Question 4  A Year 9/10 School rafting group led by a Rafting Guide are on a 4-day river journey. Late in the afternoon on day 3, an accompanying teacher decides that the group should take a break from setting up camp to climb nearby Mount Erehwon. This is a 645 metre rocky mountain with a very steep access and approximately a 2 ½ hour return walk. The group is tired but determined to get to the summit for the promising views to the setting sun. As the group begins the descent back to camp, one of the students falls and injures their knee, and is unable to walk. The Rafting Guide, thinking that the summit walk would be short and uneventful, did not carry a first-aid kit or any communication devices.

Question 6  It is the beginning of the school year. A group of 20 Year 7 students are undertaking their first day walk. The walk is on a clearly defined track but at times overgrown. In the last part of the walk, the wind strengthens and the group begins to spread out along the track. Students rush to the river to rock-hop and throw rocks. Question 1  In early Autumn in Tasmania a group of 7 recently graduated Year 12 students go on a bush walk. They decide to tackle a challenging 5-day circuit on a mountainous route in an alpine area. Before they leave, the ex-students nominate one of the group members to be their leader. The group find themselves lost in deep snow on day 3, with dwindling supplies of food and dry clothing. The nominated leader of the group, an energetic but inexperienced alpine bushwalker, wondered what to do as he/she realises that the group was not adequately prepared for such a walk in these conditions. Question 10  A new proposed mountain bike park is set to open later this year in a small Tasmanian town located close to an iconic National Park. Mountain bike riders will be able to ride the biggest vertical drop in the Southern Hemisphere, with a series of graded downhill tracks plunging over 830 metres. This proposed development is in response to a 51 per cent increase in mountain biking visitors to Tasmania. The people behind this new development claim that there are many values to such a development; including employment, world-class biking, sightseeing, ecotourism, plans for expansion into the future, and opening up further tourism opportunities in regional and rural areas of the state. Describe and justify how this type of adventure-based outdoor recreation may increase interactions and shape the attitudes and values for participants with the natural environment. (30 minutes)

Answer EITHER Question 11 or Question 12 in this section. It is recommended you spend approximately 30 minutes on this section. Question 11  Antarctica remains one of the last unspoilt environments on earth and, arguably, this is as a result of careful management and very little human activity. The Australian Antarctic Territory covers 42% of Antarctica, the largest territory of any country. The Australian Government has come under enormous pressure recently from multinational companies to look at ways in which Australia can develop Antarctica. These companies are considering further opportunities for tourism and resource development (e.g. mining exploration, commercial fishing) in Antarctica. Describe the potential impact of these activities to this unique wilderness area. Discuss the possible impact on human-nature experiences for the people who visit Antarctica. (30 minutes)

 Question 12  The Tarkine/takayna is the name given to the region of north-west Tasmania which has the greatest expanse of cool temperate rainforest in Australia, and the second largest in the world. Bounded by the Southern Ocean to the west, the Arthur River to the north, the Pieman River to the south, and the Murchison Highway to the east, this ancient landscape is very significant to aboriginal people. For them, this area is a place of healing; this cultural landscape soothes their wounds and helps them to heal from the suffering of a time of great death and exploitation. Visitors to the Tarkine/takayna may have different understandings, experiences and attitudes about aboriginal culture in Tasmania. Visitors may not understand the role that aboriginal people play in safeguarding this natural environment for safekeeping for future generations. As an Outdoor Guide working in an area like the Tarkine/takayna explain how you might support these visitors to understand the connection aboriginal people have with their cultural landscape. Discuss how you would support visitors to appreciate the values held by the aboriginal community. Describe how you could make this experience increase the connection the visitors have with the natural environment. (30 minutes)
