Overview Maintenance Tests

As the complexity of vehicle diagnostics continues to grow, vehicles are requiring routine maintenance tests, such as replacing brake system components, performing wheel alignments, TPMS sensor registrations, etc. For many technicians (especially non-scan tool savvy technicians) finding these tests within specific system controllers can be difficult at best, OEM’s put these crucial tests into many controllers.

This critical test lookup has been added as a quick access function key from the controller screen of the selected vehicle. The function key is called “Maintenance”. When selected the screen lists the controller(s) that contain the very important maintenance tests for the selected vehicle. The list is live as per the selected vehicle, allowing the user quick access to these critical tests.

Maintenance tests are broken down into categories to aid the technician in speedy location of the correct controller.

Maintenance Test Categories are:

TPMS Registration

Service Light Reset

Test for Pattern Failures

To further refine the focus on critical actuations and adjustments there was a drive to develop and release special tests that are required to complete repairs for Pattern Failures. The following provide examples of those pattern failures and vehicles effected.

Low tire pressure monitor warning lamp on. Possible the radio displays "LOC". Unable to reset the tire pressure using the headlight procedure and when attempting to reset using the radio, the tire pressure reset option does not appear.

Body Control Module (BCM) configuration error.

1. Attempt to clear the code from the Antilock Brake Control Module using the scan tool.  2. If the code does not clear, attempt to reset the tire pressure monitor using the headlight switch method.      A. Adjust all tire pressures to the recommended kPa/PSI. Refer to Tire Inflation Pressure Specifications in Maintenance and Lubrication, or on the tire placard label in the left door jamb.      B. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.      C. Cycle the exterior lamp switch from OFF to parking lamps 3 times within 5 seconds.      D. Use the scan tool in order to clear the TPM DTC.  3. If unsuccessful, attempt to reset the tire pressure using the radio method.      A. Adjust all tire pressures to the recommended kPa/PSI.      B. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON, with the engine OFF.      C. Turn the radio OFF.      D. Press and hold the DISP button until SETTINGS is displayed.      E. Press the SEEK up or down arrows until TIRE MON is displayed.      F. Press the PREV or NEXT button to enter the submenu. RESET will be displayed.      G. Press the DISP button, a chime will sound and DONE will be displayed.      H. Scroll until EXIT is displayed.      I. Press the DISP button to exit the TPM reset mode. A chime will sound to verify exit.      J. Use the scan tool in order to clear the TPM DTC.  4. If the tire pressure option does not appear on the list of options in the radio, install a scan tool and attempt a tire pressure reset using the special functions menu. If the radio did not show any tire reset options, the scan tool reset will most likely be unsuccessful as with the previous mentioned reset procedures.  5. View the vehicle's option configuration and VIN number using the scan tool. Access the special functions, select set up new BCM, view the information stored in the BCM. If the tire pressure monitor is not highlighted with an * next to the option, attempt to highlight the option with an * and enter. Unless the BCM is new, the scan tool will indicate that the BCM is secure and will not allow any option configuration change. If the BCM is secure, replace and configure the BCM. 6. If the VIN number or the option content is not accurate, attempt to enter the correct VIN. If the scan tool states the BCM is secure,  replace the BCM and configure the VIN and option configuration into the new BCM.

Torque Sensor Calibration and Steering Position Sensor Calibration test Identifix RepairTrac Pattern Failure

Loss of electric power steering.

Failure of the torque/position sensor in the steering column.

1. Observe the subcode identifier after the C0545. This is a 2 digit code. If subcode 4B exists, use the scan tool and perform the Torque Sensor Calibration and the Steering Position Sensor Calibration.  2. If the sub‐code is 00, observe the scan tool data torque sensor 1 to go down and torque sensor 2 to go up on a left turn. Vice‐versa on a right hand turn.  3. If the values do not change, confirm the wiring harness between the column and module/motor is not damaged and is plugged in.  4. Replace the torque/position sensor (now serviceable) or replace the steering column.  5. Perform Torque Sensor Calibration and the Steering Position Sensor Calibration using the scan tool.  6. A special policy #10183 is in place for 10 year or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Depending on the failure and warranty coverage, the special policy may not fix your problem.

Reset Alcohol content test Identifix RepairTrac Pattern Failure

Malfunction indicator light on with code P0172. The engine may or may not run poorly.

The alcohol content has been incorrectly calculated by the Powertrain Control Module.

1. Scan test the Powertrain Control Module for alcohol content and expect regular pump gas to read less than 10%.  2. If the alcohol content is more than 10%, reset the parameter using the scan tool. To reset the system manually, add more than 3 gallons of gasoline and drive to consume more than 0.3 gallons. This is however often not an effective method.  3. To measure alcohol content, use a clear container with 10 equal fluid segments marked. Add 1 part water and 9 parts gasoline. Shake vigorously. Allow the sample to settle. The water and alcohol will mix and settle to the bottom. If more than one part clear liquid on the bottom, that is the amount of alcohol in the sample.  4. Attempt to obtain information from the driver if the vehicle is suspectable to short trip driving. This may cause the computer to not properly update the alcohol content.

Fuel Rail Pressure DI Identifix RepairTrac Pattern Failure

Opportunity ‐ Make sure we support the Fuel Rail Pressure DI

Result ‐ Our tools support this data item

SymptomText  ProblemText  TestAndFix

The Check Engine Light is on with a code P0193.

The Fuel Rail Pressure Temperature Sensor has failed.

Using a scan tool to access the Powertrain Control Module data, verify the Fuel Rail Pressure voltage. The voltage is normally 2.0‐3.0 V depending on fuel pressure. The voltage has to reach very close to 5 V to set a code P0193. If the voltage shows high on a scan tool, access the fuel rail pressure temperature sensor at the passenger rear corner of the fuel rail near the #1 fuel injector. There is a 4 wire connector on the sensor. The fuel rail pressure signal is the

Red/Pink wire. This voltage should match what the scan tool shows when backprobing the wire with a voltmeter. If the voltage matches and is at 5 V, verify that the Brown/White wire shows 5 V for the reference voltage. Also check the Gray/Red wire for a good ground. Lastly, connect a mechanical fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail to be sure the fuel pressure is not over 90 PSI. If the fuel pressure is roughly 30‐40 PSI as it should be or lower, and the voltage on the signal wire is at 5 V, replace the fuel rail pressure sensor.

Crankshaft variation relearn needs to be performed using the scan tool.

1. Perform a Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn using the scan tool. The scan tool will give instructions that may include cycling the key, applying the service brake and will eventually advise to raise the engine speed until it hits the rev limiter. Release the throttle and wait for the scan tool to inform the relearn was successful.  2. If the relearn is not successful, remove the serpentine belt and disconnect the torque converter (automatic transmission) and recheck for the false misfires.
