MEETING on 27 November (6.00 pm for 6.30 pm start)

Bulletin Volume; 29 Issue No; 10 27 November 2018

FATHER CHRISTOPHER GARDINERRetired Franciscan priest who will be talking about his posting to St. Petersburg, Russia for 7 years. His talk is something different.

Father Gardiner was born in Paddington, spent his primary education in West Wyalong and Bowral, before attending secondary education at Waverley College.

Father Christopher Gardiner studied at Waverley College with Norm Gibson but their occupations went in opposite directions after they finished the Leaving Certificate and left school. Christopher became a Franciscan priest. Norm ????? (no prizes for the best answer).

Christopher studied a variety of subjects at the University of Queensland, James Cook University of North Queensland at Townsville and the University of South Australia, obtained a B.A. degree and became registered as a Psychologist in South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria.

He has had various interesting Australian and international postings during his career as a priest including 5 years in the Holy Land, Israel and 2 years in Rome.

At our meeting this Tuesday, he will speak about his 7 years as a priest with the Franciscan Foundation in St. Petersburg, Russia. He arrived alone on 28 November 2008, in a communist country with its harsh weather, speaking and writing virtually no Russian and knowing no one. Certainly a challenging start.

In 2016 Father Gardiner returned to Australia.

PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORT

At the last meeting we had a speaker from Northbridge Rotary club speaking about the Timor Leste water projects in the villages of Lete-Foho and Ermera. We will be involved with them in a water project . We were given full details of the project and the progress to date .He also told of the success of the teacher’s college we were involved in and another water project they have completed.

The last Bunnings was a success in spite of the short notice,We had a full compliment and made a profit of $1,300. There are other Bunnings on 7 and 29

December. They have offered us a number of Fridays. The profit on Fridays is half that on the weekends .The club will have to decide if we want to take up this offer.

Peter Lefmann has invited nominations for the board for the 2019/2020 year. The critical positions are president, secretary, treasurer, youth, community and club administration (programmes, social, sergeant-at-arms). It is also essential for the election of a President-Elect, who will become President for 2020/2021.

The board has agreed to changes to the bylaws and they will be issued to the club before the AGM and will be voted on in February 2019 . The main changes are simplifying them and making them more flexible and the introduction of up to 2 Vice-Presidents .The Vice Presidents will be members of the board and will assist the president.

In the second half of the year we will concentrate on membership and fund raising. We hope to have some fund raising suggestions at the next meeting.

The speaker at the next meeting will be a friend of Norm Gibsons who is a retired Franciscan priest who has held positions all over the world .He will mainly talk about his period in St Petersburg. Apparently he knows a bit about vodka. It could be a very interesting evening.

Don’t forget the AGM on 4th December and the Christmas party on 11 December.

Richard GreenPresident.

Christmas Cocktail Party this Year

Please note that;

There is no Kris Kringle this year.

Instead St Nicholis will hand out sweets to the members, partners and guests, as he did 2,000 years ago.

Its Christmas time so everyone is invited to wear something colourful, bright and Christmassy.

The tradition in many European countries is that Saint Nicholas comes on the night of 5 December and leaves presents for the good children. Saint Nicholas was a real person and he was heavily involved in the Catholic Church.

He was born in Greece into a rich family. He had a reputation as a generous person and gave money to the needy . He was also for saving sailors in desires. Thus he is the patron saint of children and sailors.

Initially he arrived on the 5 December and gave money, later gifts, to good children and nothing to those who had misbehaved.

In later years in Eastern Europe he was accompanied by a black monster whose job it was to punish the bad children and Saint Nicholas became the good guy.

In the Low Countries he was accompanied by Schwarz Pete, Black Peter. They both came from Spain. Black Peter is a black skinned person with curly hair. It is not sure where the tradition of Black Peter came from but one theory is at the time the Moors, a dark skinned people who lived in Spain, were known to capture Europeans and take them back to Spain. Hence he is meant to punish bad children and threaten to take them off to Spain.

The tradition of Black Peter still exists in the Low Countries even now some people say it is racist . You can find many publication in the English papers saying the Dutch are racist because they continue the tradition.

As a Rotary Club we have decided to be politically correct and have not invited Black Peter to our function.

LAST MEETING 13 November-BARRY ANDERSONNORTHBRIDGE ROTARY - TIMOR LESTE PROJECT

Left: Timor Leste. Dili is 90 minutes flying from Darwin. Right: The district ofErmera showing the villages of Lete-Foho and Ermera – the sites of the projects.Below are some photos of the project and the local children.

At our last meeting we were delighted to welcome fellow Rotarian, and long-term member of the Rotary Club of Northbridge, Barry Anderson. Barry has been a member of Northbridge Rotary for 34 years and is clearly an active, dedicated and highly committed Rotarian. Clearly a role model for all Rotarians.

