PROTECT WYRE GROUPIt’s with some incredulity that I have to confirm that a decision has been made by Energy Minister, Lord Bourne, to grant development consent to Halite Energy for the

proposed Underground Gas Storage scheme at Preesall.

Many thousands of people will have had their belief in the impartiality and fairness of politics, democracy, the judiciary and the country’s planning system severely tested, perhaps most specifically in the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

Over the past 13 years the local population has expressed their opposition to this scheme both vocally and by writing in their thousands and these views were endorsed by planning refusals at parish, borough and county council level.

A Public Inquiry recommended refusal in 2006 following which a modified scheme was proposed and resubmitted by Halite.

This modified scheme was subjected to a thorough and detailed investigation by a panel of three commissioners from Infrastructure Planning called the Examining Authority (ExA) and they were assisted by an independent consultant geologist.

The ExA recommended a very subjective approval of the Halite scheme; one proviso was that it should be demonstrated that the scheme would be able to accommodate a minimum of 300 mcm of working gas.

The Secretary of State (SoS) refused consent on 9th April 2013 and this was followed by a High Court appeal which resulted in a ruling endorsing the Secretary of State’s decision.

In what appears to be a bizarre situation the appeal is then challenged by another appeal and a different judge, Mrs Justice Patterson, upholds the new appeal and directs the SoS to re-examine the ExA’s report.

As part of this re-examination, the SoS appointed an independent geological assessor, Senergy (GB) Ltd, to assess the technical information which included the late submission of seismic survey results.

Senergy noted that the data they received from Halite and/or its agents was sometimes “incomplete or late and delivered in obscure formats” and the Senergy report was therefore “necessarily limited to the data received”.

Halite has consistently maintained that it proposed to store up to 600 mcm of working gas but has equally and consistently been unable to offer geological data to support this figure as witnessed by Senergy whose report only ‘suggests’ that the salt might be suitable.

The ExA was less than impressed that the seismic surveys undertaken by Halite were

PROTECT WYRE GROUP (cont)done after the ExA’s report was concluded and it suggested that whilst the late submission was of particular relevance, that if the seismic lines data and the subsequent conclusions been placed as evidence before the ExA then planning permission would almost certainly have been recommended for refusal based on insufficient proven volumes.

It remains a fact that Senergy considers that there is a 5.8% chance of Halite achieving 300 mcm of working gas which is greatly at odds with Halite’s claim that this scheme will add 20% to the nation’s storage capacity.

Lancashire County Council stated that “if the proposed capacity is reduced to the degree identified [by Senergy], the County Council is concerned that the benefits associated with such a project and the contribution it would subsequently make to national need would not outweigh the impacts of the development on the local landscape”. Halite confirmed that

the size of the above ground infrastructure will not change regardless of the working gas capacity of the storage facility.

The ExA also expressed concern to the SoS that “if only a materially lower volume of gas capacity can be achieved it may not give sufficient benefit to outweigh the adverse impacts of the project”.

Protect Wyre Group’s view in its representation to the SoS on 9th September 2014 was that the application should be refused because, using the ExA’s own words, “If the minimum threshold cannot be met it would mean the development would not be permitted to proceed any further”.

Halite challenged Senergy’s projections and called them “unduly pessimistic” but the SoS stated that “there is no suggestion that Senergy’s probabilistic calculations are fundamentally wrong and taking a precautionary approach, the SoS considers the planning balance on the basis of Senergy’s independent figures”.

At this stage you would presume that because Halite has not provided sufficiently robust data to back up its claims of meeting the 300 mcm of working gas and that the impact of the infrastructure and associated works far outweighs the lesser contribution that their scheme might make to the national need and that it should be refused.

But in spite of all that’s gone before, the SoS states on 17th July that “even with a relatively smaller level of uncertainty as to the actual storage capacity that could ultimately be achieved, it is clear that the project would still make a ‘nationally significant’ contribution to the UK’s security of supply”.

It was widely published in the press that the decision on the Halite scheme would not be taken by Amber Rudd (Secretary of State) herself, due to the conflict of interests

need. There is no mention of how the scheme might affect any proposed development of fracking or indeed of the proposal to harness the tidal power of the River Wyre with a tidal barrage, the latter promising to deliver more clean energy than any gas storage scheme.

