YOUR 100% SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED!Here’s our pledge to you - which has never changed:

If you aren’t completely, 100% satisfied with any purchase you receive from Brownells, for any reason, at any time, return it for a full refund or exchange.

No hassle, no problem. We don’t bog you down in endless paperwork. Your complete satisfaction with each and every product we sell is what’s most important to us.

Dear Folks,

One of the worst feelings in the world is helpless-ness, especially in the aftermath of a natural disaster or other emergency. The key is to be prepared before something happens. When I was in the Navy, our train-ing prepared us to handle unexpected situations. As a parent of three boys, I always made provisions to protect my family in emergencies. I’m sure you, too, don’t want to entrust your loved ones’ safety to others. But finding the time to figure out what you need – and where to get it – can be a problem.

That’s why we decided to produce this catalog, our first devoted exclusively to products to help you through emergencies. In here, you’ll find gear to help you deal with temporary disruptions of services caused by a flood, tornado, earthquake, blizzard, even civil unrest – whatever event is likely to hit your area. Plus, we’ve included articles by experts in the field of emergency survival to help you decide exactly what you’ll need. As we have for the past 75 years, we want to help you safeguard yourself and those close to you - so you won’t be helpless in a crisis.

Very Best,

Prepare. Plan. Stay Informed. Visit www.ready.gov. for even more helpful information about how to keep you safe in any emergency. You can even sign up to take part in the National Day of Preparedness on September 30th.

Finding yourself in a “survival situation” is never planned. Regard-less of the reason why you are in this situation or the exact type of environment you might be in, there is a set of core principles that will help you get out alive - the 7 Survival Priorities. They are . . .

POSITIVE ATTITUDEMaintaining a positive attitude and the will to survive is the number one pri-ority. All of the others may vary depending on your situation. Identifying the positive characteristics of any situation, along with understanding – and being prepared for - the different types of stressors you will experience is essential for your survival.

FIRST AIDIt is important that you treat all injuries immediately, so you will be able accomplish your other survival tasks. Carry an individual first aid kit (IFAK) with you whenever you go out to the backcountry. A small cut has the po-tential to become something more serious if it is not treated and becomes infected.

SHELTERShelter comes in many forms, and its purpose is to protect you from the elements. Your first line of shelter is your clothing. Dressing appropriately for the outdoors is important but often overlooked. Look for natural shelters such as caves, fallen trees, or overhangs. Tents, tarps, emergency blan-kets, bivvies, and even a trash bag can be used in a pinch.

SIGNALING CAPABILITYHave your signaling device easily accessible in case rescue is imminent. Audio and visual signals are two methods you can use to signal for rescue. At a minimum always carry a whistle and a mirror. A glow stick is an excel-lent addition for nighttime signaling.

WATER According to the survival “Rule of Threes,” a person has approximately three days to survive without water. Water takes the path of least resis-tance and runs downhill. You have a better chance of finding water if you travel downhill. Purify by boiling for at least 5 minutes or by using commer-cially available purification methods.

FIREFire is the most versatile survival priority. Just a few of its uses in a sur-vival situation include providing heat, light, cooking, and signaling. Always carry different ignition sources with you when you go to the backcountry. A lighter, matches, and a spark-rod are three excellent choices.

FOOD Food is actually the last of the Survival Priorities because a person can go approximately three weeks without food. If you run out of food, there are plenty of edible resources in the wild. Almost anything with fur, feathers, or scales is edible. There are edible plants, nuts, and of course bugs. Ensure you cook anything from the wild thoroughly to kill harmful parasites.

Remember to S.T.O.P. when you are in a survival situation:

Stop, Think, Observe, Plan. Small mistakes can kill you. The key to survival is keeping yourself from panicking. Slow down and take the time to do things

A person can go approximately three days without water. Without an adequate supply of safe drinking water, other emergency preparations will be pointless. The three key is-sues involving water in an extended emergency are finding it, purifying it, and storing it.

FINDING WATERWhen out in the wilderness, traveling downhill increases your chances of finding a natural water source. It is a myth that run-ning water is cleaner than still water.

Water contains microorganisms that can be dangerous for you to ingest, commonly bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. Their size is measured in microns (one micron = 0.000039” or .001mm), so when choosing a purification device, pay attention to the micron level it is designed to filter.

