The Write Idea

Hundreds of letters and articles are printed every day inpapers and magazines. They provide interest and informationfor readers and money for the writers. A debatable topic canproduce much discussion. Letters are seldom acknowledged.Unless you read the publications to which you contribute, youwill never know whether a cheque is due to you.

Allow time for publication, as daily papers can take 2 weeksand weeklies 4 weeks. Magazines may keep your letter orarticle for months and then suddenly decide to publish it. It isa good idea to keep a record of what you write and where it issent.

Letters today can be sent quickly by e-mail which is desirableif the subject involves a topical issue. A short letter can beworth £1 per word!

What can you write about? Our advice is to write aboutsubjects that are familiar to you. Even more important is totarget the letter to the style and readership of the particularmagazine or journal. Extract the letters pages from thetabloid papers and popular magazines and look at the subjectmatter. This may be anecdotal, informative, humorous orletters of praise.
