We are now busy organising our International evening. The money raised will go to ‘Happy Homes’, a charity in Kenya which takes in orphan children and teaches and feeds them.Members attended the District 19 Rally a couple of weeks ago and a charity called ‘School in a Bag’ was explained to us. This is a charity that the District are supporting.Bagsarefilledwithitemsthatareneeded for school, but they are packed so that every child has exactly the same, so that one child doesn’t have more than another. We also took Rotary shoe boxes with us to theRally.Thesewerefilledwithlittlepresentsfor children who would have nothing for Christmas. It is a lovely job collecting items for these boxes. It would be really nice to see their faces when they open them. Knitted blankets, spectacles and ink cartridges are also collected. The International Aid Trust pick up all these things and distribute them for us.If you are interested to find out more howwe do this please contact our Secretary Maureen Garstang on (01995) 604336

PILLING BANDThe main event on which to report this month was the ‘Variety Bandbox’ concert which was held on Fri 9th Oct in Preesall. Organiser Jim Redman ensured that the venue was full to capacity and the band performed a varied programme, the second half featuring music from the film ‘Brassed Off’. The proceeds were shared with the Macmillan Cancer Support charity who received a cheque for £500.A loyal band supporter, Norman Boyes, has reached the great age of ninety years and his family have asked that the following tribute be included in our newsletter.“I would like to thank the Band for a wonderful evening on 9th October which marked the start of my ninetieth birthday celebrations. The music was to the usual high standard and it was lovely to see so many people at

the event. “I should like to offer my special thanks for the marvelous birthday cake that was presented to me as well as to Jim and Lilian Redman and the Busy Bees who had worked very hard to ensure the evening was a success”. The Afternoon Tea with the Welsh Soprano Marilyn Lloyd held at the Parish Hall Preesall on Sat 17th Oct was well supported and £560 was raised towards the Band Development Fund. OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY

Another month has passed by! We arewell into our painting now. ‘Woody’ has demonstrated to us some valuable portrait techniques, how to measure features, capture facial expression and put in tone. He even came the following week and set up his projector with an image on the screen to help us practise.

A landscape painting in watercolour is always a pleasure to achieve. Ken Weigh helped us to do this with a work-along which made it much easier. Let’s hope we will have some ready to show at the next exhibition. This will take place in Knott End Library during November. We hope you will come and visit to see the work we have completed so far.November promises to be an interesting month. First, two of our members will help us to experiment in card making using inks and later in the month there will be a pastel opportunity from a well established artist. We try to vary the programme to suit everyone. However the break for tea is always popular, a chance to have a chat and catch up with friends. The November classes are as follows:Tues 3rd Nov ‘Watercolour Techniques Work Along’ with Sylvia and Rosemary. NB: Please bring your paints and brushes.Tues 10th Nov Follow-on Practical or Free Choice.Tues 17th Nov ‘Pastel Landscape Work Along’ with Ray Swift, so bring pastels, pastel paper and newspapers. Tues 24th Nov Follow-on Practical or Free ChoiceDec 1st is our Christmas Lunch DateWe now meet at St Bernard’s Church Hall, Hackensall Road, Knott End each Tuesday 2:00pm - 4:00pm. Guests are welcome with £2 entry and a view to joining.Sandra Langhorne (01253) 813739

pumpfluidsthroughoutourbody, encouragingboththebloodtoflowandthelymphtomovewhich maintains our immune system. Of course, as we move our muscles contract and expand pumping blood and nutrients in and waste products out. Wearemainlymadeupofwaterandfluidsand movement encourages all this fluidto move properly. This myriad of pumping movements and exchanges is happening billions of times over and over everyday... whatanastoundingthingourbodyis! If we take a step back in time to our evolution one can see how critical movement was for survival. Without an ability to move and function effectively we would not be able to hunt or gather our food. We would not be able to build our shelters or clothe ourselves and if there was a threat we would have to attack or retreat to survive… movement was indeed life.Of course times have moved on but our body is still the same as that of humans from thousands of years ago and a very modern problem is that we have created a society where we do not need to move. We can sit and press buttons to get all that we need. If we wish to go anywhere we have machines to take us where we wish to go. Our body is no longer moving as it should because it does not have to. Yet our body demands movement for optimum health. Our joints are given nutrients when we move (you can get arthritis from lack of use as opposed to from wear and tear) and our muscles and tissues strengthen when we demand movement from our body. Conversely, when we stay still we quite simply waste away. Did you know that one week of bed rest causes half of your muscle bulk to disappear. We know that exercising your body to increase your heart rate for at least 30 minutes