PURIFICATIONBoiling is the most effective method of disinfecting water, but it takes time and requires additional resources, such as fire and a fireproof container. There are chemical treatment options such as chlorine, chlorine dioxide tablets, iodine tablets, and sodium dichloroisocyanurate tablets.

Filter/purification devices, such as the LifeStraw, are used world-wide in underdeveloped countries. The Lifestraw instantly re-moves waterborne bacteria and protozoa, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium (causes of diarrhea and various gastrointestinal ailments). Steripen Purifiers use UV technology to remove 99.9% of harmful, viruses, bacteria, and protozoa in less than a minute.

The Sawyer All-in-One filter gives you the flexibility to use it in the backcountry or right on your kitchen faucet during an emer-gency. The LifeStraw Family system also attaches right to your sink faucet to provide safe drinking water in your home during an emergency situation.

You can use a combination of chemical treatment and filtering to ensure your water is thoroughly disinfected. Be prepared, how-ever: even after water has been disinfected, it will still often have an unpleasant odor or taste.

STORAGE Now that you have procured and purified your water, you need to store it. While in the wilderness, the best place to store your water is in your stomach. Ration your sweat – not your water.

For home emergency use, store at least one gallon of drinking water, per person, per day. Water storage in your home should be placed on pallets and kept off of concrete floors. Waterbrick stackable water and food containers are perfect for your home emergency plan. They can hold up to 3.5 gallons and stack neatly on top of one another.

A good rule of thumb is to store 1 gallon of drinkable water for each person per day.

1 gal/person/day Don't forget about livestock or pets!

TOD AY S EMERGENCY F OO D S TASTE GOOD AND ARE G OOD FOR YOU

Conventional wisdom has always placed food fairly low on the list of survival pri-orities. Starvation is less of a concern than making dangerous mistakes because your thinking is muddled due to low blood sugar. Any number of disasters can - and accord-ing to FEMA, will, at least once in our lives - knock out the civilized luxuries we’ve come to depend on.

The Office of Homeland Security recom-mends having a cache of food sufficient to sustain every member of your household for three days. Recent history has proved that isn’t really long enough.

Today’s selection of emergency foods is better than anything that came before. Choices are more varied, recipes are tasti-er, shelf life (25 years is standard) is longer, and none have proved unpalatable.

"M EALS R EADY TO EAT" (M REs)For complete meals with maximum con-venience, Voodoo Tactical MREs are ide-al. Complete, with real meat, vegetable, crackers and jelly, cookies, coffee, and a wet-wipe, you might forget that you’re sur-viving.

FR EEZE DRIED FOODFor grab-and-go situations, nothing beats the freeze-dried offerings of Mountain House and Wise Foods. Just add water to reconstitute a wide variety of dishes that are sometimes hard to differentiate from fresh-cooked.

Freeze-dried foods are packed into feath-erweight Mylar/foil, vacuum-sealed, tear-open pouches of 2 or 4 servings each. As Wise Food’s Blaine Furner noted, small individual pouches help safeguard against waste and spoilage.

Shelf life of freeze-dried fare is almost a moot point. To quote Mountain House’s R&D manager, Norm Jager, “We’re not just guessing that our products will last over 30 years, we know it.”

from either company are less expensive than fast foods (and more nutritious). Consider Mountain House’s 29-serving Just-In-Case Classic Assortment Bucket or Wise Food’s 60-serving Grab-And-Go Bucket.

STOVE S & MES S K IT SDehydrated foods are pre-cooked, but reconstitute most quickly when hot water is added. Raw water should always be boiled to kill parasites. A cook fire is often infeasible, so a stove is re-

quired, like the super-efficient, clean-burning Flash™ Cooking System from Jetboil.

Flash™ stoves heat quickly and reliably in any weather with Jet-power canisters of propane/isobutane gas. Propane provides higher vapor pressure for better performance in cold weather, while isobutane delivers more constant pressure as fuel levels drop. The Flash™ can boil two cups of water in two minutes.

Survival foods are designed to be eaten from their own pack-ages, but other foods might demand a mess kit. The best we’ve seen is the Pinnacle Dualist from GSI Outdoors. Designed for ultralight backpackers, this compact, full-feature (bowls, cook-pot, utensils), two-person cookset is ideal for every home or car emergency survival kit.

rShelter In A StormBy Len McDougall

Without shelter, prolonged exposure to even fairly warm temperatures is potentially lethal. So if your house has been made uninhabitable, you’ll need emergency shelter.

