LANCASHIRE FIRE & RESCUEN33 Preesall

In the last couple of months there’s been an awful lot of activity, both good and bad, for your local fire crew and the community.

I’ve mentioned before that we regularly drill for ‘road traffic collisions’ regardless of there not having been even one in our area for several months, and sadly from 25th February we had three in three weeks.

At a two car collision on Carr End Lane, Stalmine the occupants of one of the cars had to be cut free with hydraulic cutting equipment to be treated by paramedics. A few days later on Burned House Lane in Preesall just after midnight a car lost control and hit a building.

I’m sure you all know about that one from the road closures and inconvenience caused for weeks afterwards.

We were called there to release a casualty

from a vehicle, but things had changed by our arrival and we stopped contamination of the drain system by fluids leaking from the vehicle, made safe the area, and requested experts to assess the structural damage to the building.

Two weeks later we were called to assist the paramedics and air ambulance with a crash on Head Dyke Lane, Preesall involving a motorcyclist and a car. The terribly sad details of the loss of a local family man have been in the papers already.

The usual selection of ‘fires in the open’ were there as always, from fires on farms that were considered too close to buildings to a fire in a car park at Pilling amenity area which we attended with the Police.

Two arson attacks took us to the outskirts of our own area, one on Gulf Lane, Cockerham which was luckily spotted by a passer-by who raised the alarm before there was any major damage, and one on Rawcliffe Lane, Out Rawcliffe.

The roadworks caused by the damaged building meant we were the second fire appliance to arrive in Out Rawcliffe, just after colleagues from Bispham station, who on arrival found a van well alight, the building immediately adjacent well alight and a person with his clothes on fire.

The fires were immediately dealt with, luckily the casualty only received minor burns, dealt with at the scene by firefighters. In both cases we completed full fire investigation work and passed our files to the Police.

Drills have continued as always, some just for our crew, and some with colleagues we are most likely to work with.

CucumbersDid you know that according to Pliny (a Roman author and naturalist), the Emperor Tiberius had cucumber on his table every day during the summer and winter. As we know the Romans were an inventive lot and they apparently used artificial methods (similar to the greenhouse system) of growing cucumber so that it was available for the Emperor’s table every day of the year. Pliny reports that the Emperor “was never without it; for he had raised beds made in frames upon wheels, by means of which the cucumbers were moved and exposed to the full heat of the sun; while, in winter, they were withdrawn, and placed under the protection of frames glazed with mirrorstone.” Rather than nipping down to the nearest Roman supermarket the Emperor knew that home grown cucumbers have a vastly

superior flavour and texture to any shop bought cucumbers - and if you don’t have a greenhouse (or a raised beds on wheels!) they can be grown outside but they’ll just take a bit longer to produce fruit. So if you fancy having a go, you need to sow your seeds in 8cm (3in) pots this month and then transplant them into larger pots, grow bags or directly in the soil late May to June. They’ll need to be supported with long canes and water little and often – don’t allow cucumbers to dry out or to become waterlogged.Pinch out the growing tips when they reach the top of your supports and this will encourage bushy growth and voila! Your cucumbers will be ready for picking about three months after sowing and will continue cropping until the end of September. Cut the cucumbers when they are about 15 to

20cm (6 to 8in) long and still green. If you’re lucky enough to own a greenhouse then it’s well worth growing cucumbers indoors. Greenhouse cucumber plants produce long, smooth fruits and they don’t need pollinating - in fact, you should remove any male flowers to prevent pollination happening as this produces fruits with a bitter flavour. Outdoor varieties are called ridge cucumbers. These varieties tend to be shorter with a rougher skin and produce male and female

flowers. These need to be pollinated but this isn’t a problem as the insects outdoors will do the job for you. Once you’ve planted up your cucumbers you’ll be looking for some further inspiration so why not consider a day out at the Holker Hall Garden Festival?Show gardens, floral marquees, artisan and local produce will all be available set within the grounds of Holker Hall at Cark-in-Cartmel, Cumbria and will take place from Fri 29th to Sun 31st May.In the meantime I’m off to the supermarket – until our veg has grown, the nine month old baby is stuck teething on shop bought cucumbers. I have a fair idea of her opinion of it – most of it ends up on the floor.Happy Gardening!Alison Tarpey-Black ARTNOIRE 07738 515 846 (01253) 810039.

