Vicar’s Viewpoint

Easter is unusually early this year, so the March edition of Outlook is also the Easter edition; a very happy Easter to you all.

Why does Easter matter? If you look around you as Easter approaches, you could be forgiven for thinking it’s all about holidays (a four-day weekend!) and eggs, rabbits and chickens. But no, the message of Easter is far deeper – and more important – than that.

We know that God sent His son Jesus Christ to live among us; we know that He was crucified and died; and that, on the third day, He rose to life again. This resurrection is what we celebrate on Easter Day: Alleluia! He is risen. This Gospel story is one of the most remarkable stories in human history.

It is remarkable that God actually chose to live on earth, as a man, in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus lived the whole human experience: as a child his parents were loving, but the whole family was forced to move to another country; as an adult he enjoyed the company of friends, and of strangers; he wept with grief at the death of a friend; he saw the effects of disease, of poverty and of repression on people; he knew what it was to be betrayed by someone he loved; he experienced a slow and painful death.

Yet Jesus was not just a man – he was also God. Along with the humanity went something beyond humanity, beyond our understanding, beyond the limits of time and space. The greatness of God defies human description: one attempt to describe Jesus on the cross, by Madeleine L’Engle, includes these words:

‘… where time and eternity come face to face; infinity and space meet in this place where crossbar and high upright hold the one in agony and in all Love’s embrace. The power in helplessness that was begun when all the brilliance of the flaming sun contained itself in the small confines of a child now comes to me …’

C S Lewis summarises this in what he calls ‘one grand miracle ….. that what is beyond all space and time, what is uncreated, eternal, came into nature, into human nature, descended into His own universe, and rose again, bringing nature up with Him.’

So next time we acknowledge that we don’t ourselves have all the answers; when we allow the possibility of some things being bigger than us; or find ourselves wondering what life is really all about, the Easter story has to be the place to start – ‘the grand miracle’. Alleluia! With every blessing, Alex

From a letter from Elaine Catterall:

Elaine, Julia, Tristan and Verity would like to say a sincere ‘thank you’ to all whose kind messages, cards and letters gave them support and strength following John’s sudden death. They are also grateful to all who attended his funeral, to mourn John’s passing but also to celebrate a happy life, spent surrounded by family and friends. Thank you so much.

Editorial meanderings

My meanderings this month, gentle readers, are musical so any readers who do not like music will find no point in meandering with me.

‘Music has charms to soothe the savage breast.’ Thus wrote William Congreve in one of his plays. Now, as someone whose breast is frequently savage, I regularly need to be soothed by music and it is therefore a huge part of my life: classical music is my greatest love, very closely followed by jazz and blues. I have a great love of the human voice, particularly opera, particularly women, particularly sopranos, particularly mezzo and most particularly colaratura like my beloved Lucia Popp. The love of operatic women's voices is something I apparently share with many people but particularly Richard Strauss - hence the wonderful trio from Der Rosencavalier to which I am listening as I type—Renee Fleming, Frederica Von Stade and Kathleen Battle - tears are starting. Mozart is my musical god and Lucia Popp (very sadly no longer with us) was one of his angels.

There are, of course, many good younger sopranos on the scene and, as always with the world of music, appearing and developing constantly, though I am still playing Cecilia Bartoli, Joan Sutherland, Kiri Te Kanawa, Frederica Von Stade, Barbara Hendricks, Renee Fleming and others of the older generation (even Maria Callas). Recently watched on DVD an excellent Glyndebourne 2006 production of Cosi fan tutti with the sublime Soave sia il vento trio Nicolas Rivenq, Miah Persson and Anke Vondung. Never heard of them before.

I even have a great love of some of the current female singers of 'popular' music. Adele is wonderful and Ellie Goulding excellent. I went into a charity shop recently and a young girl was serving behind the counter. She had a radio on and a female voice was singing in 'contemporary fashion'. I had heard the song on YouTube but wasn’t quite sure about it, and happened to say to this little girl ‘Is that Ellie Goulding?’, to which she said with some amazement, ‘Yes’. I thought, ‘Oh, dear. Poor girl. She probably won’t listen to her again.’ Sorry, Ellie, didn’t do you any favours there.