As an osteopath I spend much of my working day observing the human body, how it moves and listening with my hands for signs of a problem.I then spend my time using my hands to correct these problems which are often quite subtle but can lead to pain and suffering.I use the phrase ‘movement is life’ a lot in my work, whether that is when I nag a patient to change their lifestyle or simply to remind myselfofwhatIamdoing!‘Movement is life’ may seem rather simplistic but it is profoundly important to the human body and our health. Even at the cellular level there is movement going on in our body all the time. Chemicals, nutrients and minerals are constantly being exchanged between cells to maintain our ability to function. At a different level our heart is contracting to

five times a week dramatically reduces thechance of you getting heart disease, cancer and a myriad of other illnesses. This is not because of some magical hocus pocus….it is BECAUSE YOUARE BUILT TO MOVE!I liken moving your body to the image of a babbling brook - whilst sitting still, staring at the television is the equivalent of a stagnant pond.So which do you wish to be? A babbling brook or a stagnant pond? This is your choice. Even if you have health problems and injuries you can move your body and your body will start to enjoy this and bring you rewards. An ancient Greek philosopher whose name escapes me once said, “If you are not prepared to make time for your health, be prepared to make time for your illness.” Now is decision time…Nick Tofalos

new member of the family. Withanewbabyboyandafifteenmontholdtoddler dishwashers and washing machines are on overdrive and there isn’t a surface in the house where there isn’t evidence of small children in residence. Naturally in our own home this has led to even less time for removing leaves, clearing out raised vegetable beds, pruning and weeding. If, unlike us, you have a bit more spare time on your hands then there are other things still to do this month. They include cutting back perennials that have died down, dividing herbaceous perennials and rhubarb crowns, moving tender plants including aquatic ones, into the greenhouse, planting out spring cabbages, pruning climbing roses and renovating old lawns or creating new grass areas by laying turf.I hope many of you got creative with your

Call me unreasonable, but at this time of year I have a real problem with leaves. We don’t have any trees in our front garden, yet we seem to attract lots of other people’s autumn debris. Why can’t leaves stay in their own gardens? Instead they migrate wherever they please, making the place look like it needs a good vacuum. Irritatingly the minute you sweep up the soggy visitors from Number 20, they’re replaced by some new unwanted guests from Number 33. Very frustrating. Well boringly, as you probably know, it’s cleaning up time. All that tedious washing of pots, sluicing the greenhouse, scrubbing the tools and making sure that everything is spick and span for the new growing year in four or fivemonth’stime. For us, cleaning up seems to have become a fulltime occupation having been joined by a

pumpkins this year. Interestingly the damp weather in August affected pumpkin quality and yield – some farmers lost half of their produce. Retailers won’t take any fruits with minor blemishes or soft spots as these progress into full-blown issues in the depots and in the ambient temperature of stores. However you could always have a go a growing your own and now is a good time to start thinking about it. Pumpkins are great fun to grow with children. They are easy to cultivate, but need a sunny

position, plenty of water and shelter from cold winds. Oneofthefinestsightsofautumniscolourfulpumpkins ripening in the sun - they are an essential part of Halloween and also attractive in the garden. Once harvested, pumpkins can be used for delicious soup and for roasting. Seeds can be bought in most garden centres and online and should be sown indoors in April or outdoors in late May or early June.I’ll remind you all next year, around the time the daffodils are making an appearance.Until then, get the marigolds and the disinfectant out and think of me as I’m cleaning sticky finger marks off everyhousehold surface.HappyGardening!Alison Tarpey-Black (01253) 810039 / 07738 515 846

Last month we covered scam phone calls (again) and I promised further details on dodgy emails or screen messages.

There are a number of different ways fraudsters will try to con you using emails.

Some, known as ‘phishing’, pretend to come from banks, credit card companies, online shops and auction sites and other trusted organisations.

They usually try to trick you into going to the site, for example to update your password to avoid your account being suspended. The embedded link in the email itself goes to a website that may look like the real thing but is actually a fake designed to trick victims into entering personal information.

