The Battlefield BoardsEach of the 6 Battlefield boards in thisexpansion corresponds to a specific Scenario inthe game, as listed below.

The icon in the upper left corner of eachBattlefield board also matches the icon on theback of the 5 Enemy pieces that should beused with that Battlefield board (see Setup).

SetupUse the same setup for eachScenario as for the originalboard game. In addition, dothe following:

1. Add the new Feature cardsand the new Gandalf cardsto the existing cards. InRivendell and Lothlórien, deal out all 15 cards, startingwith the Ring-bearer. Withtwo players return four ofthe cards to the game boxwithout revealing them, then deal out the remainingcards.

2. Organize the Enemypieces into 6 stacks, so thatthe pieces in each stack havethe same symbol on theback.

3. Place the correspondingBattlefield board (see left)near the Scenario board.

4. Take the stack of 5 Enemypieces whose icon (see left)corresponds to the currentBattlefield board and placethem faceup next to theBattlefield board.

5. Place the 5 Fellowshippieces faceup next to theBattlefield board.

6. Shuffle the trigger tilesand place them on to theScenario board: Place onetrigger tile facedown next toeach space on the mainActivity line except the startspace; place one trigger tilefacedown next to the firstfive Event boxes; and placeall remaining trigger tilesfacedown in a stack next tothe last Event box.

trigger tiles Collecting Trigger TilesPlay progresses as in the original board game. When you advance the Event marker or themarker on the main Activity line on your turn, collect the trigger tiles that the marker passesover and the one that it stops on and place themfacedown in front of you.

IImmppoorrttaanntt:: You do not collect trigger tiles thatyou pass over or land on when the markeradvances as a consequence of putting on theRing.

Resolving trigger tiles At the end of your turn, after resolving therevealed Event tiles and any cards played faceupon to their respective discard piles, you mustresolve the trigger tiles in front of you. Turn upthe first trigger tile. Unless you are lucky tohave an empty tile, it will show one or morecolored swords. In the order of the coloredswords, from top to bottom, activate thecorresponding color Enemy pieces, as describedbelow. Discard the trigger tile facedown, thenturn up the next one and progress in the samemanner until you have resolved all of the triggertiles you collected during your turn. The Ring-bearer cannot put on the Ring while resolvingthe trigger tiles.

IImmppoorrttaanntt:: Once an Enemy is defeated (seepage 6), it is removed from the game and canno longer be activated by trigger tiles.

ActivatingEnemies When an Enemy is activated with a trigger tile,do the following:

•If the faceup Enemy piece is not on theBattlefield board yet, place it on the numberedentry space that is indicated on the trigger tile. Each space on the Battlefield board may onlycontain one Enemy piece. If the indicated entryspace is occupied by another Enemy, use thenext-higher entry space that is empty, continuing with entry space 1 after entry space4. If all four entry spaces are occupied by otherEnemy pieces, the new Enemy is not activated.

•If the Enemy is already on the Battlefieldboard, it advances along the red arrow to thenext space unless that space is bblloocckkeedd. A spaceis blocked if it is occupied by another Enemypiece or by certain Fellowship pieces. Whetheror not a Fellowship piece blocks a space dependson the special ability of the Fellowship piece(see page 6) and whether or not the Enemypiece is charging.

•If the space at the end of the red arrow isblocked, the enemy will try to advance alongthe white arrow instead.

•If the space at the end of the white arrow isalso blocked, the Enemy piece does not advance.

Charging Enemies

If an activated Enemy piece bears the chargingicon, or if an Enemy piece is activated by atrigger tile bearing the charging icon, then theEnemy piece is cchhaarrggiinngg. Charging enemies areable to move into spaces occupied byFellowship pieces (other than Aragorn).Exactly how charging Enemies interact withthe Fellowship pieces they move on to isdetailed on page 6.

If an Enemy piece with the charging icon isactivated by a trigger tile with the chargingicon, it is still just “charging”; there is nocumulative effect.

Damage causedby AdvancingEnemies When you advance an Enemy piece on theBattlefield board during your turn, you sufferthe damage indicated on eeaacchh space that theEnemy piece passes over or ends its movementon. If the damage is encircled by the Ring, theRing-bearer suffers the consequences instead ofyou:

Move your Hobbit one step into thedarkness on the Corruption line.

Place any two of the cards in yourhand faceup on to the discard pile. (Inthe Friends & Foes expansion, 2 Foesappear instead.) If you do not possessthe required cards, you must discard allyour cards and you are eliminatedfrom the game.

Sauron moves one step toward theHobbits on the Corruption line.

TThhee RRiinngg IIss MMiinnee!! – Sauron takesthe Ring and the game is over. You may still play Feature cardsand spend shields to call Gandalfbefore you move an Enemy tothis space. The only Battlefieldboard that features this icon is thecenter space on the Black GateBattlefield board.

Roll the die and suffer theconsequences.

You lose all your shields.

Take one of the facedown trigger tilesfrom the last Event box, if stillavailable, and place it facedown infront of you.

Move the marker on the main Activityline back by two spaces, if possible.

When the marker on the main Activity line ismoved back, the players do not encounter thespace again (i.e., they do not collect the relatedbenefits or suffer penalties for the space themarker is moved back to). However, after the

marker is moved back, it is possible that whenthe marker is moved forward again, the playerswill encounter a space they have alreadyencountered. If this occurs, the players ddooresolve the spaces normally, receiving bonuses, suffering penalties, and collecting trigger tiles asnormal.

