Hello, my name is Eleanor and in December 2016 I am fortunate enough to be visiting Utugi boys home in Kenya for the second time with Revd. Pam Wilding.

Every 2 years a team visits Utugi. The Utugi Boys home provides a base to support local street children within a Christian environment. It has classrooms and a multi purpose hall. It houses 58 boys aged 7-19 years who all attend local schools.

At the moment we are fundraising for a number of different projects and new building work plus spending time with the children.

Please come and support us with our car wash. For further information please contact me.

Mon 7th SeptSt Bernard’s Church Hall, Hackensall Rd,Knott End

The Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Dementia Friends’ programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.

‘Dementia Friends’ is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends programme to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.

We are passionate about increasing the awareness of dementia and how Dementia Friends Actions make all the difference. To this end we are running two Dementia Friends sessions for local businesses and residents of the Knott End/ Preesall area.

We are doing these sessions with the title ‘Let’s get Knott End Dementia Friendly’. The sessions are completely free and will last a maximum of one hour. The first session is 4:00pm - 5:00pm and the second session is 5:30pm - 6:30pm.

Each informal hour long session aims to give an understanding of what life with dementia is like.

If you would like to attend booking is essential either through the Demential Friends website at www.dementiafriends.org.uk or just give me a ring.

GARSTANG LADIES SPEAKERS CLUBGarstang Ladies is a very friendly speakers club which meets in the comfortable surroundings of the Garstang Country Hotel & Golf Club on the first and third Tuesday of each month from September to May. Meetings commence at 7:15pm for 7:30pm.

Don’t be put off by the title. If you come and join us you won’t be put under any pressure to speak, you can just enjoy listening to others.

However, I doubt you’ll be able to resist the opportunity to be heard for very long as the themes for each meeting are subjects we all encounter and about which we have something to say.

Our meetings are friendly and enjoyable with speeches ranging from the serious and thought provoking to the hilarious.

Walk the Lights for Rosemere Cancer Foundation!

Could you join us for a family friendly five mile walk of Blackpool’s famous Illuminations to raise funds for local cancer services?

We’re arranging a charity walk of the lights on Fri 11th Sept to raise vital funds and awareness of the charity.

The walk leaves Bispham at 7:00pm and the walkers will follow the lights of Blackpool’s Promenade past the Tower, the piers and the Pleasure Beach to finish at Starr Gate.

All of our walkers will be treated to biscuits and a brew at a nearby venue upon completion of the walk, and you should even (weather permitting) be able to enjoy the dazzling delights of the World Firework Championships lighting up the skies, as one of the handful of award-winning displays will be held on the same night!

The entry fee is just £5 (with children under the age of 5 going free). However Rosemere is reliant on charitable donations to continue our hard work, so any sponsorship you may be able to raise if you take part would be very gratefully received.

For any further information or an entry form please contact Amy on (01772) 523598 or by e-mail at [email protected].

There have been several reports of burglaries from outbuildings across the area with horse tack and power tools stolen. Buildings in the more remote rural spots seem to be most targeted. Please again report suspicious people and vehicles on 101.

You may have seen us out and about last month with the speed gun doing Community Roadwatch. Our aim is to reduce the number of vehicles breaking the speed limits in areas pointed out to us by residents where the biggest problems are.

This is hopefully an education issue and offenders will get a letter through the post as a warning about their excessive speed and will hopefully deter those willing to listen.

As mentioned many times before: the speed limits are there for a good reason which is to reduce casualties from road traffic collisions. Please take note!

With limited resources we do try and be where we are most needed at any particular time and try and respond to all reports of ASB so we would advise again that if there is a problem in your area we need to be knowing about it so please contact us on 101 at the time it is happening and give us a chance to deal with it.

Visit us on Facebook. To click and ‘like’ our page visit: www.facebook.com/GarstangNHP

Email us at [email protected] or you can contact us via our communications room on 101 or in an emergency 999.

I’m sure we all appreciate the time and effort of volunteers who tend the many ‘Britain in Bloom’ displays throughout our villages so it will come as a shock to reveal that one display in Hambleton has had items stolen from it, namely two large cups and saucers which were white with red poppies painted on them and filled with red flowers. Hard to believe isn’t?

Well another display has been stolen from the top of Carr End Lane at Stalmine! Two grey coloured ceramic pots in the shape of a small milk churn with plants. The hard-working volunteers would like them returning please so that they can be enjoyed by the rest of the appreciative residents!

If anyone has any information which could help us identify the offenders please phone us on 101 or phone Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The 100 years Tribute to the W.I. Feature

This is how the tribute looked from 20th July up to 31st July, when unfortunately a man and a woman in a van removed the cups and saucers for their own purposes. We would like them back (for more details see the police notes on the opposite page)!

