OVER WYRE CLOGGERSScorton Bikes & Barrows Festival is back for its 5th year this coming May bank holiday weekend. This quirky annual festival raises vital funds for village groups and community projects and is action packed with events to suit everyone - families, cyclists, runners, walkers and visitors wanting to enjoy a day out.The main feature of the Festival is the decorated bicycles and wheelbarrows displayed throughout the village. Some are themed, some relate to current affairs and some are just plain wacky! We are being further spoiled this year by a series of classic cars and motorbike displays in and around the village. Over 50 cars will be visiting the village during the Festival. The Festival weekend kicks off with a mass bike ride around the village of Scorton for all to view the fascinating exhibits in gardens, up trees and hidden behind hedges! Over the weekend, St Peter’s Church will be hosting a Art Exhibition and a Family Art Challenge. It will also host a stirring brass band concert which will sound fabulous within the old church walls.Scorton Village Hall will be very busy over the weekend hosting many events including a Spring Fair of bric-a-brac, plants and gifts; a special Classic Afternoon Tea; a Lancashire Food & Gift Fair of jewellery, ceramics, homeware, local food and much more. Scorton and cycling go hand in hand so there are cycle rides for any budding Bradley Wiggins; visitors are welcome to try a 32 miler to Condor Green and a family friendly ride of 10 miles around Barnacre, both organised by Garstang Cycling Club. Other athletic events include the popular Sherriff 10k and a Children’s Fun Run in the morning for any potential Seb Coe’s. The village tradition, Scorton Rose Queen Festival will take place where local children take part in a fancy dress parade through the

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (CRY)

The Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Spring-like weather on 5th March gave a lovely feeling to our Country Coffee Morning and it was wonderful to see friends, old and new, supporting our venture. A busy and colourful range of stalls offering a vast array of goodies from upcycled vintage crafts by Hannah, handmade cards by Rosemary and Maxine to traditional fayre and tasty treats all helped to raise £557.37 towards our £7,000 target. Many thanks to all who helped in so many different ways, your kindness and support is deeply appreciated. On Sun 19th April an enthusiastic team of friends will be donning their walking boots to take part in our ‘CRY Canal Caper’ – a 19 mile trek along the Lancaster Canal from The Waterwitch, Lancaster to ‘Owd Nells, Bilsborrow, to help raise awareness of the work that CRY do and to raise funds for a local heart screening event for young people aged 14-35. If you’re around bridges 99-44 on the lovely ‘Black & White’ canal on 19th April give us a wave or come and say hello and perhaps drop a few pennies in the pot. We are setting off at 8:30am and hoping to keep a pace of about three miles an hour, probably with a few stops to admire the scenery, give the legs a break and enjoy the local hostelries. With any luck, we’ll arrive at Nells in time for tea! For further information, or to sponsor the team, visit our page at www.virginmoneygiving.com/SomeoneSpecial/CRYCanalCaper or ring Paula on 07785 106976

We used to have a client who was a leading haematologist. What she didn’t know about the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases of the blood could be written on a seed packet. Indeed, she was honoured for her work by the Queen and was widely respected within the medical community. Despite her abilities however, she managed to kill every plant unfortunate enough to be gifted to her or bought by her. One could imagine plants ducking for cover as she enthusiastically embarked on yet another buying trip to the garden centre. “I can’t understand it,” she’d say to us, “it was alright when I bought it.”We tried to use a clinical analogy in an attempt to save the lives of some herbs. “Imagine they’re dehydrated and they need a saline drip,” but to no avail. We’d arrive the followingweektofindthemgaspingforwater.

Under watering and over watering are common mistakes in the care of our green friends and at this time of year when we all enjoy re-stocking the garden, it’s really important to check out plant labels. Every plant has its own unique needs. We’re often asked into the gardens of homeowners who’ll point out plants that refuse to thrive. In most cases there’s a simple explanation. Shade-loving plants have been placed in full sun, and vice versa. Drought resistant plants have been placed in boggy ground and like all of us, plants do need nutrition so don’t forget to apply fertilizers or manure. Check when you’re digging in new plants that they have enough access to light and water and prune back shrubs that may be bullying other smaller plants.Even though it may rain this is no guarantee of your new plants receiving enough to drink.