The National Grid 10 Year Statement shows UK gas storage in the order of 4,600 mcm with a further 6,900 mcm in six schemes with planning granted, all of which appear to be stalled for lack of investment and all of which are in better and proven salt strata than the proposed scheme. A total of 11,500 mcm.Halite’s contribution could be as little as 130 mcm - hardly a significant contribution to the national need - if indeed the scheme ever comes to fruition! You must draw your own conclusions on the decision. So much for localism!May we offer our grateful thanks to everyone who has supported us in whatever way over all the years.Ian Mulroy - Chair PWGwww.pwgroup.org.uk

PROTECT WYRE GROUP (cont)created by her brother Roland Rudd’s PR company, Finsbury, representing and promoting Halite’s scheme. So it has to be presumed that it is Lord Bourne’s decision to reject the recommendations of the planners at Lancashire County Council who have examined the scheme for the past 12 years, the eminent planning commissioners from the Infrastructure Planning Inspectorate and the equally eminent independent consultant geologists who have conducted minute line by line analysis of the geological data and finally Senergy, the independent government appointed geological consultants.Tens of thousands of hours and indeed tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of pounds have been spent by individuals, councils and the British tax payer in examining this scheme in its many repetitive forms, all of which have reached the same conclusion – REFUSAL!Approval appears to be centred on national

ROMANY WAGONS

Passing The Grapes in St Michael’s, shortly after the Gala in June, on the car park I spotted the wonderful sight of two true Romany Wagons. They were in immaculate condition, one dark green and cream, the carving beautiful. A delightful gig, again perfect, was parked between that and the second wagon which was an amazing sight to behold, intricately carved in green and maroon highlighted, as I later found out, in 23 carat gold leaf. True labours of love. Many man hours must have been spent on these examples of the craft. Nearby stood an old Massey Ferguson tractor, again in excellent condition. A sight to make one appreciate the fact that there are people who care for traditional antiquities and spend so much time on them to give pleasure to others. Intrigued, I made more enquiries and was amazed to find the man with this wonderful talent. I have lived in St. Michael’s for 30 years and did not know that at the end of my road, for 15 of those years, this remarkable work was undertaken.Joe Davidson, brought up in Blackpool among the horses of the Landau drivers, became hooked as a boy, making small trollies on pram wheels, which led to his hobby. The hobby became an obsession. Finding a neglected old landau in a barn, he rebuilt it beautifully, as villagers would know - it carried the Gala Queens! The Romany ‘wagons’ as they are called, were a big step forward. The most intricate work takes two years with the 23 carat gold leaf applied by Joe’s wife, Donna. The wagons are taken, on show, to the famous Appleby Fair, where Joe is very well known and considered the best craftsman in the country! What extraordinary people one can find in a small village.Judith Hunter

INNER WHEEL SHOVELS CHARITY FUN RUNJust before the end of our Inner wheel year, our President, Joan presented a cheque to her Charity, North West Children’s Support Group.

This Charity gives children the opportunity to share social experiences with others, give respite for parents and other siblings and take children for holidays which they wouldn’t normally have.

At the beginning of July President Joan installed Charmaine Wilkinson as our new President, and Charmaine gave us the details of all that she had planned for the forthcoming year.

Inner Wheel is a very friendly ladies group and if anyone would be interested to learn more about us they would be very welcome to contact our Secretary

Maureen Garstang (01995) 604336.

The presentation night will be held on Sat 5th Sept from 7:00pm. Yes - you guessed it - at the Shovels.

Well considering what an awful day we had back in May this has not stopped the sponsorship raised.

A big thank you to all sponsors, entrants who raised sponsorship plus everyone involved to make this event another success.

We have approx £5,000 to distribute between local organisations and charities when successful applicants have been notified.

The amount raised is from events from last year, this year’s Fun Run plus the Charity Football Match Shovels v Seven Stars. I will not mention the score - ok then - 9-3 to the Stars.

On presentation night we have entertainment from the fantastic local group the Captains Crew. Hope you will join us for our presentation night.

ST LUKE’S CHURCH WINMARLEIGHSt Luke’s Church was consecrated and inaugurated for the people of Winmarleigh and surrounding areas in February 1876.

To celebrate the 140th anniversary a small group are researching the history of the Church with a view to holding a celebratory event in 2016.

If you have any old photographs, articles, books or information about the church we would be interested in seeing it.

Lord Winmarleigh built the Church as well as the Hall, School and the Vicarage so we would also be interested in any information you may have about any of them too.

Please contact either Val Whittaker (01524) 791440 or Irene Connick (01524) 791455.

The Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial FundHow lucky we were with the weather for our market stall! This, together with plants/book sales, raised a superb total of £324.09. Thank you to everyone who kindly made this possible, helping us on our way towards our target of £7,000 to fund a heart screening event at Garstang Academy.

Twilight Treasure HuntFri 7th AugThis popular annual evening of fun for all ages is starting at Barton Village Hall this year with registration of vehicles and staggered starts between 5:30pm and 7:00pm.

Whilst hunting for clues and ‘treasure’ we’re sure you’ll spot things you hadn’t noticed about our wonderful locality before and perhaps win some prizes too!

