OZITRACKER AND DIGITAL MAPPING

Since OziTracker is based on OziExplorer GPS Mapping software, it supports the same digital mapping formats. Including digital maps produced by Spectrum Digital Imaging, Map Town, QuoVadis Navigation, and MapTech. Some of the other formats are:

• Universal Geotiff format, called DRG in the USA. The data can be topographical maps, satellite imagery, aerial photos and air charts.

• ERMapper's Compress Wavelet (.ecw) and Lizard Tech's MrSID(.sid) formats. These two formats are used to compress large ortho photo images, satellite images and mosaiced topographical images down to a mangeable file size. These formats are very computer RAM friendly because they only pull into memory what is displayed on the screen. This also allows for fast screen refresh rates when tracking vehicles.

• Universal BSB/KAP format (.bsb/kap). Maptech(USA) and NDI(Canada) produce digital marine charts in this format.

• Vector formats can be converted to be used with Ozitracker including AutoCad .dxf or .dwg, Adobe .pdf, and ESRI shape(.shp) file to name a few. If you have your own data and you want to know if it can be used with Ozitracker contact Spectrum Digital Imaging Ltd .

Importing Digital Mapping

Digital Maps with OziExplorer Calibration Files(.map)

• All digital mapping data has to have an OziExplorer calibration file (.map) included with the image. This includes all the digital formats mentioned above.

• The calibration files are created by using the Import Feature in Ozitracker or by manually calibrating the image in Ozitracker or OziExplorer (File/Load and Calibrate Map Image). Canadian topographical maps produced by Spectrum Digital Imaging, Map Town, and Quo Vadis have the calibration file (.map)

included with their maps. To use this type of digital map, create a folder on your hard drive and call it Digital Maps. Copy the image to this folder and copy the corresponding .map file to C:\Ozitracker_Digital\Maps. Start Ozitracker and on the taskbar click on File\Configuration\Map Images\Image File Paths. Path 1 C:\Digital Maps or change drive letter to suit. Under Check Drives put a check in the box opposite the corresponding drive. Click Save.

Digital Mapping Without Calibration Files• The following digital mapping formats do not normally have OziExplorer calibration files included with the

image and they will have to use the Import feature to create a calibration file.

• The Import Feature either creates a calibration file from the parameters imbeded in a image or a file included with image that lists the georeferencing parameters. The Import Feature, when it is creating the calibration file (.map), will write to the file instructions for OziTracker to show where it can find the image. For example on a cdrom, dvd or on the hard drive.

Page 9: OziTracker SOFTWARE Digital FOR ICOM IDAS VHF/UHF RADIOSinfo4u.us/OziTracker-Manual.pdf · 2010. 7. 11. · OziTracker Digital Setup Hardware Requirements (See page 21 for computer

Compatible OziTracker Map Formats

Importing Mapping Data in OziTracker

1. On your hard drive create a folder that relates to the type of the digital mapping data for example C:\US Marine Charts, C:\Canadian Air Charts, C:\Canadian Topographical Maps, C:\Pipeline Data, C:\Street Level Mapping etc.

2. Copy the data to the folder.

3. On the OziTracker taskbar click on File\Import Map. Depending on the format, the procedure is similar and the exceptions are noted below for each format. Image File Path is the folder you created to hold the mapping data, for example C:\Canadian Topographical Maps. This path has to be correct or the feature will not work, if you are not sure, click on the little folder on the right and find the folder, double click to open and click OK. Map File Path default is C:\OziTracker_Digital\Maps, do not change.

4. Click on Import and wait until a message appears stating how many maps were imported successfully. It may seem like nothing is happening but only click on Import once. If you have a hard drive light on your computer it will be flickering which means the program is writing or rewriting the calibration files.

* Do not leave the Image File Path at C:\ or you will import the root directory.

Geotiffs(DRG's) Maps Universal mapping format used by many countries around the world, including Canada and the USA,normally in .tif format. Geotiff's have the georeferencing imbeded in the image and are normally accompanied by a World File(.tfw).File\Import Map\Single DRG Map or All DRG Maps on a CD or in a Folder. Put a check mark in Use Geotiff if available box.

Canadian NDI and USA Maptech BSB Marine ChartsThe .kap files and the .bsb files have to be in the same folder. The charts have to be registered with NDI.File\Import Map\Single BSB or NOS\GEO ChartFile\Import Map\All BSB or NOS\GEO Charts on a CD or in a Folder.