BA S ICSEvery survival outfit begins with a body-size polyethylene/mylar “bivvy” (short for “bivouac”) sack, with a reflective lining and orange exterior. Efficient alone, and ideal as a sleeping bag cov-er, the Adventure Medical 2-Person Emergency Bivvy is a must-have.

Every kit needs an ultralight tarpaulin, for per-sonal protection and for shielding equipment and pets. UST’s tough-as-nails 15 oz. B.A.S.E. model is instant shelter, a groundsheet, and a rain col-lector, with a reflective coating on one side and easily-spotted orange on the other.

T EN TSFor protecting family or gear, consider a multi-person tent. A good tent doesn’t leak, and the best models guarantee it. Look for taped seams, zippers that don’t snag, good ventilation, and a waterproof polyurethane coating.

For ease of set-up, choose a hub-type tent that integrates poles into one central point. Just fold them out, insert into grommets, and your tent is pitched. Coleman’s Instant Dome 3 weighs only 10 lbs., sets up in about one minute, and has a Weathertec™ floor that is guaranteed to be leak-proof when the clouds open up.

For toughness, the Bunker™ tent from Snugpak is engineered for “long-term hard use.” It’s free-standing, three-pole, sleeved design lets the polyurethane-coated rainfly become a weather-tight shelter in a min-ute. The three-person inner tent has a “bathtub” floor that keeps water out and fastens to the rainfly from the inside. Trail weight (including stakes and repair kit) is 7 ¾ lbs.

SL EEPI NG BAG SWhen SERE instructors want to break down a Green Beret or SEAL, they deprive the soldier of sleep. A human can withstand starvation, pain, and other hardships, but when deprived of sleep, the strongest person becomes as hard as Jell-O.

A sleeping bag should be selected for its abil-ity to perform when wet or torn. A synthetic-fill, quilted bag is best. Polyester fiberfill doesn’t ab-sorb water like traditional batting, crosshatched fibers won’t leak from a tear, and quilting means that if insulation is pulled out through a rip, the other compartments remain intact.

A sleeping bag is also necessary for treating shock and hypothermia. One of the best, at any price, is Coleman’s North Rim bag. With a heavy ripstop-polyester shell, soft polyester lining, pat-ented no-snag zipper, over-stuffed foot box, and full-length draft tube, and retailing for less than $60, this is one of the best buys on the market today.

A GOOD TENT IS INVALUABLE FOR PROTECTING Y OURSELF, Y OUR FAMILY, OR GEAR

Any emergency situation can cause a power outage that lasts days or even weeks. You will need alternative light-ing and a power source to keep your electronic devices running whether you are at home or in the wilderness. You may also need heat to keep warm and cook food. Alter-native power and lighting sources such as a generator, wind-up radio/light, batteries, solar panels, and fire ignit-ers are necessary items for your home emergency kit.

LIGHTA headlamp and a good flashlight should be always be stowed away in your gear. Don’t forget back up bulbs and batteries to maintain your light source.

Wind-up and solar powered lights are necessary items to have easily accessible when the power goes out or to keep in your kit when you don’t want to haul a lot of batter-

ies. The Solio Clip-Mini is a compact, solar-rechargeable LED light that can last for up to 33 hours. It can be clipped to the outside of your gear for quick accessibility.

BATTERIES AND CHARG E RSAn emergency kit requires an ample supply of batteries. Use a reputable name like Duracell, as they are the leader in the industry.

Maintaining communication with family and friends is essential, and many smartphones do not allow you to re-move or replace the battery. Once the power is out, you can’t recharge your phone unless you have an alternate power source. The Goal Zero Guide 10 Plus recharging kit is a small system that gives you the ability to recharge a cell phone, electronics, and AA and AAA rechargeable batteries.

Another effective off-the-grid charging device is called the Powertrekk Fuel Cell Charger and Puck Refill. It uses water to produce the electricity in its self-contained puck that will provide a charge to electronic devices via its USB port.

FIREFire is the most versatile survival priority when you are out in the wilderness. It still plays a part in the home, too. Fire has many uses: lighting, heat, cooking, and signaling, just to mention a few. You should carry multiple and vari-ous ignition sources on your body and in your kit. A lighter, matches, and a good spark rod are preferred devices. The UST Strike Force Fire Starter is capable of 4,000 strikes throwing hot sparks at a dry tinder bundle or a Wet Fire cube that is stored in the handle. A must have for the backcountry and your kit.