Places cost £5 per person, which includes light refreshments at Cobble Hey Gardens, Claughton, at the end of the hunt.

If you can let us know you’re coming beforehand it will help with planning and catering, but we’re happy for all to come along and join in the fun on the night.

COMPUTER SAFETY - PART 4Last month I promised to talk about internet security packages this time. However instead I’m going to cover something different which is not really a ‘Computer Safety’ topic but I’ve been receiving a lot of questions about this recently.

There is a new version of Windows due out at the end of July, which is called Windows 10 (we’ve skipped over 9!). If you currently have Windows 7 or Windows 8, you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free at any time in the first year.

You may have noticed a new small icon appear about a month ago in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, near the clock. If you click on this it offers you the opportunity to ‘reserve’ your free update, which means that once the new version is available it will automatically start downloading onto your computer. The download will be VERY big so

could take a while. Once it is all downloaded, it should tell you and then you can choose when to install it.

I can’t tell you exactly what will happen next, as I won’t know until I’ve had chance to try it myself at the end of the month. However, I can tell you that:• It will require a bit of free space on

the hard drive to perform the update, probably around 16 to 20GB;

• It will take quite a while;• It will probably ask you to make some

decisions and choices;• It will need to restart the machine several

times;• It would be sensible to make sure that

you have taken a backup of all your personal documents, pictures, music, etc just to be on the safe side;

Page 25: Over Wyre Focus - August 2015

25Did you know that you can read the “Green Book” online?

• Once Windows 10 is fully installed, most home users will automatically get all future updates. There won’t be a choice about waiting or skipping any updates.

If you currently have Windows 7 or Windows 8 and haven’t seen the upgrade flag yet, it probably means that your machine is missing some important current Windows updates.

Even if you are not intending to go for the Windows 10 upgrade, you probably need to get your machine up-to-date (see last month’s article!).

My advice at this stage is not to rush into the upgrade unless you are really keen and happy to play around with things.

The free upgrade offer will still be there for another 12 months at least so there’s no need to feel you’ve got to do it straight away. Wait until the rush dies down and any initial

teething problems get ironed out, then make sure you check out any specific instructions and requirements before you start and possibly go have a look at someone else’s to see what difference it will make.

As usual, if you have any questions or concerns about security, then please do give me a ring for a quick chat.

Estuary. I do not believe that the agencies, whose duty it is to protect our countryside, have fulfilled their statutory duties. Please be assured that I will continue to fight against the plans.

In the meantime, I would like to thank – on behalf of the local community – Ian Mulroy and Howard Phillips of the Protect Wyre Group for their dedication to fighting this application. They have both helped me immensely with my efforts over the years.

In other planning related news, I was pleased that Punch Taverns’ appeal against the listing of The Shovels Inn in Hambleton as a community asset has been dismissed. The pub will remain a community asset, which means the local community will have a greater say over future changes to the pub. For instance, the community will be given the first option to purchase the pub, if Punch

I can’t tell you how angry I am at the Halite decision. For 13 years we have all tried to fight the proposals for a gas storage facility. Please be assured that I will ensure that every

inch of any development by this shoddy company is monitored and controlled. In its time, Canatxx, followed by Halite, has been involved in paying disgraced politicians and numerous PR companies to intimidate its way to this result. It has also ridden roughshod over geological evidence and genuine worries expressed by local people. I am determined not to stop here.

I have written to the European Commission to ask them to investigate a breach of the environmental safeguards, which are in place to protect Morecambe Bay and the Wyre

Taverns decide to sell it.

Wyre Council has now launched a consultation on its Local Plan. I strongly advise residents across Wyre to contribute to the process. Local Plans give local authorities control to decide how and where to meet local need, be that sites for housing, employment or retail and the accompanying infrastructure. Once in place the Wyre Local Plan will become a shield from unwanted development. The consultation runs until 7th August. Further details on can be found here: http://wyre.gov.uk/info/200319/emerging_planning_policies/970/issues_and_options_2015

Earlier in July we saw the Chancellor, George Osborne MP, give his Summer Budget, the first of this Government. Budget Day is one of the big events of the Parliamentary calendar, when the chancellor of the day reports on the state of the economy and the government’s

taxation and spending plans. In line with that long tradition, Mr Osborne reported that the budget deficit has been halved since 2010, the recovery is well-established and economic security is returning. The UK had the fastest growing economy in the G7 in 2014 and is set to retain that position this year.

This is very welcome news and demonstrates that the difficult financial decisions taken by the Coalition Government are paying off, literally! The Chancellor estimates that we should achieve a budget surplus by 2019/2020. I have been proud of the resilience of our local economy with high employment being retained through the last decade.