In Bloom Judging

Judging day was the 20th July. The two judges were very impressed with our bedding flower

displays and were particularly impressed with the sense of community, that all the small tubs with dedications were donated by Hambleton residents and that we have working parties, including the local children, to help us keep the village and churches looking their best.

They also admired the fact that we had new features every year including the Lord Kitchener statue and the ‘Lest we Forget‘ Memorial and new notice board plus the W.I. feature at Ryecroft Corner.

Keep the good work up!

I have been to visit the treatment centre today to see the measures which are being taken to ensure that this issue is resolved as soon as possible and our water is safe to drink again.

As I write, United Utilities have eradicated the bug from the Treatment Centre and are now testing to ensure that the whole network of pipes is flushed and the water received in our homes is safe to drink again.

During my visit I learned about the measures United Utilities have been taking and what will be done to prevent future incidents.

I was pleased to meet some of the workers at the Treatment Centre, many of whom have been working 24 hour shifts. United Utilities has agreed to pay compensation to those affected and is currently working on the finer detail of how the compensation would be delivered.

I hope you have been enjoying the summer and the many events and sights Wyre has to offer.

After the election campaign (far too long in my opinion!)

I managed to get some time off in North Wales. While the weather was disappointing the children loved it.

Tap Water

I know that local residents will have been affected by the requirement to boil tap water before consumption.

As you may know, a microscopic organism called Cryptosporidium has been found at the United Utilities Franklaw Water Treatment Centre in Catterall.

Punch Taverns

Punch Taverns Ltd have decided to appeal against Wyre Council’s decision to refuse them planning permission for a convenience store, to be located on the car park of The Shovels Inn in Hambleton.

Given my concerns about the implications of the proposed development on highways safety, I have written to the Planning Inspectorate to make my objections known. I would encourage local residents to do the same.

NatWest Closure

I am disappointed that the Royal Bank of Scotland has decided to proceed with the closure of the Natwest branch in Knott-End in September.

It is a cruel irony that the bank had used the branch for their advertising campaign back

in 2011 when they promised not to close the last bank in town. The Natwest branch is, of course, Knott-End’s only bank.

While not in my constituency, I know residents from Stalmine use the branch, as the next closest bank is in Poulton.

I wrote several weeks ago to the Chief Executive of Natwest to put forward the case for the bank remaining open, but the bank seems set on proceeding with the closure.

I have been informed that while the closure will go ahead, a mobile bank will visit Knott-End and it has been agreed that the Post Office will offer banking services. While not ideal, I do hope these measures will mean that local residents and traders can continue to carry out their banking in Knott-End.

PILLING & OVER WYRE RUNNING CLUBDo you run or jog for pleasure? Would you like to join a small, friendly group that meets each week? Pilling and Over Wyre Running Club meets every Tuesday night at The Golden Ball in Pilling.

Set up three years ago by joggers and runners from Pilling and surrounding villages, the Club is very much non-competitive,

whilst aiming to be supportive to anyone who wishes to jog or run for pleasure, whatever their reasons.

Since joining many members have found that meeting every week has really helped their motivation as we all recognise that sometimes it can be very difficult to keep running with both busy lives and bad weather.

So why not come along and join us on a Tuesday night? For those starting or returning to jogging or running we meet at 6:30pm, with a 7:00pm start for more experienced runners.

We never leave a runner unaccompanied and many members go on to progress from the earlier group to the later start.

The Club is a affiliated to the Association of Running Clubs (ARC) whilst annual membership for 16 years+ is just £10 (payable after three sessions).

We ask that any members under 16 are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please just turn up on a Tuesday night.

CANVASSERS NEEDED IN WYREYour Council Needs You!

That’s the message from Wyre Council which is looking for people who would like to earn money carrying out a door-to-door canvass of local households.

Areas where extra help is needed are:

• Fleetwood (Park Ward and Pharos Ward Rural Areas)

• Calder Ward (including Bowgreave and Calder Vale)

• Garstang Ward (including Cabus and Nateby)

• Wyresdale Ward (including Bleasdale Forton and Nether Wyresdale).

Canvassers will be working for the Council’s electoral registration office and they are needed to help with the compilation of the annual Register of Electors. The role involves calling on those households who do not return their electoral registration forms that were delivered recently.

This is a vital part of the democratic process because people who are not on the register cannot vote. This is particularly important as the Police and Crime Commissioner Elections are due to be held on 5th May 2016.

The amount of payment depends on the area canvassed and full training will be given.

Anyone interested should contact Andrea Mullin on (01253) 887257, email [email protected] or visit Wyre Civic Centre, Breck Road, Poulton-le-Fylde, FY6 7PU.FOCUS MAGAZINE: AUTUMN DEADLINES• Oct Issue (out 2nd Oct): 21st Sept• Nov Issue (out 30th Oct): 19th Oct• Dec Issue (out 27th Nov): 16th Nov

In addition to the sporting aspects of country life, there will be a marquee dedicated to rural crafts and a ‘pop-up’ country gastro pub, as well as a traditional beer tent and a food village.

