Some Lake Tahoe Facts Located in the Sierra Nevada, west of Carson City, Nevada
First seen by European John Fremont in 1844
Surface Elevation of 6225 ft
Largest Alpine freshwater lake in the US; 22 miles long by 12 miles wide; 191 sq. miles surface area; formed by extinct volcano Pluto flow blocking north end
Depth up to 1,645 ft (second to Crater Lake); avg depth 1000 ft
26th largest lake by volume in world
Formed ~2 million years ago, modern lake shaped during Ice Ages
Known for clarity of the water & panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides = PHOTO OPS!!
Home to ski resorts, summer outdoor recreation, and tourist attractions (casinos on Nevada side)