Like most items in the home, computer equipment and mobile phones etc. are vulnerable to fire, flood and accidental damage as well as to the risk of theft.

However, the consequences of losing your computer can be much more serious because of the information stored on it – this can be irreplaceable material such as photos, music, contact numbers or that book you’ve spent two years writing, or it can be personal/financial information which could be used for the purposes of fraud etc.

So you need to take all the usual precautions to keep your equipment safe from being stolen or lost just like you would any valuables.

Additional Advice for IT Equipment

If you are at risk from flooding, try to keep computers out of danger on upper floors or on top of tables/desks rather than on the floor.

Position machines carefully – don’t leave

It’s been a while since I last put pen to paper (or rather, fingers to keyboard) in my mission to encourage everybody to be safe online.

That doesn’t mean the battle has been won – far from it! The bad guys become ever more inventive in their schemes to wreak havoc and part people from their cash. So it’s probably time to remind everyone, old hands and newbies alike, of the risks and hopefully give you some guidance to help along the way.

Keeping safe online requires three different aspects to be working properly – hardware, software and the user. All three need to be right to keep problems and the enemy at bay.

Hardware is the first element – this is the equipment you use so it includes PCs, laptops, tablets (eg. iPads) and ‘smartphones’.

All of this should be kept physically secure, which means protecting it from a number of risks.

COMPUTER SAFETY

them where they can be knocked off, leave cables trailing to trip people up, or block the air vents etc.

Make a note of computer serial numbers to enable reporting if stolen (and store the note away from the computer!)

Use a security marker to label your computers.

Register your computer equipment on the Immobilise National Property Register (www.immobilise.com). If it is recovered by the police, there is a better chance of being re-united with you.

If you take any equipment away from home, keep it hidden or physically locked up if not in use.

Carry laptops in hand baggage on an aircraft or coach. Never leave a laptop on a car seat - even if you are in the car, your laptop is vulnerable whilst parking or at traffic lights.

If your equipment goes missing, notify the

Police and obtain a crime or loss reference number for tracking and insurance purposes.

If you have registered with the Immobilise National Property Register, log on and update their records to show the theft. And just to be on the safe side, change your passwords as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please do give me a ring for a quick chat.

GARSTANG UNPLUGGEDKenlis Arms - Thurs 14th MayAmy Speace (Duo)Although Amy Speace began in the theatre, acting with, amongst others, The National Shakespeare Company, she left to pursue music full time. She’s now touring to promote ‘That Kind of Girl’ - her new CD, which has been likened to an early Lucinda Williams style of music with open lyrics and strong tunes. She’s gained support and praise from legends such as Judy Collins (who signed her to her own label), Guy Clark and Nanci Griffith, Ian Hunter and Alejandro Escovedo; an unlikely combination until you hear Amy’s songs. The Houston Press called her “The unconscious cool of Americana”, nodding to the lean poetry of her rootsy folk - an edge possibly learned busking in the subways of NYC or playing Juliet in parking lot productions.

It’s her voice that catches the audience off guard. Some voices are a bridge from the past to the future; we need them to keep singing. These voices open hearts with this rare, one-in-a-million quality. Amy Speace has such a voice. Judy Collins said, “Amy’s got it and then some. She’s a timeless artist, part past, part future, and that’s a really good thing.” She’s with Garstang Unplugged at the Kenlis Arms, Ray Lane, Garstang PR3 1GD on Thurs 14th May. The music starts at 8:30pm. Tickets are £10 on the door, through the website or by telephone on (01995) 602795. Our monthly Singers Night will be on Wed 27th May from 8:00pm.For more information, visit:www.amyspeace.com orwww.garstangunplugged.com

Vinegar also supports heart health in multiple ways. As explained in the Journal of Food Science:

“Polyphenols such as chlorogenic acid, which is present in high levels in apple cider vinegar, could inhibit oxidation of LDLs and improve health by preventing cardiovascular diseases.”

