Oxford Taekwon-do School Students walk away

with an array of Medals after competing in their

first National Taekwon-do Competition at the

Welsh Open Championships on Sunday 22

September in Cardiff.

After a long day of competing to be the best in

Patterns, Sparring, Destruction and Special

Techniques, at one of the UK’s largest Taekwon-do

tournaments, attracting hundreds of competitors

from all over England, Scotland, Wales and

Ireland, the four students walked away with a

medal each.

Senior Master Mitchell, VIII Dan Instructor, was

very proud of what his students achieved.

Shakin Rai, 12, who will soon be grading for his

Black Belt, was crowned Welsh Taekwon-do

Sparring Champion, after fighting in a tough and

competitive category to achieve the Gold Medal;

while Sandip Limbu, 13, who will be a Blue Belt

after his next grading, achieved a Bronze Medal in

Sparring despite being up against much more

experienced fighters.

Greg Gzielo, 18, who is

also eligible to grade for

his Black Belt, achieved a

Bronze Medal in the

Destruction category,

where students have to

be focused to accurately using the correct

technique with enough force to break through

specially designed toughened plastic focus boards.

The Students who train at Rose Hill

Community Centre on Thursdays, Fridays

and Saturdays; Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre

on Mondays; and East Oxford Community

Centre on Wednesdays, are focused and

dedicated when it comes to learning the

Korean Martial Art of Self Defense which is

known for it’s flying techniques, kicks and

strikes; combing self defense techniques

with sport and exercise.

We want to improve safety at the Rose Hill Community Centre venue by purchasing more foam mats to protect students from possible injury should they fall on the hard floor while training or sparring. We currently have access to a small number of mats, but would like to be able to cover a wider area of the floor. Most of the fees paid by students goes back into paying for the venues, which give students the opportunity to train up to 5 times a week; plus purchase equipment like pads, sparring and protective equipment. In order to purchase additional mats, we need to raise additional funds. We would like students, parents, carers and friends to help us to come up with ideas for raising funds!

Having conquered at the Welsh Open only a month before, the students

competed in the Birmingham Open Championships in October, full of

confidence and fighting spirit, and walked away with nine medals between

the six contenders. Akash Rai (Blackbelt) bronze patterns, bronze sparring;

Simon Olivier (Black Tag) Gold Sparring, Silver Patterns and Kimberley

McNicol (yellow belt) Gold Patterns, Bronze Sparring; Shakin (Black Tag)

Gold Pattern and Sparring; Sandip (Blue Tag) Bronze Sparring, and Greg

(Black Tag) came second in the destruction category but sadly received no

medal for his hard work, as a medal was only awarded for first place.

To end the year on a competitive and fun note, it was decided that Mount Everest Taekwon-

do School will be putting on their first Club Tournament in Rose Hill Community Centre.

It is an opportunity for all students to demonstrate the skills and techniques they have been

learning in Taekwon-do classes, and take home Gold, Silver or Bronze medals.

The tournament will take place on Saturday 21st December from 3pm. Students will be

judged on patterns, sparring and destruction. The nominal cost will be £5 per student.

We would like to see all JUNIOR students taking part in the

tournament.
