THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Spoken in Unison)

Lord God, you know the ways of good and evil. You know the things that tempt us and the things that give life. You know our nakedness and you know our sin. We confess that we have disobeyed your word, denying your providence and care and relying on our own cleverness. Have mercy on us, we pray; cover us with your grace, feed us with the bread of life, and re-create us in your image; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

~ The Word of the Lord ~

THE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION ...................................................... Brenda Brown, Liturgist

THE FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON: Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-3 ...................... Brenda Brown, Liturgist

The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, ‘You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.’

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God say, “You shall not eat from any tree in the garden”?’ The woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.”

THE CHORAL ANTHEM: “All to Me” ..................................................................... Scott Jeffries The Sanctuary Choir

THE SECOND SCRIPTURE LESSON: Genesis 3: 4-13 ............................. The Rev. Dr. Jody Moore

But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves. They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’

LEADER: This is the Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

THE SERMON: “Making Excuses for Our Sins” ........................... The Rev. Dr. Jody Moore

♦THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Spoken in Unison) ........................................... The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic (Universal) church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

~ The Sacrament of Holy Communion ~

♦THE HYMN NO. 819: “Be Still, My Soul” .......................................................................... FINLANDIA

THE INVITATION TO THE LORD'S TABLE & THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

LEADER: The Lord be with you. PEOPLE: And also with you. LEADER: Lift up your hearts. PEOPLE: We lift them up to the Lord. LEADER: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. PEOPLE: It is right to give God thanks and praise. LEADER: As we join with all the angels singing:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest.

THE LORD'S PRAYER (Spoken in Unison)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.

THE COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE

We offer communion by intinction. Dip the bread in the chalice as it is passed to you.

When taking the bread say: This is the body of Christ given for you. When taking the cup say: This is the blood of Christ shed for you.

Lenten Devotionals Now Available

The Lenten Devotional booklet, At the Crossroads, is now available. You may pick up your copy in the Gathering Space!

Lent is the perfect season to consider the critical crossroads of life, losses, transitions, choices, uncertainties and disappointments - those times when faith and life intersect. These devotions for Lent by Rev. David Kehret, an experienced campus minister, help us to become more keenly aware that our crucified and risen Savior navigated the difficult crossroads of this world for the sake of our salvation, equipping us to navigate the crossroads of our own lives.

As you may remember, during Advent we used devotions from Union Seminary. They are doing a similar thing during Lent. You may sign up to receive their free devotionals delivered to your email at https://upsemdevotions.wordpress.com

Welcome!

Welcome to the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church. Our Church exists to worship God in Jesus Christ in Word and Sacrament; to join others to know the joy of God’s forgiveness in Jesus Christ; to grow under the Lordship of Christ and to serve Christ’s world in His name. We invite you to share with us our trust in Jesus Christ and to join us as we strive to:

Grow and strengthen our FAITH,

Love and support our FAMILY,

Reach out to our FRIENDS in need.

We encourage you to read “Sue’s Story,” the inspiration behind these goals in its entirety, on our website, on a brochure in the Gathering Space or on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. We hope you will be inspired as we have been.

At OBPC, we recognize all of our visitors as God’s children, united as brothers and sisters in Christ. We hope our service inspires you and strengthens your faith. We hope you will join us again in celebration and worship to God. If you are interested in becoming a member or would like to know more about our church or any of our programs, please contact us!

Our church believes providing worship for visitors is a vital part of our mission. Our building was planned to accommodate the many visitors who come to this vacation community. This places an additional financial challenge on our resident membership. We need and welcome financial support from our visitors.