However, note that the number of “Ring” Lifetokens that the players may have at any giventime is limited by the components provided inthe original game. If all the “Ring” Life tokensare held by the players and the marker is movedto a space that would allow them to collectmore, they may not be collected at that time.

Double Damage

Some of the Enemy pieces depict the doubledamage icon, indicating that they inflict thedamage indicated on the spaces on theBattlefield board twice.

The Vanish Icon

Some of the spaces on the board show theVanish icon. If an Enemy piece moves on to aspace with a Vanish icon, it inflicts the damageindicated by the other icons on that space and isthen removed from the board. However, theplayers do nnoott receive rewards for defeating theEnemy piece.

Enemy piece movement The following examples show how an Enemypiece moves when activated by a trigger tile.

The black Enemy piece cannot move along the redarrow, since it is blocked by another Enemy piece. It

moves along the white arrow instead.

The black Enemy piece cannot move along the redarrow, since it is blocked by Gimli.

It moves along the white arrow instead.

This blue Enemy piece has a charging icon, meaningit is not blocked by any Fellowship piece except

Aragorn. It moves on to Gimli’s space, and Gimli isremoved from the board.

Fellowship SpecialAbilitiesEach Fellowship piece has a special ability, listedbelow:

GGaannddaallff Gandalf does not block Enemypieces. When an Enemy piecemoves on to Gandalf’s space, the Enemy is defeated, andGandalf is discarded facedown.

AArraaggoorrnnAragorn blocks the space he ison, even against chargingEnemy pieces.

LLeeggoollaass Legolas blocks the space he ison from normal Enemy pieces. When a charging Enemy moveson to Legolas’s space, Legolas isdiscarded facedown, but theEnemy does not inflict thedamage indicated on the space.

GGiimmllii Gimli blocks the space he is onfrom normal Enemy pieces. When a charging Enemy moveson to Gimli’s space, Gimli isdiscarded facedown, but theEnemy does not inflict thedamage indicated on the space.

BBoorroommiirr Boromir does not block thespace he is on. When an Enemypiece moves on to Boromir’sspace, Boromir is discardedfacedown, but the Enemy doesnot inflict the damage indicatedon the space.

DefeatingEnemy PiecesThere are several ways to defeat an Enemy pieceon the Battlefield board:

•When an Enemy piece occupies a ssqquuaarreessppaaccee on the battlefield board, the active playermay discard two stars to defeat the Enemy. These spaces are called aattttaacckk ssppaacceess.

•The Enemy piece advances on to the spacewith the Gandalf piece – as described byGandalf’s special ability.

•Any one Enemy on the Battlefield board maybe defeated with the new Gandalf card“Onslaught.”

When an enemy is defeated, the Enemy isremoved from the game (place it aside or backin the box).

Rewards for DefeatingEnemiesWhen an Enemy is defeated, the active playerimmediately receives the reward indicated onthe Enemy piece:

Move your Hobbit one step toward thelight on the Corruption line, if possible.

Choose any one of the unusedFellowship pieces and place it on to theBattlefield board.

Sauron moves one step away from theHobbits on the Corruption line.

Draw the indicated number of cardsfrom the facedown deck.

Take the indicated number of shieldsand place them in front of you.

Defeat the two leftmost Foes.

Remember that when an Enemy advances on toa space on the Battlefield board that is markedwith the Vanish icon, the Enemy is discardedfacedown; however, the players do nnoott receivethe rewards indicated on the Enemy piece.

FellowshipPieces At any time during your turn, particularly afterturning up a trigger tile and before activating anEnemy piece, you may discard cards with therequired number of fighting or star symbols toplace a Fellowship piece on to the Battlefieldboard. A Fellowship piece may not be placed onto a space already occupied by an Enemy pieceor another Fellowship piece. A Fellowship piecemay not be placed on to any gray shaded spaces.

Only the active player may discard cards toplace the Fellowship pieces. The number ofsymbols that must be discarded to place aparticular Fellowship piece is shown on theFellowship piece itself.

During each Scenario, each Fellowship piecemay only be placed once on to the Battlefieldboard. If a Fellowship piece is discarded, place itfacedown next to the Battlefield board. Anyfacedown Fellowship pieces may not be placedagain during the current Scenario.

At the start of each Scenario, flip any facedownFellowship pieces faceup.

New Turn Option: Place a Fellowship PieceIf you choose not to play cards on your turn, theoriginal board game rules allow you to eitherdraw two Hobbit cards or to move your Hobbiton the Corruption line backwards by one step. Now you have an additional option: You maychoose any one of the faceup Fellowship piecesand place it on to the Battlefield boardfollowing the normal placement rules.

Fellowship pieces may not be placed on shaded spaces.

Scenario End The Scenario ends when a marker reaches thelast space on the main Activity line or the lastEvent box, after resolving trigger tiles. If duringthe course of resolving trigger tiles an enemyinflicts damage that moves the marker back onthe main Activity line, then the Scenario doesnot end.

At the end of each Scenario, return any Enemypieces from the just-completed Scenario to thegame box. Connect the appropriate Battlefieldboard to the new Scenario board, then place theappropriate Enemy pieces and all of theFellowship pieces faceup next to the newBattlefield board.

PlayereliminationIf a player is eliminated from the game whileresolving a trigger tile, the current trigger tile isdiscarded and any further trigger tiles aretransferred to the Ring-bearer, who must thenresolve these as the active player before normalplay resumes.