In a desperate move, aged just sixteen, to get out of the Welsh coal mines, I moved to London to try and live with my mother. Never lived with her before. Didn't work. Didn't get on. We did, however, manage to survive each other's company for nearly two years, after which time I went back to Wales and worked for the Forestry Commission for a few months whilst waiting to be accepted by the Royal Navy. During my stay with my mother, I became friends with a really good bunch of London lads who were very much into 'modern jazz' (even though Elvis Presley had just hit the scene). Our musical gods were Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Errol Garner, Oscar Peterson, Thelonius Monk, Ahmad

Jamal, the MJQ, Dave Brubeck with Paul Desmond (greatest sax player of them all for my money). I still play a lot of Brubeck. Then I found the Blues - Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Huddy Ledbetter, Fred McDowell, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, etc.. But for me the greatest of them all was Sam 'Lightnin’ Hopkins, a Texas bluesman with a great husky blues voice and immense guitar ability.

To wind up these musical meanderings, I will relate how I was introduced to classical music. In the early 1960s a Welsh friend of mine from childhood got a place at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama to study piano. He also became a timpanist. He knew I had just left the navy and intended to settle in London and contacted me to see if I would like to move into a flat with him and some others, mainly girls, which was a deciding factor and I did. On one visit to the Guildhall, my friend and I approached a girl sitting on her own in the sort of student common room looking at some sheet music on her lap. She had long, abundant, slightly untidy, hair and crossed gangly legs and a big smile. She was introduced to me by my friend as 'Jackie'. She was later to become Jacqueline du Pré. Yes, gentle readers, I actually held the hand that held the bow that played the definitive performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto (if I knew then what I know now, I would never have washed it again).

One day my friend asked me if I would like to meet him one morning at the college and go to an orchestral rehearsal and have lunch afterwards. I turned up and my friend took me to this big rehearsal room where I sat at the back. I knew nothing of classical music. I watched with fascination as these young students of both sexes and all shapes and sizes and instruments turned up and babbled and laughed and created this cacophony of tuning up. My friend was on timps. In came a young conductor who chatted amiably to them for a while. He then tapped and raised his baton and the room fell silent. Then this music just entered my soul.

Pink Feet above your head in Mellor? Avian Correspondent

A birding note from Pat and Anne O'Mara:-

Apart from the birds in our gardens there are other birds to look out for: geese for example. We're all used to the flocks of Canada Geese skimming our roofs with their raucous calls but more interesting are Pink Footed Geese which fly much higher and have a softer, chattering call to keep the skeins together. In autumn the pink footed

geese leave their breeding grounds in East Greenland and the interior of Iceland and the ice and snow for our more clement weather and head for Eastern Scotland, but large numbers come further south and stop around Martinmere near Southport.

When some of the geese get fed up with carrots they follow the Goyt and Etherow on the way to the Wash and feast on turnip tops. That's where we come in because they can be seen, often in skeins of over a hundred, flying over Mellor Church, Kinder Scout and even up Marple Bridge High Street on their way to the seaside. Keep an eye out especially as many will return in the spring!

Recent interesting sightings are: Lapwings and Golden Plover on Ludworth Moor/ Gun Road; a Barn Owl flying around the Log Farm near Pole Lane/Broadhurst Plantation; Goosanders on Lake by “Archaeological Dig”; and a pair of Great Crested Grebes are back at Roman Lakes. Hurray.

What is the Church Electoral Roll? Eileen Benford-Miller

In the Church of England, it is your Parish's register of electors; it is the list of those qualified to vote at the annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) where the elections take place for the Parochial Church Council (PCC), and the Deanery Synod. It is also our membership list, the number we can count upon as committed members of St Thomas’.

Our electoral roll officer is Eileen Benford-Miller. The roll is revised annually and the new roll is reported at the APCM, which this year is to be held in April. If your name is not on the current roll and you would like it to be added please contact Eileen (427 4311) or the Parish Office (484 5079) for an application form, or download one from the church website at www.mellorchurch.org. They need to be completed and returned to Eileen or the Parish Office no later than 24 March.

Sunday 6 March is Mothering Sunday: at 10am we are having a special church service to say thank you to all our Mums (and Grannies, Nans and Aunties, and Mother Church). It will be a service for all ages, with some good hymns. Please put it in your diary, and send out the invitations now!

It will not be a communion service—however, there will be a communion as normal at 8.30am that day.

Theatre Refreshments During the Theatre on the Hill production of 84 Charing Cross Road, the bar will be open before the show from 7.30 pm, as will the kitchen serving coffee, tea and cake refreshments.

An optimist thinks this is the best of all worlds. A pessimist fears this may be true.

Sweet & Lowe Kareen Dayes

Can there be anywhere better to live in the British Isles than Mellor? We reside in a lovely part of the world, barely a single house being more than a stone's throw from beautiful countryside. We have a thriving Sports Club, several hostelries offering a variety of delicacies to tantalize our taste-buds and an archeological dig to steep us in history.