Sometimes the email will be the result of a company having been hacked – for example, the bad guys might write to you and refer to a recent order which you really have made, saying that you just need to reconfirmyourpayment details. There will then be a link taking you to a page asking for credit card and other valuable personal information.

Fake emails often (but not always):

• have a different email address from the trusted organisation’s normal website address

• use a non-specific greeting such as“Dear customer” instead of your proper name

• threaten that unless you act immediately your account may be closed

• give a website link which seems very similar to the proper address - but even a single character difference means a different website

• request personal information such as username, password, date of birth or bank details

Other email tricks involve trying to sell you things, hoax charity appeals, chain messages

or simply ‘here are those pictures’.

Don’t: • open or forward emails which you

suspect are spam• open attachments from unknown sources• respond to emails from unknown sources • make purchases or charity donations in

response to spam email• click on ‘remove’ or reply to unwanted

email • click on links in emails from unknown

sources.

Instead move your mouse pointer over the link to reveal its true destination, usually displayed in a popup bubble or in the bottom left corner of your screen. If this is different from what is displayed in the text of the link then there may be a problem.

Think twice – before you click on any links in an email or before you open any attachments. Even if you know the sender, make sure it is something you are expecting as they could have been hit by a virus or other problem which then sends out these dodgy messages.

If in doubt, contact them to check it is a valid email or ask someone else for a second opinion. Please don’t be frightened to ask - it’s always far, far better to be safe than sorry.

Screen popups – if you get a message on your screen saying that problems have been found and asking you to ring a number to get themfixed:DON’T! It’s just a different version of the scam IT/Microsoft support call.

Next month - passwords.

Don’t forget - if you have any questions or concerns about security, then please do give me a ring for a quick chat.

OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUBAt the final meeting of the year, Julie Valegave an informative illustrated talk on ‘Garden Birds’.

Julie has worked for the RSPB for 10 years and is now based at the Ribble Discovery Centre at Fairhaven Lake, Lytham-St Anne’s. Unlike most RSPB locations, this is a Visitor Centre but not a Conservation Area.

Julie explained that even though the main work of the RSPB is in relation to birds, it has now expanded its focus with its new mission statement of ‘Giving Nature a Home’. Thus aiming to promote safe habitats for all nature.

She provided various ideas for encouraging wild life into thegarden; the first onebeing- don’t be too tidy! Don’t cut the lawn toooften and leave the grass slightly long. Don’t be too eager to remove the seed heads from plants. Put up bird feeders or provide bowls where birds can have a drink or a bath.

When putting up nest boxes don’t place them too close to bird feeders. Birds don’t want predators to see them going repeatedly from a food source to a nest.

She provided the members with a wealth of information from her personal experiences which made for a very interesting evening.

in civil registers.

Mariella then gave us a rundown of the most popular baby names from 1904 to the present day. William and Elizabeth have always been in the top ten.

Andrew, who is the Registrar for Blackpool then told us all about Festival House. It is a new building on the sea side of the promenade where register office weddingstake place. Instead of a hurried half hour civil ceremony they make it a ‘happy day for everyone’ taking over an hour in a modern setting with either the Sea View room for ten peopleortheTowerViewroomforsixtyfivepeople.

With gold metal tiles on the outside, unvarnished pine on the inside, fuchsia upholstered chairs and bright yellow walls it is indeed modern.

‘The Life of a Registrar’ was the topic this week. Mariella has been a Deputy Registrar for fourteen years recording births, marriages and deaths at Blackpool.

She gave us a brief history of civil registrations starting with Henry Vlll in 1538 telling local parishes to keep records of numbers of people who lived in a parish, who was working etc.

So began Parish Registers, although each minister entered the information differently.Catholic and Non-conformist marriages were not recorded.

The wealthy landowners needed to know if their heirs were legitimate so in 1754 Lord Hardwick decreed that all Non-conformist marriages should be in the presence of a registrar. Only C of E needed to record births, marriages and deaths. Then in 1837 all births, marriages and deaths were recorded

Andrew gave us some statistics; Church marriages have plummeted by a half, divorce is less, people tend to marry in their 30s now. Blackpool’s marriage rates have gone up by 50% as people come from all over to get married in this new venue.

Veronica Parker gave the vote of thanks. Competition of a happy photo was won by Sue Cross.