USA Maptech RML. PCX, 024 or AER, Marine Charts and Air ChartsFile\Import Map\Maptech RML, PCX, 024. or AER Charts

QuoVadis Navigator Maps on CDSame import procedure as maps calibrated for Oziexplorer.File\Import Map\QuoVadis Navigator Maps on CD

Ortho Photos, Satellite, Lidar, LandSat Images in ECW FormatECW(.ecw) format is an excellent file compression for large images. The image projections must be UTM or Lat/Long.Same import procedure as maps calibrated for Oziexplorer.File\Import Map\ECW Maps(UTM or Lat/Long based only)

• To use the maps and satellite images from the Internet you need a direct hi-speed connection. You can use a wireless connection but the screen refresh rates will be slower.

• Street level mapping for all the major cities in the world. Street level mapping for all of the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and Mexico. The types of street level mapping are Open Street, Open Cycle, Virtual Earth Streets and Google Maps. Virtual Earth Hybrid is a combination of satellite imagery and street level mapping.

• Google Earth and Virtual Earth Satellite imagery for most parts of the world, some areas have more detail than others.

• Google Earth Terrain topographical maps for most areas of the world, some areas have more detail than others.

• USA Terraserver satellite imagery and scale 1:24 000 topographical maps for all of the United States.

Internet Mapping Data

• From the Maps folder on the OziTracker DVD copy the files USA Terraserver.map and Internet.map to C:\OziTracker_Digital\Maps

• When using Internet mapping it can be difficult to move to the required location. Use Name Search to find the location. On the DVD in the Name Search folder there are names for all the 48 US states, Canada and the World. Copy the required name search files to C:\Ozitracker_Digital\Name Search folder.

• To load a name file, on the menu click on the Name icon . Click on Load, select the required name file, click on Open. Enter a name to find, select the name from the list, click on the bullseye icon to center the name on the map. For more information click on ? Help.

STARTING OZITRACKER

• To start OziTracker click on the OziTracker Digital icon on the desktop or click on Start\Programs \OziTrackerDigital\OziTracker Digital.

• Before OziTracker can start tracking there has to be a blank map or a map loaded. To load the blank map go to the taskbar and click on Map\Blank Map (Auto Scale). The blank map is for test purposes. To load a map go to the taskbar and click on Load\Load Map File, make sure you are in the C:\OziTracker_Digital\Maps folder, select a map and click on Open.

• To start the program communicating with the field radios go to the menu and click on the OziTracker icon, or on the taskbar click on OziTracker\Start OziTracker or press Ctrl+M key. In the Main Window click on Start. There should be no error messages. If you get an error opening comport message, the comport number is wrong, also the baud rate has to be 9600.

• If the program is polling the field radio for a fix there will be sentences going out of the I/O asking the field radio for the gps string. If the field radios are programmed to automatically send the gps string at predetermined intervals, there will be a gps string coming into the I/O. If the gps string coming into the I/O is not a good fix, there will be a Position Invalid beside the vehicle icon on the map and there will be an asterisk (*) beside the lat/long in the Main window.

• One by one the vehicles should appear in the Main window and an icon for each vehicle that is being tracked, will appear on the map.

• Everyday a new track file (.plt) is created for each vehicle in C:\OziTracker\AVL data. For track logging make sure the Log Tracks box is checked in Ozitracker\Configuration\System. The track file can be replayed in OziExplorer GPS Mapping software.

*Note Even though all the vehicles are being tracked and logged to file, only the vehicle that has a check in the box willbe followed and centered on the map. If the tracking is across multiple maps, the maps will change as the vehiclemoves. If they do not, the maps have not been properly calibrated and are probably missing the corner markers. You can also center any vehicle on the map and follow it, by right clicking on the vehicle icon and selecting CenterVehicle on Map.

Understanding Waypoints and Points

Points

A Point is a GIS vector layer showing a position on a vector map. Below is a section of a vector map from Microsoft Streets & Trips showing different points. OziTracker can work with Point files that are in ESRI shape format (.shp), but OziTractor cannot create a Proximity Zone around a Point. The program has to convert the Point to a Waypoint. OziTracker does not work with vector maps, only raster maps, but vector maps can be converted to raster maps.

Waypoints

Waypoints are very similar to Points except Waypoints can be uploaded to a gps receiver, Points cannot. Waypoints are very configurable in OziTracker, Points are not. Points and Waypoint positions can be anything; bus stops, post offices, oil and gas well heads, schools, banks, pumping stations, electrical transmission towers, airports, etc.

Reducing Screen Clutter

Over a period of time and depending on the scale of the map, the screen can get cluttered with tracking data. To reduce the clutter do the following:

• Clear the screen of all the vehicles and tracking data by clicking on Reset. This cannot be undone.