Vinegar may help you lose weight, as it appears to have an anti-obesity effect by increasing satiety and reducing the total amount of food consumed.

If you get sinusitis take two tablespoons of ACV twice a day, it helps to break up and reduce mucous in your body, helping to clear your sinuses.

Acid reflux often occurs because you have too little acid in your stomach (yes, too little

I thought I would touch upon a good old fashioned remedy for a myriad of ailments this month, truly one of the few ‘cure alls’ out there that actually does have many benefits. It is one of my all time favourite natural remedies….apple cider vinegar! (ACV)

The tricky bit is figuring out where to begin with what is a very ancient product. Hippocrates himself documented its uses by the Ancient Greeks.

So perhaps we should fast forward from the world of the ancients to a very modern problem….diabetes.

Vinegar has a beneficial effect on blood sugar levels and has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity in individuals with type 2 diabetes and a third of people with pre-diabetes.

Taking two tablespoons before bed lowered blood sugar levels in people with type 2

NATURE’S PANACEA (cont)so taking your antacids merely maintains your problem). You can easily improve the acid content of your stomach by taking one tablespoon of raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a large glass of water daily. The pectin in apple cider vinegar may also help to soothe intestinal spasms.

It also works for a variety of skin ailments, from bites to sunburn. You can either apply it directly to the irritated area or try soaking in a bath with about one cup of vinegar added.

Topical application of ACV may help remove warts, probably because of the high levels of acetic acid it contains. Tape a ball of cotton wool soaked in ACV to your wart overnight.

Apple cider vinegar contains potassium and enzymes to help banish fatigue. Plus, its amino acids may help prevent the buildup of lactic acid in your body, further preventing fatigue.

If you decide to try ACV the best one to buy should be organic and have ‘the mother’ in it. The mother is the pulp which gives it a cloudy effect and has many of the health giving enzymes and ‘goodies’ in it.

OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUBThe speaker at the April meeting, Alan Foxall, gave an illustrated talk on “Gardens to Visit this Summer”.

He started off close to home at Gresgarth Gardens near Caton then moved on to Harrogate, the RHS garden at Harlow Carr and finally the RHS flower shows at Chelsea and Hampton Court.

Alan was previously employed at the Southport Botanic gardens so had a professional interest in the way that bedding plants were used in the various places.

His talk also included photos of a UK based commercial seed growing company which supplies many of the plug plants which we receive through the mail. At the height of the season they are shipping out about 100,000 plants a week – you can imagine the size of their greenhouses!

The next meeting of the Gardening Club is Mon 18th May at 7:30pm in the Church Hall, Knott End Methodist Church, Lancaster Road. The speaker will be Sue Mantle and her topic “My Allotment”. The evening will also include a members plant sale.

Annual Parish Meeting

The Annual Parish meeting will be held on Tues 19th May. The Annual Parish Meeting is not a council meeting. It is a meeting of the parish where residents can come along and speak to their elected Parish Council about issues of concern.

The date of the next ordinary meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Tues 5th May.

Both of the above meetings will be held at the Village Hall at 7:30pm.

Bob Williamson Park

Following a lengthy discussion at the April meeting, the Parish Council agreed that the current Wyre Borough Dog Control Orders will be enforced on the park as soon as possible.

This will allow the Council to effectively target irresponsible dog owners, without impeding the vast majority of people who control their dogs responsibly, so that all sections of the community can enjoy the facilities at the park.

The Dog Control Orders can be found on the Wyre Council website at www.wyre.gov.uk/dogcontrolorders.

ROTARY

Stroke Awareness DayThurs 7th May

Following the success of last year’s exercise and thanks to the generosity of Booths in Garstang plus the services of Heartbeat,

the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre are able to participate once again in a campaign to raise public awareness of one of the main cause of strokes - high blood pressure.