Janet explained that Skye is coming to the end of her working life but at present she is reluctant to have a new dog and is hoping she will be able to keep Skye. Even though dogs are matched to people, the dog does belong to that person. It is Janet’s intention for Skye to see her retirement out with her when she is replaced with a new working companion.

An amazing lady with an equally amazing companion.

It’s the AGM on Wed 4th Nov at St Oswald’s Church Hall at 7:30pm. Please see the notice board at the AGM meeting for forthcoming events.

I don’t know where this year has gone but just a quick recap this having been not just the national Centenary Year but Pilling Lane’s 80th Year.

On Wed 7th Oct we had a superb speaker from Dogs for the Hard of Hearing called Janet with her companion, Skye.

Janet gave us the history behind hearing dogs and that initially all the dogs trained were rescue dogs but as things have progressed thedogsarenowbredandtrainedspecificallyforpeoplewithhearingdifficulties.

Janet gave us a demonstration of how Skye helps her in her day to day life. I am sure a lot of members or the general public don’t realise how having severe hearing loss impacts on a deaf person’s day to day living; for example when someone is at the door or the telephone rings.

Janet explained in detail how Skye helps her and goes everywhere with her including to work. She explained the complex process of how the dogs are trained and placed with each individual in great detail and how this

We started off with a wonderful exhibition at Knott End Library which was truly well organised and supported. Centenary Roses have been planted at the Cenotaph.

In recognition of the Centenary, we gave a full bursory to one of our members to attend Denman College and a very interesting report was given by the winning member.

WestartedourdaysoutwithatriptoDitchfieldGlass then off to the Lavender Fields at Harrogate and a well-attended Centenary Fair of all things WI, again at Harrogate.

We had a live screening in June at the Church Hall of the Centenary Celebrations at the Albert Hall followed by luncheon. Eva Cocker was our delegatè and attended the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of the Centenary of the WI.

We planted a flower bed in the village atthe end of Grassington Avenue with special thanks to all who helped plant and keep it watered throughout the summer.

Finally we had our 80th Birthday Party celebration at the Church Hall in September with our very own Calender Girls - most of whom celebrated their 80th Birthday this year. The male singer who provided some musical entertainment will never be the same.

A big thank you to everyone who has contributed or taken part in making this a very successful year.

The story of one of the last major battles on English soil is to be told to members and supporters of Garstang Historical Society at their November meeting.

Preston historian Dr Bill Shannon is to

give a lecture on the 1715 Battle of Preston, which witnessed troops loyal to King George defeat an invading army of Jacobites (mainly Scottish followers of the “Old Pretender” James Stuart of the ousted Stuart dynasty).

Dr Shannon’s talk will include details of the Jacobites’ march from Scotland to Preston - via Lancaster and Garstang - as well as focusingontheshort-livedfightinginPrestoncentre which resulted in the defeat of the invading army.

The talk, at Garstang United Reformed Church Hall is on Wed 11th Nov at 7:30pm. The date is relevant, being exactly 300 years to the week that the battle took place.

Entry is free to Garstang Historical Society members. The cost for non-members is £2 (including refreshments). All welcome. It is advised to arrive at the hall early as due to large numbers attending recent meetings have been standing room only.

HAMLETKirkham Grammar School

Something may be rotten in the state of Denmark – but Kirkham Grammar School’s latest theatrical venture ensured the sweet smell of success was in the air for its Drama students!

It was difficult to imagine howKGSDramacould top the success of ‘The Tempest’, but we should not have doubted it ... “Doubt thou the stars are fire; Doubt that the sun doth move; Doubt truth be a liar…..” but never doubt the ability of KGS pupils to astound us.

Over 60 pupils, from Year 9 upwards, enjoyed standing ovations for their thought-provoking performance of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy ‘Hamlet’, taking the audience on a roller-coaster ride of emotions and moving many to tears along the way.

Staff and pupils transformed the school’s mainhallintoastagesetbefittingTheBard, with Gertrude’s opulent, luxurious and gold-laden bedroom contrasting with the stark and bare graveside and incredible hand-painted back drop.

The costumes were equally lavish and timeless, with the girls gracing the stage in floatinggoldandsilvergownsand theboysdecked out in dapper morning suits.

