General Rules
1. This is a Standard Flower Show, planned and staged by A&M Garden Club complying with the
requirements of NGC, INC. policies and guidelines as printed in the 2007 Handbook for
Flower Shows and updates. This printed schedule is the Law of the Show.
2. Emphasis of the show is placed on growing, showing and designing with untreated fresh plant
material. Dried plant material is allowed and may be treated. Artificial flowers, foliage,
fruit or vegetables are not permitted in any of the Divisions. In the design and special
exhibit divisions only, plant material need not have been grown by exhibitor.
3. No plant on the State Conservation List may be used or exhibited in this show except under
these circumstances: Any exhibit containing a protected variety must be accompanied by a
card listing both botanical and common name of plant with certification that it was grown
from seed or by other methods by exhibitor, or that it was established wild on the
exhibitor’s property.
4. All members are encouraged to participate by entering horticulture or design. Members will
staff each section of Horticulture, and Design to answer questions from the public as well as
the entry to hand out pamphlets of club information and a condensed Flower Show Schedule.

5. A&M Garden Club Members may enter in:
Division I Horticulture, more than one exhibit per class, if there is a difference in color
or variety. Advance registration with Horticulture Chair for Collections and Displays,
Section L.
Division II Design, only one exhibit per class is allowed. Advance registration required
with Design Chair.
6. Exhibitor may enter more than one exhibit per class in the Horticulture Division, provided
each entry is of a different cultivar, type, or color.
7. Each entry must be passed by the Classification Chairman. Entry cards will be completed by
the committee in the Divisions. Entry cards in the Horticulture Division must be completed
by the exhibitor. The Classification Chairmen approve each exhibit for conformity having
also the right to mark “not for competition” when the exhibit is a late entry, has no show
quality or does not conform to the printed schedule.

Show quality is defined as: high quality, clean, no dirt or debris, no pests or evidence of
pests, no torn leaves, brown flowers, and pot is clean and free of labels.
8. Procedure for entries:
Horticulture Classification Chairman must review all horticulture entry cards for proper
identification and check for botanical naming as required (see HB Chap 4 pp.95-97 and
Chap 6). Chair must disqualify entry if not show worthy and if disease is detected on an
entry including the presence of insects. It should be immediately removed from the show
room. Chair assists participants with plant identification, initials entry cards to signify
approval and directs exhibitors to Entries Committee.
Design Classification Chairman must give completed entry card to exhibitor and
Placement Committee member directs designer to location. When designer has completed
design, Classification Committee member checks for conformance to schedule, and initials
entry cards to signify approval. If design fails to conform to schedule, designer must be
advised and why. Options available are either corrections may be made at this time only
OR if necessary adjustments are not made, the design is placed but entry card indicates
"not for competition". An exhibit so identified continues to contribute to the minimum
number per class, section, and/or division for Top Exhibitor Award to be placed.

8. Judging is done by NGC, Inc. Accredited Judges and based on the NGC, INC. Standard
System of Awarding according to the 2007 Handbook of Flower Shows. The scale of points
beginning on HB p. 297 -304 is to be used. Judges may write comments and point scores on
all Design Entry cards, but scores must not appear on blue ribbon winners’ cards until section
and division judging is completed and all competitive awards have been awarded. All 90+
exhibits are to be signed. Only those exhibits with a blue ribbon and 90+ are eligible for a
ribbon. (HB p. 29) Decision of the judges is final. Judges have the right to withhold awards
if not merited.
9. During the judging process, only the Judges, Clerks, the Horticulture and Design
Classification Chairman, and the Flower Show Chair are allowed in the judging area. Judges
may withhold award if not merited; decisions of the Judges are final.
10. The Flower Show committee will endeavor to protect all exhibits but is not responsible
for loss or damage of personal property.
11. Any question arising during judging or any decision concerning matters not covered
adequately in the Schedule will be decided by the Flower Show Chairman.

State Conservation Policy
Plants on the District V Conservation List must be grown by the exhibitor or legally obtained to be used in the Show
in any of the three Divisions. The exhibitor must include a card to accompany the entry stating the above to identify
the species.

