President’s Letter
Happy Fall Everyone,
It is hard to believe fall is here. I hope everyone had a good
summer.
I want to thank everyone for all of the hard work that went into our
Picture Perfect Day.
I think things went very well. We had an average of 24 people
there for most of the day. We made 510 greeting cards and 225
Picture Books. It is such a pleasure working with this group. It is
amazing what we get done working together.
Our last big project for this year is the Fall Festival of Quilts. This
is to show what our organization is doing in the Community.
We will be doing a display at the library again this year for HCE
week.
Thanks again to all of you for your hard work in this organization.
I hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season.

Advisor’s Letter
Dear HCE Friends,
“Blessed are the Flexible for they shall not be bent
out of shape!” Change is the name of the game and
looking to our future we are moving into unmarked
territory of how we will look and operate a year
from now. We are committed to teach, learn, lead
and serve, connecting people with the University of
Wisconsin, and engaging with them in transforming
lives and communities. We value the communities
we work with by empowering others and ourselves
to listening to and learning from and respecting
local knowledge. We promote lifelong learning and
strive to recognize, appreciate and honor the
differences, similarities and contributions of all
people and communities. We foster positive
relationships through honesty, open communication
and accountability. Finally we respect and
appreciate the resources of the state. We honor and
value each other’s time and talents.
Thank you for your support as we move forward.

Membership “Each One – Reach One”
This is our moto for membership – an organization is only as strong as our weakest link. Are you a weak link?
Committee Reports
Charity Workshop
We have been working on items that can be sold at the Quilt Show.
We have several items finished and hope to be able to give away 4 patriotic quilts.
We are also working on Emergency Card Kits. We have requests for some and we usually do 85 for Camp
American Legion.
Thank you for all of the donations. It really helps in making these projects succeed.
Wisconsin Bookworms™
The Wisconsin Bookworms program starts October 7 for this year. The 10 volunteer readers
will be going into all the Head Starts in Outagamie County. Each month the readers will be
reading books, doing activities with the children and give each child a book. There are a
wide variety of books this year. The “Balancing Act” is the first book about two mice who make a teeter-totter.
They get on and are balancing just fine, along comes a frog and hops on one end. What do you think happens
next? Next comes “Who has a Tail?” Children get to guess the owners of the tails and get to see the animal/tail
in action. A book about the alphabet is called “LMNO Peas”. Children work and play their way through the
alphabet. “Lola Reads to Leo” is about Lola having fun picking out books to read to her baby brother Leo. The
“Cows to the Rescue” is a fun and silly book. It is about a day at the County Fair for Farmer Greenstalk’s
family. What could be more fun, but things keep going wrong and who comes to their rescue? Imagine “If You
Give a Pig a Party”, she is going to ask for all kinds of things. What things do you think she will need for her
party? The “Very Hungry Caterpillar” will eat his way through the pages of the book and will change before the
children’s eyes. The last book “Tortillas are Round/Las Tortillas Son Redondas” is a very lively picture book,
where children will discover a world of shapes all around them and maybe learn a few words in Spanish.
To continue getting funding for our Wisconsin Bookworms program, we are having an extra fundraiser this year.
At our Fall Festival of Quilts show on November 7 at the Starlite, corner of JJ and 55. We will be selling quilts
(all sizes), lap robes, wall hangings, table runners and smaller items. All proceeds go the Wisconsin
Bookworms. If you can donate, please contact Linda Biese soon at 833-2618.

Picture Perfect Project Our Picture Perfect Project was about recycling calendars and greeting cards to fulfill a need.
Donated calendars were cut to size, put in non-glare sheet protectors, and rings attached. We made 212 booklets
and 25 binders for children. (Binders were donated by Thrivent.)
Greeting cards were cut apart and made new cards. These cards will be put in Emergency Card Folders and will
be given individually to several places.
Our committee had approximately 42 hours preparing for this project.
We had 26 volunteers who worked on September 23. They put in 216 hours working on this project.
This project informed the public of the need. We worked with the public to make this project a success.
The recipients who receive these items are thrilled and the impact it makes on them mentally in a simple
discovery.
We opened this to the public and in advertising. For this we contacted the local news stations and newspapers.
We had coverage from Channel 11 Good Day Wisconsin, Channel 26 Making a Difference, and Freedom
Pursuit Paper. We still have donations coming in.
We have been doing this for many years and by doing this project we showed how easy it is to get involved. It
is so rewarding to give generously. Everyone enjoyed the experience and asked when they could do it again.

Dear Giving Bees,
On May 7, I was diagnosed with breast cancer – just two weeks after my own
mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The following week, I received a
beautiful and functional heart pillow from you. You have no idea the comfort this
pillow has brought to me – both physical and emotional. To think, there are people
who have never met me or others fighting this battle, but daily help them to be
warriors is so inspiring. From a 40-year old mother of two children kicking
cancer’s butt.
Thank you!

Feature Article
Country Apples meets on the third Thursday at the Center Town Hall at noon. The 26 members enjoy the
educational programs and making quilts for those in need. Thanks to Mary Ann Nettekoven filling out the
nomination form, County Apples was one of three clubs recognized for community service at the State HCE
Conference for the quilts. At the Center Town Hall, the club changes a display quilt to go with the season.
We are extremely proud of club member Ethel Diermeier, who was recognized in September as the Citizen of
the Year for Black Creek.
Upcoming meetings include the October meeting beginning with lunch at Good Company and then touring the
Trout Museum in Appleton. At the November meeting, we will have a silent auction as a fundraiser.
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Ethel Diermeier for being recognized as Citizen of the Year for Black Creek. She has been a
long-time member of HCE and active Wisconsin Bookworms™ reader.
Welcome!
We welcome Shari Peterson as the new Program Assistant at the UW-Extension office. She began her position
on October 12, 2015. She had worked part-time for the Seymour Police Department before coming to UW-
Extension.
