Powerful Optical Transport

Modular Access-Metro-Core PlatformsApollo leverages a common set of blades that can be used interchangeably across a family of small, medium, and large platforms to drive economies-of-scale and ease-of-planning to create transport solutions that are optimized from the Access through the Metro to the Regional Core. These blades feature advanced capabilities and a packaging density to ensure that the networks they power are at the cutting edge of competiveness.

Optimized Regional and Metro 100G CoherentApollo's best-in-class long-haul 100 Gbps high-capacity coherent links lead the industry for distance without regeneration, which they achieve through superior Soft Decision FEC algorithms, as well as hybrid EDFA/Raman and single stage variable amplifiers, optimized for maximum reach.

Apollo also offers a unique metro 100G blade optimized for the aggressive cost-performance expectations of the metro segment. This cutting-edge blade is based on a 100G CFP coherent pluggable that directly embeds OSNR measurements.

Optimized Regional and Metro 100G Coherent

Dense, Economical Metro PlatformTo accommodate the metro 100G blade — or any Apollo blade — Apollo offers the OPT9603 as a small, flexible platform, designed especially for economical Metro and Edge applications. The ultra-dense TR10_12 blade is ideally suited for this platform. It features an industry-leading six SFP+ 10G tunable transponders, enabling Apollo to deliver eighteen 10G transponders in a 2U box.

Apollo's metro solutions are also supported by the Artemis passive optics platform, which requires no electrical power and can be deployed in extreme outside plant environments.

Apollo OPT9603 Platform

Edge-to-Edge Optical EncryptionTo protect against the interception of enterprise data by passively tapping into an optical fiber, Apollo provides Layer 1 optical encryption that can be applied to Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and TDM client services. Data is secured from the point at which it enters the network until it leaves, using a 256-bit key, which is the highest level of the Advanced Encryption Standard.

Apollo Layer 1 Optical Encryption

Spectrum Efficiency and Routing FlexibilityApollo is fully committed to the efficient use of optical spectrum. A universal switching fabric provides an ODU cross-connect—which, in the future, will also support packet switching—to optimize grooming of multiple services onto DWDM optical wavelengths.

For maximum flexibility in creating end-to-end light paths, Apollo provides full colorless, directionless, and contentionless ROADMs, with different port count models optimized for Metro and Regional networks. Moreover, Apollo ROADMs support flexible, or gridless, spectrum allocation, which is essential for future-proofing networks to transport emerging higher-capacity 400G and 1T signals.

Apollo Gridless Wavelength Routing

Intelligent Dynamic Service RestorationMaking further use of the flexibility of the switching fabric and optical ROADMs, Apollo leverages an intelligent control plane and inter-node GMPLS signaling to provide both ASON service-level and WSON wavelength-level dynamic restoration. These supplement automatic protection switching and are particularly useful for guaranteeing service level agreements in complex mesh networks.

Apollo's powerful optical transport capabilities ensure end-to-end transport services that go furthest and fastest, with the greatest flexibility and highest availability, on an optimized, cost-effective network.

Integrated Packet Functionality

Integrated Carrier EthernetCarrier Ethernet, which extends enterprise LANs into the Wide Area Network, has typically been supported by specialized equipment designed to process Layer 2 (L2) packet protocols, which, in turn, interfaced to separate Layer 1 (L1) equipment for network-wide transport. With the ongoing growth of data services, this dual equipment approach is no longer sustainable.

Apollo Packet-Optical Integration

Apollo integrates L1 optical transport services and L2 Carrier Ethernet services in a single platform under common network management. This simplifies network builds and operation, and reduces the Total Cost Of Ownership.

Apollo offers a dense single-slot L2 muxponder blade that supports combinations of 1GbE and 10GbE/OTU2 ports, with the following powerful packet capabilities:

MEF-defined E-Line, E-LAN, E-Tree, and E-Access Carrier Ethernet services

Statistical multiplexing for grooming and efficient transport of multiple 1GbE and 10GbE ports onto a single 10GbE port

Integrated MPLS-TP switching and connection- oriented transport

Inter-card connectivity for automatic protection switching and fan out

Apollo also provides additional value by integrating these packet capabilities with OTN:

Built-in colored OTN interfaces, eliminating the need for separate transponders for packet traffic

A common view of L1/L2 parameters and controls to the LightSoft NMS for simple and efficient network management of combined transport and packet services

Extended reach with G/EFEC for amplified and non-amplified networks

Use of OTN performance monitoring as a trigger for MPLS-TP restoration

MPLS-TP Transport Advantages

A particular advantage of Apollo is its selection of MPLS-TP, which is widely regarded as the optimal protocol to implement Carrier Ethernet based on its multiple value-added features, such as:

Scalability to handle thousands of packet traffic instances

Guaranteed SLAs using deterministic bi-directional connection-oriented paths

High reliability with 50ms fast re-route automatic protection switching

Transport grade OAM for performance monitoring and fault management

LightApp SDN Services AutomationLightApp provides services automation using network virtualization and Software Defined Network programming capabilities. It extends control to end users for bandwidth-on-demand, service scheduling, and automated congestion relief.

With Bandwidth-on-Demand, LightApp allocates network resources dynamically, as needed. This allows both customers and external applications to use services only when they are really required, and to vary the allocation of resources to applications, according to actual needs. This saves network resources and dramatically improves network utilization.

LightApp leverages LightSoft’s ’Path Finder‘ capabilities to create paths for both point-to-point and mesh topologies, and to eliminate them when no longer needed. The paths created are automatically provisioned across all relevant layers (packet, OTN, WDM) to achieve the optimal configuration.

With the Services Scheduling feature, LightApp provides a calendar-like solution to reserve resources in advance, allowing explicit scheduling of a network service (start time, end time, specific endpoints, required bandwidth) for a specific amount of time. This responds to the requirement that services are required only at certain times and for predictable durations. For example, with cyclic pattern network loads during the daylight hours, most of the traffic is generated by trade and industry users, while there is far less traffic from residential areas. In the evening, in contrast, most of the traffic is residential, while the industrial traffic declines. LightApp Services Scheduling can adjust resources to deal with such cyclic loads.

With the Congestion Relief feature, Light App avoids network traffic congestion and bottlenecks that cause service interruption. The Congestion Relief algorithm tracks performance monitoring (PM) notifications and traffic overload alarms. Then, according to predefined thresholds, it anticipates or detects any overload that might adversely affect the Quality of Service and automatically reallocates network resources for the current network load by rerouting tunnels and services to the best available path.

LightPath Network RestorationLightPath combines policy-driven service priorities with peer-to-peer signaling among Apollo nodes, to execute dynamic restoration at both the service and light path levels. It provides a top-down network management perspective to work with the Apollo-based ASON and WSON capabilities. 5www.ecitele.com