Over Wyre Branch

It is now several months since a report was submitted and published on the activities of the Over Wyre Branch of the Royal British Legion

as well as information on what is happening nationally with regard to the ‘Legion’ and its Welfare Services.

The Branch has been represented at several shows and events throughout Lancashire.

We know that there are current and past service personnel living in the Over Wyre area as well as those who haven’t served but believe in what the Royal British Legion does and stands for. Membership costs just £16.00 per year but the good work that is done by The Royal British Legion is incalculable.

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges...

However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering...

Inowrealisewhatmadeitallsodifficult:itwastherealisationthattakingandacceptingthe responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make.

Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself:• Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities

like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’?

• Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff?

• DoIwanttoseecertificatesplasteredalloverthewallsordoIwanttobegreetedevery time I visit by the same familiar faces?

• Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate

If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself.

to the ravages of aging and the Over Wyre Branch – like many other organisations – is in need of new members.

We must strive to ensure that there will continue to be a Royal British Legion presence in Over Wyre, so that those who are eligible and require Legion assistance can turn to them in their time of need.

It will also ensure that the Poppy Appeal remains in existence to help those who served yesterday, today and tomorrow.

You do NOT have to have served in the Armed Forces to be a member of the Royal British Legion, only to believe in its aims and objectives.

The talk was on the build-up to the war and the involvement of Garstangservicemenintheconflict. On Sat Nov 7th at 7:00pm, the evening before Remembrance Sunday, Mr Smith will deliver his latest lecture. This time the topic will be “Women and the War: The Female World of 1914-1918.”The meeting, at Garstang Arts Centre, will be in two parts, separated by a refreshment break.Thefirstpartwillbedevotedtowomenand war work (at home and abroad), while the second part will be on women’s attitudes, sartorial history and emancipation. It is a strictly ticket only event. DOWN ON THE FARM“Farming with a wife is hard, farming without one is almost impossible”.

Henry BrewisThe daily life of a farmer’s wife or lady farmer is varied and never dull. Even the title is a source of ‘discussion’. According to my husband you can only be born a farmer not becomeone!

Farmers are a race apart, their lives revolve around: meal times, the weather, the animals, machinery and did I mention meal times?

I love my life, family and the farm, I wouldn’t changeathing.Wellmaybeafewthings!

Breakfast is a full English after four hours of milking or tractor work. This is a chance to discuss jobs for the day or whatever is the most urgent crisis. Help with the house work might involve putting the breakfast dishes in the general area of the sink (for modern men).

Our farm is a dairy farm. We retail the milk from our cows, much of it through local shops and businesses. We also have the Milk Bar on Hall Lane at St Michael’s.

This has been so much fun. It’s a joy to read peoples’ comments on the suggestions board, so positive and encouraging at a time when morale is so low in the dairy industry. We have had suggestions that we should sell everythingfromteabagstotoiletrolls!

My husband sets out the Milk Bar early in the morning, I’manowl not a lark! Then in theevening we bring most things indoors leaving emergency pints out over night. This is the part of the day when I feel like Arkwright from “Open All Hours”, I do tend to look up at the sky and think ‘It’s been a funny old day’.

COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS

Charity Fundraiser

On 27th July of this year I suddenly became very ill. I had been talking to my sister one minute, the next I was having a Cardiac Arrest. Luckily for me a neighbour of ours, who is a newly trained volunteer for the Community First Responders was called upon. If it hadn’t been for his expertise I wouldn’t be alive today. In recognition of this fact, I decided I needed

to give something back to the service which saved my life.On Fri 6th Nov there will be a Charity event at Knott End Working Men’s Club at 7:00pm. Entertainment will be provided by Buster Entertainmnets and will include Tombola, a Quiz,anAuction,RaffleandFacePainting.I am hoping this will raise much needed funds for training and vital equipment which will save many more lives for generations to come. This will also, hopefully, raise awareness in the local community for this great service. If anyone is interested in becoming a Community First Responder, there is more information at www.nwas-responders.infoIf anyone would like to make any donations please feel free to contact me. It would be even better if you could attend the event.Jill Maddison 07896 491 148

Autumn is now upon us and what little warm weather we did get this year is being faded out by cold, crisp mornings. This makes catching the train down to London first thing on aMonday

morningevenharder!