• If a vehicle is on a fixed working schedule and it has completed the schedule and will not be running for the remainder of the day, highlight the vehicle with the mouse and click Clear. The vehicle and the track will be cleared from the map. If the radio is not turned off and is still transmitting, the vehicle will reappear on the map.

• To only show the vehicles that you are interested in and to hide the others, highlight the unwanted vehicles and click on the Show/Hide button. To show the vehicles again, highlight the vehicle and click on Show/Hide button.

• To stop tracking all the vehicles click on Stop, to resume click on Start.

• If you only want to see the vehicle icon on the screen go to OziTracker\System, uncheck the Show Labels and Show Point Labels boxes.

PROXIMITY AND ALARM ZONES

Zones that can be created on the maps that will record to a Proximity Log when a vehicle enters or leaves a zone.

The zones can be Alarm Proximities, a distance around a waypoint, or Alarm Zones, a tracked out area.

Waypoint Proximity Zones

• Waypoint Proximity Zones are good for fixed points on a map that have a known latitude/longitude or UTM

position such as a wellhead, pumping station, postal boxes, transmission towers, bus stops, etc.

• To create a Waypoint Proximity Zone click on the Waypoint Icon on the taskbar and click on on the map where you want to create the waypoint.

• Right click on the waypoint and choose Properties. Enter a name for the waypoint and a description if required. In Proximity Distance enter distance in Feet or Meters. The Distance Units are set in File \Configuration\Maps\Distance Units. Once the information has been entered click Save. For more help click on ? Help.

15

Page 16: OziTracker SOFTWARE Digital FOR ICOM IDAS VHF/UHF RADIOSinfo4u.us/OziTracker-Manual.pdf · 2010. 7. 11. · OziTracker Digital Setup Hardware Requirements (See page 21 for computer

Proximity and Alarm Zones continued

• Every time a Waypoint or Waypoints are created they go on to a Waypoint List (Alt+W). From the Waypoint List any map that can display that Waypoint can be found. Read about Waypoints in OziTracker Help (F1).

• Always save your Waypoints before shutting down OziTracker or they will be lost. To save the waypoints, click on Save\Save Waypoint to File, give the file a name, click Save. Waypoints should be saved in

C:\OziTracker_Digital\AvlData or create your own folder.

• To load a Waypoint Proximity Zone every time a certain map is opened, click on File\Configuration\Auto Load Files. In the Select Files window click on the Folder icon on the right and find the Waypoint file (.wpt) When automatically loading a Proximity Zone the icon will look like this image. A waypoint that has a Proximity Zone around it but cannot be edited to change the properties and it does not appear in the Waypoint list (Alt+W).

• To change the properties of a Waypoint Proximity, manually load the waypoint file by going to the taskbar and clicking on Load\Load Waypoints from File. Make sure you are in the C:\OziTracker_Digital\Data folder, find the waypoint file (.wpt) and click Open. The icon will now have a symbol or a dot. Now the properties can be changed by right clicking on the icon.

Alarm Zones

• Alarm Zones are areas created around regular or irregular areas on a map, they can be railyards seaplane bases, cut blocks, seaports, search areas etc. To create an Alarm Zone click on icon on

the taskbar and track out the required area with the mouse. If you make a mistake, remove the Alarm

Zone by going to the taskbar and clicking on Map\Clear\Track from Map. If there are other Alarm Zones

on the map they are also going to be removed, every time a Alarm Zone is created it must be saved to file.

• To save an Alarm Zone after it has been created go to the taskbar and click on Save\Save Alarm to File, give the file a name that will be remembered and click on Save. Alarm Zone files (.plt) are saved in

C:\OziTracker_Digital\AvlData or create your own folder.

• Alarm Zones can be opened manually when the associated map is open by going to the taskbar and clicking on Load\Load Alarm Zone or Track from File. They can be loaded automatically when the map

is loaded by going to the taskbar and clicking on File\Configuration\Auto Load Files, select the file by

clicking on the folder icon on the right of the window, make sure you are in C:\OziTracker_Digital\AvlData

folder, select the file, click Open, then click Save.

• If Proximity or Alarm Zones do not show after they are automatically loaded, go to the taskbar and click the Show Icon . The Show/Hide Alarm and Proximity Zones feature helps to further reduce screen

clutter.

