Mountain-Lion Hunting

Picture this - you’re out in the woods, jogging casually down a hiking trail, experiencing a sense of freedom. Just you, the woods, the fresh air, and an unknown predator stalking you, watching every move you make. You stop to tie your shoe for just a second, making the mistake that triggers the predator-prey instinct of your stalker. By bending over, you briefly resemble an animal on all four legs, and your stalker, a mountain lion, immediately pounces, beginning his fatal attack. This is a true, real-life incident that occurred in 2002 in Southern California. The underlying

reason for the attack -- the area was over-populated with mountain lions. Because an overabundance of these predatory creatures is dangerous to the human population as well as to the deer population, I believe there should be a regulated hunt for mountain lions.

A regulated hunt would control the large numbers of mountain lions and protect innocent joggers, campers, and naturalists. The mountain lion has no natural predator; if laws forbid people to hunt mountain lions, how can the population be controlled? The available natural food supply for the lions will be insufficient and attacks on human will continue.

Regulated mountain-lion hunts would also protect our dwindling deer population. A single mountain lion can eat two deer in a week (eight in a month). Just think how many deer are consumed in a year by a population of 1,000 mountain lions.

Mountain-lion hunting should not be a free-for-all. We should regulate it just like we do deer hunting. We want to control the population, not hunt them to extinction. In this way, the mountain lion and deer population would be stabilized.

I believe we should do what’s best for us,

the deer, and the mountain lions. We should have regulated mountain-lion hunts, that would control their numbers while protecting innocent human beings as well as the deer population.
