Introduction
Just when you thought you had a great Extract, Load – Transform (EL-T) system in place,
along comes disruption in the Big Data world. And increasingly enterprises find that Cloud’s
cost benefits are too good to ignore. This is a dilemma that is both rewarding and challenging.
On one hand Big Data technologies like NoSQL and Hadoop are helping store all kinds of data
to analyze. And on the other hand enterprise data resides within relational and specialist
databases within their Information Technology systems. As enterprises stand at this data-
technology crossroad pondering on how to tackle them it becomes important that they choose
the right technology to deal with the data. In this paper we explore how the latest Oracle Data
Integrator (ODI) 12c release unifies the Oracle Warehouse Builder to Oracle Data Integrator.
We also introduce the Oracle Warehouse Builder Migration Utility to help migrate your OWB
infrastructure to ODI with minimal disruption to your business and IT operations.
Why move from Oracle Warehouse Builder to Oracle DataIntegrator
With the last release of Oracle Warehouse Builder being the terminal release for the product Oracle is
committed to protecting our Oracle Warehouse Builder’s investment in the technology. With Oracle
Data Integrator occupying the role of Oracle’s Strategic EL-T technology (as explained in our
Statement of Direction for Oracle Warehouse Builder ) our customers will find it extremely easy to take
advantage of the heterogeneous connectivity,
performance enhancement and solution
integration that Oracle Data Integrator offers.
Oracle supports a phased migration approach that
will help Oracle Warehouse Builder customers
slowly migrate their existing infrastructure and
logic to an Oracle Data Integrator environment
through the use of migration utilities. Tighter run
time integration with Oracle Warehouse Builder
translates to execution and monitoring of OWB
jobs in ODI, and OWB repository management
in ODI. A well thought out support policy and
increasing functionality rapidly being added to Oracle Data Integrator emphasizes Oracle’s
commitment to delivering the right vision to our customers.
Oracle Warehouse Builder has long served as an ELT product for many of our customers. However
there are very distinct advantages in moving to ODI from OWB. ODI is an EL-technology. By
selecting EL-T vs ETL as your standard your enterprise realizes these following benefits.
The credit r isk team of Royal Bank of Scotland sees the
benef its of a modernization in EL-T technology almostinstantly. It used to take 3-9 months for data from their
transaction al systems to reach their data Warehouse. With
the installat ion of Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle
GoldenGate it now takes a matter of days and weeks for th e
data to be refreshed. The actual process o f migration from
their Oracle Warehouse Builder solu tion to the recent
Oracle Data Integrator solution w as also a smooth and
ef f ic ient one with the help o f migrat ion ut i l i t ies and with no
loss of intellectual property.

a. EL-T uses set-based transformations and eliminates bottle necks in data reading and increases
efficiency.
b. It reduces network hops and eliminates the middle-tier which delivers high data loading
performance.
When working with exponentially large and complex data, these are factors that decide if your users
and business can trust the data to make critical decisions.
In addition ODI
Integrates and works with all traditional source systems like ERP s, Data Bases, Flat Files etc.
Is built for emerging technologies like Big Data, Social Data, Cloud and Mobile.
Delivers high performance and low Total Cost of Ownership, and
Is Flexible, lightweight and easy to enrich functionally.
Getting Started
Enterprises are already lining their EL-T investments to take advantage of the advancements in Big
Data, Processing and Business Analytics. Securing a solid technology for your data is the first step
towards IT and business trust and excellence. As the technology landscape undergoes a sea change in
dealing with data, now is the right time to explore the options and align your EL-T technology to your
organizational goals.
Here are top pointers to get started on the migration.
a. ODI 12c supports an easy mapping between OWB 11gR2 concepts and objects and their ODI
12c counterparts. A migration utility is provided that automatically translates many OWB objectsand mappings into their ODI equivalents. For more information about the migration utility,
see About the Migration Utility.
b. List out the objects that are migrated and those that have to be migrated manually .
c. Create a roadmap for migration including
a. Reviewing source and target System requirements
b. Configuration, running and review of the migration utility
c. Reviewing migration utility report for exclusions and reconciliation.
d. Get expert help through our Partner Network
e. For a detailed walk through of the process with explicit instructions use this guide.
