Welcome to the 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships.

Following the successful debut season of the newly formatted senior representative competition last year, we are pleased to continue to provide community leagues with the chance to battle it out for the ultimate local footy bragging rights.

The 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships promises to deliver another exciting round of community football, as the opportunity to participate in senior representative programs continues to be a highlight for footballers in community competitions across the state.

Today, a total of 30 leagues will compete in a one off head-to-head match across 15 different venues around Victoria.

This season, the Community Championships will take centre stage, with a host of players set to showcase their skills in front of big crowds in the heart of Melbourne’s sporting precinct.

Childhood dreams of playing on Australian football’s most hallowed turf will become a reality for a number of community footballers, with representative players from the number-one-ranked Geelong Football Netball League and second-placed Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League set to battle it out for the coveted number-one ranking title on the MCG.

The match will be played as a curtain-raiser to the Round 8 dedicated AFL Country Game between Essendon and Geelong.

This is a fantastic opportunity for not only players, but for umpires, coaches and volunteers to run out on the game’s biggest stage. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making this match a reality, including our competition sponsor WorkSafe, AFL, Essendon and Geelong Football Clubs for their support.

In addition to the Championships, the next generation of community football stars will also have the opportunity to don their local colours in a number of junior representative matches being played as curtain raisers to their Community Championship senior game.

This is a terrific initiative for younger players to be able to showcase their talent, represent their league and test their skills against some of the best players across metropolitan Melbourne and country Victoria.

Following on from a successful 2017 Community Umpiring Round last week, I would like to congratulate all the umpires who have been selected to adjudicate in today’s matches.

Their hard work, dedication and strong performances either in the V/Line Umpiring Academies or metropolitan league associations will put them in good stead to officiate community football’s top players.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the leagues, staff, players, coaches and volunteers involved in the 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, for their enthusiasm and support in the lead up to the event.

We hope that you enjoy the experience and wish you the best of luck for the remainder of the 2017 football season.

Welcome to the 2017 Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championships.

Last year saw the revamp of the Interleague concept. With competitions across Victoria now being ranked, it has allowed leagues to find their feet.

After breaking the drought in 2016, we this year have the privilege of hosting the Central Highlands Football League at Marriott Waters Reserve. We would like to welcome their players, Board and supporters to what should be a fantastic day of community sport.

We currently find ourselves ranked 23rd. As a League, we are working towards climbing the rankings but we are coming off a long run. We are creating a strong Interleague culture and our clubs are buying into the concept. This was the first step of rebuilding our Interleague program.

We are often asked why certain players aren’t playing or weren’t selected. Well, we want to have players that buy-in to the Interleague program, that understand that pulling on the SFNL jumper or dress is a privilege and not a right, and that will represent the League in the “Southern” way.

I would like to congratulate all the players

that have been selected for this weekend’s matches, including those players that were included in the extended squads. You have all made a strong contribution to the day.

To the coaches Ben Lockwood, Nathan Harris and Melanie Starr, and their team of assistant coaches and support staff, we again thank you for your dedication to the task. I suspect that it can be a challenging role but know that you have put everything into it.

Finally, I would like to thank Lyndhurst Football Netball Club and their many volunteers for hosting the day and to our partners, particularly our major Senior Interleague partner Gameday Mouthguards, for their continued support of our Interleague program. Special thanks are also extended to Blackchrome Sportswear, TWP, Leader Community News, Atura Dandenong, Club Warehouse, Sporting Fine Art, A-Grade Club Supplies and Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, who have generously donated gifts for our Interleague player packs this year.

On behalf of the Board and the greater SFNL community, I would like to wish all players, coaches and support teams the very best of luck for the day, and I have no doubt all matches will be played in a tough and competitive nature.

Own the South.

On behalf of the Bendigo Bank and Rural Bank Central Highlands Football League Board of management and member clubs, I welcome you to our 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championship interleague matches.

We extend our thanks to the Southern Football Netball League Chairman David Coutts and the league’s administration team for their assistance in organizing the matches today.