Survival ReadinessStay Alert To Stay Alive

Whether an emergency requires us to shelter in place or make a run for it, alertness and the proper gear can help us survive. To increase your chances of surviving an emergency, remain aware of your surroundings, and have some key items to help you meet various survival needs.

E MERGE NCY INFO RMAT IO NIn an emergency, a weather radio provides vital information. The Mid-land Emergency Radio is not just a radio; it also includes a flashlight, built-in whistle, and even a USB power port to charge personal elec-tronics. It can be powered by its hand crank, a vehicle’s 12-volt outlet, or rechargeable batteries. Set it in the middle of your room or camp so everyone can listen.

STAYIN G SH A RP - LITERAL LYBuilding a shelter, preparing food, and repairing equipment are tasks the Brownells AR-15 Multi Tool w/Knife can handle, as well as help you maintain your defensive AR-15 type rifle.

A good knife is worth its weight in gold in a survival situation. Don’t settle for a substandard quality. Edge retention and a comfortable, ergonomic grip are features to consider for all small folders, straight knives, and machetes. A safe, secure sheath is also a must. Gerber Knives are among the best; I have carried four different models of them both in combat zones and on long treks.

STAY POW ER ED UPIn an emergency, you might have to navigate a building, change a tire, or carry somebody – in the dark. A great way to keep your hands free and be able see is a wearable flashlight – like the Fenix Headlamp. Durable and adjustable, the Fenix gives up to 500 lumens of output and runs on common AA batteries. If walking with a group at night, position yourself so everyone can benefit from the headlamp’s beam.

FOR EW AR NED I S FOR EARMEDDesperate situations tend to bring out the criminal element, and there can be other threats, such as an animal that wanders into camp. Deter-rence and avoidance are best, but for situations you really can’t avoid, you need some sort of defense.

Circumstances might prevent you from carrying a firearm. Along with my knife and a light, I carry a defensive spray everywhere that I legally can. Aerosols like Fox Labs Pepper Spray require minimal training and can give you decisive a defensive option. With pepper spray, realize that the wind can blow it back on you, so know how to aim it for great-est effect.

n good to go

A prepared person understands the need to plan for all contingencies, including medical situations. Wounds or other physical emergencies must be dealt with immedi-ately on the spot. The old saying, “An ounce of preven-tion is worth a pound of cure” applies many times over to these situations. With limited medical aid available, or even none at all, preventing disease through proper sani-tation and treating injuries quickly is critical.

KEEPING CLEAN ON THE GODuring an evacuation or a prolonged disruption of the municipal water supply and sanitation, be sure to keep essential hygiene items close by at all times. A big help in staying healthy are the Adventure Medical First Aid Kits, United Spirit of America 72-Hour Hygiene Kit and the Stansport Portable Toilet. Hygienic wipes are preferable to traditional toilet paper, as irritation and even infection can easily set in during high-stress events, espe-cially when on the move. They also won’t be destroyed if they get wet like toilet paper will.

DENTAL EMERGENCIESDental problems can be one of the most painful medical situa-tions. If you are far from a treatment facility, a few basic items will temporarily alleviate the pain of dental fractures, lost fill-ings, or infections. These can all be found in the compact and inexpensive Dental Medic Kit from Adventure Medical Kits.

SEVERE TRAUMAEither the Weekender Kit or expanded Whitetail Kit – both from Adventure Medical Kits – are great kits for the field. But for treating severe bleeding, you will need more extensive bandag-es and blood clotting agents. The Bighorn Kit has a removable insert with specialized severe bleeding and wound treatment items.

The Echo Sigma Trauma Kit is very similar to the kit I trained on in the Army and then later deployed with. Echo Sigma did their homework, as it’s what our warfighters carry and has been proven to save lives. Echo Sigma’s kit has extra room inside, so you can add a couple of heavy-duty trash bags for certain types of chest wounds, a permanent marker, and a keychain flashlight to complete such a kit. It’s designed to attach right to your back-pack or gear for quick access to its contents.

If you are more constrained by budget or space, at the bare minimum, acquire a kit that will treat severe bleeding. The Ad-venture Medical Trauma Pak is one such kit. It is pocket sized and very inexpensive.

Make sure your kit has a purpose-built one-handed tourniquet; add one if it doesn’t. Please note that you should get proper training before using a tourniquet. They are coming back into use by medical professionals for severe bleeding cases, and every U.S. soldier is now issued one for deployments.