It will sell locally sourced, artisan take-out and take-home hot meals, breads, jams, preserves and other home-grown and home-made produce.

Next to it will be a shopping hub where visitors will be able to buy everything from four wheel drive vehicles to country clothing for the whole family from leading local names such as Malmo Guns.

The stories behind some of the most exciting historical and archaeological discoveries in Lancashire are to be told to members and supporters of Garstang Historical Society at the first meeting of their new season.

The group resumes its monthly lectures on Wed 9th Sept at 7:30pm with an illustrated talk on ‘Lancashire’s Hidden Histories’ by the county’s Museums Conservation Manager Heather Davies.

Among the finds she will talk about is the

Silverdale Viking Hoard, a collection of treasures discovered by a metal detector enthusiast buried in a field at Silverdale in 2011.

The hoard included included 200 items, including beautifully crafted jewellery together with coins from several Viking kingdoms of Britain, from Europe and even Arabia.

Also included were 141 fragments of arm-rings and ingots which had been chopped into smaller pieces and used by the Vikings as money.

The society’s monthly lectures are being held on the second Wednesday of the month at Garstang United Reformed Church Hall.

GARSTANG UNPLUGGED2015 sees Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin, winners of the 2014 BBC Folk Award, embarking on an exciting new project. They plan on recording their new album, ‘Watershed’, with an extended line up.

“We’ve honed our sound as a duo and do a lot of multi-tasking to enlarge that sound, but when we heard these guys performing we knew we wanted to involve them in our next project” says Hannah.

They first met bass player, Matt Downer playing with legendary Welsh band Jamie Smith’s ‘Mabon’ and soon had him working on their last studio album, ‘Mynd’.

“Working with Matt is a real pleasure,” says Phil, “He’s an incredibly intuitive musician with echoes of Danny Thompson in his sound.”

James Taylor completes the line-up on percussion and vibraphone. Phil says, “We saw him performing with singer-songwriter Sean Taylor, and couldn’t get over the sensitivity of his playing and his constant innovation - you’ve never seen someone

NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEKENDHeritage Open DaysSat 12th & 13th Sept

Heritage Open Days 2015 marks a fresh start for England’s biggest festival of history.

It is a fantastic way to discover a new side of a familiar site or building, uncovering secrets and unlocking areas not usually open to the public.

To mark National Heritage Weekend, Pilling Old Church will be open from 12:00 noon

to 4:00pm and Cockersand Abbey Chapter House from 12:00 noon to 5:00pm.

Pilling Old Church is a Georgian church dating from 1717 and contains the original pulpit, font and named family pews.

Cockersand Abbey Chapter House dates from the early 13th Century. It was used as a mausoleum by the Dalton family during the 18th and 19th Centures. It is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Help to celebrate our wonderfully diverse local history and engage with the hidden histories on our doorstep.

The venues will be manned by volunteers from Pilling Historical Society.

Is your body too acidic? And if it is do you know what this means?

There is a school of thought that the modern western diet causes too much acidity in our body which creates the fertile soil for disease to take hold in our body.

The jury is out on this, mainly because research is fairly thin on the ground. This is for obvious reasons - nobody makes a profit from you changing your diet to help your health. Sad but true!

Our body is remarkably good at balancing our acid-alkali levels but from what I can see, constantly making taxing demands on it by eating acid forming foods causes attrition and will eventually affect our health.

The foods you’re supposed to eat on the alkaline diet are good for you: some fruit and lots of vegetables and lots of water. Avoiding

sugar and processed foods is healthy, weight-loss advice too.

There is some evidence that a diet low in acid-producing foods like animal protein and bread and high in vegetables and fruit can help prevent kidney stones, keep bones and muscles strong, improve heart health and brain function, reduce low back pain, and lower risk for colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes.

Your choices are the key to your health, regardless of genetics and age and here are some easy ways to make better choices every day:

• Choose white meat, seafood or a meat substitute over red meat

• Rather than rolls or fries choose yeast-free bread or wild rice

• Rather than cow’s milk drink soy or almond milk

THE ALKALINE DIET

Page 41: Over Wyre Focus Magazine - September 2015

41Tell them you saw it in the Over Wyre Focus

THE ALKALINE DIET (cont)• Create meals around vegetables, rather

than meat or starches• Exchange alcoholic beverages for

sparkling water (though a little alcohol occasionally is good for you)

• Fill your plate with plant foods first, leaving little room for acid-forming options

• Choose vegetables or fruit over prepackaged snacks

• Cook with cold-pressed olive oil, coconut oil and eat some butter from grass-fed cows instead of margarine and weird spreads made from vegetable oils

• Choose a 30-minute walk over a 30-minute TV sitcom

• Reduce stress. Take up meditation, yoga, or some other relaxing method to restore peace

Are some natural foods even better than

others? When it comes to restoring the pH balance in your body to a more alkaline state, absolutely!