The Budget also contained welcome news for householders:

• A rise in the tax-free Personal Allowance to £11,000 next year;

Youth Council/Young MayorCouncillors have agreed to set up a Youth Council with a young Mayor using the same arrangements as the successful Youth Council in Garstang.

The Youth Council is designed to engage young people in the area and involve them in the civic life of the villages. Watch out for more information in the near future.

Closure of NatWest BankThe Town Council has been delighted at the well-supported local and national campaign to protest the closure of the bank. Councillors agreed that a letter should be sent to the Bank pointing out their failure to comply with the terms of the Access to Banking Protocol which was introduced in March 2015. The Protocol forms a formal commitment for a bank to engage with key local stakeholders to improve the bank’s understanding of the

impact the closure will have on users and the community and also the availability of alternative ways to bank. The results of the engagement must be made public before the branch is closed. Councillors also agreed that, as a further mark of protest, the Town Council accounts with NatWest be closed and new accounts opened with another bank.

Local PlanWyre Council is consulting on Issues and Options as part of developing the Local Plan with the key issue being where future development should take place.

The document proposes three options:

PREESALL TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

Page 39: Over Wyre Focus - August 2015

• Option 1 focuses development on the Fylde Coast Peninsula main urban area with the remainder being split between settlements on the A6 corridor and other defined rural settlements including Preesall and Knott End.

• Option 2 focuses development on the A6 corridor with some development in Fleetwood, Thornton and Poulton-le-Fylde and a similar amount in other defined rural settlements.

• Option 3 is for development to be dispersed more evenly across the Borough. Councillors felt that Option 2 provided the best outcome for Preesall and Knott End.

Installation of CCTVThe Town Council has agreed to install CCTV in hotspots around the township, particularly in light of the recent ‘ram raid’ of the Co-op. A Working Group will look at the

different types of CCTV, possible locations for cameras, costs and potential funding streams.

‘Shaping Your Neighbourhood’ - Grant Success

Stalmine Parish Council was delighted to learn that it has been awarded a ‘Shaping Your Neighbourhood’ grant by Wyre Council.

The grant will be used to buy a storage container, a stock of sandbags and road signs for use when roads are flooded.

The Parish Council established a Flood Working Group to work on a Flood Plan with Wyre Council and the Environment Agency - a local storage facility was one of the actions identified to help prevent flooding and to warn local residents and road users when a road is flooded.

The Flood Working Group has also identified a list of areas which need work to prevent flooding happening in the first place. The list forms part of a multi-agency working group.

Play Area

Councillors have begun considering a request made at the Annual Parish Meeting that the play area be located at the top of the playing field closer to the car park.

Councillors agreed that the Bowling Club, which would be most affected by the move, be consulted.

The Parish Council would also like to know the views of other residents on the proposed location.

Please get in touch with any Councillor or the Clerk (details below).

STALMINE PARISH COUNCIL (cont)because they cannot live with their own family or live on their own. It is family-based care provided by individuals or families, enabling adults to share in family and community life, as well as supporting them to develop their strengths, abilities and independence.

People who require Shared Lives support come from a variety of backgrounds and may be an adult with a learning disability or an older adult.

An extensive matching process is put in place between the carer and the person to be placed. Carers come from many different backgrounds and no formal qualifications are required. What really matters are personal qualities – you need to be patient, positive, flexible and have a person-centred approach.

Carers receive a generous financial allowance and a dedicated support team. Further information can be obtained from

suggests the plants date back 150 million years.

Having said that they’re a right flippin’ nuisance so you’ll be pleased to know there are now two products on the market that we’ve found to be really effective in controlling the blighters.

The first is called Kurtail with the active ingredient of glufosinate-ammonium, a really powerful herbicide.

This product works most effectively by individually spraying each visible plant when it has fully emerged. Within a couple of weeks the plants will go black, wither and die. Only when this has happened should you remove it.

It’s a systemic weed killer which means the treatment will be carried down into the root system. However repeat applications will be necessary as the visible part of the

We’re all plagued by pesky and persistent weeds at this time of year, but there’s one in particular that can be difficult to eradicate – however your sleepless nights are soon to be a thing of the past as we have a solution!

Equisetum Arvense, otherwise known as horsetail (and sometimes incorrectly referred to as mare’s tail) is an incredibly invasive and deep-rooted perennial weed that will grow in beds, borders, lawns and even up through paths and patios.

One of our landscaping colleagues reported tracing the roots of horsetail thirty metres under a concrete drive.

Just before I get to the bit about killing it off it’s worth reminding ourselves that it’s a plant with an incredible history. According to an article in the New Scientist, horsetail is a contender for the oldest surviving plant genus on land. A recently discovered fossil

plant is just the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface lurks a network of brown, brittle roots that refuse to go quietly.