Awards 1. Awards are determined by NGC, INC. Standard System of Awarding: (HB p. 5)
one 1st. place scoring 90 or above (blue),
one 2nd scoring 85 or above (red)
one 3rd scoring 80 or above (yellow) ribbon
one or more honorable mention (white) as merited, scoring 75 or above,
Awarded in each class or subclass.
One NGC, INC. or more Accredited Judges must sign and date entry cards of all Blue
or 90+ ribbon winners.
2. The Horticulture Division requires a minimum of 5 classes with a total of 20 or more
exhibits. No minimum number is required in each class. (HB p. 2).
3. The Design Division for this Standard Flower Show must have 5 classes of a minimum of 4
exhibits each totaling at least 20 exhibits. (HB p. 3)
4. A Standard Show may offer Top Exhibitor Awards. (HB p. 3).
5. Judges have the right to withhold awards if not merited.
Division I Horticulture Awards AWARD OF HORTICULTURE EXCELLENCE
DIVISION AWARD: one may be offered to a named exhibit judged the finest in
the entire Horticultural Division. It must score 95 or above. Rosette: Green,
Orange and Blue ribbons. (HB p. 43)
AWARD OF MERIT: Division I - Sections A,B,C,D
SECTION AWARD: up to five may be offered to a named blue ribbon exhibit of
outstanding specimens of fresh plant material, flower, fruit or foliage scoring
95 or above. Rosette: Orange ribbons. (HB p. 43)
THE ARBOREAL AWARD: Division I - Sections L, M
SECTION AWARD: two may be offered to the highest scoring blue ribbon winner
scoring 95 or above, One for tree specimen, one for a shrub specimen. Rosette: two values of
Green ribbons. (HB p. 43-44)
COLLECTOR’S SHOWCASE AWARD –Sections O, N Collections and Displays
SECTION AWARD: Two may be offered. One for collections- classes 57, 58, 59. One for
displays- classes 60, 61, 62. Rosette: brown and green ribbons to a blue ribbon exhibit scoring
95 or above. (HB p. 44)

GROWER’S CHOICE AWARD –Sections F, H, I
SECTION AWARD: Up to three (3) Growers Choice Awards may be offered and awarded, if
merited. This award is a rosette of dark green ribbons. Judging considerations for all
container-grown plants found on HB pp. 110-112. (National Gardener, Winter 2008)

Awarded by Horticulture Chair and Flower Show Chair
Division II Design Awards
The Design Division requires a minimum of 5 classes that must have a minimum of four exhibits;
a total of 20 exhibits.
Award of Design Excellence
One award to highest scoring exhibit in the entire Design Division entered by a single exhibitor.
Available to blue ribbon winners scoring 95 or higher. (HB pp. 45-46)
People Choice Awards
Community members viewing the show can vote for their
favorite design and favorite horticulture specimen in the
garden club divisions. This award will be given by the Keep
Brazos Beautiful and A&M Garden Club.

HORTICULTURE RULES FOR THE EXHIBITOR
1. All horticulture specimens must be fresh plant material grown by exhibitor. Exhibits must
have been in the possession of the exhibitor for no less than 90 days.
Exception: plants grown from seed, seedling, cuttings or immature transplants, bulbs,
tubers, corms or rhizomes.
Cut specimens of annuals, biennials and perennials must have been in exhibitor’s possession
from seeds, cuttings or immature plants and grown to maturity.
Bulbous blooms must have been in exhibitor’s possession from planting of bulb, tuber,
corm, rhizome or it must have been cared for as a mature plant at least 90 days.
Combination plantings must have been grown together for no fewer than 6 weeks.
Container grown plants must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for 90
days.
Combination plantings must have been grown together for no fewer than 6 weeks
have a 3x5 index card with plant names and location of plant within the exhibit.