The top super foods that can help combat acidity and restore your pH balance are: lemon, avocado, cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, seaweed (think sushi), pumpkin seeds, sea salt, kale, garlic and mineral water.

Avoid processed foods. Make your own sauces instead of pre-made ones in jars and, most importantly, do not fret if you have the odd ‘bad’ day!

You can try out a pH test easily enough at good health food shops. Have a look at where your body is on the scale. This may help you create positive changes for your future health.

to provide them with consistently high temperatures. The flowers are more likely to drop if the temperatures are either too low - below 10°C or too high - above 32°C (chance’d be a fine thing!)

Overwatering or underwatering will also cause premature flower drop. Let the chillies dry out on top before watering.

Chillies are self-fertile but it has been proven that a helping hand from wind, insects or bees can help fruit set and increase chilli pepper yields – obviously it doesn’t help when our plants are being grown indoors.

The one thing Antonia and I overlooked was providing potassium, a nutrient that helps the fruit to form – an oversight that we’ve now rectified by feeding the plants with a seaweed fertiliser so hopefully we’ll see an improvement in performance shortly.

I’ve concluded that the only way to ensure some heat during the summer is to grow your own chillies, and it’s about this time of year that you’ll be able to start harvesting the fruits of your labour.

Last year, due to the stonking weather, we had a bumper crop - many of ours are still languishing at the back of the freezer.

This year, my friend Antonia (fellow heat freak) and I split some plants between us – she’s grown hers on the window sill and mine have been in the greenhouse but regardless, both have been slow to deliver.

Antonia has complained that on one of her plants, quite a few of her flowers have dropped off leading to a disappointing yield - this can be due to a number of factors.

As we all know, chillies originate from very warm climates and it can be a struggle

Both of us love cheese and like nothing better than pairing it with chilli jam so here is my favourite recipe.

• 150 grams red peppers (cored, deseeded and cut into rough chunks)

• 1 kilogram jam sugar

• 600 ml cider vinegar

• 6 x 250ml jars with vinegar-proof lids, such as Kilner jars or re-usable pickle jars.

Method

1. Sterilize your jars and leave to cool.

2. Put the cut-up chillies into a food processor and pulse until they are finely

3. Add the chunks of red pepper and pulse again until you have a vibrantly red-flecked processor bowl.

4. Dissolve the sugar in the vinegar in a wide, medium-sized pan over a low heat without stirring.

5. Scrape the chilli-pepper mixture out of the bowl and add to the pan.

6. Bring the pan to the boil, then leave it at a rollicking boil for 10 minutes.

7. Take the pan off the heat and allow it cool. The liquid will become more syrupy, then from syrup to viscous and from viscous to jelly-like as it cools.

8. After about 40 minutes, or once the red flecks are more or less evenly dispersed in the jelly ladle into your jars.

Save Our Bank UpdateThe campaign to Save NatWest Bank in Knott End on Sea has made some progress since I last wrote an update for Focus magazine.

I have continued to meet with a great many local residents and bank customers, including outside NatWest where you kindly shared your own experiences with me.

I wrote to NatWest expressing the strong feelings you have for the branch and reminding them of their television advert “We will never close the last bank in town” explaining that because of that they had won a great deal of goodwill and custom which was being lost over the news of the closure.

As a result, NatWest have made the decision to introduce a new Mobile Bank service which will visit the community at Knott End-on-Sea every week. This will be subject to local agreement and planning consents to enable NatWest to park the Mobile Bank, but it will enable bank customers to access the majority of services that they can in the existing branch.

NatWest customers will also be able to continue to access their banking in a number of other ways in the local area including telephone banking, online and mobile banking, at the ATM, at an alternative NatWest branch or Knott End-on-Sea Post Office.

NatWest is now engaging with relevant local parties for the necessary permissions to introduce the Mobile Bank service in the local community, and I have said I will support this introduction.

NatWest is also keen to ensure that the service is sufficient to meet with local demand in the long-term, so once in place they will monitor the service, listen to feedback and investigate the possibility of extending the time of the service in the future.

Page 48: Over Wyre Focus Magazine - September 2015

I am also asking about the possibility of the Mobile Bank visiting other local villages on its way to and from Knott End.

Fracking UpdateI’m very disappointed to see the Government announce plans to override the decisions of local councils when it comes to fracking.

Lancashire County Council considered all the evidence from the proposed sites at Roseacre and Preston New Road and I believe made the right decision for our community in rejecting the planning applications.

For the Government to override this shows their commitment to the fracking industry above their respect for the citizens of this nation. Perhaps the most obvious hypocrisy is allowing local communities to reject on-shore wind and not extending this right to unsightly, environmentally damaging fracking.

Summer EventsThis summer I have really enjoyed attending local events across our community including Preesall and Knott End Gala and Pilling Coffee Feast where I was given the tough tasks of judging some awards.

