Shout out to 2nd grader Mahad Brickle

Our school store, highlighted in last week’s newsletter, was the brainchild of Mr. Brickle. He called me (Principal Foote) over the weekend at the start of the year and shared with me his idea. Mr. Tyler and Ms. Weiss-Cohen wrote the grant

but I wanted to give a special shout out and thank you to Mahad for creatively thinking of

this brilliant idea and sharing his entrepreneurial spirit with our school.

Team,

In two weeks, on December 17th, this will mark what should be the 35th birthday of Mr. Marcquel Johnson - father to Amari (pictured to the left) and Amani (2nd grade). May we continue to keep the Johnson Family in our thoughts and prayers and never forget all that Marc provided to the OEC community. His love and legacy live on in his children, and in the coming weeks additional information will be provided about honoring his life at OEC. Stay tuned. Continue to spread the love that Marc so generously gave all of us.

Best,Meredith

Drop in from the Dean… Policy RemindersIn recent weeks, we have been noticing an increase in students using cell phones and wearing hooded sweatshirts during the school day. Please help us to reinforce this policy with our students.

CELL PHONE POLICY

- All cell phones are to be off and away during school hours (8:20-3:09) as well as during any after school programs.

CONSEQUENCES

- 1st Infraction: Student cell phone is collected and student may retrieve it at the close of the school day.- 2nd Infraction: Student cell phone is collected and will be returned to a parent/guardian at the end of the

school week.- 3rd infraction: Student cell phone is collected and will be returned at the close of the school year.

We realize that as we enter into the coldest months of the school years, students will be dressing in layers to stay warm. Please remember that if hooded sweatshirts are worn, the hood must remain OFF at all times in the building. This is a school district requirement.

Our Vision and MissionThe vision of OEC is to be a model school in the School

District of Philadelphia by 2020 as rated by the School Progress Report (SPR) while creating the least restrictive

environment for students with special needs. Additionally,

100% of our 8th graders will have the opportunity to

attend the high school of their choice. We will

accomplish this through:

-Ambitious Instruction-A Supportive Environment

-Involved Families-Collaborative Staff

-Effective Leadership

Our mission is to prepare students

to become positive,

productive citizens who can

live independently

and with purpose to serve others.

communications are highly sensitive to families’ cultural norms. I

have attached the Danielson Rubric for everyone to review as

you reflect on teaching and accurately assess yourselves.

Best Practices This Week: Weiss-Cohen, Caroline Instruction: Reminder to all staff: kindly ensure you upload

your lesson plans into your google folder and print out a copy to keep in a safe, consistent place in your classroom. The next two weeks can be very tiring before break. Continue to do your best

and work hard. Instructional time is valuable. Kindly use every day in the next two weeks in a meaningful and productive way for students. Instruction should be taking place EVERY DAY until December 21st.

The Classroom Environment: Shout out to Ms.

Weiss-Cohen and Ms. Caroline for creating an

excellent classroom environment for our students by

pairing them with mentors from Overbrook High

new mentor. Creating a classroom culture of positivity

will motivate students to put forth their best effort.

Keep it up Ms. Weiss-Cohen and Ms. Caroline!