This may be a bit obvious but don’t go flinging the stuff around willy nilly – whatever it touches it kills so use a handheld pump sprayer.

The other product that contains the same active ingredient is called Whippet (!!) and it’s worth noting that both products provide complete control of all annual and perennial weeds including thistles, couch grass and nettles etc.

One word of caution – neither are cheap but if you’re fed up with fighting a losing battle then we heartily recommend both.

And so to mare’s tail, the popular aquatic plant that regularly gets mistaken for being a bruiser when in fact it’s not even related to horsetail.

DOWN TO EARTH (cont)Hippuris Vulgaris is a creeping, perennial herb, found in shallow waters and mud flats. It roots underwater, but most of its leaves are above the water surface and they have a look of the Christmas tree about them. They are excellent for oxygenating and maintaining clean healthy pond water and providing a protected environment for small fish and wildlife.

Interestingly in herbal medicine, mare’s tail has a number of uses, chiefly to do with healing wounds such as stopping internal and external bleeding, curing stomach ulcers, and soothing inflammation of the skin. I’d try a plaster and some antiseptic cream first.

OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUB

At the July meeting Malcolm Tranter gave an interesting, illustrated talk on “The Contrasting Islands of Madeira and Lanzarote”. Both islands are very similar in size but there the similarities end.

Madeira is the more northerly of the two islands lying off the coast of Portugal whereas Lanzarote is close to the coast of North Africa.

This difference in latitude accounts for their very different geography: Trade Winds from the north bring clouds and moisture to Madeira, whereas winds from the Saharan desert blow towards Lanzarote.

Madeira is mountainous, green, fertile and renowned for its gardens. Lanzarote is volcanic, barren and stark.

Much of the Lanzarote landscape was formed during a massive volcanic eruption in the

1700‘s. It has almost no rainfall and obtains its water supply from the de-salination of sea water. From this description it sounds most uninviting but in fact from Malcolm’s photographs the area has a curiously attractive appeal.

The next meeting of the Gardening Club will be on Mon 17th Aug and will be the members annual Flower Show.

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges...

However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering...

I now realise what made it all so diffi cult: it was the realisation that taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make.

Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself:• Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities

like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’?

• Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff?

• Do I want to see certifi cates plastered all over the walls or do I want to be greeted every time I visit by the same familiar faces?

• Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate

If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself.

Save Our BankSince the news that NatWest Bank have decided to close their branch in Knott End the community has really come together to fight it.

Local people have given up their own time to run petitions, online groups, and even grabbed national newspaper headlines with the ‘Save Our Bank’ campaign. The strength of feeling really shows; this is the bank many of you have used all your life, the bank you use for your small business, and the bank you had hoped would serve our Over Wyre community for many years to come. It seems that although the bonuses are back for the bankers in The City, in our rural part of North Lancashire there is nothing to celebrate.I met with a great many local residents and

bank customers over the past month, including outside NatWest where you kindly shared your own experiences with me. I wrote to NatWest immediately expressing the strong feelings you have for the branch and reminding them of their television advert “We will never close the last bank in town” explaining that because of that, they had won a great deal of goodwill and custom which was being lost over the news of the closure. To date they have not responded to me and so I will be trying to raise the issue on the floor of the House of Commons before Parliament’s summer recess. Although that does rely on me catching the Speaker’s eye so we shall see!Gas StorageFor the past thirteen years the issue of gas storage has hung over all of us; local people, councils and MPs of all political parties have been united against the plans to store gas in

the salt caverns. Within days of being elected as your local MP I was made aware of the relationship between the Energy Minister Amber Rudd, who we had expected would make a decision, and her brother Ronald Rudd who heads up the lobbying firm which represents Halite. Many of you signed my petition to the Minister seeking clarification on who would be making the final decision given the obvious conflict of interest. In the end the decision was made by an unelected member of the House of Lords, Lord Bourne. I am very disappointed with the decision and furious that a government that talks a lot of talk on localism, has truly failed to walk the walk when it comes to the gas storage issue. Gas storage has been rejected by two Secretaries of State four times already, on the issue of safety and roads not being suitable.