Thanks also to all players, support staff and supporters including those who have travelled to be part of this Victoria wide competition today, I hope you enjoy the matches of both football and netball and wish you all the best in your endeavours.

To the RSM CHFL Senior Interleague football coach Clive Raak and his coaching panel, Mark Gunnell, Tye Murphy and Jarrod Morgan, I congratulate you on your commitment and hard work in bringing the CHFL team of players together to participate today and wish you the very best in your quest for another successful interleague game.

The league is fortunate to have secured Johno Leoncini and Mick Rix as the U19 coaches again, we thank the players, coaches and support staff for their participation and hope the players look at this opportunity as a pathway to senior interleague involvement in the future.

I also offer my congratulations to both Netball League’s Presidents, committees, netball coaches and players. I hope you enjoy the experience and thank you all for your support in bringing together your team for today’s matches.

This day would not be possible without the myriad of volunteers who offer their support both prior to and during the day’s matches. I thank each and every one of those people, who are too numerous to mention. A special mention though to the Southern Football Netball League staff for hosting the matches today, and the support they have given to the Central Highlands FL in the lead up to today.

We are very fortunate to have the support of some dedicated sponsors, I sincerely hope that we are able to extend our hospitality to you today and that you find the experience of being involved with the Interleague competition an enjoyable one.

RSM has very kindly sponsored the senior team for the sixth year now and I hope our partnership continues. The Bendigo Bank and Rural Bank CHFL greatly appreciate your involvement in this very important program for the overall development of the league.

The CHFL U19 match has again been sponsored by Shaun Tuddenham from Cutting Edge Joinery and we thank Shaun for his ongoing support of the team.

Last season’s drought-breaking representative victory over Ellinbank & District has seen confidence restored at the Southern Football Netball League.

But rather than being content with his success to date, SFNL interleague coach Ben Lockwood remains firmly committed to leading the League’s charge up the AFL Victoria rankings.

This Saturday the SFNL will look to take another step forward as it hosts Central Highlands FL at Marriott Waters Reserve, Lyndhurst, as part of the 2017 Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championships.

Lockwood, who returns to the helm for his second year in charge, said the 2017 squad had been buoyed by last year’s success.

“What we’ve found is that there is a lot more players willing to buy in and be a part of (the Interleague team)… and some part of that may be due to us winning last year,” Lockwood said.

“This year, more than last year, it has been a lot harder to pick a side. I know this day last year when we were picking a side, we only had 25, 26 to pick from. Last night we probably still had 35 guys around the mark.”

Southern carved up the bigger-bodied Ellinbank side last year, with its outside runners utilising the vast expanses of the Lyndhurst ground to full advantage. Lockwood believes their home venue will again play into their hands this time around.

“The ground’s big, we’ve got an inside knowledge of that, so we pick a squad that we know will cover

the ground,” Lockwood said.

“Our thing with our guys is if we can cover the ground and

move the footy quick, we might be able to put

(Central Highlands) under some real

pressure.

“We’re going to go in with the same mindset

as last year, just play clear-minded

footy and be really attacking.”

Lockwood expects up to a dozen players from the victorious 2016 side may take to the field again on Saturday, with a couple of others set to return from previous campaigns.

Dingley premiership star Andrew Frost, who will represent the SFNL for the third consecutive year, has assumed the Interleague captaincy from Tony Lavars. Lavars hung up the boots after leading the Dingoes to a second straight premiership win last year, but has remained involved in the Interleague program as an assistant coach.

East Malvern’s Nathan Robinson, who also played in the 2016 triumph, and Dingo Jackson Peet (a two-time SFNL representative in 2014 and 2015) have been appointed vice captains.

Robinson is set to play a key role in the Southern midfield alongside Panthers teammate Ed Sim and Keysborough’s Geoff Humphreys. The trio provided plenty of grunt around the contest last year and are expected to play similar roles again this year.

Meanwhile several big-name Dingoes may also get the chance to showcase their on-ball polish on Saturday. Peet, Lucas Walmsley, Robert Rusan, Josh Ferguson and Chris Horton-Milne, a Vic Metro representative in 2016, are all able to inflict significant damage with ball in hand and may be rotated through the midfield on Saturday.