To achieve our objective, Heartbeat from Preston is providing the staff and equipment to conduct blood pressure tests. Their personnel are fully experienced in giving any appropriate advice, following the tests.

The private facility will be available from 10:00am until 2:00pm on Thurs 7th May

on the first floor of Booths Garstang store. Access to the facility is via the stairs or by the lift.

The whole test will be conducted in confidential surroundings, for which there is no charge. No booking is required. Just turn up on the day. Rotarians will be in attendance to advise you should there be any problems or any waiting time involved.

This campaign is part of a public awareness exercise being undertaken by Rotary Clubs throughout Great Britain and Ireland.

High blood pressure is a common problem, affecting about 10 million people in the UK. It often has no symptoms, so having it measured is the only way to tell if your blood pressure is high.

completing the whole stroll.

It was a challenging day in many ways, especially emotionally as we were walking in memory of Matt Hesmondhalgh, who should have been here celebrating his 26th birthday, but with sunshine most of the way the atmosphere and company were amazing.

Handmade hearts with inspiring comments had mysteriously been placed along the route and these, along with tunes like ‘ I Can Walk 500 Miles’ and ‘These Boots Were Made for Walking’ from our support boat encouraged us on!

Thank you to St Mary’s School, Claughton (Matt’s former primary School) for the loan of their minibus and driver (Cheers Julie!), to Mark and Tracy of Greaves Farm Caravan Park who provided a much needed comfort stop, to John, our ‘back-up’ driver along the route and to all the walkers, sponsors, and

well-wishers - you should be very proud of a wonderful achievement – we hope you don’t ache too much!

I could tell you all about Sea Bank House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful Individual rooms, some with sea views, the designer bathrooms, Wi-Fi, HD televisions, telephones and the glorious sea views from the lounges...

However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago, I do not remember any of those concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was ‘doing the right’ thing, remembering “don’t ever put me in an old people’s home” knowing that was exactly what I was considering...

I now realise what made it all so diffi cult: it was the realisation that taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life-changing decision on behalf of a loved one was the hardest decision I had ever had to make.

Finding the type of care available within the many different care homes is daunting in itself:• Do I want a new, large, modern home or should I say institution with all the facilities

like Wi-Fi and a garden maze, or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a ‘home’?

• Do I want familiar staff, many of whom have been working at the same home for many years, coupled with on-going continuous training enhanced by a dedicated management team who are in daily contact with both residents and staff?

• Do I want to see certifi cates plastered all over the walls or do I want to be greeted every time I visit by the same familiar faces?

• Do I want the same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost and knowing that they would appreciate

If you are thinking along these lines, then come and visit Sea Bank House for a chat and feel the homely atmosphere for yourself.

Fitbods

Congratulations to everyone who took part in our challenging 2 hour Aerobathon! You were all brilliant and worked extremely hard.

In total we have raised an amazing £1,223 towards the purchase of defibrillators for our community.

A big thank you to everyone who collected sponsorship and generously donated. It

couldn’t have been achieved without the tremendous support from many individuals and a very generous local company.

I am currently liaising with Christopher Hyde (Community Resuscitation Manager/North West Ambulance Service) and his colleagues for advice on which types and schemes there are available for us to purchase.

It is hoped that we can purchase at least one external defibrillator, outside storage case for St. Oswald’s and possibly have funds towards a unit near Preesall Sports Field.

Ideally more defibrillators would be beneficial in the centre of the village and at Hambleton UR Church Hall, therefore, I have applied for additional funding from the Fun Run Committee at The Shovels in Hambleton, along with the Moon’s Charitable Trust (so fingers crossed!)

FUNDRAISING FOR DEFIBRILLATORS

Page 49: Over Wyre Focus - May 2015

49Tell them you saw it in the Over Wyre Focus

If anyone can help with funding or suggestions for location this would be greatly appreciated

In the event of an emergency 999 call, you will be directed to the nearest defibrillator by the telephone operator as emergency services hold all information of defibrillator location.