2. Members may enter as many entries as they wish, provided there is a difference in:
genus, species, variety/cultivars, type size or color in each class.
3. Entry cards are obtained in advance from the Horticulture Chairman and are filled out in
pencil and in advance. Each entry card must have complete information of the exhibitor,
club and city name.
4. All entries must be named giving genus, species and/or variety/cultivar when available.
Only using the Common name is unacceptable. Example: cactus.
5. Container grown plants may be double potted and the maximum size of the container is
10” tall, 10” wide at top of container. Any plant too large will be not be placed in the
show.
6. Stem entries will be displayed in clear glass bottles with no labels. There should be no
foliage below the water line on cut specimens. A cut specimen is one stem, spike, bloom,
or spray, wedged with clear plastic wrap if needed in the neck of the bottle only. The
measure for length of cut specimens is a maximum of 30” from tip to the cut end. (HB p.
106)
7. Exhibits must be groomed and in clean containers. Fruits and vegetables will be displayed
on white paper plates.
8. No hanging plants or baskets due to limited space and lack of display requirements.

9. Annuals, biennials and perennials are expected to have foliage with the stem, if it is the
way the plant normally grows.
10. The Classification Chair has the right to subdivide classes as necessary and the right to
disqualify a plant due to condition, insect infestation, or disease.
11. Collection or Display entries are to be pre-registered with the Horticulture Entries
Chairman so that space is made available with the staging chair. Only 1 collection and 1
display per exhibitor. Space is limited.
12. Exhibits of self-multiplying and other multiple plants are permitted.
13. Plant material entered may not be altered by the application or treatment of oil,
commercial ‘shine” products, etc, that may artificially change the natural color and
texture.
14. Dish gardens and combination plantings should have a diagram included to show ID of
plants included.

SECTIONS N, O: COLLECTIONS AND DISPLAYS “Scarecrow”
Cut specimens must be displayed in a clear glass container, Minimum of 5 specimens is required
and each specimen must be in a separate bottle or container, but all the same type of container.
All specimens within the collection or display must be clearly labeled using correct binomial or
genus and cultivar names with the location within the collection or display noted on the card. All
entries are to be pre-registered with the Horticulture Entries Chairman so that space is made
available with the staging chair.
Allotted space: 20” x 20”
Specimens within a collection may consist of one family, plants with like characteristics,
different types or species within a genus, different cultivars within the genus or species.
SECTION N: Collections: “Cowardly Lion” *Eligible for Collector’s Showcase Award
Class 57: Collections of Cut Specimens, grown for foliage in the same family like ferns
Class 58: Collections of Container-Grown Plants, flowering plants in the same family. Each
specimen growing in its own identical, but separate container.
Class 59: Collections of Fruits, Vegetables, or Nuts (exhibit is all vegetables, all fruits, or all
nuts) exhibited on plates

DIVISION II- DESIGN Advance registration required for all design entries.
DESIGN RULES FOR THE EXHIBITOR
1. All policies are from the 2007 Handbook for Flower Shows. (p. 187-190) Design Scales of
Points (p. 303)
2. Designs must be pre-registered and the work of an individual. The designer must provide a
substitute if unable to participate.
3. Exhibitor may enter one exhibit per class, as many classes as desired.
4. A standard NGC, Inc. entry card, will be given ahead of time by the Design Chairman. Design
committee will direct exhibitors to placement for all designs. Exhibitors may then set up their
design.
5. Fresh plant material must never be treated. Only dried plant material may be treated.
Contrived flowers of dried plant material are allowed. No artificial foliage, flowers, or
vegetable is permitted in the design division.
6. Plant material must be used in every exhibit, but need not to be grown by the designer.
7. Container grown plants are not permitted in Division II.
8. Each exhibit must be titled with the interpretation of the class theme. A 3x5 card must
accompany each design exhibit; on one side, print your title and on the other side, list the plant
materials used in the design. A short description is permitted.
9. Special lighting is permitted within a design.
10. The American flag or other national flags are not to be incorporated into the design,
underlay, or background.
11. Landscapes or scenes are not permitted in Design Division.
12. Each class contains 4 exhibits.

as decorative items are also permitted

staging props such as panels, frames, pedestals, columns, boxes, cubes, etc, may be
incorporated into designs.