The Parliamentary recess which accompanies the Conference season always gives me the opportunity to get out and about in the constituency, which is always something I enjoy. I have also carried out surgeries recently where I have face-to-face meetings with constituents who have sought my help in relation to a number of issues.

Last week, I attended one of Wyre Councils regular management meetings. These meetings are a great opportunity for the Wyre

MPs to be updated on local issues and for Wyre Council’s Cabinet Members and Senior OfficerstohighlightconcernsdirectlytoMPs.

Maintaining a good working relationship with the local authority means that I can try and get the best outcomes for my constituents. It also enables me to feed back to Ministers how the Government’s policies are working on the ground.

A number of constituents have contacted me in relation to the sale and the proposed development of the Garstang Community Centre. Please be assured that I will continue to doall I can to reflect the viewsof constituents in my representations to Wyre Council. I also intend to meet the developer.

With regard to Halite, I am currently awaiting a response from the European Commission regarding the environmental issues which I highlighted. I will let you know as soon

Since May I have been made aware of the importance of good, reliable broadband by local people in both the rural and urban parts of my constituency. It’s important because in a growing digital economy, it is access to good and reliable broadband which can ‘make or break’ a new business start-up.

It’s also important for families as more and more schools are setting homework to be submitted online. And in an age of Netflix,iPlayer and Skype many people are feeling cut off by a lack of reliable broadband.

It would be remiss of me to not mention the farming community. This month I have met with local members of the National Farmers Union who shared with me many frustrations including broadband. The new Basic Payment Scheme, which was intended to be fully digitally administered and processed online,

Campaigning for Better Broadband in Wyre

One of the things that is raised with me, in every part of the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency,

but particularly in rural areas and Over Wyre, is the frustrations many people have with unreliable or non-existent broadband access.

The importance of broadband to households and businesses cannot be overestimated. In this day and age many deem it as essential as water, gas or electricity.

Where broadband access is poor it holds back our communities economically and socially. Many of you may not know that 4% of Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency experiences slow connections of less than 2 Mb/s, which is a percentage above the

CAT SMITH MP

Page 73: Over Wyre Focus Magazine - November 2015

has caused great frustration and expense to farmers without broadband provision. And when HMRC expect tax returns and PAYE to be completed online, farmers and rural communities are being excluded from this service. With government services increasingly being offered exclusively online the government needs to address this disenfranchisement of communities.

According to research by the Countryside Alliance, rolling out high speed broadband across the whole of the UK is the technological improvement that the British public most widely believe will impact positively on the UK economy. Yet 56% of rural people feel the Government is not doing enough to ensure it happens.

I doubt anyone hasn’t heard of the group of my local people, fed up with the poor service, who set up their own company – Broadband for the Rural North. B4RN are digging their own trenches and laying their own cables . They’ve achieved eye-watering speeds of up to 1000 Mb/s. No doubt some of the fastest internet speeds – not just in rural Britain, but also far faster than any urban service I’ve seentoo!

Reliable broadband access is essential for competitive and successful enterprises in a growing digital economy. When 12% of GDPisgeneratedonlinewearesignificantlyahead of other countries, but it is vital that the UK has access to effective and affordable broadband if we are to maintain this lead.

In Westminster I am working with cross-party groups of MPs campaigning for more action to ensure the whole country is online. I have spoken a couple of times in debates with the Minister responsible and will continue to fightforthisimportantinfrastructure.Ifyou’vehad any experiences with BT Openreach or another provider that you want to share with me I would be interested to hear from you.

CAT SMITH MP (cont)Police Cuts in Lancashire

I have had issues of anti-social behaviour and crime raised with me as I’ve been out and about Over Wyre and so I was very concerned when I have received news from Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, that policing in Lancashire faces an additional cut of 13.5% in its grant.

If these cuts are implemented we could see the Lancashire force reduced from 3,611 officers in 2010 to 1,699 by 2020.Thiswillwipe out Lancashire Police’s specialist and neighbourhood teams and mean their vital work protecting children from sexual exploitation, tackling crime and anti-social behaviour and even tackling major crime will be at risk.

I’m shocked by the scale of these government cuts - the service would be unrecognisable compared to the service provided today.

Lancashire Constabulary has been judged outstanding in the latest round of Police Force Inspections.

The PEEL Assessments, which stands for ‘Police Effectiveness, Efficiency andLegitimacy’, report on how well each force in England and Wales maximises the outcomes from its available resources with a focus on the overall question, ‘How efficient is theforce at keeping people safe and reducing crime?