The following list shows where defibrillators can be located at the moment. I will try and put lists in the library and also on community notice boards.Hambleton: The Spar, (Petrol Station – External), The Village Hall (External) and The Shovels (Internal soon to go External).Stalmine: The Severn Stars (Internal).Preesall: The Black Bull (Internal), Willowgrove Caravan Park (Internal soon to go External).Knott End: The Squash Club (Internal), The Golf Club (External).

External defibrillators are stored outside in

a coded case and internal ones are stored inside on the premises.

Furthermore, all schools in the area have a defibrillator normally stored internally, with the exception of Fleetwood’s Charity School which has recently raised enough funds for an external storage case.

If you are able to help in anyway or would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you.Rosina Lawson (01253) 810467 07986 248 173 Email: [email protected]

GARSTANG SOROPTIMISTS (cont)Other Work

Soroptimists are not just about raising funds and supporting the poorer people in our world. We are also committed to raising awareness of women’s issues at home and abroad. Under the heading of Health, this month I would like to highlight one of them.

Endometriosis is a condition where cells, like the ones lining the womb, are found elsewhere in the body, most commonly inside the pelvis, around the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The monthly hormonal cycle causes these cells to grow, break down, and bleed, but unlike those in the lining of the womb, there is no way for them to leave the body, leading to inflammation, pain and the formation of scar tissue.

What causes endometriosis?Although there are several theories there are no proven causes.

Patients often ring our practice to ask to see a doctor on that day. Not all patients need to see a doctor face-to-face on every occasion. Some people, especially those who work during the day or have caring responsibilities, may find it easier to get advice over the phone, rather than having to visit the practice.

What will happen when I phone the practice to ask for an appointment? You will speak to one of the doctors to talk about your problem. The telephone will be answered, as before, by one of our receptionists. The new system will operate all day from 8:30am Monday to Friday

If you request an appointment, the receptionist will ask the doctor of your choice to ring you back (if available). We understand that you want to speak to a doctor who knows you well.

You will be asked to supply your full name,

Message from the Practice Manager We want you to be happy and confident with the service we provide for you at the Over Wyre Medical Centre, so from Mon 1st June we are changing the way we work with patients by using Doctor Telephone Management - a system of assessing how best to meet your needs when you ring the surgery.

Why are we changing? We have listened to what you have told us about your needs - that, at times, it is difficult to get prompt medical advice because the surgery is too busy.

We want all our patients to see the right healthcare professional, for the right length of time and at the right time. We also know that continuity of care is important and that you want to have an appointment with someone who knows you well.

contact number and a brief description of the problem. This will allow the doctor time to look at your medical records before calling you back. The calls will be dealt with in the order they are received, unless a more urgent telephone consultation is needed.• The doctor may be able to offer immediate

advice or suggest treatment. • You may need to see a different member

of the practice team. The doctor may make that appointment for you or transfer your call to the receptionist.

• You may need to have blood tests or other investigations and the doctor will arrange an appointment.

• The doctor may suggest that you need to come into surgery on the same day and will make that appointment for you.

• The GP may suggest that they call on you at home if you are truly housebound or terminally ill.

If you come to surgery for regular tests or checks with the Practice Nurse or Health Care Assistant you will be able to book an appointment for this in the usual way.

How long before the doctor calls back?Everyone who calls will speak to one of the doctors on the same day. We will try to ring you back as soon as possible, usually within an hour.

What if I come to the surgery in person? If you have a problem which is a real emergency you will be seen immediately by a Nurse Practitioner.

If your problem is not an emergency then you will be given a telephone appointment. In most cases you will be advised to wait at home for the call back. Waiting at the surgery will not speed matters up. We need to make sure that all patients receive the same service. This is

Annual Town Meeting

The Annual Town Meeting took place at Preesall Youth and Community Centre on Monday 30th March. The Mayor presented a short report on key events over the past year and issues raised at the meeting included the problems associated with the closure of the sea wall for remediation work, the need for the rest of Park Lane to be resurfaced, potholes and the promotion of the area.

