CONVERGENCE
3
CONVERGENCE
Convergence is:
The capacity of users to manipulate information and
communications of any format and kind from one
single, common interface.
4
CONVERGENCE
Convergence means:
Integration of voice and data
Building up of ICT, from the telecoms, media and IT
industries
Content run over different access platforms
Convergence of terminal equipment
5
CONVERGENCE
Convergence is leading to:
Structural changes at the business, economic and social levels
The placing of content production and aggregation at the
center of ICT dynamics
6
CAUSES OF CONVERGENCE
7
CAUSES OF CONVERGENCE
Convergence results from structural changes:
The Microcomputer Revolution
The development of the World Wide Web and of e-commerce
The Mobile Boom
The blending of telecoms and IT with consumer
electronics
8
CAUSES OF CONVERGENCE
A new industry:
Number of mobile sets is taking over that of fixed lines
Data traffic is becoming dominant in fixed networks
Broadcasting uses same infraestructure as private
communications
Radically new types of communications and of content
distribution over the Internet (e.g. streaming, downloads)
9
CAUSES OF CONVERGENCE
ICT’s reshaping still ongoing:
The future: complete convergence
Convergence is putting pressure on the local loop for
broadbrand roll-out
IMT-2000 (UMTS): the completion of the integration-
convergence circle
10
CONSEQUENCES OF CONVERGENCE
11
CONSEQUENCES OF CONVERGENCE
Convergence is and will be changing the way we live:
A more individualistic and content-rich reality, for users
An ongoing source of change, for professionals
12
CONSEQUENCES OF CONVERGENCE
A shift in the ICT industry and
in the basis for the wealth of nations:
Neutrality of networks
Content at the center of the ICT dynamics
The Internet – a decentralized source of content, protocols
and software
ICT at the center of the economic dynamics
A new State approach (info-inclusion, regulation,
international cooperation)
13
CONSEQUENCES OF CONVERGENCE
The virtual space has a global reach,
leading to the need of a strengthened internacional cooperation
14