The backline, a real strength for the SFNL in 2016, is poised to remain largely unchanged, with Frost, Cheltenham gun Daniel Vaughan and Oakleigh District’s Pat Carroll all likely to return.

Up forward, we can again expect a mobile forward structure. Dingley star Dan Farmer and Port Colts’ Torren Bonnett, who coincidentally lined up for the Western Region FL side against Southern in 2014, have been added to the squad alongside the dynamic duo of Jordan Peryman (Chelsea Heights) and Joel Jones-Hampton (Highett).

But Lockwood expects Walmsley, who has returned to Souter Oval after two successful years in the VFL system, to be the player that will have the biggest impact come Saturday.

“If you were going to make a ground to suit Lucas Walmsley, it’s going to be Lyndhurst. Heaps of space for him to run into and he can sprint super hard,” he said.

The senior football match kicks off at 2:10pm.

SFNL SENIORS CHASE BACK TO BACK CROWNS / WILL HUNTER

The Central Highlands Football League rejoined senior interleague representative football in 2012 after more than 15 years and had a dream run for the first four years. But last year Geelong & District FL stopped the CHFL’s climb up the rankings, running down a CHFL eight-point lead in the last two minutes.

Many of today’s RSM Central Highlands FL team were part of that defeat and will be keen to ensure that they bounce back on to the victors’ list.

In fact, two of the team, Jarrod Morgan and Mark Gunnell, have been part of each of the matches since 2012, which is an enormous contribution to the league.

Clive Raak is in his second year of coaching the CHFL team and has surrounded himself with strong onfield leaders who aim to bring the team forward with them.

Jarrod Morgan, Mark Gunnell and Tye Murphy all have been given this leadership responsibility.

Morgan as playing coach of the strong Buninyong outfit is a leader of the highest quality and will ensure that he is providing plenty of drive through the midfield.

Mark Gunnell will be prominent in the back line with the ability to nullify most key forwards that he comes across.

Tye Murphy will spend time moving through the middle of the ground and then adding strength to the forward line.

There appears to be a good mix in the midfield of hard inside players and an ability to spread the ball once it is under control.

Joel Maher from Springbank has been a leading player across the competition at whatever grade he has played in with all of his football at the Tigers.

He has the ability to be where the ball is when it has to be won, and usually wins more of these contests than most.

As with all representative sides there is a predominance of players who are midfielders on

a week to week basis which gives Raak a great deal of flexibility in how he manages the team.

Jarrod Rodgers, Daniel Wehrung, Luke Gunnell, Jack Duke and Mick Nolan have all shown in previous representative matches that they can have an impact through the midfield and then prove a headache for defenders when they drift forward.

A number of young players will be getting their first chances at this level after having excellent starts to the season, including Jack Robertson from Buninyong.

After winning the league Under 18 Best & Fairest award a number of years ago, Robertson is now having an impact on a weekly basis and this game is a tremendous reward for his efforts.

In defence, Justin Simpson will have a key role. He has always shown the ability to take on a challenge and show just how talented he is.

There is a sense of uncertainty in approaching this first encounter against a metropolitan league in senior representative football but also a real excitement to take on the challenge and build on what has been a very successful program for the CHFL for the past five years.

The annual Interleague weekend has rolled around again, and this year the Southern FNL welcomes the representatives of the Central Highlands Netball League to do battle at Marriott Waters.

Southern coach Mel Starr has been delighted at the buy-in from the clubs this season. Almost unanimously they have got behind the concept, which has allowed a good pool of players and coaching assistants from which to form a squad. The selectors have gone for strength and versatility in those that they have picked, and have worked hard in training to mould a combination that they feel can bring home victory.

To this end, Caulfield defenders Phoebe Naughton and Alice Pohlner have been selected as the pillars of the Southern defence. They offer height, athleticism and also have the advantage of playing together each Saturday. They are augmented by Dingley’s skilful tall defender Brittany Goldsmith, who has developed a reputation for making life difficult for the very best shooters that Southern has to offer.