It surprises me that something which wasn’t considered safe two years ago is suddenly deemed to be safe. I fear that new investment in our area could be threatened by this. I am aware that Vitrex, who objected the gas storage proposal, have expansion plans at the Hillhouse site, bringing high quality real jobs. I hope this does not put them off investing in our community. Halite’s possible 40 permanent jobs is a poor trade-off for all the other inward investment and job creation that could be attracted. If you live in the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency, which includes Knott End, Preesall, Pilling, Cockerham, Scorton and Forton, please always feel free to contact me: [email protected] or on (01524) 566551. SAINT AIDAN’S NEWSAs we broke up for the summer holiday, we looked back on many successes and achievements.Sports NewsSports Day was held on 7th July with many students involved in a range of events showing what athletic talent we have at Saint Aidan’s. The day ended with the traditional Tug-of-War between houses which always creates great excitement for the spectators. We were lucky with the weather and there were quite a few records broken with Babbage House winning overall for the second year running!Primary VisitorsOver the last month we invited primary school pupils from all over Fylde and Wyre to visit us at school to get a taste of what high school is like.

Year 5 pupils have enjoyed a series of workshops in subjects such as Media, Technology, Science, Astronomy, Art and Drama. Also we had over 130 pupils from local Church of England Primaries to share a full day with us. They had workshops in ICT, Technology, Art, Science, Astronomy, MFL and Ash Dickinson, a ‘Rap’ poet. The day finished with a special celebration service in the school hall. It was a real pleasure to have so many pupils visit us from so many different schools. They were all so enthusiastic and a real credit to their primary schools.South African Exchange VisitDuring the last two weeks of the term, 15 students and two teachers came over from our partner school in Cape Town.

SAINT AIDAN’S NEWS (cont)There were many activities planned for them to experience a different culture as well as them taking part in lessons. They visited Chester, Liverpool, had a day trip to London as well as experiencing the Great Eccleston Agricultural Show. One of the final events organised was a Fair Trade Fashion Show to raise money so seven children can attend school in South Africa. The students organised the whole event guided by Mrs Kalinski and it was a fantastic evening which ended with a musical item from our South African friends.Stealing the Show!Saint Aidan’s students got the chance to tell everyone about what a great school we have at the recent Great Eccleston Agricultural Show. Again we were lucky with the weather and

we attracted lots of interest in what we have to offer at our school. Not only did we have our very own stall but we also had over 50 entries into the different categories in the show. Over 20 of our students were placed first, second or third in the category that they entered.Date for your diary!Open Evening - Wed 16th Sept. It is time again for parents to make decisions about which high school is right for their son/daughter. Parents and their children are most welcome to come and look round the school, ask questions and meet students. We believe Saint Aidan’s is the best high school in the district, so please do visit us to see why.Sue MarlandAssistant [email protected]

As regular readers will know, soroptimist’s, globally and locally, work to give the opportunity of basic Health (clean water), Food, and Education to women and their children. This months’ article links the two together.

Every year the President of our North West region chooses a charity. This years’ president, Tessa, has chosen Water Aid. The major fund raising event will be a Fashion Show and Beauty evening at The Crofters Hotel Garstang in the Autumn.Individual clubs also contribute through smaller club events. On Sunday 26th July S.I. Garstang enjoyed a top quality gourmet lunch, hosted by one of our joint Presidents Nora in her home and garden, with homemade

savoury pies and salads, very naughty but delicious sweets, all washed down with wine or fruit juice – sunshine, laughter and friendship - what a great way to raise over £90 towards the Regional President’s charity total. Why Water Aid?This charity has achieved an enormous amount over the years since its inception – piping fresh water to villages, saving women and children walking miles every day to collect water for their daily needs. It has provided villages with toilet blocks. Presently it is working to provide schools with toilets for both boys and girls as it was noticed that girls’ education was halted once they reached puberty through lack of suitable toilet provision at school. This has now become one of its objectives and one which soroptimist’s are keen to support.

Message from Dr Steve Lynch It has been an extremely busy time and I am glad to say we have successfully got our new appointment system up and running. No major change project is ever going to be without teething problems but so far so good and we have received a lot of extremely positive feedback.Having had eight weeks to observe the new system in operation, we have had a chance to crunch the figures and run an audit so we understand the levels of demand and on what days patients are making the most telephone calls. The graph above shows our demand levels accordingly. It shows the number of telephone consultations over a two week period. We have continuously been monitoring the number of telephone consultations and every two weeks we compare the number received

with the preceding two week period. The numbers of calls received are very consistent and we have been able to average them out to create the above data.As you can see, Mondays are head and shoulders our busiest day. If all the telephone calls received in any given week were leveled out so we received the same amount each day we would not have a problem dealing with patient demand each day. However, Mondays are producing such an incredible

spike in our number of calls received that we are struggling to cope with demand each Monday.I do think our patients can help here. If your telephone call to the surgery on a Monday is of a routine nature and it can wait until later in the week, until either Tuesday or Wednesday, this would help spread out the demand and ensure that we are able to call back patients in a timely fashion. Obviously some telephone calls cannot be deferred until later in the week and depending on the severity of the problem patients will of course have to call on a Monday; but if it is a routine problem and it can wait until Tuesday or Wednesday this would ensure we meet demand levels accordingly and have a GP call you back within two hours; and normally much quicker than that.So far this has proven to be a good system but with your help in perhaps deferring routine calls on a Monday, we can definitely make improvements which will benefit everyone. Please be aware that we have changed our telephone numbers as follows:Main Line Appointments (01253) 951165Automatic Repeat Prescription Line (01253) 951956Thank you for all your patience in allowing us to implement the new appointment system and with your continued support we hope to even out the days telephone calls are received so that we can meet demand and achieve our aspiration to call you back within two hours. PILLING WI