Page 25: Over Wyre Focus - April 2015

25Did you know that you can read the “Green Book” online?

Quite often the moisture won’t reach new roots and free draining soils will soon dry out. Please remember to give your new plants a good soak when you dig them in and repeat regularly. A good mulch of manure, compost or bark chippings will help to retain moisture.Anyway, hark at me. I’m not bad at keeping plants alive but I’m having less success at keeping the baby watered. She’s decided at eight months old that she has no time for milkanymore. She’senjoyingmushedupfishpie and chicken roast dinners too much to be bothered with the white stuff. I’m having to findevermoreinventivewaysofsneakingitinto her diet. Sadly, unlike plants, babies don’t come with labels pointing out their unique needs!Happy Gardening!Alison Tarpey-Black Artnoire 07738 515 846 / (01253) 810039

Did you know that there was an Explorer Scout Unit in Stalmine? Explorers follow on from Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and is available for any young person from 13½ - 18 years old – even if you have never been in Scouts before! Your local Explorer Scout Unit is called Tenerrimo and we are based in Stalmine.

We meet each Thursday night at Stalmine Reading Rooms from 7:30pm – 9:30pm. We have been open for six years and in that time have been so proud to watch some of our young people progress and undertake challenges such as fundraising for a project in Peru to build a water well in a remote Peruvian community, complete their Explorer Belt travelling independently across Japan and being selected for the International Scout Jamboree held every four years where

The first speaker for the new season wasJacqueline Iddon and her topic for the evening was “Spring Into Action”.

Jacqueline has visited the Gardening Club on several previous occasions and once again provided us with an entertaining and informative talk. On this visit she showed photographs of her own garden in Bretherton demonstrating her ability to group plants so as to show them to their best advantage. Her enthusiasm for gardening is a boost to all gardeners.

The next meeting will be held on Mon 20th April at 7:30pm in the Church Hall, Knott End Methodist Church. The speaker will be Alan Foxall, formerly of Southport Botanic Gardens. His topic will be “Gardens To Visit”.

New members and visitors welcome.Additional information from Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519

40,000 scouts from across the world gather together to celebrate the World Wide Family of Scouting.

We run a number of camping weekends throughout the year such as the County Camp, full of adventure activities such as caving, pot holing, fell walking and canoeing (although they do provide hair and beauty that weekend too) and Environment Camp where we spend a weekend maintaining and repairing our big sites such as Great Tower and Waddecar to keep them in good working order for the next year.

Of course it’s not all as adventurous and exciting as this every month, but we do lots of adventure based activities designed to developconfidence, buildteamrelationshipsand help develop young people into young adults.

Since Christmas Tenerrimo has taken part

in unit activities such as building bird boxes ready for spring and a Cake Decorating competition. We celebrated Australia Day with Bushtucker Trials and created our own Aboriginal Art, improved our Quarter Master skills sorting out the unit store and supplies, we made and raced elastic band cars and worked on our camping stove cooking skills with a Ready Steady Cook challenge.

We’ve also been to Lazer Quest, completed a Service Crew camping weekend, joined in with the District Gang Show and organised a Curry and Bingo night gathering together with 30 other young people from across our district.

There are always other activities and events that we can join across both the district and the county for those who are aiming to complete Duke of Edinburgh Awards and need support to complete those all-important expeditions.

