (the latter actually Portugal-born) are popu-lar in North America, though only Nelly Furtado reflected some of her Portuguese origin, especially in lesser-known songs in her first albums (songs like “Scared” sung by Furtado in English and Portuguese, “Nas Horas do Dia” and “Força”). Luso-fran-cofonic artists (also of Portuguese origin): Linda de Suza and Marie Myriam. Steve Perry, former lead singer of rock group Journey is American of Portuguese ancestry.

After several attempts finally suc-ceed. He began playing in the street and later on some holidays. On the street people gave him money and that money could buy a real battery. Today he is part of a band and help the family.

One man played guitar. In a band where he played, he had many fans, they did everything to please their fans including guitarist. This guitarist began to enter other projects not known but the fans have discovered that this was to leave the band. One day they were at a concert when a fan climbed on stage and shot the guitarist, killing him. Sometimes the fans are quite obsessive going into this hype.Since young, Brian liked to hear the sound of guitars.Time went on, Brian was growing and was eight years old he received his first elec-tric guitar. Play every day was a joy to him.In their times of adolescence formed his first garage band, with his best friend Bruno (drummer), his cousin Eduardo (lead singer) and the neighbor Nuno (bassist).The time went faster and faster, until Brian got his first job, carpenters.It was a profession of their liking, but the passion for music could overcome every-thing.The band, with the name “Four Play”, was also gaining popularity, even becoming-known as much of the country.All was well when Brian has cut two fingers in an accident at work. At that mo-ment the world seemed to “fall at his feet”. Brian thought he could never play guitar again.Admittedly, the band broke up, but Brian, with much effort and practice, continued to play guitar, albeit in different ways and with more difficulty.Even with these drawbacks, it could be worse ... Well, what matters is not fame, but being able to continue doing what we love most ... and enjoy the moment!
