BRGM
OVERVIEWS & HIGHLIGHTS
THE FRENCH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
THE BRGM IS FRANCE’S LEADING PUBLIC INSTITUTION WORKING IN EARTH SCIENCE APPLICATIONSFOR THE MANAGEMENT OF SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE RESOURCESAND RISKS.
ITS ACTIVITIES ARE GEAREDTO SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, SUPPORT TO PUBLIC POLICY DEVELOPMENT AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION.
UNDERSTANDINGgeological phenomena and associated risks.
DEVELOPINGnew methodologies and techniques.
PRODUCINGand disseminating data to supportthe management of soils, subsoilsand their resources.
DELIVERINGthe necessary tools for managing soils, subsoils and their resources, preventing risksand pollution and developingclimate change policies.
Over
1000 staffincluding more than 700 engineers and researchers
BUILDING ON GEOLOGY AS ITS CORE COMPETENCE, BRGM DEVELOPS EXPERT KNOWLEDGE IN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, RISK MANAGEMENT AND INNOVATIVE ECOTECHNOLOGIES.
THESE ACTIVITIES ARE ORGANISED INTO 10 MAIN TOPIC AREAS THAT ADDRESS DIFFERENT INDUSTRIAL AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES.

continuous production of 3D geological models
Gabalda et al. 2015
A national program federating BRGM and universities.A project organization with multidisciplinary teams on the same geological object (based on scientific issues involving new acquisitions) for a 5y period.Current focus on the Pyrenees: 2013 - 2018
RGF – « France Geological Reference Frame »
acquire, store and disseminate up-to-date 3D geological information
2 complementary objectives:
• answer scientific questions (improve qualitative understanding)
• answer societal needs with quantitative tools (environment, water supplies, urban geology, risk, mineral resources, energy….)
Projects must have a strong scientific background as well as strong technologic aspects (data–base, imagery, modelling , web delivery …)
RGF – « France Geological Reference Frame »
several tools• commercial tools (e.g. Petrel)• keep on developing « home-made » innovative solutions
Martel 2015 – plateau de Sault modelwater resources in karst systems
• GDM Multilayer for geological data management and « 2,5D » contexts
• GeoModeller for complex 3D structural systemso implicit definitions of geological bodies
with rules defining geological architectureo accounting for both interfaces locations
and orientation data
current concerns / highlights• sharing models for thematic applications
• export : meshes and properties for (multi)physics simulation purposes
3D geological model: 3D grid representation(RGF–demo)
Voxel mesh filled by lithology properties from geological model to sesimic waves
propagation simulation (RGF-demo).
from static to dynamic models
GeoModeller -> FeflowCornaton, 2015
current concerns / highlights• sharing models for thematic applications
• export : meshes and properties for (multi)physics simulation purposes
• producing 3D models more efficiently• from 2D to 3D (cf. Courrioux et al.), improving modeling methods (fault networks…)
• storing and delivering models• structuring databases (RGF), on-demand representation (cf. Loiselet et al.)
• implementing the transition from (desktop) tools to information systems• modules for functionalities/services (SAS)
• GDM Multilayer: web services…• GeoModeller: to be done
• pushing for the standardization of geological concepts and data exchange• BRGM is involved in several consortiums for definition of standards for the
geosciences: Open Geospatial Consortium, CGI – IUGS• some projects to mention: OneGeology, EPOS / EGDI• Dublin OGC TC, June 22: Borehole & 3D Geoscience ad-hoc meeting: looking
for partners to work with on 3D geomodelling data interoperability
