PROJECT BOOKOver 65 years shaping pathways underground
RAILWAY
OSSA, founded in 1952, is a leading company in the underground construction sector specializing in four business areas:
Construction, Energy, Mining and Services.
Both in underground excavations by traditional method (NATM) and in tunneling with TBM, OSSA is a solid underground
works partner for important industrial and construction groups internationally. At OSSA we are highly commited to
Quality, Health and Safety, and Environment, and we invest in Research and Development Projects at an international
level. We promote a culture of respect and teamwork among our team.
OSSA has vast recent experience in high speed railway tunnels with over 75 km of high speed rail tunneling projects,
leading the Spanish market in this specialty, and also in underground power plants, having built over fifteen underground
plants with some of the largest underground caverns in the world. As a recent highlight, we have built more than 10 km
of tunnels for the Santiago de Chile Metro.
Internationally OSSA has executed works in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Brasil and
Guatemala and is recently focusing its tendering activity in North America, Central America, Asia and Great Britain.
After 65 years of success, our strategy is to continue expanding internationally, and to support large civil engineering and
mining industry clients at all levels, contributing our vast technical expertise and our equipment fleet, while prioritizing
health and safety and innovation in all our projects.
PRESENTATION
SAFETYSafety is OSSA’s main asset from the time when its operations began, demanded by the specialisation required for the works carried out underground.
The company’s staff have a high degree of professionalism and specialisation, which has been achieved after many years of training and the transfer of know how. Working in confined spaces with the presence of gas, dust, noise, low visibility and the use of explosives means that OSSA’s safety department is the most relevant in the company.
The use of cutting-edge, innovative techniques in the field of underground works requires the continuous training of the company’s human resources.

The works consist of the execution of the track bed for the High Speed Madrid-Galicia line, comprising 4.96 km of double track and 1.44 km of single track. The main works carried out were two viaducts: Requejo, with a length of 2.1 km; Los Pedregales, at 1.42 km. In addition the Pedralba de la Pradería Tunnel has been executed in the double-track section, with a length of 1,700 m including the false tunnels (1,580 m of bored tunnel) and an open cross-section of 86 m2. The Requejo Tunnel has also been executed, 2.4 km in length, for single track, with a cross-section of 75 m2, and including the construction of two false tunnels of 20 m each at the entrance and exit and another of 40 m in the middle. The excavation process for the tunnels follows the principles of the the New Austrian Method (NATM). Areas where the terrain is of high resistance have been excavated by drill and blast and those where it is of poorer quality with mechanical excavation.

The main support elements used both in the tunnels and in the evacuation galleries are: shotcrete, Mn-16 expansion rock bolts, type TH-29 and HEB-160 trusses and 150x150x6 mm steel mesh.

The works consisted of constructing a track platform 9,440 m in length for the high-speed line in the section between La Robla and the Pajares Tunnels.
The project involved building 3 viaducts with a length of 817 m and 6 double-track tunnels with a total length of 4,204 m. The main part of the work was the tunnels, which are: Castro (493 m), Alba (1,057 m), Peredilla (723 m), Buen Suceso I (697 m), Buen Suceso II (251 m) and Nocedo de Gordón (620 m). The tunnels have cross-sections of 85 and 90 m2. The excavation was carried out using the New Austrian Method. Explosives were used in the geologically favourable areas and mechanical equipment in the more unfavourable areas.

Work involved the construction of a downhill entrance gallery with a 6.2% slope and 5,466 m in length. Besides the excavation of two parallel tunnels of 4,166 m and 3,189 m in length and 56 m² gauge, a cavern of 107 m in length and 426 m² gauge was undertaken. All these works belong to the León-Asturias high-speed line.Except for the tunnels that were excavated with TBM, the other galleries were drilled & blasted. To cover the parallel tunnels, 600 and 500 mm reinforced-concrete ring segments measuring 1.5 m in length were used, placed on 6+1 rings.Given the nature of the site and the size of the gallery, an in-depth pre-analysis of the site was undertaken. The main works were: 1,072,922 m3 of tunnel excavation, 39,945 m3 of cavern excavation, 79,512 m3 of varying-gauge gallery excavation, 14,365 m³ of steel fibre reinforced concrete, 122,216 ml of 32 mm-diameter bolts, 101,333 ml of 22 m fibreglass bolts, 124,027 ml of Swellex MN12 rockbolts, 3,500 ml of cable bolts, 1,032,700 kg of TH and HEB trusses and 69,115 ml of fibreglass-bolted covers.

Construction of the Madrid-Valencia high speed platform, the section length being 4.7 km The initial work involved the construction of the double-track rail tunnel known as the Tunnel del Regajal.Difficult construction from a geological and geotechnical point of view and because of the high environmental value of the area covered.Certain zones of the tunnel were built using micropile underpinning, double bolt covers and fitting of Gewi bolts. It was also necessary to undertake a water filtration test using epoxy and polyurethane-acrylic resins. The budget also included the following works: the false tunnels of the north and south entrance tunnels, measuring 23 m and 334 respectively. Also a 266 m-long viaduct and 2 overpasses.

The principal support units placed in the tunnels were: 35, 643 m³ of reinforced concrete with fibres, 41,585 m of bolts of Ø = 25 mm and 4 m in length, 198 TH-29 trusses and 153 units of HEB-160, 31,404 m² of wire mesh 100x100x6 mm.
In the less favourable areas of the tunnels, these were excavated with a central buttress and inverted arch and sealed at the front.
Tunnel waterproofing consisted of 163,159 m² of geotextile laminate >300 g/m² of polypropylene fibre and 143,584 m² PVC laminate 1.5- 2 mm H – 250 concrete covering.