Sea Wall

Despite assurances that the current works would be phased and access maintained, the sea wall has been closed to pedestrians. According to the Environment Agency the contractors carrying out the work feel that re-opening sections of the footpath at the end of each working day or when they are not working on a particular stretch would prove difficult to manage safely and will add both

significant cost and delay to the completion of the works. The Environment Agency has apologised for raising expectations that access would be maintained.

Civic Sunday Road Closure

The Civic Sunday procession will take place on Sunday 14th June, leaving the Youth and Community Centre car park on Lancaster Road at approximately 10:10am to arrive at St Oswald’s Church in time for the 10:30am service.

The Police and Lancashire Highways requires that roads are closed to traffic while the procession takes place and the following roads will be affected:

Park Lane will be closed at the junction with Sandy Lane/Lancaster Road.

positive feedback. Graham Bradley also raised a large amount for the night after completing a sponsored “half-head” shave wearing a Blackpool Football Shirt and as an avid Preston North End supporter that’s no

mean feat. Once his sponsorship is added we believe the final total will be roughly £1,900.

WYRE JUNIORS FOOTBALL CLUB

U15’s Season 2014/2015Wyre Juniors Under 15’s are sitting top of the Beta League with 1 game remaining. We have guaranteed promotion to the Alpha League but are fighting with BJFF Vipers to go up as champions.

We have also had some good results in the Hogan cup beating Fleetwood Town 4 - 1 in the first round but unfortunately losing to Blackpool Rangers, who are near the top of the Alpha League, 3 - 1 in the second round.

The Under 15’s have played some fantastic football this season and hopefully we can enjoy a successful year in the top league next season.

Saturday Morning FCWith forecasters predicting a summer heatwave now is the perfect time to bring your child down to Preesall Park on Saturday morning for a game of football.

We have facilities that cater for children from Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3.

We start teams from the Under 7 age group. Why not bring a friend with you? You can be sure your children will enjoy many years of football with friends to last a lifetime.

Each month we give you a small report from one of our older squads and their progress in the local leagues. These teams all began at SMFC!

Each session costs £3 and is run by FA and UEFA Qualified Coaches. We always recommend you bring a still soft drink and both football studs and trainers. If the weathermen have made a mistake SMFC will move indoors in the sports hall.

If you are interested in bringing your child please turn up on a Saturday Morning at 10:30am-11:00am or call Steve Creer on (01253) 812392/07751 287 238

KNOTT END & PREESALL IN BLOOM

A very big thank you to all those who organized and supported our coffee morning, with your help we raised £400 which will be used to purchase plants and shrubs for the area.

During March and April, when the weather has allowed, the In Bloom team has been doing some maintenance work on the flower beds but now that May has arrived it is time

to begin our serious gardening and to start making decisions about any new projects.

This year we are very pleased that the Pilling Lane WI has volunteered to take over the planting and maintenance of the flower bed at the corner of Lancaster Road and Grasmere. This will be part of their celebrations to mark the 100th birthday of the National WI and the 80th birthday of the Pilling Lane branch.

The In Bloom team are always looking for volunteers and anyone who can spare an hour to plant, weed or water will be very welcome.

Our first gardening evening will be Thurs 14th May. Meet at the clock in Barton Square at 6:30pm, bring gloves and small gardening tools.

For further information contact: Yvonne McCann (01253) 811364 or Joyce Wilson (01253) 813519.

PILLING BAND80th Anniversary Appeal

The planning for the 80th Anniversary appeal began on May Bank Holiday, 26th May last year, with myself and my graphic designer Anne Curwen, whose father Bill Jenkinson had been a founder member of the Band in 1935.

We had no money in the bank and a blank computer screen but we had plenty of ideas. And so, as we come to the end of the anniversary year on the 4th May, the Band can look back at six special events which have raised sufficient funds to lay the new road leading to the Bandroom in Field House Lane Pilling. We are awaiting approval from Wyre Borough Council, which we hope will be received soon

The band have really been on top form and made so many new friends under their Musical Director, Len Charnock. The Souvenir Programme which has been prepared for the Brass & Voices Concert on the 4th May is something to treasure and beautifully prepared by Anne Curwen.