Needless to say a lot of effort goes into these days – and a huge thank you to everyone who works hard for many months beforehand to make this happen.

I have also been out in the Dolphinholme area with Broadband for the Rural North – B4RN – who are digging their own broadband service where BT and Openreach have failed to do so.

At a time when our rural services are under threat it’s great to see the community coming together to help some of our rural farmers, families and businesses connect to a broadband which is much faster than what is

provided in urban parts of Lancashire.

I’m a huge supporter of local companies setting up and challenging the big companies – and I know many of you are too as their waiting list for broadband is growing faster than the trenches can be dug or the cables can be laid.

If you live in the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency, which includes Knott End, Preesall, Pilling, Cockerham, Scorton and Forton, please always feel free to get in touch if you need to.

This month we turn to some of the most important software on a PC or laptop – internet security packages. As the name implies, this special software is all about trying to keep you safe and secure. There are three main parts to consider: firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware. You can choose to use separate pieces of software to cover each section or implement a single combined product to handle everything.A firewall is software designed to prevent unauthorised access to your computer over the internet. It acts as a shield around your machine which only allows ‘good’ traffic to come in, and should also alert you if there is any sign of ‘bad’ activity trying to send information out. Examples include the free Windows Firewall which is included on machines using Windows or paid-for packages such as Norton 360, Norton Internet Security,

Kaspersky, McAfee, Panda and AVG Internet Security, all of which offer the full range of security measures in a single product. The second element in the security bundle is anti-virus software. This aims to prevent your machine from being affected by various forms of malware, short for ‘malicious software’ . Malwear is software used or created by hackers to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to systems – often referred to as viruses. This includes both known (ie. old threats) and new ones which have not been previously identified. If a virus does make it through the defences, then a good package should still pick it up and clean it off later by running regular system scans. There are again several free options (including Microsoft’s Security Essentials or Defender, AVG Anti-Virus and Avast) as well

COMPUTER SAFETY – PART 5 (cont)

as the paid-for combined packages already mentioned. The final component is concerned with eliminating ‘spyware’ ie. a specific type of malware that secretly monitors your computer activity or scans for private information to send back to the hacker. Microsoft’s Windows Defender is a free spyware tool built-in to most versions of Windows. Their Security Essentials package covers both spyware and viruses and all the paid-for integrated security packages will also deal with spyware. There is no single ‘best’ product for security; ask ten people for an opinion and you will probably get at least six different recommendations. Some packages perform better in independent tests one month and then drop down the league table next time. There are two vitally important things to remember – the first is that you MUST make

Page 52: Over Wyre Focus Magazine - September 2015

Are you using a product or service from an advertiser?52

sure that you do something, even if it’s just a case of switching on the free Microsoft options (although these never really score the top marks in testing). And the second is that these products have got to be kept running and fully updated at all times. You should also make sure that the anti-virus software is set to perform regular scans of your machine. As usual, if you have any questions or concerns about security, then please do give me a ring for a quick chat.Joan Bailey 07528 173 891

What Ever Happened To ‘Going To Spend A Penny’?On a recent trip to London one of our members was shocked to be charged 30p to use the Ladies at Euston station.

Still mildly outraged as she attended her meeting, she mentioned this and discovered ‘Toilet Twinning‘, a charity with a quirky way to solve a serious problem and save lives.

Nearly 40% of the world’s population don’t have somewhere safe to go to the toilet. Every 20 seconds a child dies from diarrhoeal diseases. Investing in sanitation is one of the most cost-effective forms of aid.

STALMINE PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Audit for the Year Ended 31 March 2015Councillors were pleased to learn that the external auditors have now completed the annual audit and given the Parish Council a clean bill of health. A copy of the Annual Return can be seen on the website.

Play AreaThe Parish Council has carried out consultation with Stalmine Bowling Club whose members would be most directly affected by the possible relocation of the play area to a site next to the Club.

Members raised a number of concerns and pointed out that all the utility services (mains water, electricity and drainage) for the Club run under the playing field in the proposed location.

They raised concerns over what would happen if there were problems requiring the electricity supply, mains water and foul and surface water infrastructure to be accessed.

Councillors noted that, despite an article in Focus (the Green Book) and on the website news article for the views of local residents, no response had been received.

Given the possible impact on the Bowling Club’s utility services, Councillors decided not to agree to the relocation of the play area to the proposed location. They did agree to give their full support to a refurbishment and possible expansion of play facilities in the current location.

Container for Flood Event EquipmentCouncillors are in discussion with the Village Hall Committee over the siting of a container for storing equipment such as sandbags and road signs on the Village Hall site. The Parish Council is hopeful that a decision will be reached before the next Parish Council meeting in October so that the container can be sited before the winter rainfall.

Date and Time of Next MeetingThe next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Tues 13 Oct at 7:00pm.