In the mid-court, Southern has looked to St Kilda City and Mordialloc to provide a settled combination that can work together whilst providing the vital elements needed for a solid engine room. In Louise Moetu they have a supremely fit, athletic wing defence/centre who will run all day and surprise with her leap

and agility. Chloe Ballard brings the experience and intelligence that any successful mid-court

combination needs, while Lucy McKeown from

Mordialloc provides a no-nonsense

approach with the consistency and ultra-competitiveness

to do the hard work required to get the job

done. Chloe and Lucy

are two of the better attacking mid-courters in the SFNL and will feel that they can provide excellent angles and opportunities for the Southern shooters. Alanna Harris compliments this triumvirate with her elite agility and running capacity, and the flexibility to excel in any mid-court role.

St Kilda City’s Jessica Jones heads Southern’s shooting division. She brings presence, poise and authority to the goal circle and will also add vital leadership skills to the team. She is ably assisted by one of the best young talents in the SFNL in the deadly accurate St Pauls spearhead Grace Healey. The third member of the Southern arsenal is fellow St Kilda City shooter Rosie Augl. Rosie has the strength and adaptability to be a perfect foil for whoever she may partner in the goal circle.

Southern are under no illusions – they know that the Central Highlands will bring with them a strong squad that is not intent on venturing home without capturing the win. Coach Jordan O’Keefe has the know-how and experience required to build a cohesive unit capable of a strong performance. Eight of his nine-member squad play for clubs in the top eight of the 16-team A Grade competition, three of whom are coached by O’Keefe at the dominant Learmonth club. In captain Kelly Conroy from Springbank, Central Highlands have a skilful performer with an impressive list of achievements for one who is still quite a young player, and there are few weak links among her band of able lieutenants.

The netball begins at 2.30pm at the impressive Lyndhurst complex. All of us at the SFNL wish all players and officials the best of luck for a successful afternoon, and may the best team win.

Interleague 2017 is a very exciting prospect for us this year with today the first step in a three-month campaign across our four teams. Today we commence with 17/Under, proudly coached by Steph Blyth in her second year as an Interleague coach with CHNL. Steph is well supported by Team Manager Melissa Conroy and Team Primary Carer Emma Quayle today, ensuring that our top nine players are ready and raring to go, hoping to better their last foray in Interleague with a resounding win. Sarah Campbell is captaining this squad for the first time and is excited to lead her team with strength, determination and hard-won ball, a mainstay of her style of play. Many of our 17/Under players are new to Interleague this year, so are excited by the opportunity and also, I am sure, nervous for the first whistle to blow.

Jordan O’Keefe, Senior CHNL Interleague Coach and 2017 Interleague Coordinator, is back for season four leading the charge. His first two seasons were very successful with wins at each meeting, but 2016 we saw a very tough opposition in Geelong and District FNL and came away in second place. Jordan has handpicked a team with many new faces this year, height at the bookends of the court and speed and safe hands a mainstay of the centre court players. Kelly Conroy captains the well drilled squad in 2017. Having been a player of Interleague for the past few seasons, and with a wealth of experience behind her, she is hungry for the win and is driving her team to follow in her footsteps. Anne Wade will manage the team today and Emma Quayle will again ensure any first aid requirements are well looked after.

New and exciting times for us at CHNL this year with our new apparel sponsors, Haymes Paint, coming on board and we are happily wearing our new hoodies advertising our new partnership.

Well, 40 young ladies and women are ready to hit the court, awaiting the opportunity to show their prowess and hoping to go home with the winning trophy and a medallion around their necks. Coaches walking with their eyes averted as their minds ponder the hundreds of possibilities of what might happen on court; the numerous position changes they may make dependant on the state of play; the stirring in their bottom of their bellies, relishing the game of chess that coaches play against their opposition counterpart. Good luck to one and all, may you play well, play hard and play in the spirit of our wonderful game… Netball.