Then to cap it all we have 'Sweet & Lowe'. For the eighth consecutive year running Mellor Church was packed to the rafters for an 'evening of song featuring Tom and Jennifer Lowe' ably supported by Mellor Community Choir, conductor Mary Hoult and accompanist Martyn Parkes. It is hard to believe that such a small catchment area boasts such a great host of amazing talent. The concert followed its usual format from classical excerpts, songs from the shows, through to the more contemporary. It was interspersed with delightful touches of humour which goes to make this sort of evening so enjoyable. Can we be fortunate enough to entice our superstars back next year for a ninth consecutive time? If so, I will definitely be booking my ticket.

A final word of thanks and ‘well done’ to 'The Friends' who organize the myriad of events for us throughout the year. This concert alone raised a considerable sum and is one of the largest contributors towards funds raised. 100% of all the profits go into helping to keep the Parish Centre alive.

Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebratory Peal Her Majesty's 90th birthday this year will be celebrated by the bell-ringers in their inimitable style with a special Saturday peal. Boosted by the reception of previous mass rings, the veteran campanologists are again inviting all the village to participate. The 90-minute ring will coincide with the monarch's official birthday on 11th June.

As in the past, everyone wishing to take part in the musical treat will be asked to book in advance - stating, if possible, which year of HM's life they would like to commemorate - by personally ringing the bell for one minute. The tower kings are hoping this momentous event will trigger similar events in churches throughout the realm as the Queen's loyal subjects join in her birthday celebrations - highlighted on her special day in June by the Trooping of the Colour ceremony in London.

A £5 charity donation guarantees your slot in the tower and will include a cup of the infamous bell-ringers' soup. At the moment, the bell-ringers are working on how would-be chimers will be able to book their place online - but in the meantime put the date in your diary and monitor Outlook for further detailed announcements.

Editor’s address to his troops in the field I feel it is high time that we at head-office acknowledged the work carried out by the stalwart team of Outlook printers, deliverers and subscription collectors. These unsung heroes who, in all weathers and through all equipment failures, ensure that our readers are supplied with their monthly dose of intellectual stimulus, spiritual sustenance and general parish and church news and information.

Being married to one of these intrepid members of the community, I am aware of the time and hours they put in to distribute the magazine and collect payment of the annual subscription from our blissfully happy and highly intelligent and discerning readership. Thank you 'troops in the field' from your commander and his editorial staff, for all the time and legwork you put in to this endeavour. The thoughts of the editorial staff are always with you as we sit at our computer keyboards. Our community is so much the richer for your endeavours. Your editor and his devoted team attempt to be worthy of your efforts. Whether we succeed or not is another matter!

P.S. A big thank you also, of course, to our devoted readership.

One Voice Tim Lowe

An initiative that has brought together all the faith groups in the Armed Services has close links to Mellor Church. Flight Lieutenant Harriet Tadikonda, who was married in the church, gathered together Hindu, Sikh, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and atheist service men and women to sing with one voice recording the song ‘Path to Peace’. A documentary about the project is being filmed by Chris Mann, who has the MannMade Studios in the Parish Centre. The service personnel are backed by the Military Wives Choir and a video, which includes a shot from Cobden Edge, can be found by Googling ‘path to peace music you tube’ or via the link - youtu.be/7TNWNg6gLdQ

Power of Prayer - Part 3 Alison Dowdeswell

It seems an obvious statement but prayer is not always about asking for things. It says this in the Communion service we use in Church every Easter: “It is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places, to give you thanks and praise.”

Have you ever tried that, to say thank you to God, not only for His blessings but also for troubles? I am going to mention a book I’ve written about before. It is called “The Hiding Place”, which was written by a Dutch Christian called Corrie Ten Boom. She was living in Holland, during the Second World War, when it was occupied by the Nazis. She helped to run an underground group that rescued Jews. Sadly, the group was betrayed by an informer. Corrie and her sister Betsie ended up in a concentration camp. How could anyone hold onto their faith in such an evil place? Well, the two sisters did their best to do just that. Every night they would meet with other believers to share a time of prayer. One night, Corrie, looking at a Bible a nurse had smuggled in, read these words: “Give thanks in all circumstances.” (Thessalonians 5 :16-18). Corrie’s immediate response was: “What do I have to give thanks to God for here?” Betsie replied: “What about the bible in your hands? What about your friends here? Thank you Lord Jesus”. And so Betsie went on, until she said: ”Thank you for the fleas in the workroom.” Corrie protested that she was not going to say thank you for fleas! But the very next day Betsie rushed up to her sister. She had overheard a guard remark that he refused to inspect the workroom more often because he hated fleas! This meant that Betsie had more time to tell the other women about her faith and the promise of eternal life through our Redeemer. So, I say once again: “I believe in the power of prayer.”