For further information contact any councillor or contact the Clerk by email at [email protected], by phone on 07880 657761 or through the website www.stalmineparishcouncil.orgJan FinchClerk to Stalmine with Staynall Parish Council

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges...

However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering...

I now realise what made it all so diffi cult: it was the realisation that taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make.

Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself:• Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities

like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’?

• Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff?

• Do I want to see certifi cates plastered all over the walls or do I want to be greeted every time I visit by the same familiar faces?

• Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate

If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself.

SEQUENCE DANCINGWe have continued to go from strength to strength during the summer, attracting new dancers to the dances at Barton Village Hall. They are held every Saturday night now that the Hall at Pilling has been demolished. Our Thursday dances are held every fortnight from 7:45pm and are also thriving with attendances of around at 100 each session. The £3 entry fee has allowed us to donate to Dogs for the Blind, Trinity Hospice and several other local charities. The next project will be to jointly provide a defibrillator to be positioned just outside the Barton venue. The Barton dances have now been booked with the Hall for the whole of next year apart from a few evenings; these dates will be notified in Focus Magazine. We are now looking forward to the fortnightly Tuesday evening dances at Claughton Memorial Hall which start on Wed 2nd Sept then continue fortnightly on Tuesdays

throughout the winter. The Sunday sequence dances will be soon starting at Kirkland once the autumn time clocks go back. The sounds of big bands and music from the shows and some golden oldies continue to keep us on our toes, mainly provided by the talented organist Alan Cookson and the extensive CD collection of John Lancaster who also shows us the occasional new dance such as the Spindle Swing which takes a bit of mastering. We always look forward to seeing new people attending the dances and would recommend this rewarding pastime to anyone who likes a good social evening with some exercise thrown in.Thanks again Green Book for spreading the word.Jim & Irene Farrimond.

GCSE Results 2015We are very proud of our Year 11 students who sat their GCSE exams this summer. They have again been very successful with some excellent results.

The EBacc figure, the government’s measure of success across a broad range of academic subjects (English, Maths, Science, Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities) was by far the best ever for Saint Aidan’s.

Last year’s figure of 31% was already one of the best in the Fylde. This year’s figure of 46% is a big increase on this and would have made us the highest performing state school in the Fylde by this measure last year.

Congratulations must go to our highest achieving student, Olivia Stupart, who achieved an amazing 12 A* and 1 A grade. We wish every one of our students all the best as they take the next step into further education and adult life.

New StudentsWe are all looking forward to the new term and, in particular, welcoming into our family all the new Year 7 students.

We understand what a big step starting at high school can be especially when the move is from a small primary school.

All our new parents are invited as well for the afternoon on Mon 8th Sept when Year 7s join us. They will be able to meet their son/daughter’s Form Tutor, look at their form room and learn about some of the lessons at high school as well as enjoy refreshments provided by our Parents’ Association.

Open Evening We will be holding our Open Evening on Wed 16th Sept 6:00pm – 8:30pm. This is an opportunity to come and have a really good look round the school, meeting our students, staff and seeing what goes on the

classrooms.

Secondary education is absolutely crucial so the choice of high school is one of the most important that ever has to be made.

We believe we offer the best all-round education in the area but we want parents to come and see for themselves. Everyone is welcome to come along, ask questions and look everywhere. We are very proud of our school and the students who make it so special.

If you would like to arrange a tour at another time please contact me at school anytime and we will organise an alternative time for you to visit us.

If you have any questions at all please contact me anytime.

HAMBLETON WI

At the last meeting Peter Warren, Auctioneer of Warren Wignall of Leyland, entertained and amused us with a quiz designed to see how many of us could remember the dates of the Regency period, the reign of George III or the Arts & Crafts movement etc. He did this by showing us photos of various objects that had been in their salerooms and also asked us to guess what price they had sold for. A Regency inlaid clock, 1810, sold for £1,400; a William Morris, Arts and Crafts chair, 1875, sold for £300, a Penguin ‘donkey’ bookcase in white, 1965 for £250, and a William & Mary gate leg table 1680 for £3,500.Most of us struggled with the dates as well as price estimates. A top mark of 42 was the aim - we managed 30, in spite of watching ‘Flog it’ and the ‘Antiques Road Show’! Rarity and excellence of manufacture dictated prices. Sally is an extra-special senior lady who is looking for a quiet home to live out her retirement.

She would prefer not to live with children as too much noise and activity can be stressful for her.

Sally was found to be in poor health when she arrived at the centre so was sent for tests.

Blood test results showed that she had high liver enzymes though after investigation no obvious cause was found. This is all part of getting old and is nothing to worry about. It simply means that in the future she may have to have liver supplements tablets or a special Hepatic Food diet. She will also require regular check-ups with the vet but this is understandable for her age.

Could you offer any of these lovely cats a retirement home?