GARSTANG UNPLUGGEDThe Kenlis Arms - Thurs 23rd AprilLast year we brought you the winners of the BBC folk award for best duo – but we’d booked them nine months before they won. We booked this month’s guests nine months ago too. This year, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker are nominated for best duo and for best album for their CD, ‘Nothing Can Bring Back The Hour’. The winners will be announced on 22nd April and quite by chance, Josienne and Ben are with us in Garstang the following day.Hailed as the ‘the green shoots growing from the very top of the English folk family tree’, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker have been winning awards since 2012. One listen to the new album ‘Nothing Can Bring Back The Hour’ and you’ll hear that this is music that looks forward as well as back. They bring together honest, uncompromising songwriting with the masterpieces of a tradition to give you something audacious and assured. You might hear a medieval madrigal followed by a soundscape of layers ofJosienne’sflawlessvoice.YoumighthearBen’s signature finger style guitar paired, laconic, meandering and tinged with jazz .This duo is driven by what feels true to the song, however bleak, however exposing and howevertechnicallydifficult.New audiences from other walks of life aren’t quite prepared for the realisation that they just fell in love with a folk song. But audiences everywhere are falling for this duo because this is musicianship of the highest calibre. And while you never know what you will hear next, you can always count on that. It’s at Garstang Unplugged, The Kenlis Arms, Barnacre, Garstang PR3 1GD, on Thurs 23rd April. The music starts at 8:30pm. Tickets are £10 through our website, by reservation on (01995) 602795 or on the door.

Spring is here although not everyone is feeling it. Ideally, we prefer to deal with illnesses naturally, without taking medications. Alternative methods further complement traditional therapies and are becoming increasingly popular.Mental health issues, such as stress, anxiety and depression unfortunately are on the increase. Pace of life has increased and people struggle to keep up with this hectic world. It is hard to balance work and family life. Stress can be motivating as well as overwhelming. It is perhaps a question of how we properly manage stress instead of having it build up, as this is a prime factor in the development of mental health issues. Stress is not only a personal problem but also can be caused by economic, work-related issues and technology (with information swirling around us at break-neck speed, requiring rapid responses). Our brains need some ‘down time’ built into our daily lives as the impact on our bodies and lives can be really traumatic.Reflexologists are aware of these issuesand conditions. They respond positively to reflexologytreatment–frompainconditionse.g. arthritis and migraines to digestive orders such as IBS and indigestion as well as hormonal complaints such as menopausal flushestoperiodpain.Further research is being carried out as reflexology extends beyond relaxationeffects, improvements in diverse conditions and now more commonly combating the effects of stress and anxiety.Even those who have the tickliest of feet can enjoyreflexology.Clientsloveit! To learn more about reflexology and itsbenefits, have a talk delivered along withreflexologydemonstrationstoyourcommunitygroup. PILLING LANE WI‘All that Glitters’ from diamonds, gold and silver was the topic at our last meeting on the 4th March when we had Damien Carr from Garstang come and give us talk.

Damien had brought a number of handcrafted pieces of jewellery which were absolutely stunning and showed off his talent as a true artisan craftsman.

Damien began his talk by giving a brief detailed description of his history in jewellery making. This was followed by a slideshow.

The slideshow detailed the difference in the assay markings which Damien explained in greater detail showing us how to identify where the jewellery had been stamped with the assay marking.

This was truly informative and I am sure members of Pilling Lane WI will all be more aware when purchasing a new piece of jewellery.

Damien went on to explain the different cuts of diamonds and other precious stones. He told us that originally, throughout history, it was men that had adorned themselves with precious stones and metals and that it wasn’t until much later that women began to wear jewellery.

He explained the differences in carats in gold and what other metals were combined withgold.Hefinishedoffbyshowingsomefurther slides that showed him crafting some jewellery items. An extremely interesting talk by a very talented craftsman.

Our next meeting is on Wed 1st April at St Oswald’s Parish Hall at 7:30pm when the speaker will be Barry Band “A Tale of Two Theatres” and the competition is an “Old Theatre Programme”.

The trip to Ditchfield Glass on Wed 22nd April needs to be paid for at the next meeting and travel arrangement details can be

obtained from Anne Bewes/Enid Blair-Bryan at the April meeting.

A warm welcome awaits you so come and join us.Joy Mellor (01253) 811682

Message from the Practice Manager

NHS Fylde & Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is currently raising awareness of healthcare services to encourage people to choose the right NHS service for them and their families according to their symptoms.

It will reinforce the crucial message that A&E is for emergencies and life-threatening illnesses only. If someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk then 999 should

be called.

