CONTENT Introduction What is ozone deletion ? Causes of ozone depletion Role of carbon inn ozone depletion How can we reduce carbon emission ? What can you do as a student ?

INTRODUCTION Ozone is a natural gas that is found in 2

different layers of atmosphere i.e. troposphere and stratosphere.

Ozone comprises of 3 molecules of oxygen bonded with each other.

These ozone molecules form a layer in the stratosphere that absorbs all the harmful ultraviolet radiations coming from the sun.

Page 4: Ozone depletion by carbon emission

WHAT IS OZONE DEPLETION ??? Ozone depletion is the thinning of the ozone

layer in the stratosphere due to over production of ozone depleting substances (O.D.S).

It is sometimes termed as Ozone hole.

CAUSES OF OZONE DEPLETION Main ozone depleting substance in chloro

floro carbons (CFCs). Emission of greenhouse gases Use of pesticides. eg :- Methyl bromide Vehicular emissions. Industrial pollutants. Fire extinguishers. Use of ozone depleting substances like

aerosols, sprays etc.

ROLE OF CARBON IN OZONE DEPLETION Carbon is the most abundant element on this

earth and is highly reactive. Carbon combines with many gaseous and

forms harmful chemicals like hydrocarbons, carbon tetrachloride.

It is studied that 80% of the ozone is depleted by carbon emission so it is very much important to reduce the carbon emission.

Page 7: Ozone depletion by carbon emission

HOW TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSION ??? Limit private vehicle driving. Use eco friendly house cleaning products. Avoid using pesticides Banning the use of ozone depleting

substances Use of energy efficient products. Proper maintenance of coolants in

refrigerators and air conditioners.

Page 8: Ozone depletion by carbon emission

WHAT CAN YOU DO AS A STUDENT ??? Unplug your gadgets when not in use. Switch off the car engines on signals. Healthy driving should be practiced. Waste usage. Use public transport for travelling. Use of eco friendly products. Use of renewable energy resources. Engage yourself in tree planting and

awareness activities. 3R policy (reduce, reuse, recycle) should be

implemented.

Earth without ozone is like a house without roof.

Thank you.