RSPCA (cont)A specially created garden at Wyre Estuary Country Park has won a Bees Needs Special Award from Keep Britain Tidy.

Supported by Defra and the National Pollinator Strategy, the award recognises efforts to encourage and increase pollinator-friendly habitats at Green Flag Award winning parks.

A group of dedicated volunteers set out to convert an under-used piece of land into a bee-friendly haven. The result is a nectar-rich cottage-style garden containing a mixture of flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables. Plants have been selected to attract wildlife, especially bees, butterflies, moths and hoverflies, and ensure a continuous supply of nectar and pollen.

You’ll find the nectar garden next to the main car park, close to the visitor information point.

our Adult Flu Clinics.

All children aged 2 months to 17 years old with conditions that put them at risk of complications of flu will receive a letter offering them a flu vaccination.

We encourage parents to book them into the flu clinic. Children with asthma who only need a ‘blue’ inhaler and do not need a regular steroid inhaler will not be invited as they are not classed as being at more risk.

Children aged 5-6 years (born between 1st Sept 02 and on or before 31st Aug 10) will be vaccinated in school and we will therefore be unable to offer this age group the vaccination if they miss it as the vaccines will be delivered to the school.

We will also be offering the flu vaccine to all children who were aged 2, 3 or 4 years on 1st Sept, as part of the national campaign. If they catch flu they can be poorly and pass flu onto others who are more vulnerable.

We are able to offer the vaccination for most children from age 2 to 17 years as a nasal spray, rather than an injection. Not all children are suitable for the nasal vaccine and in order to check the clinics carefully to ensure the correct vaccine is given, we are running a dedicated children’s flu clinic for all aged 2 to 17 years old, on dates which are soon to be arranged.

We will not be able to vaccinate adults at this clinic. We do ask that the person with parental responsibility accompanies all those under the age of 16. If a grandparent or older sibling is bringing them, please can they bring a consent note from the mother.

New Appointment SystemThank you for all your support and patience in allowing us to get the new appointment system off the ground and hopefully we can now reciprocate by having a robust Doctor Telephone Management System and a new

Over Wyre Patient Group Wins Award

At the recent Annual General Meeting of the Fylde and Wyre Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the ‘Patient Forum’ at the Over Wyre Medical Centre was named as ‘Patient Participation Group of the Year’.

The Over Wyre Patient Forum, formed as Patient Participation Group (PPG) in 2012, is made up of volunteers, all local residents, who meet regularly with a team of Medical Centre staff, including GPs, and work together to identify ways that services to patients can be improved.

The CCG’s criteria for the award state ‘We’re looking for a PPG that can demonstrate an excellent working relationship with their practice, which has made a real difference to the patients. In recognition of a group’s exemplary performance and team commitment and to celebrate excellence

in participation between primary care and communities, including patients, service users, carers and the public and for the many devoted hours of encouragement and help the group has given unselfishly to our organisation’.

The Over Wyre Group’s chairperson Ian Gibson commented ‘I am so pleased for our members. We are in the PPG because we seek external recognition – we have a simple common aim of wanting to help improve the health care available to Over Wyre residents.

However, the award is a clear acknowledgment that the group’s efforts and commitment are recognised, by a body of healthcare professionals, as having made a real contribution towards that common aim and our whole group will find that satisfying.

Our successes could not have been gained without excellent support from the Practice,

We are now pushing to extend our membership to include a still wider cross-section of our community and to support this aim, we have recently launched a Facebook group, where patients can put forward their views, experiences and ideas easily and quickly at a time to suit them’.

Stalmine with Staynall Residents’ Association

The dates of our next two meetings are: Tues 1st Sept and Tues 6th Oct.

The September meeting will see the planning of our now annual autumn events, including the second lantern making family evening in preparation for the Christmas lights switch on.

Also, look out for the next Children’s Nearly New Table Top Sale and information on table bookings etc.

As you know, we are trying to raise money to buy external defibrillator boxes for Stalmine’s two defibs as they would then be available for use 24/7.

The SSRA and Stalmine School are working together on this and any additional contributions or fund raising ideas would be most welcome.

Defibs do save lives and it could be any of us or our families and friends who could be in need one day. Many thanks go to Chris Hyde for supporting us with the necessary information and contacts.

Information on all SSRA events will be available on either our Facebook page, in McColl’s shop, Wyre Villa, from Stalmine School, the Church, Main Attraction Hairdressers and the Seven Stars.

The SSRA committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month, 7:30pm in the Seven Stars and all are welcome to come along and join us.

Over 25 Years’ Experience

PILLING WI

Lane Ends Veterinary Services did us proud at Pilling WI’s July meeting.

Four young staff members came to tell us about their work, illustrated with some alarming photographs and gruesome-looking equipment, which was passed around.

There has been a big change in the proportion of young women choosing veterinary practice compared with young men.

This change could be due to the contrast in earnings commensurate to hours worked. There is always a vet on call to minister to sick animals – even at weekends.

