What are the ‘New Waste Technologies?’

• New to the UK

• New to the municipal waste sector

• Near market technologies (with the exception of the R&D programme)

• Not necessarily New

• Examples of the key new technologies– Aerobic and Anaerobic Biological Treatment– Mechanical – Biological Treatment / Pre-treatment– Other Refuse Derived Fuel or material preparation systems– Pyrolysis / Gasification / other Advanced Thermal Treatment– Autoclaving

Slide 4

Why are we addressing these Technologies?

• Landfill Directive

• Waste Not Want Not – Waste Implementation Programme

• Focus on the diversion of BMW

• Not Incineration (although this will be included in the Data Centre)

• These technologies will struggle to develop without proven operational experience

• There are perception, planning, contractual, regulatory, financial and operational risks

• This programme aims to address some of these barriers

What is the Defra New Technologies Programme?

• Comprises four elements:-

– Local Authority Supporter programme, managed by Enviros

– New Technologies Demonstrator programme, managed by RPS

– Waste Technology Data Centre, managed by the Environment

Agency

– Technologies Research and Innovation Fund (TRIF), managed by the

Waste Implementation Programme (Defra)
