You worked hard to create the best rehabilitation plan to slow the physical deterioration in your multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease patient, only to be derailed by the patient’s “bad day” or disease complications. Therapy becomes bogged down, you are frustrated, and the patient

is frustrated and becoming less engaged in their therapy. You feel like you are losing control. Shelly denes, PT, C/NdT, has been in your shoes. She has worked with patients with neuromuscular impairments for over 25 years, and knows first-hand what you are dealing with. She will share dozens of tips and techniques to overcome these challenges. Consider some of the new rehab equipment out there that will help your neurologically impaired clients to move safely and efficiently again. Consider carbon fiber Toe-Off Ankle Foot Orthotics that help patients who just tend to sink and cannot stay upright due to minimal or moderate hip and knee weakness. Utilizing equipment like this in new ways can help your clients stay upright even if they do NOT have foot drop. Small devices like this can make a world of difference in these patients. Working on prone lying can help with bed mobility and minimize hip flexion contractures with patients who you would not routinely think can go prone. Incorporating the orthopedic and sports medicine techniques that work on your younger clients can do wonders on those with neurological disorders as well. They have significant muscle tightness, trigger points and decreased mobility in their affected joints and do well with the more orthopedic-based therapies. Be the best rehabilitation resource for your patients by learning new tools, strategies and techniques that may be for sports medicine and effectively work in the neurological setting. This will transform your practice.

MicHel jAnet (sHelly) Denes, Pt, c/nDt, maintains a current clinical practice at the Rehab Institute of michigan, where she works with patients with multiple diagnoses including hemiplegia, neuromuscular disease, neuromuscular disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injuries. She has worked actively in various aspects of rehab for more than 25 years. She has a special interest and experience in advanced technology and strategies for complex clinical cases. She has been involved extensively with many advanced technologies including FeS cycling, FeS Neuroprosthetic devices, and innovative lower extremity orthotics to get patients moving again. Shelly has also been involved with the exoskeleton robotics for gait and gait training with patients with neurological injuries and other disabilities. Past professional experiences include insights gained while working in the inpatient, rehab, outpatient and the SCI recovery settings. Shelly graduated from The University of michigan in Physical Therapy and has a certification in Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NdT) in Adult Hemiplegia, completed at the Rehab Institute of Chicago. She has shared her insights with practicing professionals at seminars held across the country, at the annual michigan Physical Therapy Association meetings and through adjunct university work. Additionally, Shelly’s expertise has been presented through expert witness work, both nationally and locally.Speaker disclosures:

Financial: michel Janet (Shelly) denes has an employment relationship with the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery. She receives a speaking honorarium from PeSI, Inc.