When asked about the reaction to a woman responding to a call from a farmer. It was pointed out that when dealing with an animal weighing ¾ tonne there was little difference between sexes and on leaving him with a healthy cow and calf, there was little to complain about.

Trainee vets are encouraged to help out at their local practice, gaining hands-on experience whilst learning. They are well aware of the messy aspect of their chosen career long before they graduate from university.

Sue Capper gave the vote of thanks as someone whose family pets have been cared for by Lane Ends Veterinary Services for over four decades

The winner of the competition for a picture of a family pet was Helen Curwen. The runners up were Betty Lawrenson, Ann Anderson and Mona Armer. Our next meeting will be on Thurs 24th Sept at 7:30pm in St. John’s Hall. The speakers will be David Pearce and Dick Gillingham and their talk will be ‘Fish and Ships’. The competition will be for a ‘Fleetwood Souvenir’.

Pilling Coffee Feast, whose origins go back into antiquity, was held near the end of July and this time the weather did us proud. The day was sunny and breezy, ideal for marching without us becoming overheated.

Those older members amongst us commented on the fact that the route is much shorter today than was the case many years ago. I’m sure that some of you readers will remember when the route embraced Fisher’s Row and even Garstang Road, as well as Stake Pool.

However, the day went well and I’m sure that a good time was had by all the children. The following day saw us at Shireshead for what should have been their open-air Songs of Praise.

Guess what... it rained all afternoon, necessitating moving the service to the Parish Church, although by the start time it had actually become fine.

Another Songs of Praise followed on Sun 9th Aug, this time at Stella Maris on Garstang Road Pilling, where a charity event was hosted by Mrs Ethyl Davies in aid of the Trinity Hospice, who were presented with a cheque for £1,000.

We fielded a good turnout for this worthy job and were pleased to be joined by Ted Sykes, a previous long-time member and Secretary of Pilling Band.

For a while now, there has been ingress of rainwater affecting part of the bandroom roof, so thanks go to members Jamie French and Ben Croston, who came equipped with ladder and sealant one day, to effect a repair (rain seems to be a recurring theme of these newsletters).

The reinstatement of our access road is making good progress. The drains are in and a base course of material has been laid so that, by the end of the month, the tarmac should be down and the job finished.

The band is now rehearsing some new music to be included in a concert to be held in Barton Parish Church on the evening of Sat 18th Sept, following which we shall be preparing for the Rochdale Contest which is held in October.

One final word: if any of you computer/ tablet/smartphone users were to search YouTube for ‘Pilling Band’, you will find there a number of videos of the band performing locally. Have a look and listen, some are quite good!

As always the band can be contacted via the website www.pillingband.com or the Secretary Emily Hallett on 07710 983 916.

Pilling Band Development Fund

The Band Committee recently asked me to be their Vice President and I am honoured to accept the position.

After the 80th Birthday Appeal Fund was closed I seem to have acquired a new name - Events Organiser.

A new Band Development Fund is now up and running with the aim of keeping the Band funds in the black after the new road and car park have been finished.

This has been a massive project and the funds have been really stretched.

So (as Lilian sighs in the background “Here we go again”), we have some events lined up, details appearing month by month in Focus. We hope the support you have given us will continue.

Variety BandboxFri 9th Oct at 7:30pmParish Hall, PreesallThe programme will include music from ‘Brassed Off’. We are supporting the Macmillan Nurses in our fund raising that night so please come! There will be a Hot Pot Supper. Tickets are £7.50 from Knott End Post 0ffice.

The Band will keep you up to date with other events so hope to see you all in Knott End on Thursdays/Saturdays with the Development Fund Raffle & CDs

stray and abandoned dogs were picked up by Local Authorities across the UK over the last 12 months, equating to a staggering 307 stray dogs being found every day. That’s without cats, horses, primates, parrots, snakes, rabbits and wildlife that need rescuing and help too!

Many of the larger animal charities have a great deal of financial support, whereas smaller, less well known organisations struggle to raise adequate funding and do not have access to funds as other charities do.

Wetnose supports the smaller animal rescue centres and organisations caring for sick or vulnerable animals, where there are limited or insufficient funds to carry out the work they do.

Buy a Nose ‘Pose With A Nose’ and Help Save Animals

This is one way of helping to educate children by having fun and making them aware that animals are an important part of our daily lives, especially pets and our wildlife.

Already we have supporters arranging a doggie tea party, a tandem parachute jump, sponsored dog walks and more!

Other fundraising ideas include: Horse Treasure Hunt ; Fancy Dress Old Car Rally; Bike Ride; Hawaii BBQ; Keep Fit Athon; Dance Athon; Film Night; An Afternoon Tea event; A barn dance.

Maybe you could host your own event and raise funds for Wetnose? You can buy a nose on-line by paypal at www.wetnoseanimalaid.com/support.html
