What is the Owen Wister Review? This question has plagued me over and over as I continue to work on it each year. My answer
continues to be: A journal reflective of the West. For some this answer has been problematic. A journal of the West? A collection of Cowboy and Indian stories? Isn’t that out of date? Yes, precisely.
My aim has been to represent the West not in some cliché form, although this sometimes fits, but rather to put on exhibition the humanity of the West. This year more so than other our submissions seemed to embody the chaos and uncertainty, the fear and apprehension that we see within our country today. Some of this is represented here. The West is not a segregated society within the bounds of this country but a subject. But as a poetic juxtaposition the West has also be represented with a sense of permanence. We are not segregated or biased and are subject to the forces around us but the West is an unchanging spirit and force that mediates the tides. This too can be found. The West is isolated from other areas to a degree. We are an independent spirit that remains constant while the rest changes. We are not exclusive though. Anyone with the desire can experi-ence and become a part of the West, if not in locale than in mind.
The spirit of the West perhaps can only be defined by the West. It is as fluid as the creeks and streams the flow; it is as violent as the flood in the spring melt. The West is as rigid as the mountains–our picturesque em-bodiment. It can be as unrelenting as a winter snow storm and as peaceful as a fall breeze. For those not native, it is as fresh as the first breath of wild air; and for the natives, it is home.
This our West. It has come together because you. You write, you read, you create and, most of all, you share this. This journal exists only because of you and only for you. Wherever and whoever you are may this serve as an escape, an adventure, a peek into the looking glass or a journey home.
Thank you,
Joshua Watanabe