Many people attend emergency service departments with minor ailments which could be better treated elsewhere. This puts extra demands on already pressured emergency departments.

Coughs colds, sore throats, vomiting and other minor ailments such as sprains, do not necessarily require a trip to see a health professional. There are often more appropriate alternatives which can help people get the right treatment quicker.

Minor illnesses, ailments and injuries can be treated with plenty of rest and a well-stocked medicine cabinet that includes painkillers cold andfluremediesplastersandathermometer.

Pharmacists offer a range of health services. As well as dispensing prescriptions and other medicines, your pharmacy can provide free, confidentialexpertadviceandtreatmentfora

variety of common illnesses and complaints, without having to book a GP appointment.

If you have an illness or injury that won’t go away, make an appointment with your GP. We provide a range of services by appointment.

If you need to see a GP outside the surgery’s normal opening hours telephone the surgery and your call will be forwarded to the GP out-of-hours service.

Walk-In centres provide consultations, guidance and treatment for minor injuries and illnesses, as well as emergency contraception and sexual health advice.

There are two centres on the Fylde Coast, both operating seven days a week from 8:00am onwards.

NHS 111

111 is a free telephone service, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You should

call 111 if you urgently need medical help or information but your situation is not life-threatening. When you dial 111, you will be directed to the best local services to make sure you get fast and effective treatment.

A&E departments treat patients with major, life-threatening illnesses and injuries, so you should only call 999 or visit A&E when your situation is critical. Using a more appropriate service could save lives and will save you time.

The CCG want people to be better aware of the alternative services on offer to them and assess whether they actually need immediate urgent care before seeking it.

Residents can now also visit the specially designed whyaande.nhs.uk website for information and advice on what to do if they, or a loved one, falls ill or gets injured.

three or four-piece band performing on show nights.Directors – and Anne Markland, who teaches theatre arts at Preston College, is one of the best – think in about six dimensions at once. Theatre is wooing an audience into a suspension of disbelief. It’s about playing on emotions and creating an illusory but internally consistent world. And directors can’t stand still. Every new show, or new production of an old show, needs an injection of gasp-inducing innovation, or a director is just refurbishing an old hat. So in Anne’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar convention is turned on its head. She uses two stages at opposite ends of the hall theatre connected by a central aisle into which two blocks of the audience face, and the aisle itself becomes a centre of action between the temple authorities hostile to

GARSTANG HISTORICAL SOCIETY‘The Winders of Wyresdale’Wed 8th April 7:30pmGarstang URC Church HallMusician and music historian, Andy Hornby will lead the talk and musical presentation. The Winder family from Dolphinholme and Wyresdale formed the

mainstay of a village band from the late 1700s to the First World War. Many of their original musical scores have been collected by Mr Hornby in recent years, some of them from members of the Winder family who still live in the Garstang/Wyresdale area.Mr Hornby said: “Whilst in Scotland and

Ireland, the tradition of music for village dances is largely unbroken. In England it virtually died out with the Industrial revolution and the Great War but fortunately these tune-books that were hand-copied by members of the Winder family have come down to us and show the repertoire of country dance and song tunes from the early 1800s.”A similar presentation on The Winders of Wyresdale was held in Garstang during the town’s 2013 Arts and Music festival. It attracted a capacity audience and ther same is expected for the session in April. For more information about the Historical Society, contact chairman, Peter Burrell on (01995) 601054 (after 6pm), or visit www.garstanghistoricalsociety.org.ukMore information about The Winders of Wyresdale can be found at www.andyhornby.net

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges...

However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering...

Inowrealisewhatmadeitallsodifficult:itwastherealisationthattakingandacceptingthe responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make.

Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself:• Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities

like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’?

• Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff?

• DoIwanttoseecertificatesplasteredalloverthewallsordoIwanttobegreetedevery time I visit by the same familiar faces?

• Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate

If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself.

PILLING CHARITIES DANCE GROUPPilling Memorial HallIt is with sadness that we have to inform all dancers of the closure of Pilling Memorial Hall on the 31st March 2015.

Developers have bought the land and the Village Hall will be demolished. It is the end of an era.

