3.2 Types of Reactions1) Simple Composition Reactions
When two or more simple elements combine to form a compound
Exothermic
The product is ALWAYS a compound, in a simple composition reaction
Element 1 + Element 2 > Compound A + B > AB

2) Simple Decomposition Reactions These are reactions that breaks a compound into its component elements
endothermic
The products are ALWAYS elements, in a simple decomposition reaction.
Compound > Element 1 + Element 2 CD > C + D

3) Combustion Reactions Combustion reactions ALWAYS occur in the presence of oxygen
Exothermic
Oxygen and fuel are ALWAYS the reactants; carbon dioxide, water vapour, and energy are ALWAYS the products
fuel + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water vapour + energy

4) Neutralization Reactions Neutralization reactions ALWAYS occur in presence of an acid and base
Acid and base are ALWAYS the reactants; a salt and water are ALWAYS the products
acid + base > salt + water

3.4 Chemical Equations
Law of Conservation of Mass states that matter can neither be created or destroyed. In other words, when a reaction occurs the reactants must equal the products.
founder: Antoine Lavoisier
Application Examples:Sodium + chlorine > sodium chloride
If you have 0.7 grams of chlorine and 3.3 grams of sodium, how many grams of sodium chloride will you have?

Barium + oxygen > barium oxide
If there is 0.5 grams of barium and 1.0 grams of barium oxide, how many grams of oxygen should there be?

Staying Balanced
Scientists must use balanced equations. This means that all atoms must balance out. It is very similar to the law of conservation of mass.
How many atoms of hydrogen do you have on the reactant side?
How many hydrogen atoms do you have on the product side?
Are they the same?

Work with a partner: Which of the following are balanced?
1) Cl2 + 2 KI > 2 KCl + I2
2) 3 Li + 2 H2O > 2 LiOH + H2
3) Zn + H2SO4 > ZnSO4 +H2
4) 2 Mg + O2 > 2 MgO
5) 2 HgO > Hg + O2