Every contact leaves a trace – I touch your hand, you touch hers, my DNA remains on both your hands. This example was related to Pilling WI members and guests at their July open meeting by forensic scientist Caroline Eames. She believes that the discovery of DNA is the most important agent used in crime investigation since the introduction of fingerprinting and has led to old, unsolved murders being re-investigated and solved.Contrary to what we see on TV there is little glamour for real life scientists, but being covered from head to foot means that, when seen on the news, she and her colleagues remain unidentifiable.Women’s attributes – an attention to detail for instance - has led to an increase in the number of girls being attracted to studying the science and, as professionals, being accorded the same respect as their male counterparts. This is an improvement since the 1970’s when Caroline’s career began. Thanks were proposed by Frances Connolly and the competition for a Murder Mystery Novel Title was won by Lena Tooth, runners up being Helen Curwen, Marlene Connolly and Vera Redman.Arrangements were finalised for the trip to Morecambe’s historic Midland Hotel where members were to enjoy afternoon tea followed by a guided tour of the listed building. Our next meeting will be held on Thurs, 27th Aug at 7:30pm in St. John’s Church Hall and our speaker will be a member of the Coastguard Service who will judge our competition for a “Nautical Item”.Whatever the weather we hope you will consider joining us for a delicious supper and good company. Former members and guests are always welcome.Frances Connolly

SSRA

Stalmine with Staynall Residents’ Assoc

Congratulations go to all our competition winners during our third SSRA Festival Week and on Gala Day.

A huge thank you goes also to everyone who participated and supported us in any way.

The September meeting will see the planning of our now annual autumn events, including the second lantern making family evening in preparation for the Christmas lights switch on.

Also, look out for the next Children’s Nearly New Table Top Sale and information on table bookings etc.

We would like to thank the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund who kindly supported our request for funding for the three annual editions of our SSRA newsletter, ‘The Stalminer’.

As you know, we are also trying to raise money to buy external defibrillator boxes for Stalmine’s two defibs as they would then be available for use 24/7.

The SSRA and Stalmine School are working together on this and any additional contributions or fundraising ideas would be most welcome. Defibs do save lives and it could be any of us or our families and friends who could be in need one day.

Many thanks go to Chris Hyde for supporting us with the necessary information and contacts.

The SSRA would like to congratulate the Village Gala Committee who did a wonderful job this year. What an amazing day and the result of a massive amount of hard work. No doubt next year will be even better.

Information on all SSRA events will be available on either our Facebook page, in McColl’s shop, Wyre Villa, from Stalmine

School, the Church, Main Attraction Hairdressers and the Seven Stars.

The Stalmine with Staynall Residents’ Assoc committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm at the Seven Stars, Hallgate Lane and all are welcome to come along and join us.

For enquiries, ideas or suggestions please contact Pauline Andrews 07808 058 097, Ann Ralph 07713 852 639, Peter Swarbrick (01253) 702675.

You can also visit our Facebook page: Stalmine with Staynall Residents’ Association (SSRA) or via our post box in McColl’s shop.

Please note that there is no August meeting.

The dates of our next two meetings are Tues 1st Sept & 6th October

PILLING BAND

The band’s recent activities started with the Fleetwood Carnival on 20th June when, perhaps as an omen as to what follows, we got wet. Not heavy rain, but the kind of drizzle which wets you sneakily. Needless to say, as soon as we finished it cleared up.

The following day marked the Kirkby Lonsdale annual Entertainment Contest which is held each year in the village square.

We were taken there once again in style by Mike of Avalon Coaches and reached Kirkby Lonsdale early on a rather dull threatening morning.

There were seven competing bands and we were drawn to play number six in order of play, so it was well into the afternoon before we commenced our march along the main street (where the man in the blue cap marks bands for deportment) and took our place in the tent.

The performance went well enough and the crowd certainly seemed to approve, so perhaps we were a little disappointed to learn that we had been placed third. However, we were really surprised to find that we had won the first prize for deportment! Pilling have only ever won that once before and we always thought that was a fluke. It did just about manage to keep fine, so overall not a bad day out.