The Committee would like to thank all dancers who attended the dances over the 32 years of the running of these social evenings. Without your support we would not have been able to give the amount of over £58,000 to good causes.

It was never intended to be a money raising thing but any money left over at the end of the night would be banked and at some point, when a reasonable amount was saved, it went to, for instance, local hospices, the Air Ambulance and many more that are too numerous to mention.

So, all I have to add to this sad memo is “Keep on Dancing” and we will see you at other locations in the local district.

Our royal castle in Lancaster is the oldest oneinEuropeandin1821becamethefirsttoestablish within its walls a prison for women. Until then the only women occupants were widows who had inherited their husbands’ debts. Their keep was paid for by enforced employment as laundresses for the men. In many instances these, such as tailors, were able to continue their trade.

These and many more facts were imparted to a rapt audience at Pilling W.I. By Dr. Graham Kemp, Assistant Manager of the castle, who accompanied his talk with illustrations of changes in the structure over the years.

In 2011 Dr. Kemp had the satisfaction of having performances of a play he wrote staged in the castle. His drama marked the 400th anniversary of the Pendle Witches’ trials.

He was thanked by Maureen O’Reilly and judged the competition for the oldest coin. Winner was Lena Tooth and runners up were Helen Curwen, Sue Ivinson and Bernie Fitzpatrick.

Arrangements were made for transport to Southport for our federation’s Spring Council Meeting where our guest speaker will be Dame Stella Rimmington.

Plans are in hand for the centenary celebrations to mark the introduction of the W.I into Britain from Canada.

A new day is dawning and sounds do arise,It’s not just the seagulls but voices and criesFrom the villagers who have their work to attend.Where do they live? Of course it’s Knott End.Sandra Langhorne

Charity Students from each form in Keller House had a bake-off staying after school one night for two hours baking cakes.

The brief outlined that they needed to have a tray bake and a batch of muffins. Thestudents were judged on several aspects of their bake from the presentation to taste to how tidy they kept their work area throughout the bake off.

Despite receiving scores for a variety of elements, there were several teams on the same overall mark. Therefore Mr Coe, Head of Keller House, had to call it a draw stating

Hillary House has also been highly competitive. Each form has been collecting money for their House charity, Cancer Research.

Form Tutors will nominate their most generous

student who will then have the opportunity to win a new tablet. The form that raises the most money will also receive a prize so Form Tutors are becoming even more competitive than their form members! The winners will be announced after Easter.

Personal Development DaysRecently all our students were involved in various activities to develop their personal skills. Year 7 looked at Diverse Communities whilst Year 8 went to Borwick Hall for a day of activities to enhance their independent thinking and leadership skills. Year 9 explored Self Awareness with Year 10 being involved in workshops to prepare them for their work experience in July.

As GCSE exam season is approaching Year 11 had Study Skills workshops to help them plan for the next three months at school.

Mr Ireland, Director of Technology and Computing, said the students enjoyed the experience thoroughly and although they did not win they improved on last year as they had not even reached the finals in2014.

German ExchangeStudents from our partner school in Ingolstadt spent a week with us during which they visited Chester and Lancaster Castle. hey also joined in lessons and became fully involved in the life of the school.

Our students will be going over to Germany in July which offers them the opportunity to improve their language skills as well as experiencing a different European culture.

Learning LatinStudents in Years 7, 8 and 9 have begun an introduction to the Latin language at the end of which they will receive certificates fromCambridge University. This is an after school class and yet another language the school offers as Mandarin is taught on another night.

If you would like to visit us at any time to see what goes on at Saint Aidan’s or have any questions, do contact me at school.

Over the last few months there has been a spate of thefts from sheds, garages and garden outbuildings, with bikes and power tools being stolen.

Your garden/outdoor area can make your homemoresecureandshouldbeyourfirstline of defence against burglars.

If your outdoor area can be easily accessed without attracting attention, then intruders will have more time to steal from you. Making your outdoor area more secure could prevent an intruder getting into your home, garage or shed.

Do not leave ladders, tools or gardening equipment lying around - they could be used to break into your house.

