Dear SCPS Families,

We have important information to share with you regarding the emergency order issued by the

Commissioner of Education on Friday, April 9th regarding state testing implications.

Please know the results of statewide, standardized assessments are vital to the planning and

implementation of individual learning pathways for your student and identifying your student’s

areas of academic support and acceleration. We strongly encourage all students to continue to

take these valuable assessments and to do their very best.

Below are some basic highlights we wish to make you aware of:

Elementary:

• Third Grade Promotion: The decision regarding promotion to 4th grade will be

determined at the school level by the school’s principal, with input from the student,

parents, and the student’s teachers, after a review of the student’s academic record. A

student may be promoted to grade 4, regardless of the absence of an English Language

Art (ELA) score of a Level 2 or higher, if the school is able to determine that a student is

performing at least at Level 2 through the good cause exemption process or through a

review of the student’s academic performance and student progress monitoring data.

Middle & High:

• Graduation Requirements: For students who are expected to graduate in the spring

of 2021, districts are authorized to waive the required state assessments for graduation

(Algebra 1 & FSA English Language Arts (ELA)). However, each district must

determine on a case-by-case basis that the student has satisfactorily met all other

requirements for graduation.

• End-of-Course Exams: Districts may determine promotion and final course grades in

classes with state end-of-course (EOC) exams, based solely on the student's performance

in the course. In Seminole County, the EOC score counting for 30% of the student’s

grade will only be applied if it helps the student’s overall grade and only to those courses

successfully completed during the 2020-21 school year. State required end-of-course

exams are administered in Algebra 1, Geometry, Civics (Grade 7), U.S. History, and

Biology.

o With the exception of spring 2021 graduates, students needing to meet the

Algebra I graduation requirement may:

▪ Earn a level 3 on the Algebra I EOC during any future test administration

▪ Use a passing Geometry EOC score to meet the requirement

▪ Earn a comparative score on one of the following assessments:

▪ PSAT/NMSQT Math Score of 430+

▪ SAT Math Score of 420+

▪ ACT Math Score of 16+

Page 3: Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update · 2021. 4. 19. · All Oviedo High School graduating Seniors will be allocated 16 tickets per senior for the May 19, 2021 ceremony

o Students wishing to earn the Scholars Diploma will need to earn a passing score

on the Grade 10 ELA Assessment, Algebra 1 EOC, Biology EOC, US History

EOC, and Geometry EOC.

• Bright Futures: For students expected to graduate in the spring of 2021, schools may

request suspension of the required number of volunteer hours for scholarship eligibility

on a case-by-case basis. In addition, the deadline to obtain the required minimum SAT

and ACT score has been extended to no later than December 1, 2021.

District Overall:

• Grade Promotion/Retention: Each student’s academic record will be evaluated on a

case-by-case basis in accordance to the SCPS Student Progression Plan.

-Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS)

that the drill goes well. It is important to note that while the drill is conducted the campus

and students are safe. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we continue

to do all that we can to make our campus as safe as possible. Thank you.

How can you help?

1. If your child is feeling ill or displaying any potential symptoms, please err on the side of

caution and keep them home. Every student does have 10 absences that a parent can write a note

for making them excused. This is per semester, so you don’t have to worry. Also, at home a

student can log into eCampus/Canvas and stay up to date on the class material.

2. If your child has recently been tested for COVID-19 due to symptoms, has symptoms, or

potential exposure, please contact Tanya Cameron at 407-320-4008.

3. If your student tests positive, please immediately contact Tanya Cameron at 407-320-4008 or

call the school at 407-320-4050.