Thank you for all your wonderful support and the encouragement you have given us. The final concerts are at the Parish Hall Preesall on Mon 4th May. At 2:00pm - A film show of the Opening of the New Bandroom in Pilling on the 4th May 1987. Then afternoon tea and lovely cakes, followed by a special tribute to Tom Redman, Conductor and Band Trainer for over 30 years to be given by some of his former pupils. Tickets £5.

7:00pm - Brass & Voices in Concert - The Band with the Elswick Singers. A £50 Grand Draw will be made. Don’t miss this very special concert. Tickets are £7.50 (which includes the Souvenir Programme worth £2). All tickets are on sale from The Insurance Centre and The Post Office in Knott End

Sally Sally came into the centre with her sister Tilly. We would like to re-home them together but this is not essential. However if Sally is not re-homed with Tilly she would prefer to be the only pet in the household.

She is an extra special senior lady who is looking for a quiet home to live out her retirement. She would prefer not to live with children as too much noise and activity can be stressful for her.

Sally was found to be in poor health when she arrived at the centre so was sent for tests. Blood test results showed that she had high liver enzymes though after investigation no obvious cause was found. This is all part of getting old and is nothing to worry about. It simply means that in the future she may have to have liver supplements tablets or a special Hepatic Food diet. She will also require regular check-ups with the vet but this is understandable for her age.She is an affectionate older lady who likes to spend her day relaxing in. She isn’t an active cat and her joints are a little stiff though she’s doing well. She likes her food despite having lost a few teeth in her old age. Could you offer her a retirement home? For all the latest on animals looking for new homes and up coming events please visit www.rspca.org.uk/local/blackpool-and-north-lancs-branch

SAINT AIDAN’S NEWS

We have another busy term ahead especially for all our Year 11 students who will be sitting their GCSE exams before saying farewell to Saint Aidan’s as they move on to college, sixth form or other careers.

All Key Stage 3 students have recently sat internal exams which is valuable practice for all the exams they will have to sit when they reach Year 11.

Paris 2015

A group of students recently enjoyed a trip to Paris experiencing a rather windy exploration of the Eiffel Tower as well as the excitement of Disneyland.

There are lots of trips planned for the rest of this year, two of which are to New York at the end of May and Russia in the October half term.

Charity

Our students are quite unique in their understanding of the need to help others and there are always fund raising activities going on in school.

One form led by Mrs Rossall organised a Tic Tak charity fundraiser making £140 for the Happy House in Kenya.

Another group of students in Hillary House raised an amazing £700 for their chosen charity Cancer Research.

Each form had a collection box and there was a very competitive element to this fund raiser as to which form would raise the most. Form Tutors cajouled and encouraged as they wanted to be the winning form.

At the time of writing this, the winning form has not been revealed as it will be announced in a special assembly during May.

Discovery Days

Following the success of last year, we will

Page 73: Over Wyre Focus - May 2015

73Tell them you saw their advert in the Over Wyre Focus

again be holding Discovery Days when we will be offering parents and their children the opportunity to come and look around school on a normal working day.

Parents often tell us they would like to see what happens on a day to day basis and what lessons are like so during July we will be welcoming anyone to come along and see what Saint Aidan’s is all about.

We believe we offer a truly unique, top class education and want parents to see this for themselves. Further details will be in the local press and the next issue of the Focus Magazine.

Year 10 Work Experience

Just before the May half term, all our Year 10 students will be going out on a work experience placement to see what it is like in the world of work. Students go into a diverse range of environments from hospitals to hotels, florists to schools and many more interesting work places. It not only gives them an idea about future careers but it also develops communication skills and understanding of the demands and expectations of being an adult. Our students return to school with a more mature attitude and often some very entertaining anecdotes!

Out and About!

Students and staff will be around the local communities as the band will be performing at various village events and we will be having a school ‘stall’ at Hambleton Gala, Pilling Patronal Festival on 20th June and the Great Eccleston Show.

If you have any questions about Saint Aidan’s or feel we can offer support or help in any way, please do contact me at school anytime.