Cat of Nine Lives? A man goes on a two-month business trip to the United States and leaves his cat with his brother. Three days before his return he calls his brother.

Brother 1: So how is my cat doing?

Brother 2: He's dead.

Brother 1: He's dead! What do you mean he's dead? I loved that cat. Couldn't you think of a nicer way to tell me? I'm leaving in 3 days. Couldn’t you have been a bit more thoughtful? You could have told me today that she got out of the house or something. Then when I called before I left you could have told me we found her but she is up on the roof and we're having trouble getting her down. Then when I called you from the airport you could have told me that the fire department was there and scared her off the roof and the cat died when it hit the ground.

Brother 2: I'm sorry...you're right...that was insensitive I won't let it happen again.

Brother 1: Alright, alright, forget about it. Anyway, how is Mum doing?

Brother 2: She's up on the roof and we're having trouble getting her down.

News from Rose Queen Lucy Thank you so much to everyone who came to our Threetles event. It was a fantastic night and I had loads of fun! We raised over £1500 which is excellent!

And then, on 20th March, New Mills Cottage Cakery is running a cake decorating workshop including:

- icing cakes

- piping

- sugarpaste work

- sweet treats

This is just in time to make your Easter cake extra special! After all your hard work we will treat you to afternoon tea. Tickets £10 for adults and £5 for under-18s available from the Parish Centre.

Letter to the Editor Dear Guy,

I have just received my copy of the February Outlook magazine which reminded me that I had intended to write to you earlier in December just to say thank you for your humorous and interesting issues during 2015. I must admit to being an avid reader of each issue from cover to cover (don’t mention this to the literary police) and thoroughly enjoyed the articles by Nick Sanders and Alison Dowdeswell together with your meanderings. I noticed that in the February issue you mentioned your friendship with Anthony Newley and this brought back wonderful memories of the show ‘Stop the world….’ I’m not sure if my aging memory serves me well but I think it had its premiere in Manchester and Anne and I being captivated when we saw it at the Palace Theatre. It was so fresh and new and so 1960s. Was it Anna Quayle who co-starred? Thanks for the memory, may you long continue to amuse and educate us.

Best wishes

Stan Bannister.

Dear Stan,

Thank you so much for your kind email and comments about Outlook. I plough a rather lonely furrow sometimes with the magazine, doing my best to be all things to all people, so it is much appreciated when an Outlook reader takes the trouble to assure you that you are getting something right occasionally. In fairness, I do get some kind and favourable comments from people who approach me personally and from my 'foot-soldiers' on the ground - but to have one in print! I shall sleep with it under my pillow.

Thank you again. Ed. P.S. Yes. It was Anna Quayle.

In January our well-attended meeting was entertained by Mrs Chris Belton who brought an amazing selection of old toys which reminded us of our childhood. It was somewhat unnerving to discover how much we had forgotten, or perhaps not bothered to remember.

Our social strollers will not be meeting until the weather improves a little, but the lunch group goes ahead; more of that next month. Our speaker in March is Mr Alan Hayhurst on “Cheshire Murders”. Please don’t be too frightened to join us!

Tea and Friendship Nancy Cloughley

February Tea and Friendship seemed to be a particularly jolly one. The chat never stopped and friends moved around between the tables keeping conversations going and starting ever new topics. Gloria let us know that it was her birthday and brought a large box of chocolates which she made sure disappeared. Oh, dear! Has she started a new craze? Yet more new friends appeared and we hope they will return.

Just remember to phone Sheila on 449 0282 if you need a lift. We look forward to seeing you.

Tinkerbell March as they say, enters like a lion but leaves as a lamb and Tinkerbell knows that the advent of longer sunlit days means only one thing - Spring cleaning. The bell-ringers' hero last week met some of the parish's Holy Dusters and got stuck in with their routine polishing of the church's treasures.

He still can't believe his luck that he has escaped the dark caverns of the Ludworth peppermint mine and is more than welcome to repay the bell-ringers' kind offer of sanctuary by sweeping away the odd cobweb. Tinkerbell comes from a long line of equine dirt-shifters as his mother out of the Arkle stable was dubbed Sparkle and won several Maiden Sweepstakes despite carrying top weight. Tinkerbell's fluffy mane is very useful in dusting the pews of St Thomas and of course he has no fear of dark ecclesiastical corners having spent so much of his youth in the underground hell of the Rowarth colliery.