With Spring on the way, whilst working outside, make sure you lock your doors and windows to prevent sneak-in theft.

PILLING BAND

You will recall from last month that the local qualifying contests for the National Brass Band Championships took place in Blackpool on 1st March.

This year, the band competed in the third section, following our promotion from the fourth in January. This meant, of course, that we faced stiffer competition and perhaps the resultreflectedthat.

There were 19 bands competing in the third section, these being divided into morning and afternoon sessions, allowing the adjudicators to take a break for lunch and Pilling were allocated a place in the morning session.

This meant an early start, beginning with a rehearsal from 7:30am until 8:30am in St Kentigern’s Church Hall near Devonshire Square.

We then met at the Winter Gardens and

awaited the outcome of the draw for order of play, which turned out to be No 8. A further wait then, whilst some went for a bacon buttieorabrewbeforefinallyregisteringandgoing on stage in the Opera House at about 11:15am.

We thought that the performance went reasonably well, some minor hitches though it never ever goes as well as we have played in the bandroom!

Those who stayed then had time for some lunch, a bit of shopping, a drink in the bar or to listen to some other bands (not recommended) before the results were announced at about 3:15pm.

A good number of us gathered in the Opera House to hear the adjudicator’s comments and to see the top six bands receive their prizes. Sadly, Pilling Band was not one of them, though we were pleased to see local

80th Anniversary Appeal

Sadly the concert planned for the Memorial Hall Pilling has been cancelled due to the demolition taking place before our concert on Thurs 9th April. The offer of St Johns Church, Pilling was considered but a Musical Quiz without tables and a Hot Pot supper is not possible - so 3 months of planning for a super event gone forever -.a loss of over £1000.00 to the Band.

And so we are looking for a new home for Variety Bandbox. In the meantime we have submitted plans to Wyre Borough Council for Building Regulation approval for the new surface of Field House Lane. We have financial support from several of theproperties but two others are still considering their options.

Finally events on Mon 4th May are: Parish Hall Preesall - 2:00pm - Tea 4 Two with Film of the 1987 opening ceremony of the new Bandroom followed by a tribute Concert to the memory of Tom Redman, Band Trainer/Conductor for over 30 years, given by his former pupils. A Macmillan Cancer Support Table will be in attendance with items to buy and help them to help us.

This event is a 50/50 shared event with the Parish Hall Committee. Tickets £5*

At 7:00pm - Brass and Voices in Concert - the Band with the Elswick Singers plus a Souvenir Programme (worth £2) free. Tickets £7.50.

HAMBLETON W.I.The World Famous Ringmaster Norman Barratt-dressedinhisbestoutfitofblacktophat, white bow tie and shirt, red frock coat with pale blue lapels, black trousers and shiny black shoes - entertained us with a perpetual cheeping from a box in the corner, with quick-fire jokes, monologuesof “Albert and the Lion” with rapid putting on and taking off of hats to suit each character to remind us that he had been the Blackpool Tower Circus Ringmaster for most of his eighty year working life. His education and accent come from being a boarder at Ripon Grammar School. On his holidays his mother used to take him to all the shows and circuses and from a young age he wanted to be a lion tamer, not appreciating the danger! One of his stints at Bertram Mills Travelling Circus was helping with the elephants which had to get out of the vans when going up any hills. Deciding on an act to travel with he decided on budgerigars as you can easily get a dozen in one box on the back seat of a car. Norman turned the box around, let eight brightly coloured budgies out and they performed marvellous tricks, walking up ladders, playing on see saws and pushing small obstacles over. All of us were entranced and appreciative of a very entertaining gentleman who raises money for the Hospice charity. The vote of thanks was given by Sue Cross. The competition of a homemade budgie was won by Bernice Healey 2nd Pat Bick 3rd Maureen Rodger. Urgent AppealCan you offer Raven the cat a loving foster home? She was rescued by one of the RSPCA Inspectors after she was found as a stray in poor condition. She is an independent lady on the look out for a quiet home without children and where she will be the only pet. We estimate her to be between 7 to 10 years old. When Raven was found, she had a skin condition which has since improved but an old injury to one of her back legs means she doesn’t walk like your average cat although she is not in any pain. We believe that she is stressed and unhappy in the cattery so a permanent foster home would be ideal for her.A permanent foster home means that the branch will cover any medical costs and will ensure that booster vaccinations, flea

