Derived Problem Statement: How to increase the depth, breadth, and diversity
of research focused on U.S. Army problems?
Derived Mission: U.S. Army Research Lab – South extends the lab presence
geographically to develop science and technology relationships which
strengthen research on U.S. Army problems in order to accelerate
technology transition to the warfighter.
Key Tasks:
- Build trust with select regional academia and industry bodies
- Share information on U.S. Army gaps in essential research areas
- Establish collaboration mechanisms and increase communication
- Increase successful joint proposals and collaborative research on gaps
- Increase two-way access to scientists & engineers; infrastructure; ideas
See environment, see ourselves, see opportunities and risk

Construct
• No new ARL funding
• Each new ARL campus has primary research focus areas
– Other regional collaborators can connect – “hub & spokes”
• ARL will partner with multiple regional institutions
– ARL staff will be present under a CRADA at host site
– ARL could establish Cooperative Agreements with each site to facilitate funding actions (supplies, etc.)
• Mix of Government & non-Government people recruited locally
– ARL staff
– Faculty Appointments (professors can be ARL employees up to 130 days per year)
– Students, professors, contractors
– Other Government organizations
– Current ARL staff will spend significant time at new campuses