As you can see, Tinkerbell has made lots of new friends and is looking forward to making a special appearance at this year's Church Fete in the soon-to-be-resurrected Donkey Derby. However, Tinkerbell's former cruel owner, a man with Irish connections, is still offering a reward for his recapture and the little pony has to live under the shadow of immediate incarceration so if you see him, be careful who you tell. Remember: death is a weed and requires no rein.

Cobden Edge Cross Marian Thompson

What’s happened to the cross? Many people enjoying the walks around Cobden Edge have noticed something missing – severe winds last December tore off the top of the large cross sited there. The cross was placed on the hilltop by Churches Together in Marple Area in 1970; it’s been a popular land-mark ever since. The Churches have agreed to replace the cross and this major work is now being costed. An appeal will then be launched to restore this local landmark. Watch this space!

Sainsbury’s School Vouchers Lorraine Forbes

Sainsbury’s have just started offering their vouchers for 2016. Mellor Primary School have collected these vouchers for several years and have been able to redeem them for many useful items of equipment. If you would like to donate your vouchers you can hand them in to school or you can give them to me (they can be left in the Parish Centre for me to collect) and I will ensure that they are delivered.

Go Bananas or Nuts. Judith Shiel Life is normally a frenzy of activity and we madly rush from one essential thing to the next (yes, I do remember what it was like to rush for the 8-something train via a crowded car park). However it’s good to pause and think about a few topics when possible and Lent is a good time to do so. One such topic is how we shop. Again, it’s usually a rush as the days of pottering from one small shop to the next for each individual item has passed. However what we buy has a great impact on the lives of many small farmers in the developing world. It is Fairtrade Fortnight this year from 29 February to 13 March, and the Fairtrade Foundation is focusing on food security. Many small farmers growing the commodities we take for granted have to devote all their land to growing cash crops, and if the world price falls, they suffer. Also they don’t have space to grow food crops for their own use. Fair Trade certification guarantees a basic price for commodities, and if the international price rises, some extra money which communities can invest in food to eat, improving their land and growing different crops. Small farmers can then not only provide food for their families, but education and medical care as well. So it would be good to take a little time while shopping to look for the Fair Trade logo. Or how about having a Fair Trade breakfast, using tea/coffee/bananas/jam or honey? And if you are dashing through Stockport station early on Saturday 5 or 12 March, look out for a pop-up stall, and possibly a free banana. Meanwhile, see www.fairtrade.org.uk for more information, or the Traidcraft website (www.traidcraft.co.uk) to see what is available. If you see anything you would like me to order, please let me know ([email protected]).

Prayer for the Month

Thought for the Month

Day after day? I can handle a bright burst of new enthusiasm, short lived as the spring sunshine. It fits my diary. I’m free on Tuesday, seven to ten. Or Sunday afternoon. And when it’s over I can move to something else. Day after day, the long grind in low gear up the steep hill of daily living, daily giving. I look for short cuts to bypass all the hassle. They’re not marked. Day after day. The only way. Then suddenly the realisation comes. Your presence with me. Quietly, consistently. Yours too the daily walk, the patient taking of the narrow road. I ask, “Day after day?” I see you nod and say, “I’m with you. Day after day.” Let’s make a start, Lord.

Eddie Askew: ‘No Strange Land’

Mankind's moral sense is not a strong beacon light, radiating outward to illuminate in sharp outline all that it touches. It is, rather, a small candle flame, casting vague and multiple shadows, flickering and sputtering in the strong winds of power and passion, greed and ideology. But brought close to the heart and cupped in one's hands, it dispels the darkness and warms the soul.

James Q Wilson (1931 - 2012): 'The Moral Sense'

The Departed

We remember before God and commend to His love and mercy

We offer our love and sympathy to all who mourn them

A Nun’s Prayer Lord, Thou knowest better than I know myself that I am growing older and will someday be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody’s affairs. Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy.

With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but Thou knowest Lord that I want a few friends at the end. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They are increasing, and love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by.

I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of others’ pains, but help me to endure them with patience. I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humility and a lessening cocksureness when my memory seems to clash with the memories of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasion-ally I may be mistaken.

Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a Saint - some of them are so hard to live with - but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places, and talents in unexpected people.

And, give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so. Amen.