Barry gave a very interesting talk and presentation on the Rotary involvement with local communities in East Timor. The Bulletin Introduction in the last Bulletin (29/9 13th November) gave a good summary of the work that Barry and the Northbridge Team have been involved in – so I won’t repeat that here. Barry talked enthusiastically about previous projects and then about the latest water supply and sanitation project in the Ermera area. The Rotary Club of Roseville Chase is proud to join with Northbridge in helping to fund this, and other valuable projects to support to the people of East Timor.PP Peter Lewis

Left: The 5 kW 3 phase pump being installed by local villagers. Right: The pump installed with its security fence and weather protection The pump is powered by the electricity system which covers much of the country – but primarily for public buildings and systems.

This project was the first water project in Timor Leste by Northbridge Rotary. It was completed in July 2017. Earlier projects include a teacher resource centre which has been operating there for 10 years and, at the time of Interfet, the supply of a complete container load of school needs.

GRAFFITI BUSTERS

The Roseville Chase Rotary Club ‘Graffiti Busters Team’ were out with the trailer again on Thursday 15th November, continuing the campaign to keep our beautiful area free of the ugly scourge of graffiti.

It would seem that the end of HSC Exams and the start of school holidays are a typical trigger that causes some youthful brains to implode and think it is OK to vandalize other people’s property! Incomprehensible! We ‘hit’ about 10 sites, including the ones below

The photos, on the following page, are of our trailer and A-frame sign on the Pacific Highway, Roseville, a mail storage box at junction Clanville Road and Hill Street, and one of a number of walls at the Roseville Cinema and nearby properties.

We are in communication with the owner of Roseville Cinema and following our advice that we had painted over the graffiti, we received the following excellent message.

“Thanks so much Peter I greatly appreciate it. Also we got one of the faces of the 2 boys on our CCTV system and have given a copy to Chatswood police. Many thanks Emma”

Hopefully we will have further success in combating this mindless criminal activity.

We would also like to commend PP and Rotary Friend John Hammond for his ‘Graffiti Busting’ activities in his local Roseville Chase area. Although he retired from our Rotary Club, John continues to be a tireless pursuer and remover of graffiti in the area.

We would also like to thank Storage King, Chatswood for their continuing valuable support. They have provided us with a storage unit to store the trailer – free of charge –– for the past 8-9 years.Thank you Storage King!

The response across Australia to the drought on the east coast has been very humbling for all involved. Companies big and small, donors like you with small and large personal donations has meant we’ve been able to provide assistance like never before.

This year alone…

• Over 4500 farmers have registered for various types of assistance• 2000 farmers have received hay, currently growing at 30 a week• 1000’s of hampers, water trucks, fuel cards and vouchers

Since 1 July 2018 we have:-

• Employed 11 mental health counsellors with committed funding of $5.5m over 3 years• More than $20m in total cash donations has been accepted by Rural Aid• Over 2200 counselling telephone one-on-one calls or face to face visits to farmers in 4 months• $3m paid for hay distributed to farmers in need• $2.3m paid in freight to deliver the hay• $6m for bill relief for farmers• Forward commitment to purchase $11m of hay and transport for next 6 months.• More than $1.2m provided to farmers in the form of gift cards which can be spent locally• Expanded our team by 7 people so that we can respond to enquiries and provide help faster to those most in need.

In the last two weeks we’ve moved 76 and 88 trailers respective, almost 3500 tonnes of hay in two weeks which was delivered to over 300 farmers. This is amazing work by our hay team, truckies and hay producers who are all pulling together an amazing support effort. We’ve now added SA farmers into our list receiving assistance just last weekend.

Farmers like Derani B from NSW write

“I am writing to say a heartfelt thank you to your organisation and volunteers for the gift cards we received recently. The generosity of the Australian Public has been touching and while we still wait for rain, it is comforting to know that we are supported by wonderful people like yourselves.”

Hi All,As you know we collected $36,650 to support the farmers. $20,000 has already been spent IGA vouchers including $10.000 from Northbridge leaving $16,650 in our benevolent account.

Money has been pouring in from the various charity groups such as Channel 9, Rotary Aust.World Community and the National Farmers Federation.

Channel 7 appeal has already raised over $8 million which has been distributed to about 20 organisations including 7 Rotary Districts.

Buy-a- Bale is the other organisation which we are supporting through the green collection bins.

Both Alan and I have had extensive discussions with our contact at the Rural Financial Counselling Service to establish how best this money can be spent.Without any hesitation he informed us that they are in desperate need for people to administer the financial allocation of funds and to assist farmers with the paperwork involved.

The Rotary Club of Forbes is already supporting this request. This process will go on for months and the sooner it is done the sooner the farmers will get the benefit.

Our $16,650 will allow a person to be employed on a 3 day per week basis for 6 to 9 months.

Your committee would therefore recommend that this proposal be accepted and be endorsed accordingly.

The money to be sent to the RFCS Dubbo for the attention of the CEO Jeff Caldeck.

Yours in Rotary P/P Bruce CarfraeConvenor.