treatment and wormers are also provided. If you believe you can offer her such a home or have any questions then please do get in touch. Sponsor a KennelAfter 56 years at Division Lane in Blackpool, we recently moved to our new home in the purpose-built centre at Old Toms Lane, Stalmine. We are a self supporting, independently registered charity here to provide care for animals which have been rescued or collected by the RSPCA Inspectors. These animals have often been mistreated, abused, neglected or abandoned by their owners. We have continuing costs to support the new re-homing centre. The day to day care of the animals and the increasing vet bills incurred before they can go to new homes is a huge cost to the branch. Could your business consider supporting us by sponsoring a kennel or cat pen? If you jointheschemeyouwillbegivenacertificateof thanks, your company name and logo displayed at the animal centre and you will receive our two annual newsletters. Your donation will provide a safe environment for these gorgeous animals. GARSTANG SHOW

Garstang Show celebrates 200 years on August 1st 2015 and the organisers are looking for artefacts and memorabilia to be part of an exhibition on the Show Field to celebrate the contributions Garstang and Fylde farmers have made to the development of agriculture in our area.

Garstang Agricultural Society was formed in 1809 with the aim of being “useful and beneficialtotheneighbourhood”andhelditsfirstexhibitionin1813.

Fylde and Garstang farmers have always been at the forefront of agricultural initiatives. When Mr George Singleton of Kirkland Hall was sorting out his papers for a move to Blackpool in 1905, he found there a list of “Premiums offered by the Farming Society held at Garstang for the year 1816,” and contacted the Preston Guardian about his find.

The prize for the best longhorn bull caused the reporter writing up the story to claim that Lancashire Longhorns in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries “were the prevailing stock in almost every part of the country,” and though the beasts were originally from Craven, they were bred mostly in the Fylde and had long attracted buyers from all over the country.

The writer next refers to Mr Wilby of Linton inLeicestershirebeingthefirsttoattempttoimprove longhorns in 1720, followed by Mr Webster of Canty near Coventry, and he then sold two heifers to Mr Bakewell of Dishley, Leicestershire. These, plus a Westmorland long-horned bull were “the foundation of Mr Bakewell’s famous herd.”

Therefore, some of Mr Bakewell’s stock improvements, foundation of the so-called ‘Agricultural Revolution,’ were based on animals from the Fylde.

Garstang farmers can claim credit for

Page 77: Over Wyre Focus - April 2015

other initiatives: members of the Garstang Milksellers’ Association, which had been in existence “for several years” met at the Green Man Inn, Myerscough in November 1898 to discuss extending the Association and making it rather more active.

The regular attenders were James Pearson of St Michael’s Hall, Thomas Smith of Sandham Mill, Joseph Whittaker of Matshead Farm, Claughton, Thomas Brewer of Barnacre, Thomas Banks of Bilsborrow, and Thomas Ibison and Richard Ibison of Fogg Farm. They decided to call themselves the “Garstang and District Dairy Farmers’ Association.”

The general idea was that “the object of the association was to protect the interests of the members generally.” Humble beginnings, but out of these meetings grew the Lancashire Farmers’ Association, which amalgamated with the NFU to become that body’s Lancashire Branch in 1921, and the Preston and District Farmers’ Trading Society (Preston Farmers), which served local farmers for most of the twentieth century.

So the 200 or so years since the formation of a Garstang Agricultural Society have seen a lot to celebrate, and it is hoped to mount an exhibition worthy of those achievements.

If anyone has any artefacts or memorabilia of the shows or associated events such as the “Country Princess” competition which they feel may be of interest then please contact Susan Atkinson on (01524) 791283, or John Grimbaldeston (01772) 691017. They will be scanned or photographed and returned as soon as possible, and shared with visitors to the Show on 1st August.