Alarm & Proximity Zones continued

Example of Alarm Zone around Granville Island, Vancouver B.C.. Vehicle leaving the Home base on

October 11, 2006 at 8.42 AM, arriving at Granville Island at 8:48 AM, leaving at 10:10 and arriving back

Home at 10:20 AM. The record of the vehicle entering and leaving the Alarm Zone is first recorded in the

Unacknowledged Event Log. Then either Deleted or Ackn/Saved to the Message Log.

Alarm Zones are a very powerful feature, some of the applications depending on the scale and type ofmap could be:

Logging IndustryIn the logging industry it could be used to show what equipment or vehicles are in a Cut Block and when theequipment or vehicle leaves a Cut Block. If the equipment is working outside the Cut Block and in an areawhere it should not be, it could show when a logging truck arrived at the Cut Block. When it left theCut Block with the load and when it arrived at the Dry Land Sort and when it left the Dry Land Sort. It couldalso be used to record when the truck left the yard in the morning and when it returned to the yard atnight. The speed the truck is travelling on certain sections of the highway can be shown by moving themouse cursor over the points the gps receiver is laying on the map, as the truck moves. The featurecould also be used to show when equipment enters the shop for service and when it leaves the shop to goback in service.

Airline IndustryOziTracker can use different types of mapping data to show air planes and helicopters moving in OziTracker. They could be air charts, hill side shaded maps, topographical maps, satellite images, georeferencedortho photos to name a few.The alarm zone can outline the base and alarm zones, or proximity zones can be used for the scheduleddestinations. You will know if the aircraft leaves the base on schedule and when it arrives at it'sdestination and if it was on schedule. If the aircraft is between hits, the plane can be polled by thedispatcher to show it's exact position. Alarm zones can also be placed around hazardous flying areasto notify the dispatcher that aircraft has entered the area. A Proximity Sound File is played when avehicle or aircraft enters a Proximity(waypoints) or Alarm(polygons) zone. When creating Proximity or Alarm zones for aircraft, because of the speed, oversize the zone.

Rail Transportation IndustryThe same type of scenarios can be applied to the rail industry. A good example would be thetransporting of coal via rail. An Alarm Zone could be placed around the loading facilites at themine. This would show when the train arrived at the facilities, and when it left the facilities. The hazardareas along the way to the unloading facilities could have alarm zones, they could includebridges, trestles, crossings, avalanche areas, etc., an alarm zone around the unloading whichwould show when the train arrived and when it left.

Search and Rescue• Search area would be outlined on the map with an Alarm Zone.• This would show when the search personnel or vehicles and aircraft are in the area and how the

search teams are covering the area. • The radios used by the search personnel could be tied into the Mancheck feature of OziTracker that

would require them to report in at fixed intervals to the search coordinator.

Name Search

The Name Search feature in OziTracker is basically a simplified database for finding waypoints on a map. In the sample below we have loaded over 20,000 oil and gas wellhead points from Northern B.C.

1. We have put a check in the On Map box so the program will only look for wellheads on this map.2. We have entered the LSD number for the wellhead we want to find.3. We clicked on crosshair icon to plot the location of the wellhead on the map.4. We created a waypoint at the location by clicking the waypoint icon. 5. We right clicked on the waypoint and selected Properties and in the Proximity Distance window we entered 1000 feet and clicked on Save. We now have a 1000 foot Proximity Zone around the wellhead. Any vehicle entering the zone will be logged to the proximity log, showing when it entered and when it left.

Minimum Hardware Requirements

• Microsoft Windows XP or Vista operating system. OziTracker has not been tested on Windows 7.• 2.0 GHZ Core 2 Duo Intel or AMD processor. No Celeron Processors.• ATI or NVDIA 256-Bit, PCI Express, Dual Monitor Video Card. No video cards that are built into the

motherboard.• 2 Gigs of Motherboard RAM, the more the better.• 160 Gig Sata hard drive. The motherboard shall have connections for Sata hard drives.• Network Adapter, either built into the motherboard or as a separate PCI card.

Required if tracking on Internet Maps.. • Dual LCD monitors are recommended for OziTracker because of the many windows that can opened.

One monitor for tracking, the other monitor for text messaging, event log, message log, proximity log or the I/O.

• An excellent program to backup your computer is available at www.acronis.com. When OziTracker is installed onto a computer, a hardware key is generated, this will tie the program to that computer. If your

hard drive crashes and you lose all your files and you have to reinstall OziTracker, another hardware key will be generated which will require unlocking code. The program will be crippled until the unlocking code

is entered. For information about the unlocking code, see page 3 in this manual.

Note: Spectrum Digital Imaging Ltd. will not give technical support on any of the above hardware or software recommendations.
