What do audits have to do with – Large Data Sets?

• Both audits and disaster recovery require IT professionals to adhere to IT best practices.

• The biggest difference is one you are held accountable by an external audit team and the other you are held accountable by your boss.

• Both require risk mitigation. • Both require testing.• Both require the IT professional to do a point in time data recovery.

Large Data Sets – Tape vs. Cloud

• If we look at tape first, specifically LTO-5 tapes, we should consider several things.

– How long the backup will take?– How many tapes will you need for a full and incremental

backup?– Where are you going to put those tapes when your backup

has completed?

In today’s discussion we are going to compare and contrast the difference between storing 2TB of data to tape versus cloud.

Page 7: Over 2TB? Best Practices for Offsite Backup and DR With Large Data Sets

Large Data Sets – Tape Backup• A 2TB backup using LTO-5, uncompressed, will require 2

tapes for every full backup.

• If the daily rate of change of that data is 25%, we are looking at an additional 500 GB of data that needs to be transferred to tape every day.

• If you are limiting your failure domain, we will swap out those tapes daily, thus leaving you with 8 LTO-5 tapes used every week.

• Being fearful of having your primary and secondary copy of data on site, you have taken the precaution to have your tapes brought offsite on a daily basis.

Large Data Sets – Tape Recovery• Now, on day-6 you encounter a disaster and you need to recover your

data.

• Your IT team now makes an emergency call to your offsite data vault and has an out of cycle tape delivery made to your office.

• You are now 5 hours into the recovery. One hour to diagnose the issue and 4 hours to have the tapes brought back in.

• First you load up your last full backup and restore your 2TB of data.

• The recovery process incremental and then overlay your tapes until you reach tape 6 and then, at this point in time, you are have recovered your data.

Tape Recovery – Post Mortem: Time• This Example Tape Recovery took 15 hours.

• 1 hour to diagnose the problem and figure out what tapes you need to recall

• 4 hours for the tape to be recalled• 4.5 hours to restore the full backups• 5 hours to overlay the incremental backups to

bring you back to your RPO ( Recovery Point Objective).

Tape Recovery – Post Mortem: CostTape Recovery Costs:

•LTO-5 Tape Cost - $30 * 8 =$240 / week•Tape Drive Cost - $3,000•Tape Offsite (8 tapes) charge = $20 / Month•Backup Software - $15,000•Emergency Recovery Charge - $300•Data Center Costs - $200 / Month•Hardware Support Costs - $600/year•Software Support costs - $3,000/year•Server Engineering time - $20,000/year•Tape Risk - significant

Tape – Common IssuesCommon issues when dealing with tape:

•Tape header corruption due to tape drive failure•Tape media stretched or snapped•Media surface damage•Reformatting or erasure of tape•Overwriting of tape headers•Tape backup software corruption•Random CRC Errors reported•Unable to catalogue media

“Having to go to my bosses’ office and tell him that I can’t recover the data, is not a conversation I want to have.”

Cloud Disaster Recovery – vs. Tape “So Rich, what are the biggest differences between using tape, disk, or cloud for offsite backup & DR?

Cloud Backup – Can it work? The 2 types of cloud backup: SMB vs. Enterprise-grade

Example 1: SMB Backup

The Math: 100GB/day2TB initial backup = 20 days6% daily change rate = 120GB

120GB daily incremental = 28.8 hours

Does not work.

Example 2: Enterprise-grade Cloud Backup

The Math: 5TB/day2TB initial backup = 9.6 hours6% daily change rate = 120GB

120GB daily incremental = <1 hour

Works!