Stalmine and Eagland Hill Galas followed, after which we were due to make our annual appearance at Happy Mount Park in Morecambe.

Last year we were unable to play at all because of high winds which had blown a tree down. However, this year the day started out really well, warm, sunny, lots of people......but don’t be fooled, 40 minutes into our concert the clouds had gathered, there was one clap of thunder and the heavens opened, emptying the park in three minutes, whilst

we had to rescue our music (some of which needed ironing later), put our music stands away and carry 26 chairs to the storage hut.

All this took 10 minutes, by which time everyone was well and truly soaked. The Happy Mount had lived up to it’s name again!

The following weekend saw us at Preesall Gala which is something of a marathon, one or two players who had not done it before were suitably impressed by the length of the march.

Many of the band were refreshed later at a barbecue kindly put on by Solo Horn player Jen Ormrod where - guess what - it rained! Never mind, a good time was had by all as we got wet inside as well as out.

One week after that and we were in Heysham where we were joined by a choir from Kidderminster in a concert at the Wesleyan

Page 72: Over Wyre Focus - August 2015

72 Did you know that you can read the “Green Book” on line?

PILLING BAND (cont)Church there. The band accompanied the choir in two items which was quite pleasing.

Finally, to bring you up to date, the band attended an open air ‘Songs of Praise’ service at Whitechapel where the most gorgeous cakes were served afterwards.

This brief account shows how busy the band is at this time of year and, when some players are unavailable for various reasons, how difficult it can be to find deputies, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have helped us out at our recent engagements.

On another subject, the work of making good the road leading to the bandroom is about to start.

It marks another achievement made possible by the huge fund raising efforts of Jim Redman and the generosity of you, our public supporters. We all appreciate this and hope to play our part in the local community for many years to come.

As always the band can be contacted via the website www.pillingband.com or the Secretary Emily Hallett on 07710 983 916

By the time you are reading this our judging date for North West In Bloom, July 20th, will be long gone but as I’m writing this on the weekend before the judging, the wind is howling around the house and the In Bloom team are hoping that the plants will survive our unpredictable weather.

As with all Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) competitions there are four levels of awards: Bronze, Silver, Silver Gilt and Gold.

For the last two years we have been awarded Silver Gilts but this year, well, we have to wait and see.

However even though the judging is over we will continue to keep the flowerbeds and planters looking as good as possible.

One evening when we were out watering and weeding someone asked us why we did this. Our immediate response was that we want to make the area look attractive but events this weekend have made us question why we go to this amount of trouble.

When checking the planters near the ferry slipway for wind damage it was found that approximately 6 plants had been removed from two of the planters.

This was the third incident this summer of plants being removed. In fact not only are the plants removed but also the compost surrounding them. Some of the plants we have been able to replace but a couple of the planters near the ferry now look a little lopsided.

Why anyone would choose to damage the planters is beyond us but once again it is a case of the very few spoiling things for the rest of the community.

For further information on the In Bloom team contact Yvonne McCann (01253) 811364 or Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519

HAMBLETON WI

The Stay Safe Theatre Show with producer Andy Cooke came to this month’s meeting complete with four actors and a door!

With a variety of scenes, each highlighting common situations whereby unsuspecting householders become victims of fraud or theft, advice was on hand to help us all keep safe from unscrupulous traders and thieves.

Andy advised us not to use door-knocking tradesmen, only use recommended people and always get two or three quotes otherwise your cash would just disappear.

‘Help Direct’ was a good source. Reputable tradesmen do not expect to be paid in cash on the day. They will always wait two or three days to be paid.

We were advised to have a list of useful telephone numbers by the phone and only use these to verify authenticity of callers.

United Utilities have a password scheme to help verify legitimate staff and why have large amounts of cash in the house as your money is always safer in the bank?

To sum up, you need to be on your guard at all times, but to make life easier put a sign in your window to say you do not want doorstep salesmen calling. The Mail Preference Service can stop unsolicited begging letters arriving and remember to keep doors and windows locked.

OVER WYRE SINGERS INVITATION

Word has got back to us that there’s quite a few of you out there who enjoy singing in the shower.

Well don’t be shy, put some clothes on, dry your hair, and come and sing with us instead.

We’re looking forward to welcoming new members when we hold a special social evening on Thurs Sept 3rd at the Squash Club in Knott End.

Everyone is welcome and there are no auditions – we just need you to be able to hold a tune.

We rehearse for two concerts a year – our popular Christmas event and our Spring Concert.

Our music is varied from contemporary to choral and we’re a friendly bunch who simply share a love of music.

If you can’t make the social evening then our new season begins on Thurs 10th Sept at 7:30pm in the Knott End Methodist Church Hall – come along and help us make our Christmas Concert even more magical.