Lancashire was judged as being outstanding in its efficiency at keeping people safe andreducing crime – the highest available category.

The report praised the Constabulary for keeping ‘a daily focus on prioritising threat, risk and harm issues while caring for the needs of vulnerable people’ and for its track record in in achieving savings and planning

The report comes a week after Chief Constable Steve Finnigan and Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw warned of the catastrophic impact of proposed changes to the police funding formula which, along with the forthcoming comprehensive spending review, could mean the Constabulary has to save an additional £87m on top of the £74m already made though to 2020.

Chief Constable Steve Finnigan said: “I am pleased that once again Lancashire has been recognised as an outstanding force and I am immensely proud that the work we do to keep people safe from harm, especially the most vulnerable members of our communities, has been recognised. This has always been my pledge to the people of Lancashire and it saddens me that this promise is now under threat

“We have worked hard since 2010 to meet the financialaskandthisreportagainshowsthatwe offer value for money and that we have an excellent track record of making savings and that we are planning well for future savings. I believe it also shows that the Constabulary has not been over-funded in previous years.

“We have put considerable effort into identifying ways to improve our services and we are taking a preventative approach to reducing future demand, with a number of innovative initiatives under our ‘Early Action’ programme.

“It is simply unacceptable that much of the good work which is highlighted in today’s report will be put at risk if the proposed cuts to our budget go ahead. We will be reduced to a force which has to prioritise emergency responses above all other calls with no capacity to be proactive. People and communities will be more vulnerable and at risk as a result.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw added: “Yet again we have an independent inspection report outlining just how well Lancashire Constabulary has done inmeetingsavingsandmakingefficiencies.Ithas named the force outstanding for the way it has handled the cuts and looking ahead through things like its early action initiative.

“This is another reason why the government should take notice of what we are saying about the future cuts. We have delivered and delivered what we have been asked for but we can’t keep taking out such huge amounts and keeping the force effective and viable into the future.

“Steve Finnigan and the Constabulary deserve full praise for what they have achieved.”

Excellent Exam SuccessSaint Aidan’s has always had a reputation for achieving high exam results and 2015 has been no different. The government requirement, the English Baccalaureate, is a way of judging students on the number of traditional GCSEs subjects they take which includes Maths, English, Science and Language and History or Geography.

Saint Aidan’s has topped this table, by over 10%, with the English Baccalaureate result having the highest exam result percentage under this requirement on the Fylde Coast this year. This also makes us the fourth highest non-selective school in the whole of Lancashire / Blackpool, based on this EBacc criteria.

‘It’s a Mystery’The Year 7 Family Challenge Evening held recently was a great success. ‘It’s a Mystery’ was hotly contested by teams made up of parents and children. Thinking skills and time management techniques were all employed as families competed and co-operated to be the best and enjoy themselves. The wine, squash and nibbles made it a most enjoyable evening for our families who seemed to really enjoy the opportunity of working together.

Harvest FestivalWe held our Harvest Festival Service in school and each of our 28 forms between them created a vast array of decorated harvest boxes containing a whole range of foods. Our harvest gifts were then donated to some of the local charities as in years past; the women’s shelter, the homeless shelter, Vincent House as well as local food banks and churches.

Pedestrian Crossing

A letter has been received from Ben Wallace MP enclosing a letter from Phil Durnell, Head of Highways at LCC.

In his letter Mr Durnell states that LCC is still in the process of carrying out trafficassessments and investigations which are unlikely to be completed until the end of 2015.

Once completed LCC will determine whether a zebra crossing should be put forward in the centre of the village.

He also states that any scheme put forward will have to compete to secure the limited funding that LCC has for road safety facilities. LCC will contact Mr Wallace to advise whether

COSMIC COLOURSWhat a remarkable mini ‘Indian Summer’ we all experienced. Along with the amazing cosmic colour of the rare, rusty red moon and its eclipse, came the wonderful sunsets and sunrises. I watched through a light mist, morning sunbeams illuminating millions of dew diamonds clinging to leaves and pine needles. Delicate gossamer spiders webs glittering with dew, the leaves turning to yellow, gold then red. Natures work of art. If fortunate, you may havecaughtaglimpseoftheAuroraBorealis!
