R&D
Research and development is divided into two work programs, Wood Technology and Timber Building Con-struction. INCAFUST develops its own research projects or in alliance with public institutions or private compa-nies. Since 2005, INCAFUST has worked with regional, national and European funds in different areas and pro-
grams.
Program focused on the characterization and study of technological properties of wood of different tree spe-cies from Catalonia. The research activities are:
Outstanding projects:
Revaluation of European black pine (Pinus nigra subs. Salzmannii) by producing glulam (Catalan Regional Gov-ernment-DMAH 2006)
Technological characterization of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and study of new applications (Catalan Regional Government-DMAH 2006)
Structural diagnosis and pathology studies measured with resistographies (Catalan Regional Government-CTFC 2007)
Development of renewable adhesives for its application on structural boards (Catalan Regional Government DMAH 2008)
Technological characterization of different classes of Catalan pines (Catalan Regional Government-DMAH 2008-2009);
Management of populations and the recovery of the black pine (Trans border Co-operation Territorial Program France-Spain-Andorra - POCTEFA 2009-2012)
Research area on timber technological innovation in building construction, in order to encourage and promote the use of wood between all actors in-volved in the building. The main research program are:
Outstanding projects:
Timber facades in Mediterranean Climate (Catalan Re-gional Government-AGAUR, 2010-2012)
Computational studies of fire behavior in Timber Build-ings (Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitive-ness, 2011-2015)
Technology transfer and training in timber prefab sytem to build housing for forestry communities in Guarayos, Bolivia (Catalan Regional Government-ACC10, 2012-2013)
INCAFUST takes part in different European Research Net-works. Their researchers usually participate in the COST action, an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology:
COST Action FP1006 “Bringing new functions to wood through surface modification” (2011-2015)
Technical Committee 215-AST: “In-situ assessment of structural timber” of RILEM
COST Action FP1101 “Assessment, Reinforcement and Monitoring of Timber Structures” (2011-2015)
European Research Group Fire Safe Use of Wood (FSUW)
Wood Technology
-Wood properties characterization -Product innovation and technological improvement -Sustainability of wood-based materials Timber Building Construction
-Structural Design -Building Technologies -Fire behaviour and fire protection -Conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of historical buildings
Innovation suport
The main aim of the innovation support tasks is to help to improve the competitiveness by increasing the production, adjusting of it to the required and accomplishing of the quality standards.
Complementary activities:
Advanced technological services INCAFUST offers technological services based on equipment, techniques and innovative working methods. The insti-tute gives efficient response to the specific needs required by the companies and their products.
The institute has the facilities and equipment to evalu-ate the properties of any wood-based product. Be-tween these tests we find the following:
The structural diagnosis and pathology studies allow to analyze the effects of degradation processes of the ma-terial. We use special equipment and exploration tech-niques such as thermography, the resistography, or the acoustic detection of insects.
